System:
-OSX Panther.
-Ran Software Update this afternoon (I do it daily)
-2 G5 Imacs and 2 G4 Tower Macs.

Problem:
Our company has the Adobe Font Folio from 4-5 years ago. All the
fonts have worked until the last few weeks. I can't give an exact
date because of the "rush" factor at the office We have 8 seats,
and font uniformity is obviously important. :)

Four of the machines are having problems loading all the fonts. I
attempt to "Add Fonts" in Font Book. Approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of
them are grayed out in that dialog box.

What I have tried:
-Deleted the font files and recopied them from the orginal Adobe CD.

-I have read all the "web wisdom" time allows, and have copied them
back and forth from Library/Fonts to User/Libary/Fonts, etc.

-Double checked the "Ownership and security" settings of the
individual font files. They are open to all users, etc.

I have exhausted things I can think of. I invite any suggestions.
TIA for help!

Take care,

Patrick,

Ah yes. Font Book. My least favorite Apple app...

The reason 1/2 to 2/3 of the fonts are grayed out when you try to load them
via the "Open Font" menu option, is that they are the Postscript (printer)
font that goes along with the bitmap/suitcase font. Font Book won't allow
you to select them, but (thankfully) does copy them over along with the
bitmap font (according to my own tests) when you load them.

First thing you may want to try is cleaning out your font caches. You can do
this using my utility, Yasu. (Not a shameless plug, I promise...) It may
clear up the misbehavior.

If that doesn't do the trick, it's time to remove all traces of your Adobe
font collection from each machine. You have to do this both on the hard
disk, AND in Font Book. This is a tricky topic, and it's hard to say exactly
what should be done without seeing your machines. The following are general
steps that I would take based on past experience. That said...

First start in Font Book. Remove all non-Apple typefaces from ALL
collections. You'll be able to tell which ones are Apple faces by the fact
that the "Font type" displayed below the preview window of Font Book will
show "Datafork TrueType" versus "Postscript" or just "TrueType." Keep in
mind that removing typefaces in Font Book will delete them from your hard
drive at the same time. If you delete something you didn't mean to, it's
gone.

Once you've done that, if you've installed your fonts "for all users" of the
computer, you may have to do some further weeding of stragglers in
"/Library/Fonts." You can usually tell the Apple fonts from the rest by
virtue that they will have a ".dfont" or ".ttf" extension on their name.

If you've simply installed your fonts "for this user" in Font Book, then
you're in good shape. You can just remove all remaining fonts from
"/Users/<username>/Library/Fonts."

Then, try clearing the font cache one more time using Yasu and then load
your type faces from the Adobe CD using Font Book. I'd suggest loading them
on a user basis ("for this user only") for each user instead of "for all
users" at once.

That should get you moving in the right direction. I would recommend (from
personal experience) that you might try Extensis Suitcase X11 for font
management, especially if you're in a production environment. I tried
working with Font Book myself and nearly went mad. Suitcase has been a joy
in comparison.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Regards,

Jim Mitchell

Thanks Jim!
I have run through these steps, and without avail. Your explanation of the
matter jives
with what I have experienced.

I am going to DL a trial run of Suitcase to see what it will do for us.

Thanks again,

Tiger will be well worth the wait if you have systems that can support it;
however, it will
not be a free upgrade. Amazon.com lists it for 130.00 and you can preorder
there. Just
search "apple and 10.4" for details.

Tiger definitely will not be a free upgrade. It should be out within three
months, I've heard through the grapevine. Many stores are planning really
neat store events for the big day, which hasn't been officially set, the
sooner the better. Wait, it will be worth it!

My neighbor has an iMac G4...
"naturally, something happened" and of course the files were never backed-up.
upon boot she cannot login as administrator nor user.
I tried the install CD... reset password is available in the menu but
immediately takes you to the system installer window. Tried to install but after
5
mins, nothing happens.
I shut down with power button... cannot force quit.
I restart and use disk first aid and discover "overlapped extent allocation
files".
Disk first aid cannot fix... I run Techtools pro, it discovers many errors
and fixes many but not all of the errors. Try the system CD again, same as
above: can't reset password and can't do a clean install.
does anyone have an idea to at least be able to copy the files
before initialization and all files lost.

No it will not. I don't think any announcements have been made but I
probally will be the usual upgrade price of around $130.

Subject: Question On Ideas to Capture Data From Print Job in OS9 Application

I'm looking for a utility that would do the following:

Send the data from a print job of an application in OS 9 to disk
rather than the printer.

I seem to recall that there was something like this available.

The reason that I'm looking for something like this is that we are
planning on converting from a single user OS 9 application called CAT
IV to Sugar CRM.

I can export name, address, phone number info. from CAT with a
standard command from the program. The problem is that all of the
individual contact history notes for each contact are not exported.
This type of program is different than a basic contact program like
the address book app., or other basic contact managers where that
would be all the info. there would be.

In other words for one of our suppliers I can export from CAT all of
the info. about the account and each associated contact. What I
cannot export are the 285 "events" or activities that happened with
these contacts at this one supplier. This would be phone calls,
notes, follow ups. Most of it is plain text. One of our salespeople
has over 1200 accounts in this program so it would be rather ungainly
to do this manually.

Sugar CRM has the capability of importing not only the name, address
info. but also to import the individual activities associated with a
contact.

If I can find a utility that would redirect the output of a report to
a file on my hard drive rather than the printer I may have something
to work with.

Another option would be Applescript, of which I am not to familiar
with. (The application the data is in is an OS 9 application).

If you have any suggestions on either approaches (some sort of print
utility or Applescript) I'd love to hear your suggestions. If you're
savy with this or know someone who is we'd also be open to fee based
help.

Photoshop question:

When opening a RGB picture from my digital camera or scanner on both of
my Macs with Photoshop CS installed the view menu proof setup shows
"working CMYK". Is this the default and can the default be changed? If
it is a RGB image I am opening why is the proof setup CMYK? When I
change the proof setup to Mac RGB generally the picture looks very
flat.
Adobe's site just says you need to have the correct profile for
monitor, capture device and output device which doesn't make it clear
which profile to use if I just want to send some good looking pictures
to friends via email attachment.

Hi Rich,

Rather than getting into an online tutorial, here is some great info that might
help to
demystify this. You can set the default profiles and change them as you wish;
however,
there is a bit more to it than that.

Hello everyone,
I am planning on getting DSL for my home. One consideration I have is
the ability to share my DSL connection between my G5 and my Wintel
laptop which I have for work. I'd like to use the laptop wirelessly.
Looking at the Verizon and the Westell (wireless router) sites I get
mixed messages - Verizon says you can do a home network but you have to
sign up for it and it only works with OS 9. They also indicate the
router does not work with OS X. However, when I look at the Westell
site they indicate the router does work with OS X. Has anyone had
experience with setting up a mixed environment and can give me some
advice regarding what I need to request (or not request) from Verizon
or set up on my own? Two reasons for going with the broadband
connection is to eliminate one of my phone lines and actually save
money in the long run and more importantly, improve performance for my
work computer - I get some very large files sent to me and dial-up
chokes. Since I frequently telecommute this is more than an
inconvenience.

Since I know that quite a few folks out there have DSL, I am hoping
someone has had experience in this matter.

Cheers,
Tom Chipley

I have DSL from SBC/Yahoo and have used various routers, none of which are
*authorized*
by the DSL provider, but all of which work with both (all) my Macs as well as
with my wife's
Dell Insperon running Windows XP. Three months ago I got Airport Extra and
connect
both the Dell and the G4 Laptop wirelessly (through the router to the AirPort)
while still
having two Macs hardwired to the router.
It seems to me that all the DSL providers wish you to think that only if you use
their
equipment will your system work. My experience would suggest that once you get
DSL
into the house and through the provider's modem what happens to the signal is up
to you.
They may not *support* the results, but it still works.
Good luck,

Tom,

While I do not have a mixed network, I have Verizon DSL at home. It goes
through a Linksys router. The router and DSL modem was originally set up on
OS 9 but runs fine on my G5 and my daughter's apple laptops. We may made
setting adjustments under OS X and verizon has helped! (They are in fact
quite helpful and willing to work with us even though the problem is usually
the Linksys router.) Once the modem and router are set up it is my
understanding that the computer is really irrelevant. Also once the wireless
network is up it should not make a difference whether the connecting
computer is Mac or Wintel.

I also set up a network for my daughter at school on Verizon in which the
original computer was a Wintel and then she connected wirlessly with her
Powerbook to the Linksys router. The base computer for that network is now
another Powerbook running OS X again without problems. Last example is a
cable modem and Linksys router for my other daughter. It is set up with her
OS X Powerbook but her roommate also connects wirlessly with her Wintel
machine.

Bottom line I don't think you will have a problem. Now I am in Pennsylvania
and the DSL site for Verizon for Pennsylvania says OS X is supported. (Go to
http://www22.verizon.com/Search/sresults/ and check what it says for your
location.) Signing up for a home network is probably irrelevant as once you
get the signal into a wireless router the rest is automatic.

Eliot

I have Verizon DSL at home and at work.

At home I use the Westell DSL modem that I got years ago when DSL
first came out and a MacSense DSL router, along with an Airport Base
station. All works fine, although at home it's all Macs - 5 Mac
laptops and 1 desktop.

At work we have a Westell Modem, a Linksys DLS Router, a Linksys
switch and an Airport Base Station. This all serves up 5 desktop
Macs, 2 Mac laptops, 2 PC's, a couple of PC laptops and 3 network
printers.

My preference is to not use the Verizon software that comes with the
unit but to use what comes with the router. Back when we first set it
up years ago there was problems with Verizon's MacPoet software. Most
of the DSL routers use PPoE.

I think you'll find that all will work fine. Most of the DSL routers
have a set up page where you input your account name and password and
how you're connecting; PPoE or Static IP. You're probably set up for
PPoE unless you paid for a static IP (extra). The other clients
connect by DHCP server, which is how you set up the individual Mac's
or PC's. On the Mac you go to:
System preferences, then click on network, then click on the drop
down box "show" and pull down to built in Ethernet. There you would
choose the left box "TCPIP" and pull down on the Configure IPv4 to
"Using DHCP".

I'm not as familiar with Windows, but I think you go to Network and
follow the wizard to add a new network. Connect via network
connection. You may have to reboot the PC for it to be active.

I have for some time been using Eudora Pro from QualComm (6.2.1) for all my
e-mail.
Does anyone know any other e-mail program that has Automatic filtering and
sorting into
mailboxes, an interactive Addressbook, multiple font and format options and
allows
multiple users with different e-mail addresses.
I'm not looking to change, but I am attempting to get .Mac to consider these
features for
its e-mail setup and I want to know where else they are all available.

Doesn't Netscape 7 do these things? I use that, and it is not perfect, but I
have liked it much, much better than Internet Explorer -

Given the low cost of a replacement, I'd just replace the CD drive.

My computer (17 in PwrBk G4) crashes one way or the other constantly.
(Once a week I run Disk Utility, Disk warrior, etc.) It defaults to
April 1976. I was told that Unix based computers will do that. Anyone
else?

Dear Marie,

I don't have this problem. However, do you let your battery drain at least
once a month, don't always use your plug in. Also if you have had your
computer awhile the pram battery may need changed. A third thought. Do you
have at least 10 per cent of your hard drive free. Ram needs 10 per cent of
the hard drive capacity to properly function. Are all of your system
updates installed?

Your situation sounds strange. You shouldn't have to run disk warrior so
often.

Good Luck,

Sarah

Thank you so much, Sarah. I have 1 gig of ram and 43% available HD.
Don't drain the battery and never even thought of the PRAM battery. I
really appreciate the advise.

I do believe that you need to match them up because I belive that it
follows the same principle of the older MACs

I assume you're adding a memory chip to a G3 mini tower or desktop.
If so, go ahead and add the 256MB chip. Memory chips in a G3 tower
or desktop, do not have to be the same MEG size. (On a lab full of G3
towers we had all kinds of memory amounts in a variety of configurations).
Heck...memory is cheap, why not add a 512, for a total of 640MB of RAM.

Apple has released the latest update to OS X - 10.3.9 via the SUCP.

*We recommend backing up your data; repairing permissions (YASU preferred);
installing
10.3.9 from the COMBO UPDATER; and, them repair permissions again after reboot.
This
method has shown more reliable results. You may wish to wait 24 hrs. to monitor
the
"tech" sites (xlr8yourmac.com, macfixit.com) for any potential issues with this
update;
however, none are apparent at this point.

Important Note:
Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the
Oxford 922
bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.0.2 that can result in the loss of data
stored on
the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple
recommends
you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive
manufacturer for
more information.

On a personal note:
Hi all --

After very successfully updating to 10.3.9, and in my usual way, I went through
my system
prefs and updated a few settings for good measure. This updates prefs, etc., on
a few
choice items like font smoothing which can be improved as the quartz engine and
graphics support update with each revision.

After checking my display profiles, I recalibrated from scratch and found a
marked
difference AND improvement this time after the update. Colors are more accurate,
evenly
saturated and the fonts appear much cleaner on my display. I was wondering if
anyone
else had tried this yet.

As always, I recommend running YASU before the update; then, using the STAND
ALONE
COMBO updater; then, repair permissions again after restart.

Nice difference in the look and stability. None of the Safari issues or other
things I've hear
about online at all.

Please let me know if you find the same results. This is not at all uncommon,
but this is a
noticable improvement on two Powerbooks and an iBook as well as a 21" LCD
display.

What is the purpose of repairing permissions? I have Yasu and have used it a
couple of
times, but I'm not quite sure why.
