Design Patterns in an Agile Environment

Presentation and Q&A: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM PDT
Registration Deadline: 8:00 AM, July 21, 2008 PDT

This webinar breaks the myth that every iteration must be focused on customer value. No customer value is delivered until the release. While releases should be based on customer value, individual stories should be based on a combination of customer value, risk mitigation and business value. This seminar relates an actual project where quality coding techniques were used to manifest the Lean principles of optimize the whole, deliver fast, defer commitment, build quality in and create knowledge. This session covers:

  • Using encapsulation to defer commitment
  • The need for risk mitigation in picking stories
  • How to decide what stories to work on when customer value can't do it

Scaling Scrum to the Enterprise with Scrum#

Scrum# is an extension of Scrum.  I like to think that Scrum# is to Scrum the way Physics is to Engineering. It helps both understand why something works and what you can do when your current practices don't apply well.

Several Net Objectives' consultants are currently writing a book on Scrum#.  I believe the best way to introduce Scrum# is to let you read the preface to that book.  Learn more about Scrum# by reading from our upcoming book.  Selected Chapters:

The use of stories in agile projects is commonplace. However, teams in many organizations have discovered limitations in the user story's narrow view in complex projects. Attempts to coordinate related stories through "epics" and "themes" may help the details of managing the problem but generally leave the enterprise view unaddressed—particularly when multiple teams are working together. In this seminar, Alan helps you expand the typical use of stories to keep the bigger business needs in mind, while building the smaller pieces that the stories describe. This seminar will be given by the author of the book "Design Patterns Explained ", Alan Shalloway.

There runs a heated debate about how to build application architectures. Many practitioners believe you must design up front, others feel that doing so leads to over-design. Unfortunately, much of this debate is based on practices, not principles. Practices must change when one finds oneself in a different context. Principles do not. This talk presents a background of several useful principles which can help in building an application architecture dynamically. This seminar will be given by the author of the book "Emergent Design: The Evolutionary Nature of Professional Software Development", Scott Bain.
