As I had already done a fair bit of work on the Portland Terminal's
list of industries in Portland, it was relatively easy to add some
information to Tim's list. I think Tim is right in suggesting it is a
list of shipper's and consignee's, not a list of industries with side
tracks. Among those listed in Portland are several steamship agents,
all of whom used general wharf trackage (either Maine State Pier or
wharves owned by Grand Trunk or Portland Terminal). It also has
English Clays who shipped clay from Fowey England for paper mills
before they started digging up Georgia for that purpose but used
Portland Terminal facilities. As well, Sears would have received
their carloads at a team track. There are several I could not locate
using several years' city directories; many of these appear to be
individual names though I am not quite sure what to make of that.
I am uploading an Excel spreadsheet with what I can add. It has the
Yard location from the Portland Terminal industry list (similar to
the group designation on the 1944 Boston industries list I uploaded)
if there was one; the 1957 address (that's the closest year city
directory I have to 1955), the commodity taken from the directort,
and some comments. these are often corrections to the list. I think
most of these "errors" are in the original and not introduced by Tim.
I look forward to others additions (and corrections) to what I have
uploaded here and to other parts of Tim's list.
