Over the past year, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs convened a Task Force, comprised of regional thought-leaders in the private, academic and non-profit sectors, to consider the challenges facing the Midwest in moving to a carbon-constrained world. The goal: to make a public statement to elected officials from the Midwest on appropriate directions for climate policy.

In June, the Task Force released its report "Embracing the Future: The Midwest and a New National Energy Policy", which represented a synthesis of the perspectives of the Task Force members:

Co-Chair:
John Rowe, Chairman and CEO of Exelon (NYSE: EXC) (one of the largest coal-burning utilities in the USA)

Active participants:
McKinsey & Company
University of Missouri (Center for Regional Competitiveness)
University of Iowa (President)
Michigan State University (President)
University of Michigan (Business School)
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago
Iowa Farm Bureau
Michigan AFL-CIO union

The Obama administration announced more details on how the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act funds will be allocated. Secretary Chiu revealed that nearly
$800 million will be made available for advanced bio-fuels research and
development as well as the development of commercial scale bio-refinery
demonstration projects. This investment will help reduce our dependence on
foreign oil and move us away from a fossil fuel based economy. The
administration is counting on the creation of millions of green jobs from this
and other investments in alternative energy.

In a presentation before national policymakers and analysts today, leading clean
energy CEOs, venture capitalists and academics unveiled the "Gigaton Throwdown,"
an assessment of the nation's clean energy potential that identifies seven
industries capable of creating 5 million clean energy jobs and reducing CO2
emissions by 5-7 gigatons by 2020. The report, a collaborative effort between
leading researchers at UC Berkeley, MIT, University of Michigan, Stanford, and
Drexel University, and clean tech leaders, challenges Washington policymakers to
remove obstacles that keep billions of capital investment dollars sitting on the
sidelines.

For many green job-seekers the prospect of a beginning or transitioning into a
career in the wind industry seems both idyllic and unattainable. In order to get
be a part of this growing industry around the world , job-seeker must be
prepared to upgrade their green education in order to both meet the requirements
of employers and be competitive in the job market. There are several such
schools and programs around the world with many more in the planning stage.
Today we are highlighting one such school in the state of Texas known
appropriately as the Texas Wind Energy Institute. The vision of the school is
position Texas as the leader in technical, managerial and professional education
for the Wind Power industry. The Institute offers certifications in basic wind
technology as well as an associate degree and the first of its kind in the
United States Doctorate degree in wind science engineering

Hi Krystal Planeters,

I write the http://Cleantechblog.com, and operate the http://Cleantech.org
portal, so I'm very passionate about the next generation of energy and the
future of the environment.

I've joined the group to help Troy ramp up the content and improve the
community. I actually own a group on Linked In with over 10,000 members and
hundreds of comments and messages a week, and am excited about bringing the
communities together.

So here's my promise:

I'm in this sector every day, so I'll keep good content coming to seed the
discussion, but you all have to help.

We are going to build the biggest and best next gen energy community on Yahoo.

Zero tolerance for junk.

And here's my request:

If you've been a great member of the group, keep it up.

If you haven't been around in a while, please come back and give us a chance.

Give me feedback on what you want, it's your group, after all.

Participate, participate, participate. Let's all learn together.

And here's our posting policy:

Rule number one is no spam.

Only posts related to energy and environment will be allowed.

No requests to join other groups except our own network!

Rant if you want, but have a point.

Absolutely no advertorials unless you ask the moderators first. If you want to

Short and sweet.

Boone Pickens announced this week that his mega wind farm was icing an eventual
4,000 MW windfarm this week.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090707/ap_on_bi_ge/us_pickens_wind_energy

Apparently he's looking for buyers for $2 Bill in turbines. A far cry from a
year ago when your credibility as a wind developer hung in part on whether or
not you had turbine supply.

As difficulty constructing the transmission lines was the stated reason for the
the about face, I guess even Texas can't always throw up a transmission line
wherever it wants. California utilities have been struggling with this issue
for years.

http://www.cleantechblog.com/2007/07/big-green-power-is-flowing-but-where.html

T&D remains the seminal issue, second only to how big are the subsidies and RPS
requirements, in building renewables into true scale.

And for those of you who haven't read the Pickens Plan to switch a chunk of our
power sector from gas to wind, and a chunk of our transport sector from oil to
gas, details at PickensPlan.com.

Hello group and thank you for the invite.

A brief introduction – I am fascinated by the ideas of alternative energy generation, but have to admit that it’s been 30+ years since I left school and therefore my understanding of various concepts are limited. I do however like to peruse YouTube occasionally to see what people are seeding into the conspiracy theory concepts.

One video I came across a while back keeps haunting my conscience because I’m not a man of faith – in other words, I’ll believe it when I see it.

This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFGiWiXMHn0 has no cut away for the 1 minute and 28 seconds it runs, and looks to be quite genuine, but I’d like to get some honest feedback on whether I should dust off my text books and brush away the cobwebs in my workshop to make an attempt to replicate this apparatus?

I’ve always been fascinated with magnets and this looks like it has potential for generating clean energy.

K

PS Could the group moderator modify the group settings so that when the reply button on outlook is clicked, that it correctly reply’s to the group as opposed to the message creator. I find this most frustrating.

I'm in the midst of switching career track from Silicon Valley software engineer (old) to green technology advocate (new).  I do this via blogging (e.g. 7gen.com), running a big forum about electric vehicles (visforvoltage.org), other EV related sites (wwwatts.net evsearch.net), writing for examiner.com (Green Transportation Examiner) ..  Also as it seems this group has some background in spiritual practices I have training in spiritual healing going back 15+ years and publish reiki.7gen.com, peaceguide.com, energy-healing.info.

Good idea to dust off your text books! I too am highly skeptical and ask myself where the energy comes from.

The energy that can be extracted from magnets is that obtained by de-magnetizing them, no? Otherwise they are no more a provider of continuous power than a compressed spring. I imagine that like any other machine the efficiency will be less than 100%, so the overall energy regained will presumably be less than the energy taken to originally magnetize the magnets.

I would love to be proved wrong! What am I missing?

I too am a skeptic, although I'd like to try to build one myself.

The electricity would more than likely come from a generator placed at one of the rotor shafts(or both). The wheel design wouldn't produce the electricity...just the continuous motion needed to run the generator at the rotor shafts. Think of the spinning wheel like the blades on a windmill. The blades don't produce the power. It's the rotor shaft's spinning that gears into the power generator. The faster the shaft spins, the more power you produce(theoretically).

I feel that the storage of energy is the thing holding back both solar and wind
generated energy for independent, off the grid use. Everyone seems to accept
lead acid batteries for this although they are expensive and not all that
environmentally friendly. If one is trying to run a say 25 family village off
the grid, on solar energy would you use lead acid batteries for night time
power? Or some other type battery like an Edison cell?

I've seen suggestions to store excess energy as heat in vegetable oil and get it
back out using Sterling engine generators, but I've seen no practical trials of
such. Anyone have thoughts or information on this?
