Spunky And The "Apple a Day Dog Treat" Dog Food Recipe
by Bonnie Davis

My dog, Spunky, was put on a new diet last fall by our veterinarian who sold us
the food. After five days Spunky became very ill. He was vomiting, eating less,
became listless and staggered when he tried to walk. His veterinarian refused to
admit that the new food was causing his illness. Spunky became so ill that he
was hospitalized for five days and came to the point where we were told he was
dying.

I insisted that we try to feed him some of his old food before we gave up on
him. We visited the animal hospital and fed him small amounts of his old food.
Within hours his bloodwork was back to normal and he recovered very quickly.
Some damage to his liver, kidneys and gallbladder remained but these are
problems that can be monitored. In my anger and despair I decided to publish an
all natural cookbook of dog food recipes. Several months later the very food
that made Spunky ill was added to the recall list and this only served to make
me more aware that pet owners need to consider feeding their pets human grade
food.

An Apple A Day Dog Treat

2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup unbleached flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 apple, chopped or grated
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
3/8 cup water

Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray cookie sheet with vegetable oil spray. Lightly
dust work surface with flour. Blend flours and cornmeal in large mixing bowl.
Add apple, egg, oil, brown sugar and water. Mix until well blended. On work
surface, roll dough out to 7/8-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters of
desired shape and size.

Place treats on prepared sheet. Bake in preheated oven 35 to 40 minutes. Turn
off oven. Leave door closed for 1 hour to make the treats crispy. Remove treats
from oven. Store baked treats in airtight container or plastic bag, and place in
refrigerator or freezer.

Recipe makes 24 servings.

Pet owners who love their pets will no doubt be searching for new food sources.
Remember that when changing your dog's diet (no matter what the food source)
that you need to introduce the new food carefully and in small amounts before
actually making the switch. If you have any concerns about allergies and food
sensitivity please consult your veterinarian before introducing human grade
food.

If you think that artistic fame comes only to those who are
blessed from the start, then you're normal. I shared this view
until recently. You might harbour lofty goals in your heart, but
sticking to them with persistence takes a heap of a lot of
faith.

It's more than okay to have lofty goals and intentions. Nothing
wrong with being motivated by what you love either. So, why does
actually working towards your dream seem too much of a stretch?
Many artists assume that they need to anticipate what people
want, and make art that attracts and pleases people.

Recently, I heard an artist saying that every time she paints a
sunset, it sells almost immediately. In her experience, that's
what people want. The moment I heard that sunsets sell really
well, a story my husband told me years ago, sprang to mind.

Bill had a college friend, 55 years ago in Southern California,
who was an art student. This friend, Jack, made a lasting
impression on Bill because of his persistent devotion and just
plain street smarts.

Jack made "pot boilers", as he called them - paintings sold out
of the back of his old van. Jack would pin a line of blanks on a
line. Then he'd go down the line, painting in all the horizons,
then the sunsets, then the water, then the sailboats, and so on.

What a slick entrepreneur, huh? That's what I thought too. These
pot boilers sold quick and cheap right off the street. They kept
him in supplies so he could do his "real work" and continue
taking classes at Scripps College, Claremont.

Jack paid his way through college by painting signs on grocery
store windows. "Bread 14 cents". He'd clean his brushes by
wiping them on a spare tire in the back of his van. One day,
someone wanted to buy this tire with all its colourful brush
wipes, so he sold it! He seemed to attract fame from the start.

I always wondered what ever became of the audacious Jack. Was he
just a phoney street entrepreneur? After all these years, I
decided to look him up. I googled Jack Zajac recently. And what a
surprise!

It's true, that he studied sculpture in Rome on several
prestigious scholarships, and is still a very successful,
internationally respected artist. At 78, his work sculptures are
shown in many world-renown galleries.

He made no pretensions about his sunsets being his life's work.
Jack never fashioned his real work on what he guessed would
please people. From reading his biography, he always had very
firm views on what his goals were.

Jack Zajac may have broken all the rules. . . except one. The
most important one. He knew his calling and followed it, whatever
that took. He instinctively knew that his heart's calling was
always true.

We won't all have such international acclaim and success as a
Jack Zajac. Nor do we all have such single-minded devotion.
Still, true stories in our time like Jack's are inspiring. They
show us what's possible given the goal and intentions, the faith
and persistence.

We all have at least one true heart's calling for doing what we
do. Once you find it, there is no doubt. You'll know it without
guessing. Not a long shot or daring, hunch or gut feeling, your
true heart's calling has always been quietly there, waiting for
you to join it.

Whatever your true heart's calling may be, have you ever longed
to dance out of line; to break the usual rules and see where the
call leads you? You don't have to be stopped by the humble
nature of your calling either. If you're a dish washer, be the
best darned dish washer you can be!

Next to hearing your true calling, taking sovereignty of it,
making a commitment, living your clear intention are the most
difficult. The neat thing about art is, you can practice it at
any age. True devotion is fraught with pitfalls and not for the
faint of heart. But so is life.

"What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"
Mary Oliver, poet Here's wishing you the courage to take flight
and soar.

'Getting Real'

http://www.heartsongstudio.com

"What is REAL?" asked the Velveteen Rabbit one day, when they
were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came
to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside
you and a stick out handle?"

There is a hugely crippling concept of art lurking about that art
is either realistic or abstract. This red herring divides two
camps in mutual distrust, and diverts a heck of a lot of creative
energy away from where it wants to go.

If a picture of a flower is realistic, then it's fake isn't it?
Everybody knows it's paint on canvas, or similar. Everybody
knows it's two dimensional posing as three. Then, if the purpose
is to "look just like a flower", what's it for? Is it to make
the artist feel she has "created" a flower, like God? Is it to
cause viewers to say: "Oh, you've captured the flower," like
capturing a giraffe for the zoo?

The original definition of abstract art was that it must not
represent anything natural; no organic forms. Even so, an
abstract painting does represent something. If it has a title or
not, it was produced from the hand and heart of an artist, who
chose the colours, the composition, the feeling inherent in the
work. It represents a subject important enough to the artist that
he made it, and couldn't help but transmit his inner meanings
into the paint.

Even elephants make paintings. . . that sell! Are they abstract
or realistic?

*** "Real isn't how you're made," said the Skin Horse.
"It's something that happens to you. When a child loves you for
a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you,
then you become Real."

Effective abstracts aren't so much abstract as original. A
couple of artist friends have told me in a private moment, that
they only paint abstracts because they can't draw anything that
looks real. Yet some of their "abstracts" do conjure up realistic
things, evoke real feelings.

Effective realistic work expresses profound and real meanings
too. Some artists paint realistic works that don't look at all
real, because their purposes are shallow. Look at the finest
realistic art, by a grand master, and you'll see there's a lot
of abstraction there. They are two dimensional canvases
suggesting a four dimensional subject --- height + width + depth
+ time. A Cezanne apple is not a real apple, but a grand
abstraction.

All art is abstract.
All art is realistic.

Whether a work is made in its visual exactness or its symbolic
equivalent, it involves an elaborate sequence of operations to
manifest --- conception, incubating, hatching, nurturing, taking
flight.

Realistic art doesn't begin with an object, say a tree. It
begins with an artist's fascination with a tree. Its goal is not
to recreate the tree, but to portray a concept, perhaps
fascination, or a symbolic gesture, with tree as the metaphor.
The things that move people have no single physical embodiment,
but they impart to physical things the qualities of meaning that
move us.

*** "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Somethimes," said the
Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are REAL you
don't mind being hurt."

Sometimes the discovery of what happens to us as we encounter the
world can be painful. Yet, it is the active searching for what
things do mean to us that gives any art that deserves a second
glance its fresh, newborn look. Whether figuratively or
abstractly portrayed, art shows the act of a person just
uncovering something of great personal importance.

Want to give it a try yourself? Take out something you've made
earlier, and instead of looking to see how materially realistic
(or not) the images are, see it from your heart. Remain curious
and focus on any unresolved area, which you don't understand.
Let your eyes go "soft focus" without trying to understand it.
Does it remind you of anything in your life, either pleasant or
uncomfortable? Something was transmitted, by you, that wants to
be recognized.

Sometimes this can sting. "Mistakes" are only deemed so by your
consent. Bothersome passages could also be seen as blessings in
disguise. (The French word for "wound" is "blesser".)
Discovering something unexpected, revealing an emotionally
charged issue, can be like tearing off a bandaid to reveal an old
wound to the air --- surprising, yet necessary for full healing.
If you can't feel it, how will you know when it has healed?

*** "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he
asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once,"
said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's
why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have
sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the
time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your
eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby.
But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real
you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Let's expose our old wounds to the light of day, when we're
ready, over and over again, until they are healed. Let us
redirect the energy spent on categorizing ourselves. Using art as
a healing process, we are seeking the light, greater clarity,
expanding our consciousness, growing deeper into new meanings of
our presence in the world. Let's take the risk of "getting
real", more authentically us. Any shabbiness we develop along
the way is just beautiful badges of experience, uniquely ours.

Have you seen the film "Babel"? There are long scenes where
only Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, or English are spoken, with no
translation at all. The amazing thing is, you understand
everything that's being said!

How can this make sense, when I barely know a word of Arabic,
Japanese or Spanish?

The same thing is getting through to you when you are powerfully
attracted to a work of art. Apart from the usual ways of
"reading" a painting or sculpture, there is a certain something
that is communicated to your heart.

In the movie, body language and facial expression played a large
role, as well as the actor's tone of voice. Yet many of the
roles played in Arabic, were by non-actors.

How did they communicate to us?

They actually lived the emotions in the roles.

Just like in your art work, composition, nuance and tone play a
part. Yet if you feel little emotion, that's what will be
communicated. Create any work of art and your state of heart will
show, whether you intend it or not. A certain something gets
"spoken" from the heart of the artist, and "heard" in the
hearts of the viewers.

You may not even be aware that emotion is there by your own hand.
Whatever your feelings for your subject, these will be
communicated to your viewers without fail. There are no wiggly
lines in the air, but like gravity, it is unmistakable.

This is why a school assignment, no matter how well done, is
seldom if ever effective in moving you.

You can try this experiment yourself.

Find a partner, and have a large sheet of paper to share, crayons
or coloured pastels. You are going to have a visual conversation.
One of you starts with an "opening remark".

There's no talking, no drawing symbols, no hearts, no arrows, no
stars, no lightening bolts, words, or numbers. How will you
"talk"? You will invent the visual language as you take turns.

You'll need to watch carefully with your heart as your partner
works. When done, it's your turn and so on until the
conversation feels complete. Usually doesn't take longer than 15
minutes. Then you can talk!

  * Did you stay on your side of the paper, or did your marks
touch?
  * Did you take a leading role or follow her lead?
  * How did it feel to be seen / not to be seen?
  * What did you talk about?

Each time you do this exercise, it's completely different. And
you always understand, on some level, what's being "said".

The point is to experience how powerful yet subtle communication
takes place quite apart from the usually accepted forms. You can
be sure that whenever you make a work of art, the feelings in
your heart get through. By knowing this, you can make your work
more effective.

Get really clear in your heart from the start how you feel about
your subject of choice. Keep checking in to see how this changes
as you go. Then watch as viewers warm to your hidden messages.

Choose A Wedding Florist Who Can Bring Your Personality To The Wedding
Copyright (c) 2007 Wesley Berry, AAF
Wesley Berry Flowers

When Sandra Bullock married Jesse James (of Monster Garage fame),
guests like William Shatner, Regina King, Jason Biggs and Jamie
Lee Curtis saw her carry a wedding bouquet of red roses that had
been bound together by a leather strap.

The bouquet that Sandra Bullock carried for her wedding reflected
love and toughness at the same time – a reflection that mirrored
the relationship that she and Jesse James share.

When you get married, it is important to choose a wedding florist
who can bring your personalities to your wedding. Therefore, it
is important to interview a number of florists to find the one
who is right for you.

After all, for most weddings, you won't just be ordering a
bridal bouquet. In addition, you will also want to consider or
order:

  * a bouquet for the bouquet toss if you do not think that you
will want to part with the bouquet that you carried down the
aisle;
  * a bouquet for the maid of honor;
  * bouquets for the bridesmaids;
  * a boutonničre for the groom;
  * boutonničres for the best man and other groomsmen;
  * a corsage for the mother of the bride;
  * a corsage for the mother of the groom;
  * boutonničres for the fathers of the bride and groom;
  * flowers to decorate the altar and line the aisle; and,
  * flowers for decorating the reception hall

Not every bride and groom will choose to order all of flowers in
that list. For some, a simple bouquet for the bride is all that
they will order. Choosing where you will use flowers in your
wedding ceremony, therefore, is important even before you hire a
florist to provide your wedding flowers.

Once you have chosen where you will use flowers, you can begin
interviewing to find a wedding florist. You'll want to find
someone who will not pressure you into buying wedding flowers
that you do not want to have. Similarly, you will want to find a
wedding florist who can work with you to choose the right flowers
for your wedding – flowers that reflect your personality.

For example, if you do not like roses, you should avoid working
with wedding florist who insists that a wedding just isn't a
wedding without roses. If you want to have your bridal bouquet
and other flowers for your wedding capture your love of natural
beauty with wildflowers, it is important to hire a wedding
florist who will respect that wish and work with you to ensure
that the flowers at your wedding reflect you.

When it comes to choosing a wedding florist who will work with
you, however, there are more points to consider than just whether
or not he or she can provide the flowers that fit your
personality. In addition, you want to be sure that a wedding
florist is selling you the flowers that you want at a reasonable
price that you can afford.

Be sure to ask the wedding florists that you interview about
pricing concerns – both for the flowers themselves and for
delivery. Also ask about their experience, work that they have
done in the past and even whether or not they've provided
arrangements for other weddings at the same location as yours.

By taking the time to ask questions, you can be sure to find the
right wedding florist for you – one who will give you the best
price and the service that you are looking for; one who will
listen to you and work with you to bring your personality into
your wedding ceremony.

Not everyone wants to carry red roses gathered with a leather
strap the way Sandra Bullock did – but keep in mind, it worked
for her, in part because she chose to work with a wedding florist
who kept her desires in mind during the process of selecting a
wedding flowers.

5 Easy Ways To Decorate With Sheets
Copyright (c) 2007 Julie Lohmeier
My Home Redux
http://www.myhomeredux.com/

Want a custom, coordinated look that is inexpensive? Use
bedsheets. Yep, the same sheets you cuddle under at night can
turn a bedroom from boring to stunning. A designer look at
Walmart prices.

To coordinate with your bed, just buy extra sheet sets. Use them
to make pillows, drapes, dust ruffles, round table covers and
more.

Pillows

Buy pillow forms at any sewing or craft store. Measure the
dimensions. Cut two pieces from your sheets with these
dimensions. Sew seams around the sides (or use Stitch Witchery(r)
and a hot iron), remembering to sew with right sides together.
Leave half of one side for a square or rectangle pillow or 1/6 of
the circumference of a round pillow open. Turn inside out. Stuff
your pillow form into the pillow casing. Stitch the opening
closed by hand.

For extra pizzazz, use piping, trims, or beads in the seam.

Curtains

Swags are the easiest to make. Simply cut one width of the sheet
about 24" – 48" tall - depending on how much fullness you want –
whatever is left to hang on the sides will have to do. Hem both
top and bottom by rolling 1", folding in half, and stitching near
the second fold.

If you have wide window or you wish to have the swag fall further
down the side of the window, you'll need to do a bit more work,
but it's still fairly easy. Measure your window width. Determine
how long you want the swag to hang down the sides, then double
this measurement. Add it to your width measurement. Add another
6" -12" to allow soft draping across the top. Measure the width
of your sheet. Compare it to the measurements you made previously
of your window. If your sheet is 54" wide but you want a swag
that's 100" wide, you'll need to essentially cut two widths.
Cut any extra widths as needed. The key for swags, if you need
more than one width, is that you don't want a seam in the
center. Instead, you'll want the full width of the window in one
piece, then seam together the side pieces at the ends of this
center piece. When you piece together patterns, try to match up
the patterns between pieces. This may mean you need to cut your
widths at different points across the sheet.

Hang the swag over a pole or in swag holders.

You can also sew a valance and panels. A gathered valance is
easy. Measure your window width. You'll want to cut widths from
your sheet that is 50% to 100% wider than the window, seam
together, matching patterns. So if your window is 40", you'll
want your curtain to be 60" – 80" wide. You can sew together as
many widths as you need as long as you match your pattern. Decide
the height of the valance. 15" -18" is standard so make the
height that you cut from the sheet 40" – 44". If you want a small
ruffle above the valance add 2" - 4" to the total above. Sew
multiple widths together, right sides facing each other. Sew the
top and bottom ends together with right sides facing each other.
Turn inside out and straighten. From the top seam, line pins 1" –
2" down from the top. Stitch along this line to create your
ruffle. Then measure down 3-1/2" and mark with pins. Stitch along
this line to create your rod pocket. Put your curtain on the rod
and hang.

Panels are done much the same way. Measure the length you want
the panel to hang. Add 4-1/2" to the length. Add an additional 2"
– 4" if you want a ruffle at the top. Cut this length out of the
LONG part of your sheet. You'll probably want two panels.
You'll need each panel to be 50-100% more than half of the
window width. That means that two panels together will also be
50-100% of your window width. You may be able to cut two panels
from one sheet or you may need two sheets.

Ideally, you would make a full 3" hem (add 4" extra inches to
your length measurement above if you do this hem), but for
simplicity just make a simple shirt-tail hem at the bottom by
marking 1" off the bottom. Then turn half of this under. Stitch
near the top of rolled over fabric. On the top, fold down 4-1/2"
from the top (5-1/2" to 6-1/2" if you want a ruffle). Of this
folded over fabric, turn 1" under. Stitch near the bottom where
you folded the extra material underneath. From the very top of
the panel, measure 1" – 2" (based on the size ruffle you wanted)
and line pins. Stitch along this line to create your ruffle and
your rod pocket. Put your panels on the rod.

Dust Ruffle

Take a plain sheet and lay it over your box springs. Mark around
it ˝" to 1" (5/8" is the standard seam width) bigger than the box
springs on all four sides. Cut this out and make a shirt tail hem
along one short side. Cut 9" tall widths from your sheet (you'll
need the height of your bed plus 1" if your bed is higher than
standard). You'll need enough widths to go around two long sides
and one short sides of the box springs cover you just cut. Stitch
these widths together with rights sides facing each other. It is
best to gather these widths onto to the box springs cover. To do
so, you'll want your total width of the cut sheet lengths to be
25% longer than the total measurements of the two long sides and
one short side. Make a shirt-tail hem rolling up 1" from the
bottom of each sheet length, turning it under at 1/2" and then
stitching near the end of the fold. Pin the cut sheet lengths to
the box springs cover, gathering as you go. Again, you'll want
right sides of the fabric together as you sew. Flip over when
done. Place on the bed. The short side with no dust ruffle goes
against the head of the bed.

Round table cover

Make a circle wide enough to cover the table down to the floor.
Measure from the floor on one side of the table, across the
center of the table to floor on the other side. Add 2". This is
your diameter. Make a circle with this diameter. Make a
shirt-tail hem rolling 1" from the edge in half and then sewing
down near the fold. Voila. You're done.

Shades

You can also make matching blinds using sheets, fusible
interfacing, and Stitch Witchery(r) - no sewing. Buy a shade the
proper width for your window. Cut the fusible interfacing the
same width shade. For length make it the height of the window
plus 10-12 inches. Measure and cut your fabric to be 1-1/4 inch
wider than the fusible interfacing. Center the fabric over the
interfacing and iron according to the directions. Turn under the
ends on both side and iron down with Stitch Witchery(r). Fold up
2 inches from the bottom for your shade pull and affix with
Stitch Witchery(r). Remove the original shade and staple your new
designer shade to cardboard pole. Be sure to hang on the proper
side so that when you put it up the right side is showing. Hang
your shade on the shade hardware.

These directions may seem harder than they actually are, but with
an hour or two and some matching and coordinating sheets, you can
decorate an entire bedroom.

Views You Can Use - About... Infant Seats, Car Seats, and Other Carriers

Q. I have heard that overuse and misuse of infant seats and other
carriers might have a relationship to future problems of ADD/ADHD
and obesity. Is there any truth to that?

A. While there are no studies as yet that indicate a direct
relationship, there is information that suggests care should be
taken not to overuse or misuse infant seats, car seats, and other
carriers.

Human beings are mobile creatures. They are meant to be on the
move much of the time. The younger the child is the more there
should be movement. Babies and toddlers should be free to move as
much as possible. Infant seats, car seats, and other carriers are
designed to help parents for those times when they cannot either
carry their children or watch them carefully as they move around,
crawl, or walk. These devices were not meant to be used as much
as they are today. The more babies and young children are
transported, the less they are engaged in hands-on, exploratory,
and exercise activities. These are the kinds of interactions that
foster both the ability to focus and the opportunity to burn
calories and maintain a proper weight.

Infant Seats

A mother cannot hug, hold, and caress her baby, toddler, or young
child too much. This kind of touching is a relationship-building
and bonding activity. Interestingly enough, a mother's arms
increase in strength at the exact same rate as her baby's growth
in weight. That is why a grandparent, relative, or friend might
find a baby too heavy to carry when a mother easily totes her
child from place to place.

INSIGHT... An infant seat is that perfect place for a baby when a
parent cannot either hold his/her baby or find a safe place to
put him/her down.

Many parents keep a baby in some kind of seat for long hours at a
time. Babies, like all other human beings, thrive on individual
attention and personal interactions. These experiences early on
contribute to a child's ability to focus and learn. They are
necessary for normal development. Moving, right from the start,
is also what helps a baby, toddler, and young child gain their
needed muscle strength to accomplish each milestone of
development starting with holding up his/her head, pushing up,
rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and walking.

Infant Seats with Bells and Whistles

There are specials seats with hanging toys, vibrators, and music
that aid in the soothing process. There are also other convenient
designs that convert car seats to infant seats for parent
convenience. In addition, high chairs and swings have their place
too. Upon seeing such a variety of appealing mechanisms, it is
easy to think that seats should take the place of soft blankets
and rugs, vibrations should replace natural rocking, and that
music should override natural singing. However, this is not the
case. Mom should be careful not to take her baby from one kind of
seat to another without interacting with him/her and therefore
creating an almost seamless "no-hold-your-baby" process.

While infant seats, car seats, and other baby carriers are
helpful, it is important to be aware of the importance of every
minute. Read, sing, talk, and play freely with your baby as much
as you can. No matter what age your child is, creating hands-on
personal interactions and the opportunity for movement will
always be beneficial.

Tips for getting your school-year off to a relaxed and productive
start. This action plan will guide you through a step-by-step
approach for beginning a successful school year on the
home-front.

Gearing up for back-to-school can be a bit overwhelming; there is
a lot to do, a lot of transitions to navigate, and often a sense
of blues as the realization that summer has, once again, gone by
too fast. However, you can easily turn back-to-school anxieties
into positive anticipation for a great school year with the
following action plan. Plug these steps into your calendar right
now and see what a different they can make!

One Week before School: Week of Preparation

Day 1 (seven days before school): Ease into a "school" bed-time
schedule. Slowly transitioning into a "school" sleep schedule
ensures proper rest and encourages a positive attitude towards
going back to school.

Day 3: Create a place for everything, so everything will be in
its place. Designate one basket for each child to store his
shoes, bookbags, and jackets. Give each child a container filled
with standard homework supplies that can be transported from, for
example, the kitchen to the computer room. Finally, establish a
place for each child to store extra papers from school -a section
of your file cabinet or a designated box under his bed.

Day 4: Purchase supplies. Keep the supplies minimal and
simple. Fancy folders and notebooks are bulky and hard for
students to use. The best system to use is a one-inch binder
with a plastic folder for each class, keeping all folders in one
place.

Day 6: Set goals with your children. Help your children look
forward to the new school year by having each person (including
you) share at least two goals for the new school year: one
academic goal and one "fun" goal.

First Week of School: Week of Routines

Day 7 (night before school): Have a "Sunday Night Meeting" every
week! Each member of the family should grab their
planners/calendars for a 10-15 minute "meeting." Ask your
children what they have scheduled for the week (such as sports
practices), share your plans for the week (children like to know
what to expect, so tell them if you will have a late night at the
office or will have to attend a meeting at school), arrange rides
home from after-school activities, etc. Your week will be much
less chaotic because everyone will be on the same page!

Day 8: Establish a routine for papers that need your attention.
Purchase magnetic clips for each child and post them on the
refrigerator. Have your children clip papers here that you need
to fill out, sign, etc. (Expect to spend four hours filling out
back-to-school papers this week.)

Day 10: Get ready for school at night, before you go to bed.
Avoid chaotic mornings and forgotten school supplies by having
everyone pack up their homework, bookbags, lunch/lunch money,
etc. before they go to bed. They should also set out their
clothes, shoes, and jacket at night, too. (Get the FREE 'Night
Before School' Tool at:
http://www.soarstudyskills.com/morefreestuff.htm

Day 11: Is everyone using their school planners? All students
need to use a homework planner! Check planners every night until
they are part of everyone's routine.

Day 12: Clean out bookbags once a week. Cluttered book-bags are
the root cause of lost assignments and must be cleaned out
regularly. (The Sunday Night Meeting is another good time to do
this.)

Second Week of School: Week of Cooperation

Day 14: Hold your second "Sunday Night Meeting" of the school
year.

Day 15: Give each child a choice about something today. The
more you can give your children choices, the more cooperation you
will get from them, especially when doing homework. Some choices
may include giving two options for dinner or two different times
to do their homework. When you give choices –and honor their
choices- your children feel empowered and will be much more
cooperative.

Day 18: Catch your children being good today! Improve
cooperation by giving compliments to your children. Keep them
specific and succinct (most children are embarrassed by
mushy-gushy compliments). For example, "Thank you, Kristen, for
coming home and starting your homework right away. I appreciate
that." Positive praise works wonders!

Day 21: Give yourself a break! Congratulations, you have
survived the first two weeks of school and you are well on your
way to a happy, productive school year. Celebrate by scheduling
some time for yourself. You deserve it!

Job Etiquette Rules – How Many Do You Know?
Copyright (c) 2006-2007 Kent Jacobson a.k.a. Mr. Success
Shortcut 2 Success
http://www.Shortcut2Success.com

There are 10 basic rules of job etiquette you need to follow when
you begin a new job or transfer to a new organization within your
company. Above all, you must be prepared to meet and greet a
number of people ranging from top management to your peers and
even the security guards. These first few meet and greets with
people set the foundation for future discussions and
interactions. Following these 10 simple rules will assist in your
preparation for the days ahead and aid you in becoming recognized
as the successful person you are.

The 10 Simple Rules:

1. Smile and be energetic. More than likely you will be
introduced by your manager for the first round blitz and after
that a peer or co-worker will continue introductions over an
extended period of time. You want to smile and act enthusiastic
to promote the persona that you are personable and approachable.
Putting on a happy face has never been more appropriate; most
people will take this first meeting to heart and judge you by
your initial actions and body language.

2. Do not try to be the expert. Recognize the people are
knowledgeable and have been doing their job competently or they
would not be employed. Give yourself time; the top and bottom
performers will surface over the course of the next few months.

3. Ask questions. This is your opportunity to ask as many
questions as you can. At no other point in your new position do
you have the window of opportunity granted to you as you do in
the first few weeks on a job. Nobody expects you to know what is
going on ... use this to your advantage in knowledge
acquisition.

4. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is going to
be necessary because there are terms, systems, databases, and
people you just do not know about. Treat this as another
opportunity to get to know people, their functions, likes, and
you might even get a few *watch out for this* type of responses.

5. Do the dirty work. Yes, you can do the odd jobs; the tasks
that everyone does not like to do but are necessary for the
business to operate. Take this as a learning opportunity; you
will acquire functional job knowledge as well as garner some
respect from your peers. I would guess you may have to perform
the task(s) for a few months, but these will soon be passed on to
the next new hire.

6. Plan to get to work early. You're new; make getting to work
before your manager a priority. Why, because it shows respect,
willingness to learn and will provide them an opportunity to have
one on one time with you early on. The other benefit is you can
see a pattern of arrivals by fellow peers and managers that may
at some point help you settle into a normal routine. I would keep
the early schedule for at least the first month, and then figure
out what is an acceptable compromise.

7. Plan to stay late. You're new; plan your schedule around
leaving work after your manager a priority. Why, because it shows
respect, dedication, and provides people the flexibility to meet
with you in a larger window during the day. The additional
benefit is that you can see a pattern of departures by fellow
peers and managers that might at some point help you settle into
your normal routine. As with Rule 6, I would keep the late
schedule for at least the first month, then figure out what is an
acceptable compromise.

8. Respect everyone's time. A majority of the people you will
meet are probably time challenged anyway, and may perceive the
*new hire* as just another burden to them achieving their daily
goals. Sure they will be willing to help you, but recognize their
time is valuable also. Prepare for these interactions as well as
you can; be personable but DO NOT OVERSTAY YOUR WELCOME.

9. Be on time or early to meetings. You need to be the person
sitting in the conference room prior to the start of the meeting.
This situation helps let people know you are respectful,
facilitates additional introductions and does not detract from
the meeting agenda or content.

10. Complete your required training. If you were trained on a
particular task or support function process or procedure
previously, complete the training because many companies require
current certifications to their requirements. Sure they may be
the same, but there is always the possibility that you may learn
something you did not know. This also shows your willingness to
learn and participate, both good characteristics to portray early
in your new job.

Above all, be enthusiastic. The people around you will be willing
to assist you because everyone by nature wants to do a good job
and help people. I know, some do not and you will find out
quickly by their personalities, and more than likely they are not
the most popular people in the company. Time is on your side,
figure out who are the knowledge experts, you will need them in
the future. Great success awaits you, have fun!

There are literally thousands of people out there right now who
want to start their own online business. The problem is where to
begin and how to get started.

Oh sure, they know they can buy a domain and a web hosting
account, but that is not the problem. The hold up is that they
don't know what to sell on their websites that will allow them
to make a nice income to supplement the income from their regular
jobs.

Day and night, people browse this World Wide Web looking for a
hint or an insight that will point them in the direction of the
next big thing on the internet.

Let's be honest. Most people who want to start an online
business are only looking for enough extra income to pay an extra
car payment or to buy some clothes for their kids. Not everyone
is looking to get rich online.

Looking For Something To Sell

Most people online who are looking for an opportunity to make
money look first to common themes of products they already buy.

If you go to Google and type in "flowers" for your search, you
will find 339 million pages found. If you take the same search to
Yahoo, you will still find 202 million results. With that kind of
competition, why would anyone want to try to break into that
industry as an online entrepreneur?

Suppose the next thought takes the aspiring entrepreneur to
"jewelry"? A Google search will turn up 551 million to Yahoo's
261 million pages. Again, why would someone try to tackle such an
overcrowded marketplace?

On top of that, as part-time entrepreneurs looking for some extra
money, they don't have the time or resources to try to knock
heads with these major corporations who run the competing
websites in these markets.

Add to that the need to handle actual products and product
fulfillment, and your part-time start-up entrepreneur really
starts to lose interest. People tend to shy away from product
fulfillment related industries. Their homes are already crowded
enough without adding retail products to their space.

Something To Sell That Does Not Require A Warehouse or a Huge
Investment

It is at about this time the opportunity search changes gears.
There are many forks in the road, and the road you choose can be
as hard or as easy as you make it for yourself.

Where to go from here:

1. Digital products - E-books and Software

2. Product Drop-Shipping

3. Affiliate programs

4. On-site Advertising

Let's look at each one of these individually:

Digital Products - E-Books and Software

We all have some kind of knowledge to share. If you determine
that you have some kind of knowledge that you can share, then
there is likely someone out there in the world who would be
willing to pay you to obtain that same knowledge.

E-books are an ideal way to disseminate this information. With
the e-book format, there are no printing costs, since your book
is stored as a digital file. Self-publishing a digital ebook is
not nearly as hard as you might think it would be.

Software is a similar beast. Since it is a digital product, you
don't have to cover the costs of packaging and distribution. You
can sell your software online, cutting out the middleman, keeping
the extra profits for yourself.

Product Drop-Shipping

Some wholesale companies will allow you to buy products from them
on a piecemeal basis. Of course, the cost is a bit higher than
what it would be if you bought products a pallet at a time, but
the convenience to you more than makes up for the additional
cost.

The "drop-shippers" allow you to sell a product to your
customers, and then you can take the money you collected from
your customer to the drop-shipper. The drop-shipper will ship the
product directly to your customer.

In some cases, the drop shipper will even put your own custom
label on the outside of the container, making the fact that you
used a drop-shipper completely unseen by your customer.

To find wholesale companies who offer drop-shipping services,
check these folks out: http://www.worldwidebrands.com

Affiliate programs

With an Affiliate program, you can register with a seller, and
the seller will give you a unique URL that you can use to promote
their products or services. When someone uses "your affiliate
URL" to visit the seller's website, the seller will track that
person until the visitor leaves the site. (Some Affiliate sellers
will drop a cookie on the computer of the visitor, and if that
person returns to the seller's website within one year, then you
will get credit for that visitor returning to the seller's
website.) If the visitor buys a product or service from the
seller, then your account will be credited for bringing a buyer
to the website. This will result in your earning a commission for
bringing the buyer and seller together.

On-Site Advertising

Both Google and Yahoo's Overture services offer an option to
webmasters to carry their advertising on your website. When
someone clicks a link on your website and visits the
advertiser's website, then you would get paid a small payment
for having connected the potential buyer to the seller's
website.

This is a type of advertising that pays you when someone visits
the seller's website. Contrast that with the Affiliate program,
which pays you when someone buys a product from the seller's
website, and then you can see the fine line difference between
the two types of advertising.

How Much Can You Make Utilizing On-Site Advertising?

Truth be told, there are a lot of people on the internet who
makes tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars per month ---
yes, I said, "per month" --- using only Google's on-site
advertising program, called Adsense. The rest of us make hundreds
or thousands per month.

The truth is that with Google's contextual advertising program
called Adsense, your income is based on what the advertisers are
willing to pay for your traffic and how much traffic you can
generate.

The Profit-and-Loss Factor for the Advertiser

It is a matter of profit-and-loss for the advertiser. If the
advertiser pays one dollar for a visitor, and every 35th visitor
buys what the advertiser is selling, then the advertiser is
getting one buyer for every $35 spent. If the advertiser's
profit margin is enough to afford spending $35 to acquire one
customer, then the advertiser will feel his advertising is
worthwhile, and he will keep on coming back for more
advertising.

If on the other hand, the advertiser is only earning a gross
profit of $20 per transaction, then he or she will have a hard
time justifying the $35 advertising expenditure.

This is why you will find that most Google and Yahoo advertisers
are only willing to spend 25 or 50 cents to get one visitor to
their website.

And then depending on a number of factors, you will only earn
30-50% of the gross revenue that Google or Yahoo earned for that
visitor.

Taking the lowest case denominator approach, 30% of 25 cents is
roughly eight cents that you will be paid for each visitor that
you send to an advertiser.

Some of these guys who are knocking down ten thousand dollars a
month are actually doing so at eight cents per click! What is
their secret to success? They are getting thousands of people to
visit their website everyday.

The Profit-and-Loss Factor for the Affiliate Seller

On the flip side, let us take a look at the same scenario for the
Affiliate seller. Instead of paying for visitors, advertisers are
paying for actual sales.

The Affiliate seller knows his or her margin well enough to know
that they can afford to pay anywhere from 2-50% of the actual
transaction amount to the person who referred the buyer to their
website.

The Affiliate seller is not paying for advertising on a gamble,
instead, they are paying for advertising on a sure thing.

It is not unheard of to earn $20, $50 or $200 on a single
Affiliate sale transaction.

If you are able to convert one person in thirty-five to buyers of
an affiliate product or service, you could conceivably make more
money with less traffic, than the guys knocking down the big
bucks with Adsense.

Mix-and-Match For The Greatest Success

This is really important to your bottom line. If you fail to heed
my advice, your website may fail to survive.

Unless you are the owner of a product or service sales website,
then you will be relying on the various advertising opportunities
to survive.

You are best to mix-and-match your offers for the greatest
success. Yes, do set up Google Adsense on your site, but also set
up Affiliate programs on your site.

You may sell a few products each week, and the sale from those
products might make a good income for you. But, for the people
who arrived on your site who are not interested in your main
offering, give them another advertisement to click on before they
leave. This way, you can get the Pay-Per-Click advertising
revenue from those people who chose not to buy the products and
services that you are selling through the Affiliate programs.

Diversification Is Your Key To Success

Don't let yourself be fooled by the idea that you can be
profitable with only one product or service offering or
advertising revenue generator. Many people have entered this
medium with a Made For Adsense (MFA) site, and many of those
people have gone out of business in just a few months.

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. Or else, when you
fall, you will have nothing to show for all of your hard work.

Roast Turkey, Made Easy

Charlie Burke, food writer The Heart of New England
http://www.TheHeartofNewEngland.com

High heat roasting (500 degrees) intensifies flavors and
considerably shortens cooking time so there is less time for
the white meat to dry out while the dark meat reaches proper
temperature. We have found that fresh local turkey cooks in
a surprisingly short time and has superior taste, although
commercial turkeys are quite consistent in quality. It is
important that the oven be clean, because excess smoke will
be caused by any residue in the oven.

Turkeys in the 12 – 16 pound range are ideal for this
technique. Brining, the only extra step worth considering,
helps ensure a moist result (kosher birds should not be
brined because salt has already been added). Because the
skin is impervious, spreading with oil or butter or basting
are not necessary to keep the meat moist. Additionally, the
turkey should be covered with a moist cloth and brought to
room temperature before cooking at high temperature (3 – 5
hours for a 15 - 16 pound turkey).

Cooking the turkey without dressing gives the best results
because of shorter cooking time and is safer. All poultry
have salmonella risk, but dressing served below 180 degrees
is the most common source of food poisoning from turkey. If
you wish to cook the dressing in the turkey, bring it to
room temperature before placing it into the turkey and make
sure it reaches the proper temperature. It is best to cook
the stuffing in a casserole adding some of the liquid from
the roasting pan for flavor.

A thick-bottomed roasting pan with handles and an instant
reading thermometer are good investments which can be used
for roasting meats and vegetables throughout the year.

To serve 10 or more:

One 16 pound turkey
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper

For brine:
2 cups kosher salt 8 quarts water

If brining, dissolve salt in water in a large stock pot. Add
turkey and refrigerate overnight. Remove from brine, rinse
and pat dry with paper towels. Proceed as below.

For stock:
Neck, gizzard and heart from turkey, rinsed and
dried
canola oil
1 medium onion cut in half
1 medium carrot
1 stalk celery
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon pepper corns
3 cups chicken stock
3 cups water

Place a small volume of oil in a heavy pot over medium heat.
Add neck, gizzard and heart and cook, turning until browned.
Add the remaining stock ingredients and bring to boil;
reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 2 hours, skimming
foam from time to time. Strain and set aside. This can be
done well ahead of the rest of the meal.

Roasting turkey:

Rinse inside and out, dry with paper towels and bring turkey
to room temperature, keeping skin covered with a moist towel
to prevent drying. Preheat oven to 500 degrees (450 degrees
works nearly as well; cooking times will be slightly
longer). Sprinkle turkey with ground pepper and salt and
place into a roasting pan; we place it directly into the
pan, but a rack can be used. Cook, rotating pan 180 degrees
after 1 hour; add 1 -2 cups water or chicken stock to pan if
drippings appear to be turning too dark.

Check temperature in the thickest part of the thigh at 1 ľ
hours. Remove from oven when temperature is 170 degrees,
about 2 hour's total cooking time for unstuffed turkey. Add
approximately 30 minutes if you have stuffed the turkey. Let
turkey sit for 30 minutes, during which the temperature in
the thigh should reach 180 degrees.

Gravy:

While turkey is resting, pour fat from roasting pan and
place pan over medium – high heat. Pour stock into pan;
boil, scraping up the browned drippings from the pan. Boil
until reduced nearly by half, check and add salt and pepper
to taste. Keep hot and serve with turkey.

This high heat method reliably yields moist flavorful turkey
and is remarkable for its simplicity. Brining is not
essential, and plain chicken broth can be used for making
the pan gravy instead of the giblet stock. Cooking times are
short: 3 hours for a 20 pound unstuffed turkey, and an
amazing 1 hour and 20 minutes for one of 12 pounds.

Become familiar with high temperature roasting, and you will
enjoy predictable results, simplify holiday cooking and have
more time to enjoy this special time of the year with your
family.

Thanksgiving Glazed Vegetables

By Charlie Burke
Food Columnist, The Heart of New England online magazine
http://www.TheHeartofNewEngland.com

Although most of us have Thanksgiving traditions, some
variation in the menu can add interest to the meal. Choose
your favorite vegetable or a mix; two pounds is sufficient
for four to six side dishes. If using parsnips alone,
decrease the maple syrup to 1 tablespoon because of their
natural sweetness.

2 pounds of root vegetables (such as carrots, parsnips,
sweet potatoes, etc.)

For glaze:
˝ stick butter
2 tablespoons maple syrup (grade B is fine)
1 tablespoon water
Salt and pepper to taste

Peel vegetables. Cut carrots and parsnips into 3 inch
lengths, slice lengthwise into 1/3 inch slices and then cut
slices into strips of equal width. Slice turnip or sweet
potato into 1/3 inch slices and then into strips of equal
width.

Cook vegetables in a large pot of boiling salted water until
slightly tender but not soft. Drain and immediately plunge
into a large bowl of iced water. Drain thoroughly and
refrigerate if not finishing recipe.

To finish, melt butter in a heavy pot sufficient to hold all
the vegetables. Add maple syrup, water and vegetables and
cook over low temperature, stirring occasionally until all
are coated and a glaze forms on them. Correct seasoning and
serve immediately.

Being a Parent... Opportunities to Turn A Bad Experience Into a Good Experience

The biggest challenge I have had to face in my own life is that
of being a good parent. My kids make it hard for me to stay true
to the rules of good parenting... They break everything I own...
Repeatedly...

Fortunately, I do have the presence of mind to realize that as
toddlers and young children, they really do not intend to break
things... Instead, they are trying to get a grasp on how the
world around them works.

Yep, the lego floats. I wonder what it will do if I flush it??

"Daddy! The toilet is stopped up."

So, Daddy pulls the toilet up, tries to backfeed a snake, and
finally gives up. Daddy had to buy a new toilet, because he could
not loose the lego stuck in its plumbing.

Of course, the kiddies never told me what they flushed. All I
knew is that I could not get it out.

So, I turned it into a learning experience for my boys.

I carried the toilet to the street, and took the boys with me. I
took my trusty hammer and broke the plumbing portion of the
toilet to see what kind of blockage I had tried to overcome. Upon
finding a lego in the plumbing, I instructed the boys that the
reason they could not use their toilet is because their lego got
stuck.

We have been working with the kids to teach them an understanding
of the value of money. The six year old is starting to get it,
but the boy who just turned four is still a bit unconcerned about
such things.

I explained to the boys that we would have to spend money to buy
a new toilet. And, because that requires money to be spent, I
would not be able to afford to take them bowling as promised. I
could have afforded to do so, but they needed to learn a lesson.

Once they calmed from losing their bowling privileges, we took a
bad and made it fun.

Each boy got the opportunity to use the hammer on the remains of
our toilet. The trash guys would not have picked up the toilet,
because it was a big object. So, I killed two birds with one
stone, so to speak.

Each boy got to take turns breaking the toilet into smaller
pieces. They had a blast.

Then, we took the chance to teach them the basics of basketball.
We needed the small chunks of porcelain in the trash barrel, so
we set the barrel nearby and tossed bits of the remains of the
toilet into the trash can, as if we were playing basketball.

It was an awesome experience overall, and my kids got to learn a
few things, and try a few new things along the way.

And yes, we did wash our hands after our game of basketball.

Love and the Red Sox - How the Red Sox Prepared Me For Dating
Copyright (c) 2007 Barbara Grassey
http://www.barbaragrassey.com

I found out a very good friend of mine is a Cleveland Indians
fan. Rabid Cleveland Indians fan. As a Red Sox fan, this is on
par with finding out your current boyfriend is gay. ("He was
always so good about going to Ikea with me...") We have found
our first point of disagreement after a year and a half of
friendship. In my state of shock, all I could think was, "Who
the heck is a Cleveland Indians fan?" I pictured my buddy and
Drew Carey alone in the stands wearing raccoon coats and
clutching little Indians pennants. Maybe a little ways from them
would be two transplanted Red Sox fans, there to cheer on Trot
Nixon. (To his credit, my friend was cheering on the Red Sox for
the World Series so he has redeemed himself.)

Now, intellectually I know that the Indians and the Rockies are
both great teams and deserve every fan they have. But I am a Red
Sox fan. That long-standing tradition of baseball suffering and
angst is just not possible for Denver (the team hasn't been
around long enough to be long-suffering) and angst is just not
part of the fabric of Cleveland. (Please note that I am not
making a mean, incredibly easy joke on fabric and Cleveland. I
have my standards. So insert your own Cleveland/polyester joke
here. I won't since they came close to whipping my Sox's
butts.) In true Red Sox war cry fashion, I have to say, "At
least it isn't the Yankees." And this is the attitude, this is
the tradition that has prepared me for the dating world.

Face it, unless you married the guy who asked you to the junior
and senior prom, you are probably going to have some bad dating
experiences. But if you grew up as a Red Sox fan, you can handle
it.

Most years, the season starts off like most relationships. The
Red Sox are looking good, looking strong, really impressing us.
Right up to the All Star Break. About two and a half months.
And if you compare the time tables, most relationships look good
the first couple of months. But then there is that slight slip
up, a bobble, an error that brings what could have been a lovely
evening to an inauspicious close. You start having second
thoughts. You really do have a headache.

You can handle this because you have invested just a short period
of time in this illusion called hope. You are not totally
emotionally invested. (Note: You are lying to yourself.) You
have seen them slip and recover before. You know that men need
to be forgiven for the things they do that are just, well, guy
things. It was a one-time aberration. So it might still be
okay. This guy might still be the one. We still have a shot at
going all the way. And while you would never voice that hope out
loud to anyone, it is clanging in the back of your mind, every
time he brings flowers; every time Ortiz slams one home. Maybe,
maybe, maybe.

Unconsciously, you dial your commitment level back a couple of
notches; you turtle back into survival mode. You may check in on
the man and the team from time to time, allowing chances at
redemption but they are both slipping in the standings. You are
already aware that No, he is not the one and No, this is not the
year. You just aren't ready to admit it to yourself yet. That
will come at the beginning of September.

But every so often, you have a summer that is everything you
could ever hope for. The boys are making plays that are as
finely choreographed as a ballet; they are knocking in runs, they
can do no wrong. Your dating relationship looks like the montage
from every chick flick ever made where the guy is funny and
charming and so there for you. You are collectively upbeat and
full of life and you are a part of the upsurge of excitement and
hope. Everything looks like you are heading towards that golden
moment, you are ready to make that commitment in front of God and
everyone: "I think we are going to make it this year. I think
we can win the Series."

You hold your breath, waiting for the implosion. They will blow
a lead so badly you have to wonder if it is intentional. He will
do something unbelievably, unforgivably stupid. It will be the
deal breaker. It will be the colossal error that ruins
everything. It is the self-sabotage that will tell you "No,
this is not the guy for you. This is not the year." They will
fall further and further behind. You will wonder what you saw in
him in the first place. You are prepared to be bitter because
you have played the fool once again.

You stock your woman-cave with Godiva chocolate and quarts of
Haagen-Daaz for the coming crash (after all, you have been here
before) and you are prepared to spend the winter recovering from
the dreams of what could have been.

You hold your breath, your muscles tense waiting for the fall.
And a miracle happens. Incredibly, inexplicably, he comes out of
a tailspin and soars like a hawk on a thermal. They sweep the
series and sweep you off your feet. That flame of hope that you
were prepared to let die catches fire and you are glad that you
took a chance on looking foolish. It was worth sticking your
neck out, it was worth crawling out on that shaky, straggly limb
of hope. Because when it comes to love and the Red Sox, anything
is possible.

Become a Tourist for a Day with Your Kids
…In Your Own Hometown
By Marcia Passos Duffy
http://www.TheHeartofNewEngland.com

I lived in the suburbs of New York City almost all my life
and it was only when I was in my 20's and working on 5th
Avenue when I finally went to the top of the Empire State
Building. It took me almost two decades as well to ice-skate
at Rockefeller Center, browse the Museum of Natural History,
and see a Broadway play.

Now living in New England I still tend to overlook the
tourist attractions in my own backyard. It took us eight
years after we moved to New Hampshire before we climbed the
"most-climbed mountain in the world," Mt. Monadnock, just a
15 minute drive from our house.

I once read a story about a family that took a week-long
vacation in their own hometown. They visited museums, ate
out every night, and basically took in their surroundings
with the new eyes of visitors. I didn't have a week – but a
few hours I did have. So when my neighbor suggested that we
become tourists for a day in our hometown I jumped at the
chance. My neighbor and I planned a simple late morning
excursion with our kids on the local trolley.

I have never been on our trolley. I see it motoring around
town every time I leave my house to run errands. It looks
sweet, touristy, and fun. The windows are rolled all the way
up in the warm weather. The seats are wood. The pick-up spot
was a five minute walk from the house, so we all walked down
to our local supermarket to wait for the 11:35 a.m. trolley.

Why it seemed so exciting is beyond me. I knew where the
trolley went and I've seen all those spots a thousand times.
I knew our final destination was a mere one mile from our
house. But somehow, shedding the car and climbing aboard the
trolley made it all different. And the kids actually cheered
(the younger ones) when the trolley made the turn into the
parking lot.

I would love to wax philosophical about the wind blowing
through my hair and seeing the familiar scenes through
different eyes. And I would if my youngest had not had an
intense attack of vertigo which made him exclaim (uh, shout)
that the trolley was going to tip over with all of us in it
with each turn the driver took. He insisted on sitting up
front, where the windows were closed, with me glued to his
side; I spent the entire 20 minutes of the ride trying
reassure him that this was not a doomsday ride.

But hey, those are the chances you take traveling with
children, even if it's in your own backyard. The ride took
us the "long way" past the hospital, toward downtown to a
small old woolen-mill-turned-mall. "It takes a lot longer to
get the Colony Mill on the trolley," my son said when we
finally got off, relieved to be on solid ground (the driver

I'm sure was even more relieved). We had a pleasant few
hours, ate lunch and did a little shopping. While we were
enjoying ice cream, we suddenly saw the return trolley go
by. "Oh well," my son said, "we can walk." And we did --
bundles in hand -- on the bicycle path, a half a mile home.

My friend and I looked at each other, pleased with the day.
It was already past 2 p.m. "It wouldn't have been the same
if we took our cars," she said. And I agree. There is really
something special about being a tourist in your own hometown.

Tips: How to Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown

1. Go to your local Chamber of Commerce for guides and maps.
You may think you know your town, but you'd be surprised by
all that is new to see and explore.

2. Go to the local library. Libraries often have
special discounted rates and good resources for children
about your hometown.

3. Go to a restaurant you've never tried.

4. Take a bus (or trolley if your town has one!)
to another part of town.

5. Sign up for a tour – such as a walking tour,
museum tour or historical tour.

6. Park the car and walk! It's amazing how different
your familiar surrounding looks on foot.

7. Book a night at your local hotel or B&B.
You can't imagine how thrilling it is for kids to spend
the night just minutes from home that has a pool or other amenities.

8. Take pictures, have your kids send postcards to their
neighbors and friends. They may think you're a little crazy,
but you'll have fun!

Easy (and elegant) Holiday Appetizers
by Charlie Burke
Food Columnist, The Heart of New England online magazine
http://www.TheHeartofNewEngland.com

With attention centered on preparation for the big holiday meal,
cooks have little time for preparation of complicated
appetizers. With this in mind, here are several ideas which
are simple to prepare or can be done ahead.

Marinated olives

Salty and colorful, these go well with drinks. These should
be prepared a few days ahead and are a great improvement
over bland canned olives.

4 cups assorted olives such as calamata, nicoise and
Sicilian green.
Extra virgin olive oil sufficient to cover olives
Zest of 1 lemon, grated
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 ˝ teaspoon of oregano or herbes de Provence
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Juice of ˝ lemon or to taste
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 teaspoon of sea salt

Mix all ingredients and store in a jar or covered container
in the refrigerator, giving them a shake occasionally. Bring
to room temperature before serving.

Fresh oysters

The briny sweet flavor of Damariscotta oysters may well be
remembered long after the holiday meal is forgotten.
Whenever we are in mid coastal Maine, my wife and I always
find a way to get to Damariscotta and to the Fisherman's
Catch, a fish market on the banks of the Damariscotta River,
the cleanest estuary on the east coast.

Shuck oysters (at least 4 per person) and place on a platter
of crushed ice. Serve with lemon wedges, a little
horseradish , and a small dish of red wine vinegar, chopped
shallots and fresh ground pepper. Please no bottled cocktail
sauce which masks the delicate flavor. I prefer them plain
or with a little lemon juice.

Smoked seafood:

Serving is simple: Place salmon or a mix of salmon, trout
and mussels on a platter. Add lemon wedges and a cup of
mayonnaise mixed with lemon juice, capers and crushed pepper
(taste as you mix until you have a mild lemony taste). Supply thin
slices of toasted French bread or put the seafood in individual
leaves of Belgian endive for a creative presentation.

Fruit and cheese:

Blue cheese and fresh pears are a perfect match; simply
slice ripe pears, plate and crumble blue cheese over the
fruit. Add some chopped pecans or walnuts to finish and
you have a quick and quite elegant dish.

A Lemon A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Keeping a good stock of lemons on hand can be your ticket to
vibrant health. Squeeze a little lemon in your water for
surprising health benefits year round.

Over a hundred years ago it was noted in a respected medical
journal that drinking one Lemon Squash (lemon squeezed in water)
every day would keep you healthy.

Actually, one of the simplest things you can do on a daily basis
to alkalize your body is drink clean water with a squeeze of
lemon in it. Although lemons are acidic, they have an alkalizing
effect in the body. That's a really good thing too.

It's critical to maintain balanced pH levels to ensure optimal
health. The human body can only survive in a very narrow pH range
and thrives in an even narrower range.

Unfortunately, much of what ends up in our bodies these days has
an acid forming effect. Not only our food choices (i.e. red
meats, white flour and sugar, coffee, etc.) but also most
manufactured medicines, all pollution, life-depleting emotions
like anger, fear, and shame, and so much more. With all this
stacking the odds against us, it's that much more important to
consume alkalizing foods.

Replacing sweetened and processed drinks with lemon water has the
double benefit of eliminating the acidic drink and including an
ultra-alkalizing alternative. If you're going to make lemonade
rather than just add a squeeze of lemon to your clean water, keep
in mind that most sweeteners are acidic and will reduce the
benefits available.

I wish I knew the importance of alkalizing a long time ago! I'm
surprised how few people know just how important it truly is.
Learning this one thing has changed my life in so many ways.

I've had unexplained aches and pains all my life, I've been
tired beyond reason, I've tried unsuccessfully to lose weight
(it always found me again), and I've had dermatitis on my hands
for years. All that has changed since I began eating more
alkalizing foods and stopped consuming so many acid forming foods
and drinks.

I did some research and created a list of alkalizing foods. Now I
just eat and drink mostly from my alkalizing food list. I don't
eat strictly just from the list but as long as I eat mostly from
the list I feel great and continue to lose weight.

My life has changed so much in a few short months I just keep
wondering why I never learned this sooner. All my aches and pains
are gone! For the first time in forty years I don't hurt, not
even around my period!

I have energy for the first time in my life. I've even started
going to the gym and walking on a regular basis. I've tried to
do this many times in the past but I always hurt too much and got
too tired. Not this time!

My weight is finally coming off easily and consistently and I get
to eat great food all the time. Now, unlike every other time
I've tried to lose weight, I'm eating as much as I want,
whenever I want and loving every minute of it. I also love that I
don't have to count calories, or carbs, or grams, or anything.

The skin on my hands is completely healed and my hands look the
youngest they've looked in years. In fact, all my skin looks
great and I've noticed that nicks and scrapes I get in the
garden heal so fast I can practically watch them disappear. That
has never been the case before.

I've shared my list of alkalizing foods with friends and
they're getting great results too. I'm having fun creating
great recipes too. It's amazing how many great tasting foods are
alkalizing or neutral.

Of course the simplest alkalizing recipe is just adding lemon
juice to clean water. It's portable, readily accessible at most
restaurants, and lemons are available year-round all over the
world. It's one of nature's perfect foods

Personal Decisions Of The Heart: Help! Held Hostage By Feelings!

Did you start your day with Love or Hate?

Discover how to improve the quality of your life by asking this
simple question!

As it has become obvious from the first three articles (
SH-H-H-H! Feelings Present!, The Big Cover-Up!, And Personal
Decisions Of The Heart: Feelings Buried Alive And Still Lurking!
), that your feelings and the charge of energy that has built up
behind them is continually lurking within you, holding you
captive.

Worse yet, you may not even know they are there waiting to throw
your life off track. To all intents and purposes your life
appears to be different than anyone else's life until you look
closer and discover that you are, as is everyone else, affected
by feelings, by what you think and by how you respond to the
feelings buried within. Once you take a look inside yourself,
what do you find?

Surprise...surprise! There lurking within your heart are all
kinds of unresolved feelings lying in wait, like an ambush that
you can't see! You thought they were gone because they were out
of sight. But, now you see that this is not the case. That is why
it has been said that the heart is unknowable. You think that you
are making decisions based on your reason when in reality you may
be only reacting to previously laid down emotions that you are
now experiencing the outcomes of in your daily life. So, it seems
that you can't go forward, you can't go back and you can't get
away from them.

So what can you do?

Do you stay there hoping the emotional charge or the full impact
of your feelings will go away, ( which they won't ) or do you
face your fear(s) recklessly and let the chips fall where they
may?

An eithy-eight year old Tennessee broom maker said that the
secret to life is like riding a horse. It's all in knowing how
to get back up on your horse if you should fall off into one of
the ditches that runson either side of the trail you're riding
on. Once you get yourself back in the saddle you continue in the
direction you were heading. For those of you who are experienced
hands at riding, it is easy, but to a newbie it can be quite
daunting. In theory, this approach works. But in practice how do
you correct the imbalances in your life that have whirled your
life into disharmony and disequilibrium?

I firmly believe that if you want to learn how to do something,
it is best to align yourself with someone who is already in the
saddle and succeeding very well at staying in the saddle.

When in Italy, an Italian Marquis I had the good fortune to meet,
told me how he had squandered his whole family fortune while
living in Peru. All he had left was an old volkswagon bus, a
jukebox and an idea. But having remembered the feeling or
experience of what it was like to have an abundance of money, he
figured out a plan of what to do to regain his fortune.

His plan was to place a jukebox in every restarurant along the
Peruvian coast. Persistently, he presented his offer to
restaurant owner after restaurant owner. After he got his first
jukebox into one restaurant, it became easy to get the next one
into another restaurant. And so he set up a chain of jukeboxes .
With the money he gained, he started buying one deep sea fishing
vessel after another until he had a whole fleet of them providing
tourists with the opportunity to do deep sea fishing. Not only
did he regain his fortune but he amassed ten times what he had
lost!

But what do you do if you do you have never experienced emotional
stability, peace, serenity and abundance in one or all areas of
your life? How do you go about getting the lifestyle you want and
the feelings that go with it? You do it in your mind first:
Imagine you will be taking a trip to an unknown country. Would
you just get on a plane or a ship and go there? Probably not,
rather you would plan the trip, taking into account the potential
cost to you in terms of time, energy, money and whatever benefits
you hope to experience. You wouldn't only look at all the
positives but also the possible negatives that you might
encounter The same is true when you begin your journey to The
Most Sought After Frontier - The Heart of The Matter - Feelings!

Thus, as you prepare mentally for your trip, you will have looked
at the benefits and wished for outcomes, as well as the worst
possible scenarios and how to deal with them. Then, if the most
horrible situation that you could imagine doesn't happen when
you're actually underway and the trip is no longer a theory, but
reality, anything that happens after that can only be a blessing
for you to rejoice in.

So, will you do it? Will you take your e-motional life into your
own hands?

Will you empower yourself to no longer be a helpless victim but a
Victor?

Will you enter The Most Sought After Frontier - The Heart of The
Matter - FEELINGS?

A Man's Guide to the Perfect Filipina Bride
Copyright (c) 2006-2007 Jonas Patterson
Filipino Dating
http://www.filipino-dating.com

In order to find your perfect Filipina match you must first know
what real Filipina women are (not the misperceptions of Filipinas
you have grown up with) and make sure you can deal with certain
issues once the marriage is official.

Do Filipina Women Prefer Western Men To Filipino Men?

All a Filipina wants when looking for a man is a stable lasting
relationship. Considering the double standards in the Philippines
and the fact that they don't have divorce, it is true that
Filipina women have a lot to contemplate when considering
marrying a Filipino man. Western men are perceived as being more
modern and loving than Filipinos so it is no surprise when they
are more desirable for a life companion.

Do Filipina Women Prefer Men Who Are Many Years Their Senior?

Statistically, Western men who are looking for a Filipina wife
are above the age of 35. What makes them desirable is that they
are perceived by Filipinas as more mature, less promiscuous, and
financially stable. Such men have a better than average income, a
college education and most have been divorced once and are
seeking a stable lasting life-long relationship.

Is It True That Filipinas Are Submissive Little Sex Kittens?

Now here is the inconsistency. Many western men want their future
Filipina wife to be a virgin, and yet they are unwilling to
accept the limitations that such virtue implies. They wish for a
wife with no sexual history, yet hope that she has nothing else
on her mind other than to please their sexual desire.

In reality many Filipinas have advanced degrees of education and
professional lives. It could hardly be presumed that their only
purpose in life is to fulfill some man's wildest dreams. What
you do get when marrying a Filipina is woman dedicated to her
family and striving to keep her marriage successful.

Do You Want A Big Family?

Family will always remain a great priority for Filipino women;
and not just any family, but a big extended family. Ask yourself
if you want a big family and children (more children) because you
can be sure that any Filipina does.

Are You Religious?

There are three primary religions in the Philippines: 83% Roman
Catholic, 9% Protestant and 5% Muslim. It is common amongst
Filipino society to raise the family in the church. So be
prepared for some soul-searching on this matter since she is
probably more devoted to her religion than you are to yours. Your
perspective Filipina bride would most likely dream of a church
wedding, and some families even forbid their daughters to get
married without one.

Are You Ready To Accept Your New Wife's Family As Your Own?

You should be prepared to provide financial assistance to your
new, extended family when they have a need of medical attention,
or things like schooling or food. If you are capable and refuse
to help them, your lack of generosity would be inexplicable for
your Filipina wife and though she may not say anything, she will
neither respect you nor understand.

Are You Looking For A Filipina Wife Because You Hate The Women Of
Your Own Country?

You realize that it is not reasonable to hate an entire gender,
right? Even within the confines of a single country. If you are
marrying a Filipina, it should be because of who she is, not who
she is not.

Basically these are the main guides you should follow when
deciding whether a Filipina wife is right for you. If you can
handle these issues, I think you have made a great decision by
choosing a Filipina for your life companion and I can only wish
you luck in finding the perfect Filipina bride for you!

One of today's hottest items, and among the most requested
gifts, is the X-Box game system. Although video games are a lot
of fun, the money it costs to buy an X-Box would be better spent
on flowers. In fact, according to a study titled the Home Ecology
of Flowers Study conducted for the Society of American Florists
(SAF) Flower Promotion Organization (FPO), flowers have an
amazing affect on those who include them in their lives.

The study was conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., who is a faculty
member at Harvard Medical School and a practicing psychologist at
Massachusetts General Hospital. One of the findings of the study
was that they fuel compassionate feelings in people. Participants
in the study began to experience more feelings of compassion
towards other people after living with flowers for less than one
week.

The study also showed that flowers help people to feel less
anxious, worried, and depressed when they were at home. When
participants were at home with flowers they quickly began to feel
less negative. Because they wanted to see the flowers as much as
possible and as soon as they woke up each day, the participants
placed their flowers in areas where they would be spending a
great deal of time, such as the kitchen, dining room, and living
room.

Another finding of the study was that they improve the energy and
enthusiasm of people who live with them even when the flowers
aren't present. Participants felt better and happier in their
workplaces just because they had flowers at home.

To help spread the great news of the positive impact of flowers,
Dr. Etcoff will serve as the spokesperson for the SAF/FPO
alliance for a major public relations campaign set to begin soon.
The campaign will make the findings of the Home Ecology of
Flowers Study public and keep generating information about
flowers. Included in the campaign will be a press kit for print
media, a satellite television tour, and other materials.

Incredible news like this is definitely cause for celebration.
May I suggest a party complete with gifts? But, forget the X-Box,
give flowers, instead.

Past American Idol contestants Clay Aiken, Taylor Hicks, and
Kelly Clarkson may have stood up to the pressures of the American
Idol competition, but could they handle the stress of the
Designer Wedding Challenge.

Wedding professionals from around the United States are gearing
up to compete in the Designer Wedding Challenge, a competition
inspired by the popular reality television competitions. The
contest is set to take place on September 29 and 30, 2006 in
Rogers, Arkansas. According to event coordinator Shante Crockett,
included in the competition will be at least fifteen florists who
will compete in three contests:

  * Floral Design Competition: In this contest, florists will pit
themselves against one another to design gorgeous bouquets,
boutonnieres, and table centerpieces. The task is to create
pieces that are functional, beautiful, and unique.

  * Tablescape Competition: Contestants here will design elegant
table settings including flatware, table linens, and, of course,
the centerpiece. The table themes can vary, but all of them
should be beautiful and exemplify the chosen theme.

  * Interior Design Competition: Using a $20,000 budget, each
contestant must design a dream interior setting. This competition
is expected to be the biggest contest in the two-day event.

The events will be judged by celebrity event planner Preston
Bailey. Awards will be given for first, second, and third place.
While there are individual cash prizes as high as $2,500, it's
the prestige of being involved that will likely garner the
biggest rewards. Glende Wise, owner of the Bamboo Orchid in
Poteau, Oklahoma and contest participant, says, "It's
especially important for me because my business is new to the
area, and I am trying to break into the market."

Other competitions in the event are the Chair Design Competition,
Gown Design Competition, Jewelry Ensemble Competition, Cake
Design Competition, Photography Competition, and Videography
Competition.

2,000 people are expected to attend the Designer Wedding
Challenge at a ticket price of $20 each, not including seminars.
Attendees who wish to take part in the many seminars that will be
available will pay a ticket price of $150 each.

The event is sure to be a real crowd pleaser with all the
excitement and suspense of any reality competition currently
aired on television. So, if the music of American Idol isn't
your bag and you're more of a Martha Stewart fan than a Clay
Aiken fan, consider attending the Designer Wedding Challenge.

Aishwarya Rai And The Lotus Flower: Symbols Of India
Copyright (c) 2006-2007 Wesley Berry, AAF
Wesley Berry Flowers
http://www.800wesleys.com/

Aishwarya Rai is one of the latest beauties to come out of India.
She burst into the spotlight twelve years ago when she competed
in the 1994 Miss World pageant as a representative of India.
After winning the pageant, she went on to become a very
successful model and actress who has been dubbed "The Queen of
Bollywood." But, Rai isn't the only beauty to come out of
India; the gorgeous and exotic lotus flower is an ancient flower
so revered in India that it was named their national flower.

The lotus flower has been given a sacred place in Indian culture.
It plays a huge role in the art and mythology there and has done
so for centuries. In Indian society, the lotus represents
divinity, fertility, wealth, knowledge, and enlightenment.
Perhaps the reverence of the flower stems from the fact that is
an unquestionable beauty despite the fact that it grows out of
murky waters and mud. Because of its ability to grow in the
water, the lotus is often referred to as the water lily.

Though they have an exotic look, lotuses are actually fairly
simple to grow. However, first time lotus gardeners should be
aware that the lotus is a very invasive plant that can take over
your entire water garden if not tended to carefully. Also,
you'll notice that lotus plants may not bloom during their first
year-don't be discouraged, the plants will almost surely blossom
in the second year. As you watch your lotus plants grow and
blossom, watch for yellowing foliage and faded blooms; you'll
want to remove them to allow other leaves and blossoms to grow
healthy and strong.

Lotuses come in a variety of types that include small plants with
one-inch blossoms and larger ones with blossoms as big as your
face. Lotus colors include red, yellow, white, peach, violet, and
cream.

The lotus plant loves the heat-the hotter the better! In fact,
the hotter it is at night, the bigger the flowers will be. During
the winter you'll need to make certain the lotus tuber doesn't
freeze or it will die. If you're growing them in your garden
pond, the pond will need to be at least three feet deep so that
it doesn't freeze solid, which will jeopardize the tubers. If
you're growing them in pots, bring the pots inside for the
winter.

With proper care, your lotus flowers will grow to exotic and
fragrant flowers worthy of their status in India. They're
exquisite beauty will rival that of fellow Indian Aishwarya Rai.
