Hi Guys,

I know the answer to my question is in front of me but I haven't been
able to see it.

A little help would be appreciated.

My son visited over the weekend and he set up a "hello" greeting so
each time I turn on my laptop, a mechanical voice greets me with a
short sentence.

At first, it was enjoyable, but now it's a distraction. I really
prefer the silence.

So how do I get rid of the greeting? I've used different phrases in
the help menu but obviously, I'm not using the right key words when
searching.

Have you tried powering off the airport unit and your computer for a few
minutes

If after that, you still have problems, it could be:

1) could be faulty airport unit
2) could be bad location for airport unit
3) could be interference from other devices
4) could be you're in a location that has low signal strength

The easiest blog in the world is www.posterous.com

Works from any computer and you can submit entries via email (you don't even
have to visit the site to add something to your blog)

I think it rocks

Hi Guys,

My iBook has OS X 10.4.11. Creating a blog from scratch is on my
radar screen for the first time.

I never paid attention to this option before this week and am at the
beginning of the learning curve.

I've read google websites on blog building, i.e WordPress, etc.. It's
obvious I need some "starter guidance".

I'm hoping it can come from this list. I'd like to hear from anyone
who will talk to me about creating a blog in a way that maximizes the
capabilities of my iBook.

Suggestions? Insights? I don't need hand holding, but I learned long
ago to ask questions and learn from others before jumping into
something totally new to me.

Hi All:

Have a Mac Pro 1.1 Dual core Xenon 3 GHz.

System profiler says about my (standard with this model) optical drive:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:

Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Can I use a large-capacity disk in this drive? I want to burn a wedding home
video of about 5.25 GB

Free.

Could be useful for setting up vintage Macs on the Internet. Sorry, the diskette
is missing; not sure if I have a copy anywhere.

Also an interesting look back in time to the early Internet.

Free and open-source software is good for you and good for the world.
This is the best free Mac software that we know of.

   <http://www.opensourcemac.org/> Open Source Mac
<http://www.opensourcemac.org/> is a simple list of the best free and
open source software for Mac OS X. We aren't trying to be a
comprehensive listing of every open-source mac app, instead we want to
showcase the best, most important, and easiest to use. This page should
be a handy reference and a useful tool for getting more people to start
using free and open-source software.

I would go to either 10.4 or 10.5 (and to my knowledge you can upgrade

directly from 10.2). You can get them on ebay for cheap.

You should upgrade your ram at the same time, if you don't have at least 1

gigabyte. (quicksilver can take up to 1.5 gb)

Thanks Tom.

My apologies, I realize I worded that question almost completely wrong.

We're looking for a program that will allow us to make our own stock numbers and
then get those stock numbers onto a label (in a barcode-like form) that can be
scanned. The end result being to eliminate manual input when we sell merchandise
or when we're updating stock.

Or if anyone out there has another option that will get us the same end result
please feel free to let us know.

Thank you again.

Morgan

Morgan,

Are you publishing books? That is what the ISBN is for. The ISBNs
(International Standard Book Numbers) are only available through Bowker,
which is the exclusive US ISBN agency. That said, some companies buy from
Bowker, and then allow you to buy from them. A quick google search of ISBN
will turn up lots of possibilites. Once you register a book and obtain its
ISBN you have the option of getting that in barcode format. So, if you are
publishing book material, you may want to get an ISBN for each product, and
then choose to get the barcodes, which are emailed in electronic files to
you.

But if you are not publishing books, you will not want to get an ISBN, but
certainly barcodes would be helpful. I would think that you get the ability
to create those through the software system you use, but I am not sure.

Hope this helps some, Tom

... and do the job for free!

Free and open-source software is good for you and good for the world.
This is the best free Mac software that we know of.

Open Source Mac <http://www.opensourcemac.org/> is a simple list of
the best free and open source software for Mac OS X. We aren't trying to
be a comprehensive listing of every open-source mac app, instead we want
to showcase the best, most important, and easiest to use. This page
should be a handy reference and a useful tool for getting more people to
start using free and open-source software.

Gotcha.
See message #2672:

I thought I'd share this.

I couldn't change my Network prefs. I'd get a message that another
application
has changed my settings. I tried deleting anything suspicious... plists
and
anything remotely suggesting network settings, but nothing worked until
I found
this:

1 - Open System Preferences.

2 - Click on Security (any preference pane besides network that gives
you the
padlock will work, but Security is the best choice as you'll see in the
next
step.)

3 - Check the box "Require password to unlock each secure system
preference".

4 - Click the lock to prevent further changes.

5 - Open up the Network preference pane.

6 - Click the lock to make changes.

7 - You should then be able to make network changes. (Enter admin user
name and
password.)

(It seems that this is a known issue with Apple.)

She's probably getting that infamous network control panel error message
where it keeps telling you that another application is making changes. The
message is so persistent, that it prevents you from quitting system
preferences.

The temporary fix is to press command-Q on the keyboard _immediately_ after
clicking the OK button with your mouse pointer. This will get system prefs
to quit properly.

But the proper, long-term solution is:
