Nice job!

I suspect if Conrail has stayed around, you'd have seen all the B36-
7, C36-7, C30-7a, C32-8, C39-8 and SD50 models disappear and be
returned to their lessors. They were all junk and all
Conrail's "purchases" were actually 15-16 year leases. I don't think
they'd have bitten on a purchase at the end of the lease. I also
think you'd have seen more SD80MACS, but no SD70MACs - maybe 50 or so
a year. I think you have it right that they would have some AC4400s -
maybe 25 a year or so, and perhaps some GEVOs. Perhaps a few trial
SD90MACs and AC6000's would have been purchased along the way, too.

Conrail was not looking and SD70MACs. They had little need for them -
they were a poor fit for general frt service and were not much
cheaper than the 80MACs.

Yes, the Conrail power would have evolved to a much different medium...the
eastbound traffic is often heavy on the trains run around the Northeast, not
even considering some of the grades pulled over (Washington Hill, Horseshoe
Curve, Pattenburg...maybe even Keating, if the BUFL still fit the current
gameplan - since CR had 4 routes into it).

OK, I knew most were on lease, but I wasn't sure how long they would
last. It seemed like Conrail never kept anything for over 15 years,
I guess thats why (I wonder what would happen to the C40-8W's, the
first order is 14 now).

While browsing railpictures.net recently, I came
across this Conrail image:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=76801

Look at the first 2 cars of the train: Moyer Packing
stock cars. Based on the time of day, the power and
the location, I'm guessing that the train was either
TV-2 or TV-12.
I remember hearing about these cars once, but can't
remember the specifics. Does anyone else remember?

I need your help so I don't miss anything.

I just realized I need to add the MT-4's and MT-6's. Anything else?

Besides Horseshoe, and The Lehigh Gorge in the early 80's did Conrail have any
other helper districts? The only other place I can think of is New York, if
that.....

Keating Summit on the Buffalo Line, right into NS days...and likely before
bigger power arrived, Washington Hill on the Boston Line.

Most other places Conrail ran, at least since (not where) I've been fanning, are
all flatland territory...they might have struggled....but they didn't need
helpers on a regular basis.

Eric

Besides Horseshoe, and The Lehigh Gorge in the early 80's did Conrail have any
other helper districts? The only other place I can think of is New York, if
that.....

What about Gulf Summit over Starruca? I know that EL
used helpers up there but am not clear if CR did.

Great job on the roster - at some point I will project my CR roster
forward and will use this as a guide. I am avoiding purchasing the SD
70's as they had specs for the "other" railroads. One thing I wonder is
if CR would have continued the white mask scheme and if so, only for the
AC's or would they started using it on new and repaint DC units. Would
we have seen a white mask on a rebuilt dash 8W? I wish we could still
find out.

It sure would be an interesting venture...hell, I want to know what it would
have looked like on a standard cab unit?! The extra white really added a nice
design and opened more color to the otherwise blue engines. I certainly liked
blue more than black...and still do, even if I never worked for Conrail.

After seeing NS' answer to a revised paint scheme these past 2 year, I get
disgusted each time I look at it. The extra white added some neat lines & rare
color to the otherwise monotonous paint scheme. Someone higher up allegedly got
upset about "raccoon" comments to the paint scheme, that same being must have an
affinity for horses/donkeys, or something.

The least they could have done was match the lateral nose stripes parallel with
the design of the nose..giving a chevron-like appearence.

I'd hope for more C40-8W's painted at JBS and not GE!!! I'd also like
to see more EMD SD's. I tell ya what I'd like to know or rather just
have someone talk about. Wouldn't it be neat to meet the person that
came up with the idea of the white mask scheme for the MAC's?
Hmmmm.... that could be an interesting angle to investigate CRHS

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would post a for-sale ad here since I haven't done so
in a while. I still have a quite a bit of stuff left to sell. If
anyone is interested, please let me know. You can email me at my
Hotmail address (Scott1643 at hotmail.com) or just reply here and I
will get back to you. Most of my collection is Athearn 'blue box'
locomotives ranging from SD40-2's to GP38's/GP38-2's/GP40-2's to
SW1500's. Have a mix of dummy and powered locos, in various paint
schemes (standard can opener, Quality, and Operation Lifesaver) many
are custom painted, factory painted, and or renumbered. Some have
lots of details, some are still pretty much assembled only with
factory parts. Also have Atlas, Kato and Proto2000 locomotives as
well (an SD50, B40-8, SD40-2E rebuild, 3 E8's, etc) Had an
interested purchaser who I have not heard from in months who
purchased all of my P2K/Atlas/Kato power, so I have decided to resell
it all. If you have any interested please contact me and I can get
you the details on specific locomotives you might be interested in.
Also have lots of freight for sale. Very reasonable prices! Thanks!!

I think that Conrail would have kept the "Lone Ranger" scheme for its AC units
only. But a friend of mine who used to work for Conrail and now for NS told me
that the only reason the 80MACs got that scheme was so that employees could
differentiate them from the SD60M's and I's so its a question that will never be
answered only pondered. I wonder if they got the AC44's I bet they would have
come in that scheme too only to set themselves aside from the 840CW's. But tell
me this who could mistake an 80MAC for a 60M or I? A pair when passing you is
160'!!! How can you miss that going by? Happy railfanning!

Hi Mike,

  I'm thinking of making a trip out there and doing some measuring pretty soon;
thanks for the offer to help. I've seen several places like you mentioned, with
the ouside track left in around curves, in particular in Bolivar and Tyrone, PA
and between Alliance, OH and Homewood, PA.

Moyer was the last re-incarnation of the old Cross Packing co. in North
Philadelphia, PA.( located near where Juniata Term is today.) There was
also an active stockyard in Newark, NJ (until the mid 70's) where the new
NJT Airport station is today. The cars pictured coming off of Rockville
were heading to Philadelphia. I have a photo of a Cross Bros. car that I
can send out this weekend to anyone who might be interested in seeing it.
Please contact me off-list if you would like a copy of the scan.

Talk to Bob Yurvatti (?) in the Allentown area...he used to freelance draw stuff
that came to mind. His windshield visor is a "what if" Conrail AC44 / 60 in the
whiteface scheme. I imagine he still has it...
