I'm looking to create a specific day and time
where we can all meet in the Conrail Corp chat room.
Recalling some of the greatest times in Conrail history,
sharing stories, ideas, train chases, ideas and whatever
else you care to talk about. Drop me a line when you
usually make it on the net!
Also, a note for the
future, I'm in the process of making pages dedicated to
motive power news, scheduling and other interesting
notes from inside the company. I'm an NS employee out
of Harrisburg, Pa so if there's anything you need or
what not, just let me know, be more than happy to help
:)
Hello again, sorry there has'nt been to much of
anything new on here yet. I have'nt been online much in
the past 2 weeks. Thought I had unlimited access but
we don't until October 20th. I am getting ready
though, working offline setting up some links and
articles. Please, feel free to make any contributions to
the club, photos, links, ideas, whatever ya want.
I'm thinking about putting a few more treasured
things up for sale on Ebay but I thought I'd post a
message up in here first incase one of you would be
interested. I have a few Conrail Locomotive number boards
some even intact with the metal frame! Conrail air
horn covers, locomotive reversers and throttle levers.
Crew packs, timetables, calendars, employee magazines
and tons of paperwork. You name I've probably got it.
If anybody is interested let me know. On a final
note I'm this close to getting my hands on 3 perfect
condition metal Conrail and Conrail Quality panels off the
side of an 89' Auto rack!!!
Well lets see. Off the top of my head I have
Conrail crew packs unopened in mint condition. A
locomotive reverser lever, about 6" long, black in color,
Conrail air horn covers, blue nylon mesh with tie back
straps, one is about 10" the other 14", fairly new in
color. Paperwork, including Train Data Sheets, complete
what we get when we go on duty showing power, cars,
tonnage everything, tons of Timetables, employee
magazines, and a lot more. I'll go through and see what else
I can come up with. If you have anything in
particular that interests you drop me an e mail and I can
give you more descriptive ideas possible pics if I can
ever get this scanner to work.
I am selling a set of two Conrail locomotive
numberboards. They were pulled off of Conrail 6801 an SD50
built new by EMD for Conrail in May of 1985 and fell
under the order #847032. These 3,600 horsepower diesels
weighed in at 390,000 pounds operating weight. The unit
was acquired by CSX in the split. Sister unit 6802 is
owned under NS reporting marks. The two number boards
are in beautiful condition, however could use a
gentle washing to remove everyday grit and grime from
the rails. They come in at 11" wide and 30 1/2" long.
Made of plexiglass I believe. Numbers themselves are
black on a white board. I'm sure you'll take to this as
much as I have! Any questions feel free to email me. I
have one set of 2 boards up on Ebay already, and are
going for $31.00 If anybody is interested, please
contact me
~Kris
Well, hopefully I'm back online. I lost my ISP
but now I'm back so it's back up to throttle 8 with
the club...keep posted
~Kris
If anybody has any
information as to the location or story regarding the
whereabouts of Conrail 9533 please let me know...I've heard a
bunch of stories...thanx
I have sold these sheets on Ebay on average for
about $20.00 a piece. "Daily Terminal Record Of Motive
Power" is a huge 14x16" sheet that was filled out by the
Newberry Yardmaster for every train Newberry Yard saw
during that entire 24 hour period. Each sheet shows,
model number, locomotive unit number, train upon which
it arrived, original point of dispatch, time in
yard, layover point, time & date when ok'd for service,
time out for service, departure crew on duty time and
date, from engine terminal, from yard, time intervals,
time available and not used, remarks, date, weather
conditions and on average about a dozen original EL 106-A's
from every engine Newberry saw that day! Great piece
of Conrail history. All sheets date back to 1986.
You name the exact date, I've probably got it. If
you'd like one, two, or however many you want, I'm
posting them in the club for $7.00 each, free shipping.
Just drop me an email if you're interested and I can
send you pics. They are all in MINT condition and look
great framed!
Always,
~Kris
Hey everyone! It's really time for me to get back
to working on here, the past few days I've been
putting together a Yahoo! photo page full of all kinds of
Conrail and other railroad items I have that I've been
putting on Ebay for the past 2 or 3 months. I have
everything from timetables, forms, pens, prototype parts and
accessories, signs, maps anything and everything including my
newest Conrail caboose window and the recently acquired
Conrail gondola side panels! I plan on getting ahold of a
few Conrail auto carrier panels from soon to be
scrapped 89' auto racks! You can see all these pictures at
the link at the bottom of this letter. New pictures
are being added all the time as I have tons of things
to post! Just copy and paste the link and check it
out! The link is:

does ns have nothing better to do then screw
things up!?!?! If you have'nt noticed on all the ex
Conrail diesels that ns has repainted, they did a
horrible job! Good for us Conrail fans but still. They put
one single finely layed coat of ns black over top the
beautiful blue, and already on some of the SD40-2's on the
Bufallo line that are dedicated Strawberry Ridge pool
units, the blue is slowly coming through everywhere! iF
you look close enough half the engine was never even
painted! Also, does anyone have any observations on the
use of power!? For one, the dedicated SD40-2 power is
suppose to stay on the Bufallo line, due to the snow plow
remodifications with the rotary dumper clearance, so when all the
sudden a lack of ridge power arose, ns discovered half
the pool fleet in Atlanta, Chattanooga and other
various points! Also, it was the man in the tower in
Harrisburg Yard that put together the power make up for
trains. Skip always seemed to make my day by putting
Conrail power at each end, boxing in any ns power,
allowing a train to always have blue power in the lead
from both directions!
~Just my thoughts, running
amuck
Well, you know they had to do it quickly, and the
guys doing it were maybe not real happy doing it. Any
job that gets slopped through usually falls apart.
And from what I hear NS hasn't been doing that great
a job recently. on anything. I think CSX and NS bit
off way too much more than they could chew, just so
they could avoid being squeezed out by someone else. I
don't think they were ready for it, despite the
propaganda. It seems they are just tossing stuff around,
kinda like Uncle Sam......when you don't know what the
problem is, and couldn't fix it if you did......throw
money at it. NS is just trying the same type thing.
The sum of the parts no way add up to the value
of the whole thing this is not my opinion only but
te Former CEO of Conrail David M. Levan if Conrail
had just merged with the CSX as the original plan was
to be that would have worked well but to disect
Conrail was a major mistake
In all honesty though guys. Even though they paid
$10.2 billion for Conrail which I'll admit was
overpayed, I don't think either csx nor ns will ever be able
to meet the service requirements and sound
dedication that Conrail did. there has been a drastic
decrease in automotive movements, ns lost 2 trains right
off the bat to & from buffalo within weeks. Who knows
where the black diamonds are going to take us. I've
been getting trains that are so misrouted still it's
unfathomable. They have us setting cars out that should be on
the road, cars sitting in yards thqt show somewhere
else in the computer, and still cars they can't even
find, not to mention lost power! I to this day believe
firmly that Conrail could have stood alone, with all her
assets, strong foothold on what traffic we had, and the
management I know Conrail could have survived. Looking at
the SAA the Conrail there is what it has always been,
a railroad; not some scharades game like ns & csx
are playing. Thats just my opinonated mind speaking
though...from a conductors view the Conrail way.....
I'm not sure the exacts yet but there were two
wrecks on former Conrail territory. A train derailed in
Philadelphia, Pa with haz mat cars and another in Lewistown,
Pa. A lot of traffic has been rerouted on the Buffalo
line, including a slew of intermodal trains. Anybody
with additional information, please post.
~Kris
The picture shown to date was taken on the
Buffalo line between CP Linden and CP Bud. The line is
261 territory (signalled in both directions) The
controlled siding to the left is a favorite spot for
re-crewing PP&L hopper trains and a great spot for photos
like his one. Here, the conductor is crossing back to
his train with a head end box to replace the one that
is inoperative on their train.
I've missed viewing what's been posted for the
last several days because I was away, but I
whole-heartedly agree with you when you say that Conrail should
of stood along and never ever have been broken up. I
will admit it that I don't like NS way of doing
business or their conduct of operations on many levels and
many senses. I plan out think it sucks(Don't mind me,
I just wish Conrail was still around). When it
comes to blunders, God knows both companies have had
serious problems with this takeover, especially NS. I
know you mentioned the power they've been pulling
their trains with. Well around here where I live in
Indiana, PA...there's a branch line about 7 miles away in
a small town called Creekside, PA in which I will
often ride my bike to. Now several years ago Conrail
came to an agreement with the powerplant located at
the end of the line to haul coal in at least once a
week and they did so very successfully. Now to get a
picture of this, you got to imagine a blue conrail 4-axle
G.P.38(several of them) or something similar pulling a load of
about 100+ coal hopper cars into the plant. The roadbed
was horrible and you could see the locomotives
rocking back and forth and side to side. What a sight.
Conrail did try to upgrade this track a little bit and I
do recall a work train parked in Creekside one day
but they never did much more than dump a little
ballast and put some new ties in because they never
actually owned this branch line. It was in fact owned by I
believe the B R&P railroad(Note I believe this and please
correct me if you know otherwise) who had abandaned it
several years before hand. But when NS took over this,
all went to shambles. They almost immediatly had 2
wrecks within the first several months of operation of
this track because they thought "heck, instead of
having 6 4-axle locomotives pulling it up, why don't we
have 4 6-axle ones due the job". And low and behold
it's my belief that when they wouldn't take the advice
of the Conrail employees and use the 4-axle ones,
they put too much strain on this delapidated roadbed
and in turn caused their own derailment. I'm not sure
but I think that's what happened. On the bright side
I did find out that NS is going to build the first
new track in my part here in the 75 years or more.
BUT they are going to quit using the Creekside
branch. They are going to build about 10 miles or so of
track from the Conamaugh Division and connect on to
another old abandined track line and go to the power
plants that way. Another thing that I heard of and was
sort of suspecious of the guy and what he was saying,
I guess I just didn't believe him, was that NS owed
BNSF $500 million dollars. Is there any truth to this?
I just don't know what to think. Please
respond
~Amtrak and Conrail Fan Paul
I have always been under the impression that
Conrail never owned or operated any G.E. Dash 9
locomotives. Yet I got into a disscussion with a friend who
said that he thinks they did own one or two of them. I
immediatly thought "no", this can't be. But he provided me
with a websight that had some pictures of two Conrail
Dash 9s on there. Numbers 8320 and 8354. The sight is
www.dnaco.net/~gelwood/other/cr-eng.html I was wondering if anyone could
enlighten me with
whether they actually did have any or not. You'd be of
some great help
~Paul
Well I looked at both photos and as far as I ould tell they are both C40-8Ws.
They don't have the Hi-Ad trucks but the Adirondack or GSC trucks under them.
Conrail never had any GE dash 9's. As a conductor
for Conrail I never saw any, however was'nt 100
percent sure, Conrail always seemed to have something up
its sleeve so I had to cross reference it. After
looking at the pics (that screamed dash 8) I confided in
a trusty trainmaster friend of mine and we cross
referenced and found the infamous 8320 was once Conrail
C40-8W #6061 repainted in Enola, Pa. The other unit,
8354 was once Conrail C40-8W #6117 repainted in Enola,
Pa sometime after May 8, 1999.
As you can see in
the pics, ns decided after placing the black and
white vinyl stickers over the Conrail number to just
repaint the number. So I can see how this could be
mistaken for an actual Conrail road number. But then again
if you look through some of the other pictures on
that web page, he's got some pretty screwed up models
for them, ex. SD60W!?!?!? I've heard of I and M's but
never an SD60W! hahaha Hope this clears it up for you!
Happy new year! ~Kris
Hahaha I could'nt help but get a good laugh out
of the SD versus GP lash ups on the delapidated
track! That in no way at all surprises me! Not even 3
months after ns took over they tried running an
intermodal train up the Buffalo line from Harrisburg to
Buffalo. Only problem is the Farrandsville bridge that
bridges the Susquehanna is a wee tad lower than ns
expected despite crew concerns, were eventually ordered to
take the train north. So at track speed they went,
braced themselves for the event and low and behold tore
the tops off several tractor trailers. They will
never cease to amaze me! thanks for the story amk!
It is my understanding that ns owes a pretty
penny to BNSF. Hence that would explain bnsf white
shirts all over ns tracks looking things over!?!?! maybe
a sign of whats next and perhaps the first
transcontinental?
The "W" in regards to the Dash 8-40CW is the designation for Wide body.Same case
for the SD40-2's "Standard Duty"; GP38-2's "General Purpose" and C40-8 "Comfort
cab"
I made the comment regarding the link to the pics
of the 2 supposedly Dash 9 Conrail units. If you
look deeper into the pics he has, he also lists a
Conrail SD60W, Conrail never had an SD60W, M's and I's
yeah, but no W's. I don't even think EMD made an SD60W!
But, eh, whatever. I might be wrong. Just a
Conrail-roader at heart here runnin his mouth like a TV train
highballing through 261 Territory at track speed. What can I
say:) hahaha
