How accurate were these HO models and how does the Walthers model compare to the

there are photos of this car (not very good ones) on p 28-29 of the R Jones
Forest River & Mountain. These cars were involved in all three wrecks of the Red
Wing in 1954, 55 and 57 and that is often a good source to look for pictures of
them.

Cape Beale and Cape Bauld are in the Sunshine CP color guide

Bob's Photo sells a shot of Cape Cook and Al Paterson up in Ontario sells a shot
Cape Severn

If my memory serves me well, I believe one of these cars is up in western Canada
to this day

Mike,

While I do not have a consist book for the 1946-1951 time period, I do have a
couple timetables and Stan Whitney's films "B&M in the Four Seasons Vol 1" which
has a great run by of the Kennebec at Lowell Jct and headed for Portland and
beyond. The film's narration identifies B&M Train #11 "Kennebec" headed for
Maine with an extra diner and two parlor cars. The diner is extra only because
according to the timetable this morning train did not usually carry a diner, but
it is summer time and travel was heavy and extra diners were available given the
arrival of the new stainless steel clad equipment.

The film shows the following consist:

B&M E7A Loco
Stainless Steel Combine
4 Stainless Steel Coaches
B&M Heavyweight Diner (Possibly New Hampshire)
B&M 26-DR Parlor (Beech)
B&M/MEC Buffet Parlor (Possibly Pine, Spruce, Maple, Birch, or Elm)
MEC 213-221 series Coach-smoker
2 B&M HW high window Osgood Bradley coaches
2 B&M ex-Reading Coaches (the last coach painted in Reading Greeen and lettered
below the windows for the B&M)

Here's what else is known:

The combine and coaches ahead of the diner and parlor cars were usually bound
for Bangor, except in the summer time when this train went to Ellsworth, ME. The
diner went between Boston and Portland, the first parlor car went between Boston
and Rockland and the second parlor car went between Boston and Bangor or
Ellsworth, ME. The MEC coach-smoker went between Boston and Rockland and
possibly some of the remaining coaches because they either went on to Rockland
or only as far as Portland.

The consists certainly varied over time, but this one filmed by Stan Whitney
certainly has class.

Hope this helps.

Free Offer:

NMRO is pleased to be able to make this free offer to the general public....

SPRINGFIELD TERMINAL RAILWAY - ENGINE FACILITY PLANS

At the same time that the State of Vermont embarked upon a project of
rebuilding of US Rt 11 from the Connecticut River into downtown Springfield,
the Springfield Terminal Railway had a new enginehouse built along with
public delivery tracks and a bulk unloading trestle. After the railroad was
abandoned but before the enginehouse was torn down, a complete set of plans
for the facility was salvaged from the building. Through the generosity of
two of our NMRO friends, these 16 pages of plans were converted to digital
format and are now available for public use. Available in two versions,
large and small file/images sizes (finer detail on the larger), they may be
downloaded at the bottom of the NMRO Products page:

http://home.comcast.net/~nmro/products.htm

While either one may be printed on 8.5" x 11" paper (horizontal format), we
recommend taking the files to a copy shop for larger prints.

Hi Mike,

1. The starting point for building Beech is a Walthers HW 28-1 Parlor. The
starting point for Pine, Spruce, Maple, Birch and Elm is a Walthers HW 14
section sleeper. All of these cars need the roof from a Walthers HW 6-3 sleeper.
All but Beech require a round roof car end instead of pedimented. I'll be happy
to provide details on any of these cars.

2. The consist of the Kennebec varied by year and season. What year or timeframe
are you interested in? I like the post 1947 consists with the mix of stainless
steel and heavyweights.

If you look in the Photos section you'll see Tom's outstanding model of this
series of cars he crafted using Walthers components. I'm sure he will provide
specifics.

Prior to this, the traditional route for crafting a model of these cars was to
use the etched-brass sides produced many years ago by Concord Junction and sold
under both the Yankee Clipper label as well by CJ directly. However, be advised
that these and all CJ sides from the past were sized to use a Rivarossi core. We
know now that the Riva models had sides that were somewhat too high compared to
prototype dimensions:

http://home.att.net/~pullmanproject/Riv_Bach_BL_compared.htm

As a result, the old CJ sides can't readily be used with anything other than a
Riva core or they don't come out right.

last week, he noticed the baggage car coloring was "off". The corrected sets
are supposed to be received sometime next week. Meanwhile, I went ahead and
purchased several of the initial sets (perfect except for the baggage car)to do
all but the baggage car. I've completed three cars so far and they are
gorgeous.

There was another similarly painted Pacific, # 3681, named "William Dawes, Jr.".
One wonders if yet another may have been considered, Samuel Prescott, as all
three gentlemen shared a similar role in Revolutionary War history.

The Paul Revere was one of two Pacifics painted in blue, buff, and red
(striping) done in the early 20's for "special" trains. The other was #3681,
named William Dawes, Jr. One wonders if another named Samuel Prescott was
planned or considered, since these three gentlemen all shared a similar page in
American history. The colors matched the colors of a Revolutionary War
soldier's uniform. I've been told D&H Avon Blue is a good match. I mixed my
own buff, making it just off white. Two others were colorfully painted in that
period, #3686, The Yankee, and #3689, The Flying Yankee, both a two toned green
scheme, apparently to haul the, then, Flying Yankee.

The question was about the colors of 3688 - 'Paul Revere' in special
service.

In "Minute Man Steam", pgs. 136-137, it shows a b&w picture of 3688 in
Minute Man livery, and the description states there was special buff and
blue trim, white tires, and what looks like chromed cylinder heads. The
other sister engine, "Wm. Dawes, Jr" - 3681 was also painted same way in
Billerica in June 1927.

The "Flying Yankee" engines, 3686 and 3689, were painted similarly in two
tone green, and carried a cast Flying Yankee plaque just under the
headlight.

I can remember the last time we saw a solid consist of F units in Worcester on
the RW1 /WR2.It was in the winter of 1974-1975. We were out on a Saturday of
Sunday morning in extremely cold weather and
WR2 had an ABB set with 80 to 100 cars. The trains depature time depended on last
nights arrival into Worcester and crew rest. Around 10:00 am the train started
out, we took a few shots and then headed out to to the reservoir in West
Boylston. We walked down through the woods to the frozen ice and snow, then
waited to get the perfect shot. We waited and waited afraid to make a move and
miss the train. After quite some time we chickened out and of course missed the
perfect shot. We found out that because of extreme cold, a good size train and
the worn out units the train stalled on the climb to the summit. It had to
double the hill( there was double track out to the summit in those days),of
course we missed the big show. After that we never saw a solid consist of F
units only a stray sometimes in a mixed consist.
