Re: [CleanTech_Org] Group says electric car is is U.S. oil addiction cure

The EV is an excellent car for short distance driving. Should be marketed as a second car good for urban driving thus leveraging its low operating cost and short driving distance limits. That does not need government support. Charging that would be sort of similar to what Albertans do with car plug-ins everywhere for heating the engine block in their horrifying winter - at home or at any business. In that case one would not need a battery lease program that is being touted by the Project Better Place people.

Cheers

I read that article and it is yet another sorry excuse for the apllication of a good idea through the use of taxpayer money which we do not have. If these companies believe in this let them invest in it themselves since after we fund them they will get the profits anyway.
A better solution would be relaxing regulations on car building and enabling small companies and DIYers to get in on the action. I would love to see the formation of an open source EV development platform where we could share ideas for EV designs and learn from each other how to build truly successful designs.

Subject: [CleanTech_Org] Group says electric car is is U.S. oil addiction cure

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (Reuters) - A coalition of energy companies, automakers and shipping firms unveiled on Monday their cure for America's oil addiction – electric vehicles.

The group, the Electrification Coalition, aims to get 75 percent of miles driven fuelled by electricity by 2040, almost turning the gasoline pump into a historic roadside marker.

The change is necessary as it is too risky for the United States to import more than 65 percent of its crude oil needs, the coalition argued. As well, more than half of the world's oil supplies must pass through vulnerable maritime passageways such as the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Qatar.
