I'd suggest the following:

Try the QT updater and be sure that you have the new QT 4.1. Actually, before
that, I really recommend upgrading Netscape to 4.0.8 stand alone (if you use
AOL to get online or use another email client) or Communicator 4.7 if you have
an ISP and use Netscape mail. For OS9, this is an issue. I'd suggest the 128bit
strong encryption as well.

THEN run the QT updater or reinstall from the installer.

For good measure, you can save your registration info (if you reg'd for QTPro
which is worth it) and dump your QT prefs.

Best wishes,

TSMT

Hiya all. Anyone feel like giving me some hints getting Quicktime to work?
I just downloaded it and installed it on my Powerbook G3 (OS9). Whenever I
go to a site with a quicktime movie, I just get the "broken" icon--saying I
don't have the appropriate plug-in. I'm using Netscape 4.05, and the QT
plug in, *is* in the Netscape plug-ins folder. Is there somewhere else I
should copy it to, or what's going on? Other people mention this same
problem on the Apple Tech Exchange forum, but there's no posts on how to fix
it. I tried trashing it all and reinstalling...to no avail.

Any help is much appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the tips on getting the Performa 635CD back up and running.

I thought I'd report back at what I found, since others may run into
something similar and benefit from it.

I found that the system CD I was trying to boot from initially was system
7.5.3, which I thought would be the one to upgrade to since the 635 was
running 7.5. Problem was that the CD I was using was the 7.5.3 that came
with a PowerPC model 7600 and was for PowerPC Macs only, which is why it
wouldn't let me install the software on the 635, which is
non-PowerPC-duuugh.

I tried many of the tricks suggested by some on how to boot from the CD and
bypass the internal hard drive-all to no avail on this MAC, tried:

* Set start up drive in the control panels and re-boot, no good.
* Tried the key combinations that Dan suggested to force it to boot off the
internal CD (command, option, shift, delete (?), didn't work. As well as
command, option, shift, delete and the number of the SCSI chain you want to
boot from.
(I was used to PowerPC Macs where you just hold the "C" key down and the
Mac isforced to boot off the CD-that works with PowerPC's but not with
other Macs.)

First off, I found great value in finally referring back to David Pogue's
excellent book, Macworld Mac SECRETS, 5th Edition.
http://www.pogueman.com/DPbooks.html#mms

What was very beneficial about this book is that it outlines the various
Apple systems that Apple had and what improvements there were, from day
one. This allowed me to see which system I should be instaling on this
particular Mac ideally. There are all kinds of tricks and things we've all
read about at some time, but forgot. One section that was very informative
is the different key combinations to press to do different things on start
up-such as if you want to start up with virtual memory off, etc.

The other thing that was helpful was that I'm a packrat and had several old
Apple system CD's stashed in the basement and an old version of Norton
Utilities.

Here's what I did:
1. Booted off the Norton Utilities Emergency disk.
2. Ran Norton Utilities to check for bad blocks, fixed a bunch of other
things on the Mac such as bad bundled bits (are yours ok?)
3. Made a bootoable system disk to boot off of with system 7.5 system CD
using Apples's Disk Copy (never had any luck getting this Mac to boot off
any of the system CD's.
4. Booted off the floppy.
5. Did a clean install of system 7.5 (Here David Pogue's book was a help in
reminding me that a clean install can be invoked with 7.5 by pressing
"command K," whereas it's a mouse click for that option with the newer
system CD.
6. Installed the system 7.5 update ontop of system 7.5.
7. Checked to make sure it would boot with the new system.
8. Went back and checked if there were any extra extensions, fonts, or
control panels in the old system that needed to be copied over to the new
system folder-there weren't.
8. Went into the control panels and extensions and applied an orange lable
to all of the original control panels and extensions so I could go back
later if there's ever anynew stuff that's added by installations of
programs (a suggestion in David Pogue's book).
9. Deleted the old system folder.
10. Checked the option of "protect system folder" which I've found to be
helpful in the past to keep kids from mistakedly dragging things out of the
system folder the Mac needs.

Upshot was that this morning the 4th grade class gave a round of applause
since their Mac is back and running.

Thanks again for the tips you all gave.

I could use some help on two Macs.

The one is a Perfoma 635CD in my daughters class at Grace Christian School.

It's running system 7.5
The problem is that it locks up at the desktop when it's started.
I've been able to get past that by turning all the extensions off, and a
little further by limiting the extensions that load.

My thought was to just re-install a new system on it, since there's not the
myriad of extra fonts or extras in the system folder.

I've been able to start the Mac up with the proper extensions to use the
CD. I've specified the "set start up drive" to the Mac OS 7.5.3 system CD.

Problem is that it will not start up from the CD, it still reverts back to
the system on the hard drive. I can open files on the CD no problem.

I got around that problem, but when I try to install a new system on the
Performa it tells me something to the effect that I can't install it on
this system.

I read something in one of the Mac troubleshooting books that you can't use
a regular Mac system CD on Performas and have to use the CD that ships with
them. Which of course I don't have.

I've spent several hours poking around Apples's web sites looking for the
OS that should be used on a Performa 635CD to no avail.

Any tips?

There's a class of about 25 8 and 9 year olds that are now "Mac-less" that
would greatly appreciate any tips.

Thanks

I tried Clarisworks, Simpletext and Netscape. Nothing worked. I then
changed the .doc format to an .html format. I opened it up in the
Internet Explorer. I saved it as a .txt format and I used Clarisworks to
read it. It was complicated, but it worked and the document remained
intact.

My personal recommendation from my own experience is to go for an Orange
Grappler Micro 906F card, which is amply fast enough for those peripherals,
and unlike the equivalent Adaptec card IS bootable. It is $50 from Orange
Micro direct. Their service is excellent. The equivalent speed Adaptec card
is more expensive and is NOT bootable.

If you want to add SCSI hard drives to the SCSI system, then I would
recommend a separate card for those, and as fast as you can afford.
Connecting slower peripherals to a faster SCSI bus will only slow down
   everything else on the bus.

   Hope this helps.

MacLink 11.0 is the key from DataViz. Great app. You might have a basic
converter if you have Claris/AppleWorks. Also, Microsoft Office 98 will
open many .doc types.

You need Mac link deluxe conversion program and a good word processor
program. It is also a problem if your word processor program is an older
version than that of the one you received.

What word processing/page layout software programs do you have?

Claris Works has a slew of translators, or Microsoft Word should be able to
open it. There is a filter available for word 5.1 owners to open Word 6
files in case you have the older version of word.

Some options:
Place the docuement in PageMaker, as it should be able to place it.
Open up Microsoft Word, go to the file menu to open, when the box comes up
click on "List Files of Type" try "readable files." You'll get a bunch of
jibberish in the headers etc, and won't be able to have the formatting but
should be able to read what's in it.

Lastly,

Ask the person who sent you the document to save the document in a format
that you can read. Plain text for example. They would go to "save as" and
select a version of Word if you have Word, or plain text if you have
nothing in common program wise. You should then be able to open it in any
word processor or even simple text.

Thanks to all who helped with my hard drive questions. Just to follow
up...

The IBM 18ES Ultrastar 50pin/7200/2M buffer/9.1gig works like a charm in
my PowerComputing PowerWave 150!!!! Although it is only at fastSCSI
(scsi-2) speed for throughput, it is drastically faster than my original
internal drive. I highly recommend this upgrade.

I have max'd out my PW150 w/ Newer 400/200/1M G3 card, ATi 128 Nexus,
Epson 1200 and a ton o' memory for still much less than the new box
would have been. I just can't part with this thing yet.

G4 is a-comin' soon. I feel the need!!! Still, this box has stood the
test of computer time well.

Again, new list, big thanks to all, and it WORKS!

Cheers,

Dan

Ensure that the owner is set to the appropriate person, and ensure that they
have full read/write access to the folder.

Next, ensure thet both the User/Group popup menu as well as Everyone is set
to Write Only.

This will create your Drop Box & allow anyone to place things in it.

If you only want certain people to be able to use the drop box, create a
group in the file sharing control panel, and change the access priveleges in
the Get info window so that the group is listed in the User/Group popup menu
with Write Only access, and then ensure that Everyone has no access to it.

I want to setup a write only drop box on my computer to share over a network.
When I set up the folder as a drop box, it is dimmed in the chooser of the other
computers. What am i doing wrong. I even had the Help Guide me through the
process to no avail. The computers are running 7.6.1 and up. Soon all computers
will be replaced by G4's if Apple will ever ship them but I don't want to
encounter the same problem.

The data throughput speed, the actual drive speed is controlled on the drive
itself. If you put a 10Mb/s drive on a 40Mb/s bus or vice versa, the max
data throughput will be 10Mb/s for ALL drives on the bus.
If you want to take advantage of the new drive's speed, then another, faster
SCSI card is called for.

If you already have a slower SCSI drive on your bus, your newer, faster one
will work on it fine, except at the speed of the slowest drive on the bus,
which is probably the original one in the machine.

I have been getting mixed responses on this. Any suggestions?

PowerComputing PowerWave 150
Installing a second hard drive
50 pin SCSI2 (fast SCSI)

Using an IBM Ulrastar 18ES 9.1g/7200/2Mbuffer for u/w with 50 SCSI
connection.

Do I need the u/w card for the extra and thereby needing to pull one of
my PCI cards since I have three spots OR will it work given that the
connection appears to be the same and I might sacrafice a little
throughput.

I'm open here.

Thanks,

Dan

This was just sent to me. Any ideas?

Thanks,

---
Can anyone help me with an AOL connection?

I have been using AOL for several years (10 maybe) with no problems
until
about a month ago the connection would “freeze” after a few minutes.

I am using a PowerPC 6500/250. The AOL setup detects an “Apple Express
Modem”
which I have chosen in AOL. The Apple Chooser modem is set for
“GeoPort/Express Modem” (several other modem selections give the same
results). I have done a clean install of the system 8.0 software and
reinstalled AOL 4.0. I have run Norton Disk Doctor and AntiVirus. I have
48
MB of memory (adding 49 MB of virtual memory does not help). Increasing
the
“Preferred Size” of the AOL memory from 9000 to 17000 does not help. I
have
tried reducing extensions to the bare minimum without effect.

So everything works fine until I connect with AOL and then I have a
minute or
two to send and download e-mail messages but nothing more. I have been
advised that AOL may have upgraded their communication software which is
now
incompatible with my modem software.

I had learned that the Apple Express Modem software does not install
automatically when you install the System 8.0 software and had been told
to
do a custom installation, which I did. Also, the required GeoPort
software
(extensions, preferences, etc.) listed in the Apple TIL article (thanks
Brad)
are in their proper places in the System Folder. I don’t think it is a
modem
software problem since connections had been fine for several (many?)
months
after I had upgraded to system 8.0 and the fax function works fine. I'm
not
eager to buy more hardware.

I do routinely trash the Art Database along with the Browser Cache and
several other items in the System Folder: Preferences and this helps but
is
not a solution. I dial AOL directly (610-382-3200); using other AOL
numbers
does not help. AppleTalk is inactive.

The problem appears to be cumulative, so that when everything is fresh
and
clean I can run for 5 or 6 minutes but with each successive log-on
(after
trashing some Preferences items) the functioning time decreases.
Eventually I
have to reinstall the AOL software.

Any other suggestions?
