Dear Fellow Business SIG Members,
Below are the summarized results of our 2005 annual meeting. If you
prefer to read the formatted document, go to the "files" section here
in Yahoo.
WE STILL NEED:
1. A volunteer to coordinate the SIG officer elections. This requires
very little work. Please contact me (mamalnor@...) if you will do
this for the SIG.
WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR:
1. Suggestions for advertising the SIG. We have $1,000 to spend.
2. A member who indexes intranet data.
3. Suggestions on how to provide SIG members with current business
world trends: technology, business models, business needs, etc.
2005 BUSINESS SIG ANNUAL MEETING RESPONSE SUMMARY
1. Volunteer to handle nominations and voting for officer elections
Still need a volunteer.
2. Ideas for Seth's Annual Meeting in Toronto
Pilar Wyman will be on the Ask an Indexer panel in Toronto
Pilar might also be able to work her "Basics of Being in Business"
article into a presentation if there is interest.
We do need time for SIGs blocked out at the annual meetings. If a SIG
needs more time, they can set it up on their own. (2 responses)
How did SIGs meet at annual meeting before the SIG breakfasts?
The SIG breakfast can just become the "Member Breakfast" and if a SIG
wants to use that time for a meeting, they can arrange it.
Is SIG breakfast too social? What is goal of breakfast meeting? Is it
for the SIG to conduct an actual meeting or just exchange ideas?
SIGs (especially the larger ones) can be encouraged to set their own
meeting times-maybe in a room reserved at the meeting for that
purpose.
Eight chairs around a table at a SIG breakfast may not accommodate
enough members.
This input was forwarded to Seth Maislin.
3. What do members want from their SIG membership?
Assistance in staying abreast of trends in the business world:
technology, business models, business needs, etc. How can we provide
this?
Additional Web presence for potential jobs (Web member directory)
Opportunity to confer with colleagues on business indexing issues
(SIG listserv)
Support in keeping indexing rates high instead of doing low bids just
to get work
Exposure to publishers, packagers, authors, and other potential
clients. Other than the Web site, do you have any suggestions for
places we should advertise the SIG? Professional publications, Search
engines, etc,? We have about $1,000 to spend. If I get suggestions on
this, I will put out a SIG poll so we can vote on where to best spend
money.
4. Have you received work from SIG Web site, postcard mailing, or SIG
listserv?
One member gained one new client this past year through either the
Business SIG Web site or the Indexer Locator (not sure which one).
Four SIG members report receiving work from the Business SIG Web site
since its startup. There is a link to our site from the ASI Web site
SIG page.
5. SIG member writing Key Words article on business-related issue
Pilar Wyman is writing an article on the Basics of Being in Business
Suggested topic: "Intranet Indexing" from indexers working as
corporate in-house indexers or taxonomy folk. Do any of our members
know about indexing intranets?
6. New business
Web site suggestions: Add a scan of the SIG postcard to the site;
adjust Web site to serve clients first-make member directory the top
priority; move contact information to position subordinate to member
directory.
These suggestions have been given to our Webmaster Carolyn Weaver.
Please forward any further comments to me (mamalnor@...) or
Carolyn (webmaster@...).
