The NS ethanol trains have been nicknamed "The Bomb", so 5 loaded liquified
petroleum gas tank cars on B738 could qualify it as a "Baby Bomb", especially
considering it is on excepted track

Chuck - single track was given a number, 007, to keep in line with track
numbering schemes. Since there weren't any main tracks designated with a number
over 6, "Track 7" was used to designate a single main track. Handy for early
computer use as you did not mix numbers with letters to name tracks.

Good Day,

Can anyone explain the rational of which locomotives received LSL (Locomotive
Speed Limiter) equipment and which did not?

I know the following classes received it:

C40-8
C40-8W
High Numbered SD40-2
Upper Half of the B23-7 fleet
C39-8
SD60 & SD60M & I
SD80MAC
There may be others

The following classes did not receive it:

B36-7
C36-7
C30-7 & C30-7A
B40-8
GP40 & GP40-2

Any rational? I assume it is determined by the territory the units operated over
(NEC?) but I am wondering if someone has a more detailed answer.

Thanks.

LSL started out as a Harmon add-on to US&S type EL cab signal equipment. The
territory that needed it was any train running on the NEC and south of
Poughkeepsie on the Hudson Line. The first to get it were some SD40-2s to cover
road trains over the NEC and the B23-7s to cover the Hudson Line. There were
also some GP15s and GP38s equipped to cover NEC local train operations.

Later, LSL was added to C40-8s and SD60s in order to provide some higher
capacity road power to operate the road trains over the NEC out of
Enola/Harrisburg.

After that, Harmon developed a cab signal system of their own, "Ultracab", which
had the LSL functionality built in. All the SD60Ms and C40-8Ws and newer were
delivered with Ultracab installed. (It was cheaper AND better than the US&S cab
signal equipment...)

Yes. Early on before Stan Crane took the helm, virtually all MW vehicles were
Conrail blue. The hand me downs from the former carriers (which were in mostly
crappy shape) were whatever color they originally were painted.Yellow was
utilized later as it was more visible on the ROW.

The Conrail Historical Society will be holding its first ever Marion, OH
Rail-B-Q meet at the historic Marion Union Station on Saturday July 31, 2010.
This event is free to the public and everyone is welcome to come even if you are
not a member of the society.

The historic and preserved Marion Union Station is one of Ohio's railfan
hotspots that features the CSX ex C&O line running along its west side, the NS
Sandusky District running along its east side, and the CSX ex Conrail Big 4 line
running along its north side. Also on the depot's property is the restored AC
tower that used to guard the diamonds there, an preserved EL caboose, the local
model railroad club and the Shovel Restaurant.

The depot will be open for tours that day, allowing folks to get a chance to
check out all the old tower boards they have inside there and where we will be
hanging out in case it rains that day. Restored AC tower will be open as well
for tours, you can check out the restored original tower board and their
operating pistol grip interlocking lever machine, which you can try out for
yourself if you so desire. The Marion, OH model railroad club whose layout sits
on the depot's property will be open that day for tours as well.

Folks will be able to purchase food at the Shovel restaurant, which sits on the
depot's property and features an outdoor patio facing the NS Sandusky District
where you can sit, eat, and watch trains go by. The Society will have a table
with pop and snacks available throughout the day. The society will also have
CRHS merchandise available for purchase as well that day.

Later in the evening there will be a slide show with the presenters still to be
determined. If you have a nice collection of Conrail slides you'd like to show
us that evening, please contact me at chowetrains@... if interested.
For further details and updates, please visit the society's website

Folks as we remember the Conrail years and Staggers Act of 1980 which helped
Conrail become profitable. However, in Washington D.C, S2889 Surface
Transportation Reauthorization Act of 2009 which has been introduced and in this
bill it will reregulate the rail industry again and jobs losses whereas the
government will tell the rail industry what price they must charge where
consumers will end up paying a higher price on a product they purchase. I've
been a firm believe in the Staggers Act of the 1980's where it made rail and
truck more competitive in the market place. Plus, this bill will give more
control to the government. As we all remember how Conrail became successful
especially Staggers Act of 1980's help Conrail. This bill will destroy JOBS,
higher prices on consumer products, and gives government the right to break up
the rail industry as monoply. If this S2889 passes, then once again we will
return back to the Penn Central era again (Pre-Conrail era). I encourage
everyone to contact their US Senators and Representatives and oppose the S2889
bill and keep the Staggers Act of 1980.
Of course, in my own opinion that the trucking industry is getting back at the
rail roads because of the Staggers Act. We need to keep the Staggers Act of
1980's in place for a level playing field.

I'm looking for some good high resolution scans of CR 21736 painted in the white
saftey scheme. Ideally photos of each side and front and rear..

-- I'd be interested in photos of any of the New England Div. paint schemes, but
I'm really looking for photos when it wore the Buffalo Div. name. (As I recall
it has a Buffalo silhouette on the front and rear. next to the break wheels).

Contact me at "learmoia @ hotmail . com" if you have any leads on photos.

I went into the photos section before replying to this to make sure there wasn't
a server problem.    It opened fine for me.    Then I went into the
membership list and only found one recent addition listed (today's date), but it
wasn't your's.

The fact that you were able to get your message of inquiry posted okay should
mean something, though.

Very strange.    I guess we'll have to wait for moderator to reply on this.

Mark

There's a cool Conrail video of a local engine ride in 1992 on the old Erie and
Pennsy lines in Ohio.
Do an ebay serach of "Conrail local ohio" and it should pop up.

I'm a new member on the ConrailCorp list.

I've read the books "The wreck of the Penn Central" and "The men who loved
trains" by Rush Loving jr. while both were excellent reads, it left me
wondering if there is a book that documents what Conrail did to turn things
around from the Penn Central oblivion into a railroad so successful that NS and
CSX split it up.

Thanks

How many trains did Conrail operate in Canada? Why did they give up that route,
considering it was a straight shot between Buffalo and Detroit?

Here I go on my "political stump" again;
I credit  the Staggers Act for saving all American railroads (northeast was in
the worst shape), and I blame John Snow for causing the break-up of Conrail.
Snow went (or should I say sneaked) behind Levan's back and cut a deal with
NS after agreeing to work with Levan to keep the road intact.
