Are We There Yet?
An Agile Planning, Estimating and Tracking Workshop
Every project needs to deal with dates, scope, cost -- the traditional
elements of project management. Agile projects are no different, but
agile project management differs from traditional project management
in several key ways.
This month we tackle a few of the more common "myths and legends" of
agile development. Some folks believe agile projects simply "deliver
whatever they deliver" and there is no real planning involved. Some
say agile doesn't consider deadlines and allows scope to change
uncontrollably. As we'll see, these and other misconceptions about
project management in agile simply aren't true.
This is a hands-on session. Sure, there will be a bit of information
presented, but the focus on this workshop is to give you hands-on
experience in agile project management. We'll be engaging in a series
of exercises and targeted situation-solving discussions that will
illustrate some of the key techniques of agile estimating, planning
and tracking.
In this session, we'll cover:
- The principles behind iterative/incremental planning.
- How strategic (long-term "release") planning works in agile.
- Demystifying story-point estimating.
- Concrete techniques such as planning poker and burn-down charts.
- How tactical (short-term iteration/sprint) planning works in agile.
- Using feedback for tracking agile projects and improving our plans.
In agile processes, project management is a collaborative team
activity. Everyone on the team benefits from knowing how to create
agile plans and guide projects to successful delivery.
