Hello,
I just heard of ECOTECT last week on this forum. I tried their web site
and read Andrew Marsh's letter and a read few other web sites about it
and it sounds very intriguing.

Since this is the first place I heard of it, I was wondering if anyone
here could tell me what they know about it?

I was also wondering if anyone here could let me know how to get it or
a trial version while their web site is down?

If this is an inappropriate post to this forum, I apologize! I didn't
know where else to go.

I have recently installed Desktop Radiance on my computer.  When I try to run Radiance, it correctly starts up my AutoCAD (actually the Architectural Desktop).  However, it appears that Desktop Radiance is not starting up at the same time.  As I began to follow the Tutorial and start a new drawing, the “Desktop Radiance Preferences dialog box” does not appear.  Nor do I see how to select the “Radiance MaterialsAttach”, which is the next step in the tutorial.

Did I miss something in the description?

For information, I am running the following:

Windows XP along with Novell networking

Autodesk Architectural Desktop 2005

Any advice or help is appreciated.

Desktop Radiance works only with AutoCAD2000 and R14.
The second problem is that it haven't been updated for a few years.
Maybe the solution is to sue other verisons of radiance which also work
on Windows.
Look at the site www.radiance-online.org On their mailing lists there is
currently the discussion about Radiance under Windows, and you also have
a links to the other Radiance sites.

Hi,
Yeah only works with autocad 2000 and R14 although R14 wont install on
computers using XP. I have it installed with Autocad 2000i and it works, as
autocad 2000 had alot of bugs in it.

Another radiance I have used is Radiance with a cygwyn window, you can just
run the executables. Useful if you already have a model set up in ecotect
for example. Although a better graphical interface like autocad makes it
better to use. And the cygwyn version takes a bit of know-how to set up and
run.

I appreciate the response.
I am currently checking if my insitution has an old copy of AutoCAD 2000
(or 2000i) around.
It is too bad that this was not maintained.
I had checked into the 'cygwyn' version, and it seemed to be a little
complex to getting set up.  Especially for myself who has very limited
Unix type experience, and my AutoCAD skills are very rusty (I worked with
it in the early to mid 1990's but not much since).

Currently I am modelling a space with wind tower, the wind tower
extends 3 meters above the roof of the space with openings from the
sides. The wid tower dimension is 2X2 meters.
I wanted to know what would be the best ambient bounces to use while
simulating it since the sensor is placed directly under the windtower.

hi guys, I'm using radiance on the newest version of ecotect (2006).  it was
working fine for the longest time, but I haven't used it for a while... now
it won't run!  waaah!  it started when I used a registry cleaner and I think
the files got messed up... then I fixed it, so it was ok for a while.  now
it doesn't work again.  it doesn't cooperate for the daylight factor grid
analysis.  any ideas?  I really need this for my dissertation!  please!!!

Good-day Everyone!
I have gone through Autodesk Revit 9 documentation and in their
Building Information Modelling(BIM) capabilities it is claimed that
the software is capable of lighting,energy usage and even 'what
ifs'scenario simulations.Please I am asking the Forum, is it really
true or is it one of those advertisement gimmicks? Please I am
interesred if any member has even tried to do any analysis with
Revit.If it is possible, is it based on the Radiance engine? Also has
the Revit 8 or 9 been valisated? I think for research validition is
extremely important.Thank you everyone and I hope this generates some
activity!

The current version of Revit incorporates AccuRender, which I don't
think is based on Radiance. If Autodesk provides any documentation of
AccuRender, I have not so far seen it. Eventually this component will
probably be replaced by Autodesk VIZ (formerly Lightscape) integration.

Hello,
I'm a new user attempting to use V 2.0 Beta of Desktop Radiance for
daylighting analysis and I've found simulation to be extremely
erratic. I managed to work through the tutorial without a problem.
However when beginning work on the CAD model I wanted to study, and
though I could attach materials and glazing, when I run the
simulation, the simulation claims that processing is 'finished' almost
as soon as it's begun. This model is a translated version of a
MAC-created FormZ model, which I at first thought might be the
problem. I've also attempted to run simulations on other 3D CAD
models, both files I have in my archives and on models I just
constructed. Most of the time the simulations will run, but the view
of the simulation seems to have little to do with the camera view I've
chosen and/or the perspective is incredibly long. I continually
receive error messages about the project file missing, but whether the
simulation runs or not seems unrelated. I'm running DR with AutoCad
2000 on a Windows 2000 Professional platform. Could my problems be
related to translating a file from a MAC based file, or is it
something inherent to the program?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I had similar problems, but found if I save the file under a new name
before attempting any simulations it works.

Also, I had "strange" simulations because I positioned the camera on
the ground (ie an elevation of zero).  Try setting the elevation of
the camera to 1 or 2m.

Hope this helps.  No guarantees though, as I am fairly new to this
game too.

Hello Everyone!
I have downloaded Cygwin(inclusive of the X11 packages) and everything
is running fine including startx.The problem I have is how to use
radiance using the GUI.Whenever I start any command like genbox or
such and key in the parameters and ask for a display with x11meta, I
get a flash of a white interface and then nothing.Please can anybody
help or direct me to tutorials specific to cygwin radiance? I have
tried Axel's tutorials, but to no avail!

The Radiance might be the optimal, while I also find the Adeline which
integrates the Radince. If the Adeline has the more powerful functions
than Radiance? the differences for the same daylight simulation?

I have checked the brochure of Adeline, but it can be intalled in the
WIN95 and WIN2000, if the WINXP can be suitable?

have it on Linux Machines, well I am using Windows OS, I really need
help in installing Desktop Radiance in my system as soon as possible
as I have to work on an assignment, well if someone could please help
me in giving detailed information on how to install it on my system,
it says that it works with AUTOCAD 2000, it is really hard to find
that version of AutoCAD now, however I do have AutoCAD 2004 but
whenever I try running on it, it doesnt show any Radiance Menu in
AutoCAD just as it says it should, apart from this, I read somewhere
that if I use CYGWIN, it will work, I tried doing that as well but
failed, maybe I did something wrong and now CYGWIN is installed in my
system and I cant get it out so that I could try the procedure again.
Right now I am in distress and really really really need a huge favor
from all of you, please help me with this. Please tell me if it works
with higher versions of AutoCAD and how. Other than that, if CYGWIN is
the option, then how to do that ...

Development for DR stopped around ACAD2000, so if you don't have it
and you can't find it, then you're pretty out of luck.

Have you heard of these folks?

Linux on a cdrom, runs on windows, enables you to run Radiance.
I have to admit that I haven't tried it myself, but I have seen the
developers' demonstrations and it looks very promising.  And, more
likely they will be able to help you if you run into problems.

Hi All,

I a new user of Radiance and I'm having quite a few problems. I am
inputting from ecotect into radiance via the export icon.

I follow the steps as instructed, i set my analysis grid and set the
export to "Grid Pt Analysis". The file is exported as a .pts file but
nothing is found inside the .dat file, hence when i try to import the
values back into ecotect, there is an error because there is no data.

Also, the files .oct and .amb files cannot be found when the
"calculating grid points" has been initialised. Hence the analysis is
exited.

The .rad, .rif, and .bat amd .pts files come out fine but the rest are
no where to be seen.
