Depends on how much you like trains, and if you plan to re-sell your house to
someone who does not share your interests.

I don't see any reason to think this is a scam. However,
<URL:http://www.viarail.ca/conditions/11472/> says

"The Sunlight Family Savings in-store booklet promotion is
now over. If you have valid coupons left, you can still
redeem them until the expiry date indicated."

You do need a coupon, not just the discount code, since
the same web page says, "One original coupon must be
surrendered for each passenger travelling to a VIA ticket
agent at the time of ticket issuance. No facsimiles
accepted."

Since the promotion is over, according to VIA, Sunlight
is presumably not giving out coupons any more. So it
looks like we missed out on this one.

The lady at sunlight advised me that I could do the following to
obtain a coupon:
1. Purchase 2 x or 3x sunlight laundry detergent
2. mail the original reciept to Sunlight Saving Booklet offer, PO 38,
Saint John New Brunswick E2L 3X1 and if they had any coupons left the
would mail me one. She said it would take them 4 - 6 weeks to process this.

I just had a look at my slide of the original loco taken on 13 June, 1982, at
the MLW plant in Montreal. The trucks and front coupler are missing. The
carbody otherwise appears intact and is supported at about normal height above
the rails, with the pilot intact.

By the way, one of the Amtrak LRC loco's was photographed from a distance in the
back of the plant as well on that date.

I remember the Futura, but there doesn't appear to have consisted of much more
than a couple of press releases and a full page ad. Likely there was some
lobbying the government, as this was the time they were moving toward what later
became VIA. There may have been some provincial rivalry involved since Futura
represented Ontario companies while the LRC partners were in Quebec. Futura
probably was a non started because the LRC had already been engineered and had a
prototype, while Futura presumably hadn't got any detailed specs. If Futura had
been built, it might still be using its original locomotives, since GM's engines
have lasted more than the LRC's Alco models.

The coach and locomotive were both scrapped prior to the first production LRC
being completed.

The story goes that Bombardier used the mechanical bits from the locomotive to
build their HR412 demonstrator.

I believe the locomotive was scrapped. I don't know of the coach.

I'm surprised Rapido isn't making a model of it as well as their Amtrak and VIA

One should be aware of activities that may disrupt one's enjoyment of life, such
as the regular passage of trains next to one's residence.

But I recall beng told a good 25 years ago of a certain well-known CPR employee
looking at a house next to the CPR Galt Sub. When he asked the real estate
agent how busy the "train tracks" were, the answer was "I think that it's
abandoned". Sometimes people are sold a bill of goods.

Tom I forgot to mention there will be a Chateau in the Winter Consist, but
it will be not in use. I forget what the Reason is, why this Chateau is
mixed in the Consist?

Not usually, but I saw the equipment from #2 going from
Union Station to the Toronto Maintenance Centre this morning,
and it did have a Château in the consist. It was immediately
behind the dining car, not ahead of the baggage car, so it
could have been in service. The Telus unit was leading, but
I didn't get any car names/numbers.

There were two Budd Oceans in service simultaneously for
one round trip last Xmas, but the last time I checked
ReserVIA, it only showed one Budd set in use for the
coming holidays.

The first Budd Ocean of the winter is scheduled to leave
Montreal Central Station tonight. It will surely be
longer at Xmas than now, so perhaps extra cars are being
moved to Montreal to expand the consist for the holidays.

I'm not under the impression that railways were particularly mindful of local
spellings. A case in point is Peterborough which was often spelled Peterboro,
with no particlular pattern or logic as the spelling varied over time.

So it appears that the railways respected the city council decision, where

the cost to make the change was not too high. (Timetable text had to be

edited in each timetable revision anyway). However, changing the map would

doubtless have been a more costly change. I expect that while the railways

were not in an expansion phase, it would seldom be modified. Was there any

evidence of other map changes over time?

The CP timetables mentioned above had at least three maps
showing the city in question, one for western Nova Scotia
(Dominion Atlantic) and southwest New Brunswick, one for
all of New Brunswick, and one for all of Canada.

All three maps say "St. John" in the 1923 timetable, and
all three say "Saint John" in 1926.

Go over on the American side, and you'll see vehicles slalom around crossing
gates all the time. I'm convinced that the Michigan driver's test requires one
to go around gates at at least 30 MPH. Even gates can't prevent a collision--

Whistling for crossings is a sensible safety precaution that saves lives.

drivers can be crazy at crossings! The article says all 3 crossings are
gated/lighted/belled so should still be safe for the motoring public, don't know
about peds & cycles though?
