Thank you for posting both the vintage photos and current photos of the Super
Fresh in New Jersey.

I worked for A&P From 1976-78 and again from 1982-93.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the old Hobart coffee grinders still in use.
Those things are from the 1940's! I opened the top cover of a few back in the
80's and found service cards in a little pocket inside with the dates of service
and the initials of the serviceman. The card had dates going back to the early
60s! Pop the top on them and you may be surprised. Their longevity is a
testament to the way they built things back then.

Thanks for the photos!

Your welcome! I've been meaning to scan this material and take a set of photos
of the store now for a while. Glad they are being enjoyed!

Thanks for the tip about the Hobart grinders. As they break down now they are
being replaced with the new, smaller models but we still have two operating. One
thing about the Hobarts is they weigh a TON! In comparison the new grinders are
very light.

I'm so glad to see the addition of more pictures to the group.

Anpmogul, you've got quite a nice collection of stuff there. I actually have a
few items of vintage A&P collectibles. Nothing that compares to your fine
selection, though. They're somewhere in my basement. Real history in the A&P
that's for sure.

Thanks to John (jsf0864) for posting the the closeup pictures of the Hobart
grinder. I've actually got a metal A&P Coffee Service logo from one of those
grinders. It's about 8 inches long and fits in the curved section above the
frame for the grind selector card. I'll dig it out one of these days and take a
picture of it.

Kudos to both of you!

Photos of Sylva and Bryson City bring back some memories of going to Cherokee,
Maggie Valley and Smokey Mountains National Park. Since we camped, a trip to the
A&P was requisite for meat, etc. back in the 70's and 80's. You wouldn't
happened to have gotten photos of the Franklin, NC and Murphy, NC centennial
style A&P's would you? Franklin was smaller than Bryson City and Murphy maybe a
little larger. The Sylva store opened in the 78-82 timeframe, but I can't
remember which. Further north in Boone, NC an A&P of similar vintage was near
Boone Mall, close to Appalachian State U. Sylva, Culowhee actually, is home to
Western Carolina U, so I guess being college towns and tourist destinations
provided a familiar banner to out of staters, even for people from areas that
A&P had already closed up shop.

A&P hung on fairly strong in several tourist markets, long after neighboring
areas had lost A&P. Myrtle Beach, SC had close to a dozen A&P stores ranging
from centennials to a FutureStore when the 90's began. Cape Code, MA was another
area that A&P survived into this millennium, long after the rest of
Massachusetts and neighboring Rhode Island no longer had any A&P's.

Your Welcome, Ernie. I've noticed the grinders don't seem to be used as much as
they used to. I buy EOC whole bean myself, but grind it before brewing, so maybe
home grinders have something to do with this. Or the fact that EOC also has a
pre-ground variety now.One of the grinders we had still had one of those A&P
Coffee Service badges you mentioned, but most are missing them.

I've also been enjoying anpmogul's photo album, nice collection!

Glad that the photos of the Sylva and Bryson City A&P stores brought back so
many happy memories for you. Unfortunately, those were the only two A&P stores
that I happened across in my travels in western North Carolina.

Wisconsin, A&P's Milwaukee-based Kohl's Food Stores ran television ads with the

Just finished visiting the exhibit in Paterson. You guys did a fantastic job of
covering just about everything! One scary thing is that I do remember many of
the items from my early days with the company or when meeting my dad after his
shift ended. As a child I often went shopping with my parents at the A&P on
Kinderkamack Road in River Edge, which would be the first store I worked in. So
many of the packages and brands are forever engrained in my minds eye and the
exhibit brought back fond memories. Employees and customers young and old would
get a kick by traveling back in time. Thanks for the memories.

As some of you know, my position at A&P was eliminated as of January 8th and I
was laid off. In the almost 16 years with the company, I developed a strong
appreciation and admiration of A&P's history. For the last 14 years, the A&P
Historical Society has kept the Company's history alive through various events
and activities. After almost 12 years, I am stepping down as President. Walt
Waholek will be the acting President until such time a new election can occur.
I wish the Historical Society continued success in its Memorabilia Acquisitions
and keeping A&P's amazing story of its history alive. Walt plans to continue
where I left off and keep the Society going as strong as ever. All the best.

Hi,
Does anyone have or know of a list of former A&P locations mainly in the New
York City area? When I was a kid growing up in the 1970s and 80s I remember
walking to the local A&P stores in our area in the Bronx. We had something like
8-10 within walking distance (grandma liked to walk alot). In the early 80s most
of them closed and the last one in the Bronx closed in the 2000s.
When I was working for a food distributor as a driver in the early 1990s I
visited alot of small independents in the Bronx as well as the rest of the tri
state area and found that many of these had been small A&P stores. I could not
belive how many stores they had in this area. I found many old A&P that were
being used as C-Towns or Pioneers.
Thanks,
Anthony

When I was President of the A&P Historical Society I put together a list of a
few thousand locations. I don't have that list anymore but I will see if I can
get it from the new President. Not sure if he monitors this site or not.
