Subject: Conrail Layouts In California?

Send Email Send Email

If you model Conrail or its predecessors, have an operating layout in any scale,
and live in the southern half of California I'd like to talk with you about
displaying your layout on a layout tour.

The Model Railroads of Southern California group on Yahoo sponsors free layout
tours. Since 2006 we have organized twenty layout tours from Santa Barbara to
Bakersfield to San Diego and out through the Inland Empire. Over 200 layouts
have been featured on these tours.

Upcoming tours this year include including June 26 in Orange County, the
official layout tour for the Central Coast Railroad Festival (October 7-11) and
a tour of Upland-Inland Empire layouts on November 20.

In 2008, the group organized the home and club layout tours for the national
conventions of both the Santa Fe Railway Historical Society and the National
Model Railroad Association. We also will organize the layout tours for the 2011
Sn3 Symposium (Monrovia) and the 2013 National Narrow Gauge Convention
(Pasadena).

Tours are self-guided and free. We provide the publicity, schedules and maps
through the Model Railroads of Southern California website.

If you are interested in having your layout on a future tour, please contact me
OFF LIST at:

thecitrusbelt@...

If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please feel free to
contact me.

I hope you'll join with other area layout owners and show your layout to your
fellow model railroaders and the public.

Thank you.

All of these were shot with a Canon EOS Rebel and scanned from prints. (Pre
slide film, rather.) In 1999, an unpatched Conrail C39-8 leads a train to a stop
on IC rails in Memphis, TN.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=330291&nseq=1

Also in Memphis, we see CSX EMD SW1500 #1115 still in her Seaboard paint.

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=330295&nseq=0

A fasicinating lash up considering what we see now days. But in 1999/2000, a GE
B23-7 leading wasn't that rare... although one in Family Lines paint (with a CSX
nose) maybe was.

I'm working on a few more, but that might have to wait until later. It's been
fun to see if I could make lemonade out of some of these scans. Hpoe you enjoy
them.

Help me if you can......I have a photo of a penn central grain hopper #886170
with 15 ribs and painted in PC green with everything patched out with CR
stenciling.  This hopper has a plate welded attached to it between the 11th and
13th rib that had a PC logo on it painted out.  Any one know the knowledge of
this hopper's heritage before PC???  NYC?

Subject: Conrail E8 Questions

Hi All:

Looking at my information on E8's, and had a couple of questions:

a) 4000-4001, 4002-4012, 4013, 4015-4022 - anybody know which ones were
stenciled/renumbered for Conrail?

I know most of them went to the deadline in Altoona still in EL paint &
numbers, but I know that a few were
stenciled/renumbered. I also know 4022 was painted blue, but was it ever
stenciled/lettered for Conrail first, or
did it go directly from EL to Conrail blue?

b) 4042 and 4062. What's the story on these two? I saw 4039 and 4063 running
on the former NY&LB back in the
late 1970's, but have never seen or heard anything on 4042 and 4062. Perhaps
they were in the deadline at Altoona
on Day One, and thus got transferred on paper to Conrail? Anybody know if
they ever ran?

Thanks for any help!

Sincerely,

Frank

The Indiana Northeatern railroad has hosted 5-6 unit trains in the last couple
weeks complete with NS/Foreign/Lease power on these trains. since the trackage
is 10-20 mph chasing these is rather easy.

It could had been better, such as an all EMD Lash-up. But a all GE lineup NS

Thanks guys.   I was unable to discern smoke above those units in the first set
of image links.

It seemed like there was a 'blitz' about twenty years ago on the part of the
Class 1s to convert all remaining GP30s within their ownership into slugs.

I'm glad to see a few escaped that fate.

Gotta love it ehh?

The GR42A's (GBSR) have been particularly shafted. There are two other
series they are found in as well. 602000-602021 (GBS) and I also have a
622044 listed and more in the 622xxx series.

BTW, the NS series is 612742-781 class GP65.

There really isn't going to be a railfest at Altoona this year, even though the
museum turns 30 this year.  However more of the "festing" will be done at the
East Broad Top RR in Orbisonia on the first weekend in October.

  Hey Everyone,

I was wondering when Altoona Railfest is this year?

Thanks,

The East Broad Top's Fall Spectacular is the 2nd weekend of
October....October 8-10.

I believe "railfest" is the first weekend of the month.

I heard there would be no main line excursions. Not sure if that's the case
or not.
