One of  Dave's earliest assignments (in the mid-seventies) involved creating custom programs to sort legal indexes into locator order and then back into alpha order. Since then he has worked on many indexing, abstracting, and thesaurus projects and systems. Currently, indexing projects center around integrating Indexing Research’s Cindex into corporate and governmental publishing operations including web applications.

Greendale is a southwestern suburb of Milwaukee located just south of the SouthRidge Shopping Mall.

Greendale www.greendale.org  is the home of Reiman Publications, publishers of Country Woman, A Taste of Home, and Reminisce magazines, among others. It also features the Reiman Publications Visitor Center and Country Outlet Store, many specialty shops, and on August 17, a Green Market in the morning. Come early and stay late and discover the historic Village of Greendale, designed and constructed on the principal of clustered homes surrounded by green spaces and built as a WPA project in the late 1930s.

From any direction, once on 894 (Milwaukee bypass) get off at the 60th Street exit (Exit 7) and go south on 60th Street. Continue on 60th Street south across Grange Ave. (it is about 1.7 miles from the freeway exit to Broad Street). 60th Street bends west and becomes Northway. At the 3-way stop in front of the Village Hall (to your right), turn left onto Broad Street. There are parking lots on both sides of Broad street and also one block west on Parking Street (which is also where the Green Market will be held). The Library is one-half block south of Northway on the west side of Broad Street.

Thank you! 8=)

I can't claim credit for the color scheme; it's the one that Julie Kunshier
(the first Webmistress) devised; but I agree that it's very easy on the
eyes.

Re the 'related links' page: Suggestions for additional links are always
welcome! I add links as they come to my attention via Index-L, etc.; but
recommendations from list members are the most highly prized!

I just took another look at the SIG Web site, and it does look great. Thanks
Carolyn!

FYI...Melody Englund, Terry Hudoba, and I are working on preparing a Business
SIG postcard mailing to follow the ASI postcard mailing which is going out
now.

Hi fellow indexers,

We currently have $309.60 available in the treasury, with another $20
expected in the next few days (Yeah! A new member!). Other monies have gone
toward paying the web site fees for the year; we have $25 in a savings
account, which enabled us to get a free checking account and cannot be used.

Martha Malnor, Teresa Hudoba and I have been working on a postcard to be
mailed to the publishers. The ASI Indexer Locator postcard went out two
weeks ago and our plan is to create a similar looking postcard with a
different picture on the front and different words on the back. It is a
well-known in marketing that it takes several exposures for an ad to be
effective, and it is our hope that our postcards will build on the interest
created by the ASI postcards. They will be sent to Business publishers only
(436 editors, as opposed to 2,100 for the entire ASI list) and tell the
publishers about our web site, www.businessindexing.org .

The cost of the postcards is $173 and postage is $103. There is also the
cost of the labels and mailing them to Martha (about $15), who has
volunteered to put stamps and labels on the postcards. Cheryl Landes (who is
not even in our SIG, but who designed the ASI postcard) has volunteered to
do the layout and ordering from www.modernpostcards.com .

We would love to hear about any leads that come to you through this effort.

Thanks!

Can't remember: are dues for this SIG annual, meaning that we need to renew
in January? Sounds to me like the mailing will pretty much deplete the
treasury, since there are monthly costs to be met.

Hi Carolyn,

Yes, the renewal is annual, $20 per year, and in January. The treasury will
have approximately $30 remaining, plus the $25 in savings, until January.
The remaining web site payment ($23.85 due on 12/11 and good until 3/11) is
not included in the available funds mentioned, so we're covered, unless
there is some other expense coming up that I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Dear Fellow Business SIG Members,

On Monday, I mailed postcards advertising the Business SIG Web site to about 430 publishers.  The addresses of these publishers of business information were drawn from the list used by ASI for their recent publicity mailing.  The cards look great - very professional and attention-getting.

On the front is a photo of a man in business attire, and it says "Looking for an indexer whose business is business?"  On the back it says "Attn:  Business Publishers   Whether your publications are electronic, books, journals, databases, or Web-based, the American Society of Indexers' Business Special Interest Group (SIG) can help you find the right indexer.  We have the knowledge, training, and expertise you need to create the finishing touch for your publication:  a professionally prepared index.  Why not check us out?  Find more details about our SIG and an online directory of business indexers at:  www.businessindexing.org.  At the bottom of the card is the ASI logo and address.

If a publisher contacts you as a result of this mailing, will you please let me know so that I can monitor the success of this marketing effort?  Many thanks to the committee who put this postcard mailing together:  Melody Englund, Terri Hudoba, and Cheryl Landes.

Hi Everyone,

The Business SIG of the American Society of Indexers
(http://www.businessindexing.org) has accomplished a lot this year with the
dollars invested in it by its members. We upgraded our web site to a
commercial-free site, we increased the information available to indexers by
adding a page of links to our site, and we mailed postcards to 440
business-oriented publishers directing them to the online Indexer Locator at
the Business SIG site.

It's time to renew your membership in the Business SIG. Anyone who is a
member of ASI, Society of Indexers, IASC/SCAD, or AusSI, China Society of
Indexers, or the Association of Southern African Indexers, is welcome to
join.

The dues are US $20 per year and can be paid by check (see below) or PayPal
via my personal account at melody@.... Dues are due by
December 31, 2002.

Please make checks payable to *Business Indexing SIG* and mail to:

If you are a new member, I will email a url for the form that provides
information to our webmistress, Carolyn Weaver, so you can be included on
the web site locator list. In any event, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS
WITH YOUR CHECK SO I CAN SEND YOU A RECEIPT!

Two new Format options are now available for the Business SIG directory,
based on the 'Other' formats listed by several members: (1) Corporate
Documents and (2) Textbooks.

For the moment, I've left (1) Reports and (2) Proceedings under 'Other',
since to me these are variants of Corporate Documents, and the listees also
used slightly different wordings. If you would like to see either of those
added as a category, please let me know.

Are there other Format headings that people would like to see added to the

Please take a look at the new format listing at www.businessindexing.org and

If you have gotten work through your Business SIG membership, will you please tell me?  I don't need any job details or client names.  I would just like to know where the client got your name (Business SIG Web site?  Postcard mailing?)

This information would be extremely helpful in planning future SIG marketing efforts.  I don't want to put the SIG money where there is no result.  You can reply to the list or to me (mamalnor@...).

Martha et al,

It was about a year ago that an author contacted me about an index. I
never asked him directly, but I think he looked at the Business SIG and
contacted several people listed there.

He asked for resume, etc. and a few days later conducted a phone interview.
I did get the job and he was very nice to work with.

That was a before postcards, etc. but I do think that the SIG was
responsible for that particular job coming my way.

Hi Jim,

I put "video email" into the Google search engine and came up with 10
responses (that's not very many for Google!). I looked at the one for
about.com and it had two suggestions, one of which was free.

On Monday I posted an off-topic message asking for advice on Video Mail
applications.

I really want to thank everyone who responded to my request for information.
There was no way for me to get in touch with all of the people who replied, but
I want you all to know that the information you sent was very much appreciated
and went to good use.

After looking at a variety of services, we have elected to run a test with Video
Mail Direct. They appear to meed all of out criteria (no plug-ins, customizable
to our site, and available for resale to our end users for as little as $5 per
month.

In the event you want to look at their consumer version service, you can take a
look at my test account at http://store.vmdirect.com/amplesupply

If you want to see an example of their service, send me a note and I'll send you
a message. I haven't put any of my own videos into the account yet but they do
have a couple of canned videos that I can use.

BTW, I really want to thank the person who pointed me in their direction.

Best regards,

Jim

I took the poll and noticed I was in the majority of neither time. I don't know about others but 10 CST is much too early for me. I'm rarely awake by then (I'm on east coast).

Dear Jacqui,

Isn't 10 am CST 11 am on the east coast?  Maybe I'm confused...
