**ARTICLE -- Chicken Soup For Your Computer
Many HomeBizByte articles are written based on true life
experiences at HomeBusinessOnline.com. This one is no
exception.
Recently, Heidi's computer seemed to come down with the flu. It
started making coughing and wheezing sounds. Then it would quit
working altogether. Well around here a sick computer is more of
a disaster than a sick child. You can give the sick child some
chicken soup, tuck them into bed... problem solved. I wasn't
sure if chicken soup would be good idea for Heidi's computer.
So I decided to take a look under the hood of Heidi's computer,
I found the CPU fan hardly moving. Thus the coughing and
wheezing. But the coughing and wheezing was not from a virus, it
was DUST! Lots of dust. The computer was less than a year old.
Dust had found it's way to the workings of the fan and had
caused it to slow down making the CPU over heat and shutdown.
Apparently, more than 27 tons of dust fall to the earth each
day. Nearly 10,000 tons every year! And I think it all landed
in Heidi's computer. After giving the inside of her computer a
good cleaning, the coughing and wheezing went away for a time
and the fan seemed to be working fine. But after a few days we
could start to hear the fan making funny noises again. The dust
damage was done. We had to replace the fan with a new one. If
only we had cleaned the computer earlier.
It is recommended that you clean (or have cleaned) the inside of
your computer twice a year. And the outside, even more
frequently.
Professor Tang Lee with the University of Calgary's faculty of
environmental design has been heard to say,
"Our fascination with high tech equipment gives germs more
opportunity to travel on all those buttons on computer
keyboards, fax machines, telephones and printers etc. Common
causes of indoor workers taking sick leave are colds, flu
pneumonia and strep throat. Most likely source for these
germs, the Computer Equipment."
Well if that doesn't convince you to clean your computer, I
don't know what does. Actually, a dirty computer can be very
expensive. Not only in repairs and downtime, but possibly lost
data. So do yourself a favor and clean your computer. Your
computer will thank you. Really it will.
Many retail computer companies offer computer cleaning service.
Prices range from $19.95 to $49.95. Sometimes they will clean it
for free if you upgrade or have other service done. However,
this does not include cleaning the outside. Some companies offer
cleaning up your hard drive from files that your computer is no
longer using. We will save this topic for another article.
The following are instructions and suggestions for cleaning and
maintaining a happy computer. This includes the keyboard, the
computer box(central processing unit, CPU, box, etc.) and the
monitor.
First let me provide this warning. If you are not comfortable
poking around the inside of your computer, let a professional do
the cleaning. Static electricity is potentially very dangerous
to the inside of your computer. With that said, cleaning the
inside of a computer is not too hard.
Let's start with the keyboard...
1. Properly shut down and unplug your computer.
2. Disconnect the keyboard from the computer.
3. Using a vacuum (with brush attachment) and some compressed
or canned air, clean the dust and other crumbs from your
keyboard. You may have to remove some keys to get to bigger
pieces.
4. Clean the keyboard with computer cleaner purchased from
your favorite computer store. Some household cleaners will
also work but be careful you don't remove the letters from
your keys. If you're like me, they are still very important.
5. Use a lint-free cloth to dry your keyboard.
6. Blow-dry your keyboard with compressed or canned air.
7. Re-examine your keyboard and check for any dust or dirt
that tried to escape your efforts and set aside.
Note: Canned compressed air, computer cleaners and lint-free
cloths are available at many computer stores. You may also
find small vacuums made for cleaning computer equipment. I
found the best price on canned compressed air at Costco. Also
available online at Costco.com.
The Box, CPU, Computer
This is the most sensitive part of the computer. It is best to
clean it where it sits, however I like to move it to a part of
the house where I can control the dust that will be fleeing
your computer. Plus you will want to clean around the area
where your computer has been living. You never know what may
be lurking behind your computer.
1. Unplug all cables and power cord from the back of your
computer. You may want to label you cables so you'll know
where they go back when you are done cleaning your computer.
2. Remove the cover from your computer. There will be some
screws behind or on the side that will need to be removed.
When you remove the cover, be aware of wires or cables that
may be caught up inside the cover. Place the cover aside to be
cleaned in a moment.
3. Using the vacuum, first remove as much of the dust as
possible.
4. With some compressed or canned air and the vacuum continue
cleaning. Pay close attention to the power supply and fans. If
you have to touch anything in the computer, touch the outside
metal case first. This should ground you to the computer and
prevent a static discharge.
5. Using your favorite computer cleaner, clean the entire
cover and outside of the computer. DO NOT USE IT ON THE
INSIDE! Dry outside with a lint free cloth.
6. Replace cover and reconnect cables and reposition computer.
The Monitor
1. Turn Your monitor "OFF" and unplug.
2. Remove dust from the outside of your monitor with your
vacuum using the brush attachment. Check the vented areas.
With some compressed or canned air and the vacuum continue
cleaning.
3. Clean the outside with your favorite computer cleaner. Be
careful not to get liquid inside the monitor.
4. Return monitor to its original place and reconnect cables.
5. Clean the monitor screen with an Anti-glare screen cleaner.
Wow, what a difference! Now don't forget your printer. Oh, one
more thing. Chicken soup doesn't work on your computer.
Good luck and happy cleaning,
Dave

"Market With Your Own Cassette"
by Kevin Nunley
Cassettes are a great marketing tool. You can put your
information on a tape and let people listen to it on their way to
work, while they are relaxing, or while they're working.
The recording industry is doing their best to phase out cassettes
which have never been as profitable as CDs. But the simple
cassette just won't die. Almost everyone has a cassette player
and will for years to come.
Record your tape yourself. If you use a small recorder or boom
box, get a cheap microphone from Radio Shack to improve the
sound. You can also record using the sound card on your
computer. Check the multimedia section of tucows.com for
software that lets you record four tracks. This will let you add
music to the beginning and end of your talk.
Check with musicians and music stores for small but well-
equipped home studios who can do a professional job for very
little money.
Look in the Yellow Pages for cassette duplication firms. Shorter
cassettes tailored to the length of your talk can cost from 15 to
30 cents per tape.
