4th of July Events Committee Meeting Scheduled
We need help! Please participate in the 4th of July celebration!
Events Committee Meeting will take place on May 27th at City Hall,
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
Fremont-Winema National Forests Seek Public Comment
The Fremont-Winema National Forests are hosting a series of public
meetings in May to seek public feedback on the future management of 85
developed recreation sites. Through the Recreation Facilities Analysis
(RFA) process, the Forest drafted a "program of work" outlining the
proposed management of these sites over the next five years.
"The Forest is committed to responsibly serving the public by
efficiently operating and, when necessary, modifying the services to
ensure developed recreation sites are managed to health and safety
standards and provide the right opportunities in the right places,"
said Rich Kehr, Forest Staff Officer for the Fremont-Winema National
Forests.
"As demographics change and new challenges are presented, it is the
Forest's responsibility to respond and ensure that appropriate
recreation services and facilities are available to the public." The
RFA guided the Forest through the evaluation of all developed
recreation sites, including campgrounds, picnic areas, trailheads,
Sno-Parks, horse camps, cabin/lookouts, boat/swim/fish areas and
interpretative and observation sites. The study considered alignment
with the recreation niche, financial efficiency and environmental and
community stability.
The RFA helped the Forest create a sustainable program that aligns
recreation sites with visitors' desires, expectations and use. This
local process reflects a national effort to better manage and improve
the quality of developed recreation sites across the entire National
Forest system.
"Most of the developed sites on the forest were built 30-60 years
ago," said Kehr. "And we're finding that a few of these sites just
fall short in meeting today's visitors' needs, either in design,
amenities or location. In some cases, improvements are called for; in
others it makes sense to focus efforts elsewhere."
A complete copy of the proposed five-year program of work, as well as
additional information about the RFA, can be found on the Forest web
site at: www.fs.fed.us/r6/frewin/
The scheduled public workshops are the beginning of the public
involvement phase of the RFA planning process. Involvement by local
publics, surrounding communities and recreation visitors is a critical
and essential component. With the help of these constituents, this
analysis will result in a higher quality, more efficiently managed
recreation program.
"We know that many sites have special importance or memories for
people, so we encourage public input to ensure our developed
recreation sites take into consideration Forest users' desires and the
forest's special characteristics," said Kehr. "I believe our proposed
program of work is a great starting point. The ideas and information
we receive from the public will help us fine tune and prioritize the
proposed program of
work."
The following is a schedule of dates, times and locations for the public
workshops:
Summer Lake, OR Tues., May 13th at 6 PM Summer Lake Lodge, 53460
Hwy 31
Lakeview, OR Mon., May 19th, 6 PM Lakeview Interagency Office,

their feedback on the proposed program of work should mail their
comments by June 9 to: Recreation Facility Analysis, Fremont-Winema
National Forests, 2819 Dahlia St., Klamath Falls, OR 97601. Comments

Iditarod Day ~ Liz Parrish Celebration
There are two big events coming up to recognize and celebrate the
return of our own local Iditarod "musher", Liz Parrish of Rocky Point.
This is a joint project of Klamath Kiwanis, the Herald and News, and
the Running Y Ranch Resort.
May 29th, 7:00 9:00 PM, at OIT in the Student Union East Auditorium
a powerpoint slide show and informational lecture by Liz Parrish on
her recent participation in and finishing of the Iditarod race in
Alaska. Admission by donation (suggested) $4 for general admission,
$3 for seniors or students. All proceeds go to the Klamath Kiwanis'
Liz Parrish Iditarod Race Fund, to help defray the costs of the race.
June 15th, 11:00 AM 3:00 PM: "Iditarod Day" at the Running Y Ranch.
Free admission! Come out to meet the musher and her dogs. Liz Parrish
will sign autographs and her sled dogs will participate in activities
with the kids; a photographer will be on hand to take photographs of
kids with the dogs. There will be vendors and booths, as well. Sled
dog "snow booties" will be available for purchase, a great souvenir of
the Iditarod race. Watch for more information in the Herald and News.
This is a great Father's Day event, so plan to attend!
There will be a silent auction at both locations to raise additional
funds. Donations are now being accepted sporting goods, artwork,
quilts, electronics and technology, services, gift certificates, etc.
(new, please). If you have anything that you would like to contribute
to the silent auction, or if you are interested in having a vendor
booth, please contact Wendy Millard at:
wendym@... or 882-8078.
Your donations are very much appreciated.
We are hoping for a good community turn-out and participation in these
fun events. Having Klamath County represented by a local "musher" in
the world-famous Iditarod race is likely a once-in-a-lifetime event,
and we are proud of our own local Liz Parrish.
Please pass along this information to your friends and relatives.
Let's get the word out!
Thank you,
Wendy Millard, on behalf of the "Iditarod Day" committee (Klamath
Kiwanis, Herald and News, and Running Y Ranch Resort).

she's banished from the animated land of Andalasia and thrust into the
very un-magical live-action world of modern-day Manhattan...

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved
and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some
opportunities:
1. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a
small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or
activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at 1:30
PM on Thursday afternoons during the school year.
2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the
summer to help out with this very worthwhile program.
3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines
and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library
card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can
be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available
without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the
general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping
these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with Wes Stone,
the librarian, for information on how to "adopt a rack".
1. Help with sorting donations.
5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so.
Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at
783-3315.
Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP)
CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center and the Chiloquin Learns
After School program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area
Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer
list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many
different "jobs" and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM
weekdays for further information.
Two Rivers Gallery: The gallery, which is a community project and has
no paid employees, is seeking people to "gallery sit". This involves
talking to people who stop by to browse and shop. You do not need to
be an artist, but if you are, gallery hours reduce
the amount of your commission. We would like a commitment of 2-3 days
per month. Contact the Gallery @ 783-3326.
