According to Tom Box and what follows, I was wrong to say there were four
Manors at mid-train.

I guess I was also wrong about Tremblant Park (8715) instead of Tweedsmuir
Park (8716), but was right about Rogers Manor and Christie Manor.

I have added the car names to the following list.

Next time I will write the consist down if I have a chance.

Just curious to know if anyone else was travelling on Friday the 28th
and had the same problem.

Boarded #27 of the 28th and was told that I was sitting in seat #15B
while my ticket clearly stated 13S. Another person showed up with the
same seat assignment and he was given the single seat. I was not the
only one that this happened to, I think that half of the car had a
change in their seat assignment.

Speaking with the OBS Manager later in the trip it appears that this
had happened during the morning trip to Quebec as well, some seats
assigned on 4 different tickets.

So was this confined to MTL-QUE or did anyone else noticed this on
Friday.

I`m curious to know what VIA will say when I write them a report. Also
have noticed that there is an LRC consist in the MTL-QUE pool right now.

Returned on the last (for a while) stainless steel #14 last night. Was
a beautiful trip with a nice dinner in the Dining Room Car and a Park
car with great windows.

SMs have instructions to dishonour these tickets and charge regular full
through-fares. Some do, some don't. Note that if they decline, you can get
refunds on the unused dishonoured tickets, but only after the $15 per
segment service charge comes off.

Hi all,

Would appear I've got a full day to spend in Toronto, and would like
to do some railfanning and perhaps a trip to see some of the southern
Ontario landscape.

Any suggestions on this? I'm pretty open to almost anything and
don't necessarily need any "destination" time per se...My only main
thought is to stay away from Toronto and to not head towards Oshawa
or anywhere further north/east than that because that's how I'm
coming into Toronto.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a layover in the Toronto area on the 8th of May for
pretty much most of the day. I was hoping to meet with Jason Shron,
but am guessing he is otherwise occupied so will be having to figure
out how to occupy the the day.

I'd like to do a bit of railfanning and see some of the countryside in
the southern part of the province.

Any suggestions? I'm pretty much wide open and have no problems
getting off a train in some destination only to turn around and get
back on (I did this a couple years ago...Went to Union, asked the guy
at the ticket office "I've gotta be back here for 4pm. Where can I go
and get back?" His answer was Kingston and I ended up getting off the
train, walking through the tunnel and about 3 minutes later got on a
southbound to Toronto. Glad things were running on time!

You can do a circle trip to London. Take #85 from
Toronto (dep 10:40) to London (arr 13:41) via the
back route, then take #76 from London (dep 15:49) back
to Toronto (arr 17:49) via the main line. Except for
about a mile and a half at each end, you'll be on
completely different routes in the two direction.
Supersaver tickets are still available for both these
trains, but you should book soon -- remember the 5-day
advance purchase requirement.

If this doesn't fit your schedule, let us know the earliest
time you can start travelling, and the latest time you have
to back in Toronto, and we'll see what other suggestions
we can come up with.

A nitpicking detail, perhaps, but anybody who lives in these
parts would think of a Kingston - Toronto trip as westbound,
not southbound, even though Toronto is at a slightly lower
latitude than Kingston.

CANADIAN-PASSENGER-RAIL GROUP INFORMATION:

Scope and Mandate:
Canadian-Passenger-Rail (a.k.a. CanPassRail) is a place to discuss all
aspects of past, present, and future passenger trains and rail travel in Canada.
This includes all national, regional, commuter, and tourist rail carriers such
as VIA Rail, the current and former passenger operations of CN and CP, Ontario
Northland, BC Rail, GO Transit, West Coast Express, and Rocky Mountaineer
Railtours. Others not mentioned here are of course welcome, so long as they are
located in Canada. The general rule is, "if it runs on rails in Canada while
carrying passengers, then it's 'on-topic.'"
Although Montreal Commuter Lines do fall within the scope of
Canadian-Passenger-Rail, a greater knowledge-base on this topic exists on the
Montrain List. To find out about them, and other Canadian Rail-related lists,
go to Tim Green's Mailing List summary at
http://www.trainscan.com/fan/list.html.
Discussions regarding freight movements unrelated to passenger rail should
be posted elsewhere. We suggest the Canadian-Rails, C-P-R, or C-N-R lists for
these topics. You can also find information on other Canadian Rail-related lists
at Tim Green's excellent TrainsCan site mentioned above.

If you do the Toronto - London roundtrip, you might get lucky and be seated in a
HEP1 car on #85. London is also a good choice, because if you do wish to see a
little bit of the city the station is quite central (compared to Kingston
anyways!).

Number #14 has arrived in Halifax, a bit late. It can be seen on the
Halifax Harbour Webcam, courtesy of Chebucto:

http://webcam.chebucto.net/

The new camera has been set at a wider angle (to view the ships, its
intended purpose) than last year's camera, so it is not as easy to
determine the precise equipment. But on a clear day it isn't too
blurry.

The consist appears to be two F40s, baggage, two coaches, Skyline,
diner, four sleepers and a Park car. At the time of posting, the train
had not yet been turned.

That's good to hear. Do you have a record of the consist?

Was the Chaleur combined with the Ocean yesterday? If so,
did the Chaleur have a Skyline? In the May Branchline,
which I received today, there's a report of a Chaleur consist
from March with a dining car but no Skyline. I know that
happens occasionally when a Skyline is bad-ordered, but
I hope it hasn't become a regular practice.

Can you give us the details of the Charny-Quebec shuttle
service, for those of us who might want to make use of it
on some future trip?

For Wednesday's departure from Halifax for Montreal,
ReserVIA says that there are 2 upper berths and 1
roomette available in Easterly class. Lower berths,
double bedrooms and drawing rooms are sold out.

There are 2 upper berths, 3 lower berths, and 5 roomettes
available in Comfort Sleeper. Double bedrooms and

I suppose that if one thinks of going ³south² from Kingston to Toronto then
going from Ottawa to Vancouver could be considered going ³up north² (i.e. 4
degrees of latitude).

I was a little puzzled this morning to find a photo in the archives of the
³west² portal of the Mount Royal Tunnel, which I have always thought of as
³north², but when you look at the map it is facing almost due west!

Trains fare poorly in cleanliness
Health canada inspections

James Gordon, CanWest News Service
Published: Monday, May 01, 2006

OTTAWA - Nearly 40% of passenger trains subjected to Health Canada
sanitation inspections last year were found to have violations that
could pose human health risks if left uncorrected.

Hundreds of pages of inspection documents obtained by CanWest News
Service reveal flight, train and ship kitchens and washrooms were
regularly cited for "critical hazards," such as keeping food at
dangerous temperatures and bug infestations.

Trains were tagged most often for serious infractions.

Of 48 inspections last year, 18 identified various problems worthy of
the "critical" designation -- meaning they have the potential to make
people sick.

In one case, an inspector observed the cook on a Via Rail route
between Moncton, N.B., and Montreal not washing his hands and wearing
a ring while preparing food.

Interesting. I suppose if the passenger did not hand two tickets to
the SM and detrained at the destination of the first ticket, then
entrained with the other passengers, then there shouldn't be a
problem. That would seem to satisfy the requirements under the federal
Railway Act of a passenger to pay a fare. (I don't have a recent copy,
so there could be changes.) A determined cheapskate could always plan
on a stopover to avoid upsetting the SM. Kingston station is
connected to downtown by the municipal bus system. I have used it
several times and I believe it ran every 30 minutes when I took it
last in March.

In any event, I doubt that many people would segment a trip to save a
few dollars. I have never done it or even seriously considered it
because I usually travel VIA 1 on long trips. I suspect that only
frequent passengers would know the "ins and outs" of tariffs and
Reservia. If frequent customers get a break, then VIA shouldn't mind.

Should be required reading, especially for "characters" (and I use the term
loosely) like this guy:

A Red Deer, AB man who was hit from behind by a CP freight train while
walking along the tracks, wearing walkman headphones no less? He was only
slightly hurt, probably lucky to be alive - but to him the cruelest blow was
CP police slapping him with a $287 ticket for trespassing, while he was
still in hospital. He doesn't plan to fight the ticket (nor apparently to
sue CP), but the fine under Alberta's Trespass to Property Act could have
been up to $1,000. Worse, had he been charged under the Railway Safety act,
he could be looking at a $10,000 fine or 6 months in jail. Talk about
chutzpah!

Montreal Island east of the Dorval-Saraguay axis is built on a 45-degree

I agree, some of the bottle return & shopping cart patrol are probably
junkies & thieves. I also find it disingenous of people (someone like Terry, for
instance who at 30+ still lives with his parents), of people who have good jobs,
nice computers, & can afford to indulge their passion for Canada's Trains, to be
lumping homeless, mentally ill, and victims of circumstance as "Junkies", as if
this catchall phrase covered everyone in the mean spirited Province, in the Mega
expensive City of Vancouver. These sentiments shame us all and you should take a
lesson from Joan Baez "there but for fortune, go you or I. (sorry to be a bit
off topic here) BOB

the Dirt Pile, you were right in the middle of the Bee Hive of Activity! You
sure looked good Dan w/ the 6300 pulling that Consist out of Track 5, & then
shoving back on Track 6 to Spot the Equipment. It really brought back
memories of the "F' Unit Days.

Speaking of the Junkies at the East End of Evans Ave. there are so many of
them. It kind of reminds you of like Bugs coming out of the Woodwork! When I
was photographing #2 the past few days from the Terminal Ave. Overpass I
have seen them junkies crossing right in the path of #2 trying to push their
Shopping Carts across the Tracks. Lucky enough #2 was just pulling out of
the Yard, & their speed was slow. 1 Thing is these guys have a lot of guts
crossing in the front of a Train. I was even thinking about going under the
Terminal Ave. Overpass & shooting #2, but you never know what you might come
across in the weeds. So I'll stick to the Overpass, or the Sand Pile. :)

David
Red, White and Blue fares included meals for sleeping car passengers. I splurged
for a bedroom, really shot the works, on our honeymoon in 1967. It cost me an
extra $61 for the 2 of us, including meals! Mind you , we also stayed in the
Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City for $15 a night, and $7.50 a night in the
Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. That $61 fare was from Saskatoon to Toronto. Our
bedroom was of the type where the bed was by the window and not crossways like
the ones today. I liked that. Room service cost me an extra dollar. On returning
from Ottawa to Winnipeg, where we would be living, we were pretty much broke
except for taxi fare to our apartment, but not to worry, we had another bedroom
already paid for. This one $48! But CN had a fire in there reservation bureau (
I think ) and they had to do some scrambling to find us space, but they did.
The CTC on the CN was out between Coteau and Ottawa so our train was about 3
hours late. We awoke in the morning in northern Ontario cruising along at about
45 sec. to the mile and we arrived in Winnipeg on time. A really great trip.
Neither one of us had ever been east of Manitoba. My wife doodled all over my
nice timetable, to my chagrin, but I look back at those notes now and value them
and I now write notes in the timetables when I travel. At the time it seemed
like a lot of money but in hindsight we are so thankful we did it. I could tell
about the week we spent in Jasper Park Lodge at $5 a night but that is another
story.
Barry

This was when cheap day-use sleeper
space was available between Toronto and Sudbury - or they would buy
a coach ticket and stay with my wife and me in our drawing room.
Having "guests" from coach in one's room was not a problem in the
days when meals were not included in the sleeper fare.

Rather a propos (I'd love to do accents, but...) to have Acadian and
Evangeline on that consist...Or are they always assigned to the Ocean?

Well I got out Sunday to catch the 2nd test run mostly
staff on board to make sure all knew what to do for
the paying passengers monday. I picked up a new camera
this week and took it our for a tril run on Sunday.
With road work eliminating pull outs and trees growing
no the BCR mainline getting harder to get shots. But
did get a few got into Chekamus canyon and waited for
the train south from Whistler with a shot to the
bridge mountains and river below. After waiting it out
for a long time train came all excited ready to go and
got a few shots then the camera locked up not used to
new camera bumped a couple of buttons and train was
gone before I figured out what I had done and wrong
will know for next time! Poor button placement.

On return noted the VIA mentioned. Interesting others
running and seeing it as well! sure looked good but
missed my shot had just seen it while passing over the
bridge.

?? SO I thought there were a lot of VIA cars in the
yard #2 out late again!? I thought they were bringing
out some more so that a spare train set was going to
be ready to go as the morning train #1 is often late
or delayed so much as not making it in at all some
days delaying evening train departure!
Perhaps with full rens running on the Ocean they can
spare a full train set to be on standby in Vancouver!
It would sure make much more sense to have a train
ready to go a day ahead so that they do not have to
keep bussing passengers to a restuarant for dinner for
the VIA Silver and Blue passengers or busing folks up
line as a train is late!

Gordon!

May 1 the Whistler Mountaineer started its regular
season 1st run had some die hard rail fans other
travelers tourists in general and some media aboard.
Busses pickup in Downtown Vancouver hotels and deliver
guests to the train station er platform in north Van
west of old empty BC Rail station. New paved platform
and covered small shelter till station is built. After
unloading busses pull over to a van that takes luggage
to hotels in Whistler as they do on other trips.
152 on north bound trip. less on return as some going
on to the new Fraser Discovery route tomorrow. Some I
think came back early on bus.

Train arrived into Whistler near noon. a fleet of
Whistler local bus service city style busses were
lined up and departed the station about 12:30 to
hotels. The new convention center is under
construction so for now they are using the old BC Rail
off loading location and platform. Weather was pretty
good starting to clear off. But snowed while train was
turning around for the return trip!

A bit busy at the station as lots of construction
going on lots of busses and a # of cars I guess some
drove up while others rode train! Some tour busses as
well. Return trip it had cleared up even more for
stunning mountain views in Chec canyon and along the
shores and around Squamish. Northbound freight was
waiting to pass at Brunswick so perhaps delayed train
a bit.
A few delays with road closures for short periods
messed up a few photo opps but overall worked out
well. Some road closures for 2 hours coming up next
week.

Will post some more photos when I get caught up.

When the train passed the West Coast Railway heritage
park they had the PGE RS-3 , 2 RDC BCR budd cars, CP F
4069 and CP switcher all out and several engines
tooting horns as the train passed by!
The West Coast Railway heritage park tracks now run
from park across the street to the old BC Rail shops
now being leased by the group. with connections to the
mainline!

Consist of the Whist Mount is 2 locos gp-40-2's,
baggage power car, coach staff car at present, 2 domes
- = (Glacier dome a coach with bigger side windows and
roof windows), WCRA ex CPR open car and 2 coaches.

I think we will see the train become more popular
through the year!

Train wyes a few miles north of Whistler at wedge so a
few shots along the lake, it kindly cleared the clouds
off the mountains just before the train returned!

Great day shooting, got my missed shots from yesterday
with better view as clouds cleared off the mountains
in afternoon stunning view.
Gordon!

David, Canadian Northern must have decided to follow Montreal's geographic
convention when they named the ends of the tunnel South Portal and North Portal.
The St. Lawrence River is defined as flowing east; thus streets (and tunnels)
running away from it must be going north! It confuses the heck out of map-toting
tourists when you a native gives them directions.

I always wondered why North Portal was renamed Portal Heights - was it to make a
more attractive name for a commuter stop in a town being promoted as a real
estate development, or to avoid confusion with the CPR-Soo gateway for ticket
sellers and auditors?

I was a little puzzled this morning to find a photo in the archives of the
³west² portal of the Mount Royal Tunnel, which I have always thought of as
³north², but when you look at the map it is facing almost due west!
