Description

This forum is for anyone interested in discussing:

- Railfanning (trainwatching) in the area or in general
- Transportation in Frederick County and the surrounding areas.
- Details on the "Greater" Brunswick MD area
- Or the rich history, railroad and other of the area.

While today Brunswick is seen as a popular railfan location, a bedroom community with a commuter rail operation and an area with "small town charm," it was once a bustling company town and entertainment center rich in history, culture, and influence.
The City of Brunswick was originally organized as Berlin(among other rumored names). In 1890, as the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was laying out its plans for a new railroad facility the town was officially incorporated and given its current name. That railroad facility grew to be a 6 mile maze of tracks serving as the railroad's Eastern east-west classification yards, touted as the largest of its kind to serve a single company at the time. The railroad brought jobs, businesses, and citizens, and helped rebuild the town which it had displaced in its construction. Over this time entertainment venues in town grew area-wide, the town was one of the first communities in the state to see electrified homes, and the railroad kept the town prosperous through the war and into the 1950s when the final steam locomotives were retired and the local shops became obsolete.

Today Brunswick still has an active, albeit smaller yard, and sees over 50 trains a day. Tourism to the local museum, historic sites, and for train watching serves as the main industry, and this Main Street Community is slowly growing and reviving itself in an attempt to regain its past glories and once again be a valuable contribution to the region.

Thanks for posting the story! And thanks Alex for giving the date for this year's festival, I'm surprised I haven't seen any posters out yet. Reuben
