Hi everyone,

I have just received in the mail our SIG's mission statement signed by five
SIG members. (Thanks very much to the signers.) I will be sending that
signed statement to National now for their review and approval. The next
step I think will be to work on a printed brochure/member directory to send
to potential clients.

Business SIG Mission Statement
The Business SIG's mission is to provide publicity for members, serve as a
resource for job referrals among members, offer networking and information
exchange via the SIG discussion list, promote professional development, and
advance awareness of quality indexes for business-related publications.

Hi Martha,

The mission statement seems clear and to the point. Well done!

If you need additional signatures, I'd be happy to provide mine.

Hi Everyone,

I got a few suggestions after I sent out the first mission statement draft
last month, so here is a revised draft. I will leave this version open to
comment until next Monday, October 30, and then I will be sending it to five
members for signature and then on to ASI national for affiliation review. In
the meantime, I will work on the member directory/brochure. Thanks!

Hello,

I'd like to offer a couple of suggestions.

I see mentioning the date the SIG was founded as extraneous to the Mission
Statement. It would be great to include in other descriptions of the SIG,
but it's not related to the SIG's mission.

I think the benefits listed are rather vague. Exchange of what sort of
information, and for what purpose? What publisher/author information? What
kinds of tools and/or activities does the SIG provide for professional
development? What is "awareness of quality indexes," and to whom are we
promoting this awareness? I believe the benefits could be explained further,
and that the advantage of doing so would be to more clearly communicate the
value of SIG membership.

Be well,
Homer

This sounds good to me. The only thing I would change would be to
remove the "and" after "professional development,"

Hi Everyone,

The first step in affiliating our SIG with ASI is to come up with a mission
statement. Following is the proposed mission statement for the business SIG.
I have tried to make this statement both simple and broad and to make it
consistent with ASI's mission statement. I will leave this open to comment
until Monday, September 18, and then I will need to get 5 member signatures
on it before sending it in to ASI for their review. Thanks!

Mission Statement

The Business SIG began in July, 2000 as a resource for indexers of
business-related books. The SIG's mission is to provide members with
information exchange, publisher/author information, professional development,
and job referrals, and to advance awareness of quality indexes for
business-related publications.

Yahoo! has completed its acquisition of eGroups, and we're happy to
officially welcome you to the Yahoo! family. You can learn more about

We hope you'll be celebrating with us as we begin expanding our
ability to help people collaborate, exchange ideas, and build
relationships around the world.

Although we're busy working on future plans, it's important to know
that there will be no immediate changes to either the eGroups or
Yahoo! Clubs services. All of the current features, policies, and
services will continue to be supported.

Users will continue to be governed by the Terms of Service they
initially agreed to upon registering for either service. In other
words, the eGroups Terms of Service will continue to apply to eGroups
users.

Short term, we'll continue planning for the integrated service, while
trying our best to anticipate any major issues that might arise. We
will share news on our progress in the merger discussion group

FYI - here's a note I received from e-groups today...

'
Dear eGroups Moderator,

You are receiving this notice because one or more of the groups you
moderate at eGroups will likely be affected by the changes described
in this notice. Please read on.

eGroups is committed to offering you a high-quality, easy email
group service. As a business, we have two choices in paying for this
service: one, charge members for its use, or two, include targeted
text and HTML banner advertisements within emails sent to group
members. eGroups members have shown an overwhelming preference
for a free, ad-supported service...and that's what we've provided.

To continue a high-quality, free, email groups service, we would like
to notify you about two modifications to these advertising policies:

1. Improved Ad Removal
eGroups already removes banner ads from message replies so they don't
'pile up' during email discussions. We've extended this technology
to remove text ads in addition to HTML banners. All members will
benefit from this improvement to the email group experience.

2. Movement of ads to the top of messages
eGroups already inserts ads at the top of message digests, within all
announcement-only and certain discussion groups. We are extending
this policy to include all groups.

Both of these changes will go into effect early next week.

For group owners who do not wish to have ads in messages to their
groups, eGroups continues to offer a "No Advertising Option." For
$4.95 (US) per month (payable in a single annual payment of $59.40),
we will exclude all ads from the messages for your group. For more
info on this option, please see:

http://www.egroups.com/info/noads.html

Dear Dawn,

We plan to post to the ASI Web site and I'd also like to have our own Web
site. I will ask ASI if we have to be affiliated before we can post with
them, and I need a volunteer to work on our own Business SIG Web site.

A marketing directory is another good idea, but before we create one, we need
to decide whether to affiliate with ASI and whether to collect dues because
we need to have some money to produce a printed marketing directory (the
polls on these two issues are still open in e-groups). Are you thinking of a
printed directory to send to business-type publishers or something on-line? I
also think we will want to have our goals and mission statement set to post
both on the Web sites and in any printed directory we may do. What do you
think?

Dear Dawn,

I'll do my best to answer your questions...

>>1. What is the alternative to NOT being an official SIG of ASI? How does it
exist without the affiliation? More like just a club? Please explain in
detail how being affiliated with ASI more beneficial than NOT being
affiliated--more than just prestige, visibility, or such--I'm looking for
something tangible.<<

Answer: Without the ASI affiliation, the SIG is simply a group of indexers
with similar interests. Many of the indexing SIGs out there now have not
been associated with ASI in the past, but they have still been able to
market, have Web sites, share information, etc. I believe that the movement
now is for the indexing SIGs to affiliate with ASI. As for benefits of
affiliation, ASI does give $50 to the SIG for operating costs once they are
affiliated. Affiliation also forces the SIG to set goals and a mission
statement which will give us direction. I believe that affiliation will also
give us credibility with publishers, a sense of permanency, and the benefit
of learning from other ASI-affiliated SIGs.

>>2. What are the dues of the SIG right now? What is the proposed cost
change?
What will the change cover? Is there a specific budgetary process?<<

Answer: We do not have any dues yet. Nor are there any costs yet, but the
costs I anticipate include Web site/domain name charges and possibly printing
and mailing charges related to publicizing our services.

I invite other Business SIG members to add more information to better answer
Dawn's questions. Did you take a look at the initial egroups note from
7/27/00? It gives a rundown of what's happened so far in this SIG.

Thanks,
Martha

Yes, we should affiliate with ASI. This will mean that all members
should belong to one of the six affiliated indexing societies. For
example, a British member of the SIG would belong to the Society of
Indexers, not ASI.

We should postpone the dues discussion until we have a project that
actually calls for real expenditures. The Culinary Indexing SIG will
probably be producing a marketing directory; if the members want a
mailed, printed version, we will have to discuss dues.

I'd like to break down the general description of business-related
publications into specific components and see other members'
experience in indexing different kinds of business publications. I
myself would be interested in indexing tax publications and personal
finance publications. So, I'd like to see the "professional
development" component grow.

I'd like to see the beginnings of a network for referrals as well.

Two things I want to note:

(1) All members of an ASI-affiliated SIG must belong to one of the six
affiliated indexing societies, not only to ASI.

(2) If you want to poll the membership, it is easier to use the poll

Hi everybody,

Thanks for responding to the note through egroups.com. The URL for
our main page is http://www.egroups.com/group/BusinessSIG. The
description I put in is: "BusinessSIG@egroups.com is an open
forum
for indexers of business-related publications to exchange
ideas/questions/work tips with each other."

Here's what I have found out about starting our business SIG:

On ASI affiliation:
We need to decide if we are going to affiliate with ASI. If we do,
all SIG members have to be ASI members, and ASI gives us $50 spending
money. I have asked ASI for the affiliation forms to see what they
entail.

On membership fees:
We need to decide whether or not to charge dues for joining the
SIG. I found out that the culinary SIG has no dues (yet), and the
medical-science SIG currently collects a one-time fee of $25 from
members. Costs we may incur will include paying for a domain name,
Web site maintenance, printing and mailing costs…

On SIG publicity:
I have a note to send to Pilar announcing our SIG in Keywords to get
more interest. (I received 12 responses of interest to my e-mail
note on ASI-L). We can also go international by announcing the SIG
to the British, South African, Chinese, Australian, and Canadian ASI
groups if we want to.

I did not post my note asking who is interested in this SIG anywhere
except on ASI-L yet. I would like to post to Index-L and the
indexing student listserv too, and it will be important to note
whether or not SIG members need to be ASI members too.

On first order of business:
We need goal and mission statements (whether or not we affiliate with
ASI) so we know where we are going. We can poll SIG members to find
out what we all want from this SIG.

We will need SIG member(s) who can design and create a Web site for
our SIG so we can refer potential clients there.

There are other ideas I heard about from the culinary and med/sci
SIGs, but I think that the above are our top priorities, so…will
you
please answer these three questions to get us started? I'll tally
the results as they come in.

1. In your opinion, should we affiliate with ASI? (why or why not?)
2. Shall we charge dues for SIG members? (why or why not?)
3. What two (or more) things do you want to get out of membership in
this SIG?

Thanks very much!
