hello all

I'm trying to modify photometric files, after have runned the first
simulation in DR. I've followed all steps described in the DR Manual,
but I've not in my system the application called IESROT90.
Anyone of you can send me it via e-mail, it has been in the DR or
Radiance directory (I think in c:\Radiance\bin).
Thank all of you.

P.S. I wrote that I'm trying to modify... cause I have a lot of error
messages when I run a new simulation... but this is another big
story..)

Hello all,

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say that I've gotten plane-jane renderings
to work with the 2.0 Beta version, but that if I attach any glazing to anything
in my model DR doesn't finish the rendering, or has an error, so that it won't
display an rendered image but will show that it's complete in the simulation
manager.

I don't know if this has anything to do with leaving out the 'optics 5' part on
the new Beta install, or my own ineptitude, or something being wrong with my
installation, or all three.

I've also had no problem making new textures with the texture wizard, but
haven't tried attaching bitmaps to anything yet, and I haven't tried to make a
new light source yet.

Would the people who are in charge of the Beta Testing prefer that I e-mail
directly, or should I continue posting to this message board?

Additionally, has anything been going on in the 'Open-source Radiance
Consortium' front? I'd love to volunteer to help out...

hello Folks,

Cat's out of the bag..

There is a new version of Deskrad install on the radsite webpage. A
handful of users have tested the install and it seems to work.
Here are the updates:
-The DAO error has gone away.
-The Optics5 component has been removed from the install (there is a
newer version available for download from window.lbl.gov page). Without
Optics5, the Deskrad 2.0 Beta install won't need to do restarts during
the installation.
-The installation directions have been updated (June 27th 2002) and
posted. Some people have complained that the PDF is corrupt, doesn't
open. I am not sure what to do about that because the file looks fine
from this end. Could it be that the version of Acrobat I used to create
the PDF is too old?

If you are heading over to the download page, please check these two things:
1. While saving the file, if it is called Deskrad20B.exe, CHANGE the
.exe to .zip before saving. If while saving the file you see that it
is called drad20b_zip.zip, then everything is OK. Just save as is.
2. Download the installation PDF file and verify that it is two pages
and dated June 27th 2002. These instructions supersede all previous
installation directions. If the PDF file does not open for you, then
please download it from here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/DesktopRadiance/files/

Regarding Jeffrey's question of whether to post bugs or questions to
this board or to deskrad directly..
You are all invited to post relevant Desktop Radiance/Radiance messages
to the board. If you still have problems with downloading/installing
(having followed the installation directions), then yes, please write to
deskrad@... so we can either try to fix the problem or make
the directions clearer.

Thanks everyone, for being so patient.

One more note. We have officially stopped sending out CD Roms for
Desktop Radiance (ironically due to popular demand). We just don't have
enough people, money, and time to fill all those requests.

thanks all.

judy

Greetings.

I have recently downloaded Desktop Radiance (release
1.02) to check if the software is adequate to our
needs. I'm trying to learn its usage doing the
Tutorial into AutoCAD 2000, and I'm meeting with a
"bug" of some sort when I attempt to run a simulation
(steps 43 and following in the tutorial).

The software samples the drawing, writes a few files,
and then jams on "write entity 0/1", while displaying
an "unhandled exception in deskrad.arx"...

I've tries redoing the tutorial (which, incidentally,
is somewhat different from what I actually obtain with
the software), but I get the same error.

Can any of you help me with this?

Many thanks.
Frederic.

Frederic,

The conversion of cylinders from AutoCad into Radiance 1.02 is not correct.
The tutorial has a cylinder in it. Maybe that's the problem. Try to remove
the cylinder and try again.

I have encountered the same problem and have tried to delete the
cylinder. This hasn't worked. There seems to be no fix or work around
available. If there is nothing that can be fixed then I will have to
use Conrad in order to use Radiance.

Have you tried Radout or dxf2rad?

  http://www.schorsch.com/download/radout/
  http://www.schorsch.com/download/dxf2rad/

Since you're starting from Autocad data, using Conrad looks
like taking the long way home...

Hi

Thanks

I'll try these out. Do you know the root of the problem with the
DeskRad.arx file? If I would use ConRad, I would do most of my
modeling in 3D Studio Viz in lieu of AutoCAD.

Yes. The root is that it contains bugs... ;)

Actually, Radout contains the original version of the code in DR
that does the geometry export. But they have chaged a lot inside,
so I am unable to tell what fixed should be applied where. I'm
not saying that Radout doesn't have bugs, but most likely it has
different ones. The last reports I got about Radout choking on
valid data have been a long time ago.

Marcus,

Yes, Georg is right: all software contains bugs.

Are you using the 2.0Beta? If memory serves correctly, the cylinder problem
was fixed long ago.

> Greetings, Peter

I've attempted removing the cylinder, but (as noted by somebody
else), no success. I've tried to fall back to ACAD 14, and
it "works", so I assume the problem is linked to ACAD 2000 and not my
PC configuration.

I wrote "works" since I'm encountering another problem... :-/

I've done a 3D representation of my building, and managed to run a
camera simulation flawlessly. The resolution was at 512x512, so I've
tried to change that into the advanced simulation settings, but it
didn't work. Since then, I'm having the following errors:

When attempting a camera simulation, even the first one that worked,
and with all the default values, I'm having a "cannot create skyfile,
error 32" error, followed by a "filed ulbdScenaria.SimModeString
can't be zero-length string" error. Any idea? I've tried to close and
restart DR/ACAD, but without improvement.

Also, I have yet to succeed doing a calculation grid simulation;
currently, I'm having a "stdbSceneFiles.Path" error, following by a
series of Simulation Manager errors (while trying to save the
simulation parameters it would seem)...

Am I alone in having those troubles? Is it because I have yet to find
how to properly use DR? Or is it simply because DR *is*
troublesome? :-)

If this helps, the PC is running Windows 2000 Professionnal, on an
office network, but ACAD and DR are local to the PC.

I'd like to solve those problems, as I quickly need to perform some
daylight preliminary calculations, and I can't find another software
that is as easy to use while allowing me to model complex geometries.

Thanks in advance of any help.

Hello all

Well, I've installed succesfully DR beta 2, and I've started
immediatly to understand in the manual how to create new
luminaries...I've experienced a lot of problem, cause the procedure
on the manual is not the same in the program (step by step).
I've done all attachments, but I've not clear in my mind what
IMPOSTER GEOMETRY is, and how (or better, where) I have to model it.
I think I make some mistake when I try to synchronize the project.

When I finally reached wihtout warnings the task in which I choose
or edit the manufacture, I passed 3 or 4 hours to understand that if
I write the name of the new luminarie with blank spaces (like a
description), clicking next a warning appear telling "getbox is not
able to open the output file".

when finally I've made it, I've discovered that something was
wrong...(the orientation was on the back, not in front of the
luminarie).
So I've created a new one and finally it seems work, but when I run
a new simulation, rpict warning me

aiming failure for light source "78945.deco_flood_..."

rpict continue to run, when finished pflit starts and saves a pic
file...but the image shows clearly that something on photometric
data did not work properly

I wonder if maybe my iesna file does not match with units or so on...

If anyone of you have time to test it and someone made it, please
write me the correct procedure, cause I have a lot of luminaries to
edit correctly to place in my projects, and without them I cannot
work.

I can send or post all files about my test, but I think it would be
better learn how to edit new luminaries correctly, instead of
manipulate my test files.

All kind of help is welcome.

Thanks All

Hi!

I am a new user of Desktop Radiant.
I tried to follow instructions that given in
Quick-start Tutorial section.
Can anybody give me a better explanation about how to
define a zone? Is it
necessary to define zone to be able to render later
on?

I did skip defining a zone and set up a camera. After
the camera was saved
as current view, I tried to render the room by
following instructions that
given in "Starting a rendering" of Quick-start
Tutorial. I selected camera,
then selected all objects. After I hit enter, I got
this window with this
message:

"Exception in C:\Program Flies\Desktop
Radiance\deskrad.arx ARX Command"
"Unhandled Exception C0000005 (Access Violation
Writing 0x669b90a4) at
address 669AEC7Eh"

Can anybody explain to me what did I do wrong or what
I didn't do?

Thank you,
Pomme

May I ask which version of AutoCAD are you running. I will assume
that you are running either version 2000, 2000i or 2002.

I use AutoCAD 2000.
Are there any problems between AutoCAD 2000 and Desktop Radiance?

Hi

Yes, there seems to be a problem with AutoCAD 2000 and DR. It seems
that the DeskRad.arx doesn't like the geometery of AutoCad 2000.
Someone in a previous post gave me a link to a work around for this
problem. I'll try it out and tell you how it works.

Hello,

I'm also interested in this answer. I've trying to use DR with AutoCad 2000 and
it didn't work. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi

The problem that is being encountered I think is with the exporting
of the AutoCAD 2000 file to the native Radiance .rad file format.
Someone earlier gave me this link to export the files:

http://www.schorsch.com/download/radout/
http://www.schorsch.com/download/dxf2rad/

Although the export went sucessful, I have yet to find out how to
associate the export with a simulation. This does though seem like a
good work around until there is a permanent fix to the probem with
the DeskRad.arx file and AutoCAD 2000.

Marcus, Cláudia, et al.,

I've been able to confirm that, yes, this is a bug in the currently
available beta. I'll try to determine if it is in deskrad.arx or not, and
if so will try to fix it as time permits.

For those that are interested, Desktop Radiance works fine for me using ADT
3.3, which is based on AutoCAD 2002, running under Windows 2000. For those
that have had problems with AutoCAD 2002 using the 1.02 build, you may want
to consider trying out the 2.0 beta!

I have recently put DRAD V2.0 onto my machine with Windows NT and ACAD 2002
/ ADT 3.3. The first simulations I ran were the two samples provided with
the download, Quickstart and Ronchamps. For whatever reason the quickstart
model did not run but the Ronchamps model ran fine in both simulation and
full mode.

I eventually got the quickstart model to work by deleting various walls /
floors but it seemed a random process. On one occasion deleting two walls
and a floor started the simulation successfully, on other occasion deleting
the cylinder and one wall started the simulation. My next move when I find
time is to build the quickstart model from scratch to check if DRAD V2.0
runs. I feel it may be the import process that is perhaps causing some loss
or confusion with the additional DRAD data. Does anybody know if it is
possible to tell ACAD 2002 to load an ACAD R14 drawing format. Seems a
strange one as it does this automatically but I thought it was worth asking.

Regards

Andrew

Andrew,
yes, you can save a drawing in AutoCAd 2000 in format Autocad 14. Does anybody
can answer me if Desktop Radiance can work with Autocad 14?

Hi Claudia

DRAD V1.02 and DRAD V2 both work with AutoCAD R14.

My own question was if you could specifically load a drawing in ACAD 2002 as
a ACAD R14 drawing.

Many thanks

Andrew

Andrew,
yes, you can save a drawing in AutoCAd 2000 in format Autocad 14. Does
anybody
can answer me if Desktop Radiance can work with Autocad 14?

Cláudia

Andrew,

AutoCAD automatically converts older .dwg's into the current version. So,
an R14 drawing will be converted by 2002 at load into 2002 format. This
ensures compatibility with code written for that platform, including
extension .arx dll's. Of course, you can always SAVEAS and select R14 as
the format, but entities will not necessarily be round-tripped to their
original type. To preserve your original R14 entities, you'll have to
create a backup copy of the R14 .dwg file.

Hope this answers your question!

Dear all you out there, who succesfully installed the 2.0 beta version.

I'm still struggling even to download the file properly. It's says on the
web page the file suppose to be 72 MB large, but when I actually download,
it is always shows it to be only 62MB big. Trying to open the file after the
completed download results in a short flick of a DOS box and that's it !

I'll feel kind of hopeless...please help !

Dear Jochen,

The size of the downloaded file seems to be in order. You have the same
problem as me. You need to unzip the file with Winzip. That worked fine for
me.

Good luck.

hi Jochen,

Please also download the installation directions.

Here's a bit of background on the errors you received.
Files that have to do with Desktop Radiance, such as help manuals,
documents, actual download file, those are located on our group's
local machine,
http://radsite.lbl.gov/

Files (webpages) that have to do with registering, licensing, and
actual downloading, those are located on our DEPARTMENT's server,
http://racoon.lbl.gov/ (previously http://eetd.lbl.gov)

So why does that matter? Well, I don't have access to the department
server for making changes to the webpages. I only have access to
radsite. When you first visit the Desktop Radiance page you are on
radsite. Then as you are registering and downloading you are on
racoon. Finally, as you click on the download file link to save to
your computer racoon pops up the filename of the file that is
residing on radsite for you to save. When you see that the download
file should be X MB and after you download it is only Y MB, that is
because I did not have access to the webpage to change the X to Y.
And same problem with the actual file you downloaded. The text
should read .ZIP, but I could not make the webpage reflect that
change.
This leaves the burden of making the name change from .EXE to .ZIP to
the user who is downloading.
If you already have the download on your computer, changing it to a
.zip should be all you have to do.

We're working on getting all of the pages relating to Desktop
Radiance moved onto our own group computer, but that may not happen
for awhile.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Simply renaming the file to a zip worked - easy if you know it !!

Cheers Jochen

Dear all

For modeling of a double-glazing window with the Venetian blinds,
what's the widely accepted, average optical properties (reflectivity,
transmittance, specularity) of the PVC blinds ?

For example, in modeling of a office building, we generally use about 80%,
50%, 30% reflectivity for ceiling, wall, and floor, respectively.

Best Regards

CHEOL-SOO PARK
