Hello Guys,

I understand that Radiance can perform glare analyses and glare
index calculations, but I have problem using this function. I already
use Desktop Radiance version 2.0 Beta and doesn't know how
to perform glare analysis under windows or Ms-Dos. If any one knows
please send to me as it is very essential for me.

Thanks

Hello,

To use the daylight function in Desktop Radiance you have to define a grid, see the manual. Then select an overcast sky. Then you can select daylight factor.

Hello,

When using the advanced calculation parameters, there should be a
possibility to check the box 'Keep ambinet data' under the tab
Lighting. My checkbox is greyed out. I'm not able to select this
option.

Does anyone know if this is normal. The user manual and FAQ shows it
should be possible.

Thanks, Peter

The last message that I could find regarding these issues is from
Konstantinos on Dec 11, 2002, message #875.

It is probably not terribly important but I wonder how do desktop
versions relate to official source version releases nowadays? For
example, are latest betas based on 3.5 or 3.4, as indicated in
message 875?

Sorry if this was already discussed, Yahoo groups search feature
leaves a lot to be desired.

Hello every one,

Really I was wondering if any of you has information about the
Desktop Radiance open source code. I think the avaliable source code
(may be 3.5) works only under UNIX!! I don't know if it works under
Windows operating system as well or not?.

Thanks and regards

Radiance--not Desktop Radiance, just Radiance--will work under Cygwin,
which is a Unix emulation on Windows. You will have to deal with some
Unixisms to use it.

The Cygwin version is available from
<http://www.dream.unipa.it/dream/pub/dot/anselmo/radiance/03.php>. The
main Radiance site is <http://www.radiance-online.org/software/>.

Once you manage to set Cygwin up – and got used to the operating system, you can access all of functionality of Radiance – a steep learning curve but well worth it

I'm just starting to use desktop radiance. I have modeled a 3d building in Autocad and now I would like to add some new materials to the Library. My question is how can I input the transmission factor of materials? Because I think the material editor window only has the option of changing average reflectance, specularity and roughness.

I will appreciate any help since the selection of different materials' properties is the main part of my work.

sometime a dull image) while it is much better with luminance. Also,
do any one knows which exactly the advanced features (e.g.
using 'high' for rendering)which give elaborated and precise images
in less time.

"Luminance" is the light reflected from a surface; "illuminance" is the
light falling on a surface. Generally, luminance is what's used for
renderings and illuminance is used for measurements--for instance, of
light on a desktop in a plan view.

There's an art to setting the simulation parameters to produce good
images and accurate estimates of light levels--the parameters which do
the two jobs are different. Probably the best general answer to your
question is to refer to you *Rendering With Radiance*,
<http://radsite.lbl.gov/radiance/book/>, which is available via
print-on-demand. Specific answers depend a lot on your model.

Hello Julia,
For any opaque material, light is either absorbed or reflected. For
translucent materials (glazing), you should download and use Optics 5.

good luck

Our office recently 'upgraded' from AutoCAD 2000 to AutoCAD 2004. Great
news for the drafties, but terrible for Desktop Radiance users! I think
just yesterday I found my way around it, but it involves the use of
Ecotect.

Not wanting to learn a new 3d modelling package, I opted to stick with
geometry modelling in AutoCAD. To get the geometry out of AutoCAD, I
tried radout, torad, and exporting to 3ds and dxf. Torad and radout
didn't work, apparently they're not compatible with this version of
AutoCAD. Getting to radiance via 3ds and dxf did work, but with some
difficulty.

I tried dxf2rad as provided by Schorsch. This worked pretty well, but
two drawbacks. Firstly, it seems that my closed 2d polylines didn't
make it. Secondly, all geometry went into the one rad file.

I also tried importing the dxf into Ecotect. Again, the closed 2d
polylines didn't make it. And my layers disappeared, with all geometry
ending up on the one zone.

I also imported the 3ds into Ecotect. This time, all layers appeared
intact, and stay intact when exporting to Radiance. Except the closed
2d polylines which again didn't make it.

To make the closed 2d polyline appear for future models, I'll have to
model them in AutoCAD as 3dfaces or similar. Regions will probably work
too. Tested this out using 3dfaces, and these surfaces then appeared in
Ecotect following the same route.

So, the result is -
1. Model in AutoCAD as previously, but don't use closed 2d polylines.
2. Export from AutoCAD to 3ds.
3. Import the 3ds into Ecotect.
4. Apply materials and any necessary touch-ups in Ecotect.
5. Export to Radiance and run from the command line, or through Ecotect
if so inclined.

This is my result, given Ecotect. I haven't got an answer yet if you
don't have Ecotect (http://www.squ1.com/site.html).

Cheers,
Phil.

Alternatively, if you don't have Ecotect, you can use 3ds2mgf and then
mgf2rad. Precompiled versions of these programs are here:

http://www.dream.unipa.it/dream/pub/dot/anselmo/radiance/cygwin/radiance_cygwin_\
2003-10-01.tar.gz

I can't check it now because I use linux at home, but probably you will
need to install cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) to run them, since they
may need the cygwin dll (not very sure, maybe they work as they are ...)

Hope this helps ...

Thanks Francesco. I think those two programs, 3ds2mgf and mgf2rad, are
included in the Desktop Radiance distribution, so they can be used on
Windows without installing cygwin. Not sure about 3ds2mgf. I seem to
have got it from somewhere...

I haven't tried it, but I imagine that following that process will
produce one big scene file, rather than one file per material. This
could always be avoided by exporting individual 3ds files for each scene
component.

Phil.

Alternatively, if you don't have Ecotect, you can use 3ds2mgf and then
mgf2rad. Precompiled versions of these programs are here:

http://www.dream.unipa.it/dream/pub/dot/anselmo/radiance/cygwin/radiance
_cygwin_2003-10-01.tar.gz

I can't check it now because I use linux at home, but probably you will
need to install cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) to run them, since they
may need the cygwin dll (not very sure, maybe they work as they are ...)

Hope this helps ...

You should have a poll "How much would you be willing to contribute to
make Desktop Radiance a stand-alone application that imports files from
various CAD formats?"

I haven't used Desktop Radiance because every office I have worked in
has had either Microstation or AutoCAD LT (no 3D capability).

Personally, my dream application would be Lithonia's Visual Professional
CAD model interface, Cooper's Luxicon glazing and fixture library
interface (except Visual has better tools for placing and orienting the
fixtures), AGI32's objects library, and the Radiance rendering engine
for visualization.

I would be happy if you could just export the Visual model to another
super-simple application that allowed you to add finishes to the
surfaces and run Radiance. Unfortunately, Lithonia uses a proprietary
file format for the model database.

I'm impressed by Radiance's capability, but I don't do enough lighting
design to afford to spend thousands of dollars on a separate CAD program
so I can run Desktop Radiance.

Dear Paul and others,

I welcome your comments "outside the box" of this poll. There is
plenty of life left in Desktop Radiance and many of us can utilize
the benefits of Desktop Radiance if only it worked with the latest
version of AutoCAD. "LT" users are, unfortunately, not going to be
able to play this game because the intefaces for communicating with
outside s/w packages is absent.

I'm in contact with the original Desktop Radiance AutoCAD interface
developer (Jim Forester) and asking him what he would charge for an
upgrade to AutoCAD 2002, 2004 and 2005. I will serve as a monetary
conduit, users willing, for whatever degree of upgrade we can
afford. I will not charge any overhead or fee for this service and
the resulting executables will be made freely available.

I might re-phrase your question wrt stand-alone version of Desktop
Radiance in this way:

How much would you be willing to pay for a version of Desktop
Radiance that works with the open-source IntelliCAD software?

Preliminary results from our poll show:

With eight people responding, folks are willing to contribute
$1230.00 toward the uprgrade effort. This is a bit too early to
extrapolate to the entire group of 385 or so members, so if you can
all take a moment to view the "poll" section of the DesktopRadiance
Yahoo Group and let your opinion be heard.

I estimate that we'll need about ten times this much to get the job
done.

Thanks for your help,
-Chas

I currently don't own AutoCad. Any thoughts on an interface for other
software; Revit or Sketchup? Is Rayfront the alternative for non-AutoCAD
users?

Hi group,

I think Rayfront is not the best joice. It is a commercial software and you'll
not have a good support as we haven't answers for some qustions sent two months
ago.

I think you can make a try with BLENDER and a plug-in to export to RADIANCE.
Radiance Export Script (2.33a)

You'll have some thousands foruns to ask, read some tutorials all over the
world.

BLENDER is free. Multiplataform (OSx, Linux, Windows)

www.blender.org (blender download)

and more informations about the plug-in

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rayae1/tutorial.htm

Here in The Pos-Graduation of University of Brasilia, Brasil we are making some
simulations with BLENDER/Radiance Export Script (2.33a) we'll have news soon.

other External renderers for BLENDER

	 Yafray: Yet Another Free RAYtracer
Blender export script: YaBle
	 Virtualight
Blender export script included in package
	 POV-ray, MegaPOV
Blender export script: povanim
	 Lightflow
Blender export script: LFexport
	 Radiance
Blender export script: Radiance export

see you latter,

Nothing at all is what I would pay to have development for
compatibility with the latest AutoCAD version, but I would like
something else.

I think Paul Harouff made a good point about not AutoCAD-basing the
front end; but I would go further.

AutoDesk upgrades and product retirements are like falling leaves. The
last thing I want is a tie-in with any platform by AutoDesk, or for
that matter any other CAD vendor.

Thank you Mr Gates, Autodesk and the tie-in with AutoCAD 2000
(obsolete) for making my Desktop Radiance installation unusable, and
a new one impossible for me.

Surely the lesson is, let's not go down that route again.

Instead, could most of the features we already had in DR v 2.0 beta
be made available in mini-applications - untied from AutoCAD or any
other CAD platform?

As a casual user in the Windows-environment, only usually using
Radiance for daylighting calculations, I would like a set of simple
independent front-end tools that convert and manipulate files well,
allow easy use of all the features available to command-line experts,
produce output, and that's about all.

My wishes are biased by needing to get input from architectural
models over and over again into Radiance and do daylight renderings
and somehow get out calculations of average daylight levels in forms
I can put into reports.

My wish list:

- a new improved dxf-to-radiance file 3d geometry-and-materials
primitive conversion utility
- a dxf-to-materials file utility to extract the list of
materials used in the dxf file and generate a materials .rad file
from it
- mapping utilities to
o substitute one set of material names for another set of
material names in any geometry-and-materials file, based, say, on a
user-defined input table
o show the materials used in a materials file, and substitute
another set of materials, assigning materials from libraries /the
Radiance material libraries
- a sky scene front end for generating skies for repetitive
runs at different times of day/sky conditions
- an export dxf-viewpoint to-viewfile utility
- an export dxf-measuring-grid to rillum input file utility
- a measuring grids input/output file utility
- a simple rendering run front-end control panel (like Square
One / Rayfront) to select scene files, sky files, camera files and
the mode of output
- a few html Help files that help you to run the executables
from the command line in a DOS-box under Windows
