Before we vote on the refreshment break sponsorship, can you please tell us what our current bank balance is and how many members are in the Business SIG?
I don't know what the bank balance is (that's Judy's territory), but we
currently have 24 members. Costs $250 to sponsor a break, and I personally
think it's a good idea. I've done it myself in the past under my business
name.

Before we vote on the refreshment break sponsorship, can you please tell us what our current bank balance is and how many members are in the Business SIG?
I am closing this poll Nov 25, so please vote by then.
There are a lot of "newbie" members that go to the National Conferences, and this is a great way for us to get exposure to all ASI members and to recruit new members to our SIG!
Also, if anyone has any marketing ideas for the SIG, outside of the national conference, please email me. Now that we have the new website, it is a great time to get our name out there.

but I was doing it as well has holding down at least one job until 2008 when I
gain enough work to begin freelancing full time.

I've just been notified that the Business SIG web hosting account is
receiving an adminsitrative upgrade the evening Wednesday, Oct. 21. This is
a behind-the-scenes upgrade that should not affect website use, except that
the site could possibly be down for a couple of hours in the middle of the
night. Just wanted to let everyone know Just In Case.
Also, I will be on the road Oct. 23 - Nov. 7 with limited email access.
Hopefully any website changes can wait until I get back on Nov. 7.
Happy Halloween, all!

Hello,
I have truly enjoyed being the SIG chair/president for the past year and a half
or so, but, due to full-time graduate studies, work, etc, it is time for me to
step down. So, I would like to ask for a volunteer to take on this role. It is
not a difficult role, it does not take a lot of time and it can be very
rewarding in several ways (including giving back to your indexing community and
higher visibility for potential jobs and referrals). There is a lot of
opportunity for marketing the SIG, which would not only increase the SIG
exposure but also your exposure.
Please reply to me on list or privately if you are interested!
Thank you! Stephanie
Brandy, our website designer, just finished the final tweaks that had been
requested -- fixing some incompatibilities with the latest version of the
Safari browser, and curing the 'disappearing when hovering' button problem
at the bottom of the page. (A non-SIG member pointed that one out!) IMO, we
can now consider the redesign complete, and any problems are officially mine
to deal with. :-)

If you run into any problems viewing the new SIG website (e.g., an old page
comes up), refresh your Web browser and try again. In doing some minor
tweaking to the pages, I found that the old 'members' page came up when I
clicked on the 'membership' link. Refreshing the page took care of the
problem.
Do let me know if you find any glitches, either in your personal listing or
in the site as a whole. If you're experiencing technical difficulties (page
won't load, links don't work, etc.) do let me know the platform and browser
that you're using, as well as the specifics of the problem.
Thanks,

Stephanie, Carolyn, et al,
Congratulations on creating a terrific new look for the Business SIG
website! It's clear, concise, and easy to navigate.
I have a couple of comments and proposed corrections.
--on the Home Page, in the statement at the top, delete the comma after
"July"
The Business SIG was established in July, [DELETE COMMA] 2000 as a resource
for indexers of business-related materials.
--on the Membership Information page, the statement "We would love you have
you as a part of our group!" though enthusiastic seems somewhat
unprofessional to me. How about something like "We invite you to join our
group." Watered down, I know, but using the word "love" and an exclamation
point in a business communication just doesn't strike me as professional. My
.02.
Thanks to all of you for your hard work on this project.

Please keep the comments coming!
For the record, I had nothing to do with the actual redesign (aka 'look &
feel'). That was done by Brandy Madison, our professional web designer.
Stephanie and I both provided a lot of feedback to Brandy, and I've provided
technical criticism about the structure/function; but Brandy deserves the
credit for the way it looks. :-)
Carolyn
Note that for technical reasons, we were not able to use boolian searching on the redesigned site, although we are using the agreed-on subject listings. So the pages are essentially the same structure as the 'old' site, with a substantially more attractive interface. All the previous content is there, along with a more efficient/useable online membership form. (A PDF form is still available for download as well.)
Please do check out your individual listings, and make sure they're up-to-date. If you requested changes in your listing after March 1, the changes may not be reflected, so please do notify me if your listing needs to be updated to match the current public site. And yes, you will need to request changes to your listing from the webmaster as in the past.
Please provide your feedback (either onlist or to webmaster@businessindexing.com) by June 15, since we would like to officially launch the site by the middle of the month.

Hello,
There was a posting yesterday on indexing job hotline for someone in the
Washington DC area with finance/banking experience. I know we have a few people
who may be driving distance to Washington DC, so I wanted to make sure those
folks were aware of the posting. Also, as this is work for the Federal Reserve,
I wanted to offer my assistance via phone or email if any of you do get this
job...I have background, in my prior life, working with bank regulations and the
Federal Reserve. I am more than happy to provide any insight! I did post for
this position too, but since I am in Ohio, odds are they will find someone
closer to Washington DC.
I also wanted to let you know that our new website is getting closer to
completion. We had a few hangups/hiccups with it this past year, but it is
still a priority for the Business SIG list.
Have a wonderful summer!

I received an email from an author who is looking for a refernce librarian who knows how to do cataloguing so she/he can put a Publishers' Cataloguing In Publication data block in a book she is getting ready to publish. Anyone in this group interested or know anyone who might be interested? I'll be glad to pass their name along to her. I have not done any work for this author; she's just someone I contacted about my indexing services.

I sent this message out on February 27th and have not had any takers. I am
going to wait one more week and then turn the account over to the ASI
Resource Center without a treasurer. The Resource Center will send a monthly
report to the SIG manager.
If you are interested in serving as treasurer, please let me know soon.
Thanks!

From February 27th, 2009:
Hi everyone,
I have decided to step down as SIG treasurer, a position I have held since
December 2004. Could someone please volunteer to take over?
I am recommending that the SIG turn the account over to ASI's resource
center, which will slightly alter the duties of the treasurer. I am told by
Carlos Fierro (303-463-2887, ext. 113; cfierro@...) that the
treasurer will receive a monthly financial statement. Requests for bill
payments can be faxed to 303-422-8894 or sent via e-mail. They will not pay
any interest.
With the free checking account we've had since I took office, we also had a
debit card and our bills have been paid automatically that way. The new
treasurer will need to work with Stephanie to notify our creditors that we
will no longer be using the debit card.
The treasurer will also be responsible for keeping track of new members. The
SIG can request that ASI collect the funds during the annual renewal drive,
but there will be a few members who send their dues directly to the
treasurer. Dues can be paid directly to ASI using a credit card; they can
accept international payments.
Thank you all for letting me serve you as treasurer for the last 6-7 years.
If anyone has any questions they can ask me at melody@...;
Stephanie at stephanie@...; or Carlos at the ASI resource
center, cfierro@...).
Warm regards,
Melody
