Hello to all Mac users. First time owner here. I have a Power Mac G4 Cube that
was a hand
me down, still trying to get use to it. One of the problems I'm having is that
it still has the
previous owner password and I have no way of retrieving it. Does anyone know of
any way
that I can reconfigure this thing and get rid of that password. Thanks to all.

If you have the original Restore CD/DVD or an Install CD for the OS you can
reset the
password from the CD/DVD.

Restart the machine with the CD inserted in the DVD drive. Hold either the C or
Option key.
C will restart from the CD and Option will let you choose the CD. Once restarted
you will find
a reset password option from under the Apple menu icon. Select it and follow the
instructions.

I have a Mac mini running 10.4.11. Sometimes I create documents that have
identical
names, with a changed date code in the file name. I usually use NeoOffice to
create Word-
compatible docs, and I also use TextEdit. I both cases, whenever I Save or Save
As, the
names of existing documents are always grayed, and I cannot click on an existing
file name
to name the new doc. This has been the case since the day I bought my mini. Is
there
something deep in System Preferences or Terminal or elsewhere that I can change
to correct
this?

Try going from right to left ;-)

Seriously, what's the problem you're having? You will need:

1) a font which contains the arabic alphabet (any Unicode font will
probably suffice)
2) a word processing app that supports right-to-left
3) switching to the keyboard layout for arabic

How far have you gotten?

putting os x in
and pushing "install 9 drivers,"That didn't work so I am trying it from the
other end. I have a
clean install for 9.0 now. If I put the 9.1 cd in ,I get an error that you can

from 9.0. The "select" button never becomes available.I only get a "go back"
button. I am
pushing down the c button when I put in the 9.1 cd and reboot
My bios on 9 before was 154. I assume it is that now but can't see that as

You need to startup the computer ("boot") from the CD.

Restart and hold down the C key. Keep holding C until you see the happy
mac.

If the computer won't boot from the CD, then it's either not a mac that can
boot into OS9, or your OS9 CD is too old for that particular mac.

Alternatively, you could make your life easier and download this OS 9.2.2
system folder that I use for easy installation of the Classic environment.

Hello folks,

I'm thinking of getting a new Mac, which will make my iMac G3
available for sale.

- running Tiger
- CD drive is a little sticky
- has FireWire; supports FireWire Target Disk Mode
- I've been using it as my Retrospect Backup server
- I can probably throw in an (original) Tiger Installation DVD
- make an offer?

Does anyone here have any interest in it before I put it on CraigsList?

Try booting the computer normally and then run the update from the CD. Some
Apple updates require you to install them that way. I downloaded 9.1 Update from
the Apple website and it updated from the hard drive.

Your going at this the right way now. I find it better to install OS 9 first
before OS X. But you will have to install 9.2 and update to 9.2.2 to have
classic. Then install and update OS X. When you start classic for the first
time it will install the classic component for you in the OS 9 folder.

For full software compatibility and best running speed I suggest restarting in
OS 9 when you need to use it, and not use Classic. Older machines like yours
slow down significantly when running the Classic environment under OS X.

I don't think you can update 9.1 to 9.2. You will have to install 9.2
on it's own then update that to 9.2.2 over the internet. But be aware
that each time you do a clean install it leaves behind the old system
folder renamed "Folder". This could explain the confusion. Suggest you
trash all OS 9 folders installed to date and start over. First open
the startup control panel and select the OS X folder called System
(10.3.9). Move all OS 9 folders to the trash and restart normally.
Empty the trash, then insert the 9.2 CD and restart with the 'C' key
held down. Do a regular install (not clean install) of 9.2. You should
click Options and de-select "Update hard disk driver" (no check mark).
After install completes, startup from the new 9.2 system folder and
configure internet access. Then you can use the Software Update
control panel to get 9.2.2 onto your hard drive. Restart in 10.3.9 and
go to the classic control panel. Select 9.2.2 to use for classic and
click "Start". OS X will then install the classic component for you.

Let us know how this works out for you. Any other OS 9 issues I'll be
happy to help out.

Hi Lana!

I didn't follow all your messages but if you are trying to use Classic
after reinstalling System 9.0, you may have overlooked the correct way
to reinstall the system software, in accordance with Apple's
directions, and, comsequently, may be running into so,e problems.
Please see this article entitled "Mac OS X: Reinstalling Mac OS 9 or
recovering from a software restore" on Apple's web site at
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1585?viewlocale=en_US
  >

Also, you will find a plethora of info about installing, updating, and
troubleshooting System 9 on Apple's web site at

MacUpdate is currently offering a bundle of 11 applications for $50.

It's a nice list of titles for a small price.

If the laptop has a USB port then all you need is a printer with a driver for OS
9. Version tracker should be able to help with that. If the laptop has the older
style serial printer/modem port then your out of luck for a new printer. No one
make them for the old style, mac only port any more.

This is getting to be quite an adventure. I removed all 9.1 versions.
However after trying to follow your instructions (or trying to) I had to update
the drivers and do a clean install to get 9.1 on at all. Then I had 9.1 and
connected to the internet. I upgraded to 9.2. Then I tried to install os x twice
without success. It froze in the optimizing hd phase . I decided to go back to
9.2 and ask for more instructions. I appreciate your patience. What do I go from
here?

I finally did it but in a rather round about way. I installed 9.2 and then
updated it. Then I had a problem getting 10.03 to go on. It stopped at
optimizing the hard drive. I then put in 10.3 which archived the previous os x
program without requiring a clean install. Once 10.3 was on I deleted the os x
10.03,leaving classic and 10.3 on the computer.I didn't even have to create a
new file for classic. if I click on 9 applications, classic opens up without a
problem. I even installed a program,Star power,that only works on 9.
I am sure I broke some rules doing this but it worked.I thank you for your
guidance. This has been a learning experience.
