I recall awhile ago that someone suggested asking for half payment
upfront for long jobs. Anyone have a definition of 'long' they use for
this purpose? Nancy

Hi, everyone--

Here's an announcement for the Southern California chapter's next
meeting--same day as ours, June 3--for those who might be interested.

Therese Shere
ASI-SoCal presents:

Putting Your Collection Online
Saturday, June 3, 2000
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
UCLA's Young Research Library, 2nd floor, Room YRL 23167,
  the West Electronic Classroom.

Join us on Saturday, June 3, 2000, for a presentation
by Charlotte Brown, Asst. Head/University Archivist
of the Department of Special Collections at UCLA's
Charles E. Young Research Library. They are
undertaking a massive effort to put the majority of
UCLA's archival collection online. Ms. Brown will
describe for us the indexing/cataloging methodologies
they have developed for this process. She reports
that she is "delighted to have the chance to talk
about the project to people who will really understand."

To register, e-mail the Registration Form that follows to
the address below by May 30.

Sorry, but no registrations can be accepted after May 30th,
nor can you register at the door. This is so that a facility
of sufficient size can be reserved and set up in advance.

Your only expenses for the day will be for parking, $5.00
per car,and your lunch. We'll be eating "dutch" at the
food court in the North Campus Student Center,
near the meeting room.

You can take a look at the following website for maps of the
  UCLA campus:

  http://www.ucla.edu/map/

Once you get to the first map, click on section "C", for the North
Campus. In the enlarged view of section "C", find Building #5,
which is the Young Research Library, and building #7 is the
North Campus Student Center, where the food court nearest
to our meeting site is to be found.

Parking structures #3 and #5 are the best places to park;
on the map you will find them at positions 1:00 and 9:00
from the Young Research Library.

  Our plan is as follows:

First, drive to West L.A. to the UCLA campus.
Take the #405 freeway to the Sunset Blvd. exit, and go east.
Turn right,or south, on Hilgard Ave.

Second, drive south along Hilgard to the second campus
entrance at Wyton Drive, and turn right, then proceed
to the parking kiosk immediately in front of you. Purchase
a parking sticker for $5 per car, and tell the attendant
you are there for the ASI meeting. Obtain a campus map
from the attendant, and ask how to get to parking
structures #3 or #5.

Third, walk to the Young Research Library and go up to the
second floor, to Room YRL 23167, the West Electronic
Classroom, planning to arrive by 10:00 a.m. Look for
signs pointing the way when you enter the library.

Fifth, enjoy a fascinating discussion of a major online site
creation project. Sign up soon; the registration limit is 30,
owing to the size of the lecture room.

After the meeting and lunch, your parking fee entitles you
to spend the rest of the day on the UCLA campus, and
you can move your car to other campus parking structures,
if you wish.

Very near the meeting site you will find the outdoor
Murphy Sculpture Garden, the fascinating Fowler
Museum of Cultural History (building #20 on the North
Campus Map), and at the SE corner of the campus is the
Mathias Botanical Garden. Just south of the UCLA
campus is Westwood Village, with shopping, cinemas,
restaurants, and the Geffen Playhouse, as well as the
Armand Hammer Museum of Art. Just north of Sunset Blvd.
off the #405 is the Getty Museum, (310) 440-7300, open
until 6:00 p.m.on Saturday.

Greetings--

I'm considering joining one or two book industry organizations, partly as a
way of learning more about the book business and book production, and partly
(of course) as a networking opportunity. I'm curious whether anyone on the
list belongs to them. If you belong to Bookbuilders West, Bay Area Editors'
Forum, or the Women's National Book Association, would you share your
thoughts about the organization and its programs?

TIA,
Therese Shere

programs?

Therese--

About the book publishing associations. I joined Women's National Book
Association a couple of years ago. I enjoy the programs and have met
some really interesting people, but I have yet to get any work from any
of the members.

So, if you're doing it as a means of marketing, I would say it's not the
group I'd pick for that purpose, partly because it's members have more
bookseller's background than book preparation. There are some
publishers, but also writers and book agents and some wannabe writers.
It's a fun mix of people, mostly women and I like it enough to renew in
spite of the fact that I haven't gotten any work as a result of being a
member.

Dear Golden Gate Chapter members,

At the midwinter conference when I was vice-president (1993?), we had a panel
of related publishing organizations in the Bay Area. Each of the
organizations you mention was represented. I realize that these
organizations may have changed somewhat since then, but here are a few
thoughts on them.

Bookbuilders West is composed largely of people involved in the production of
books. Many book packagers and book production editors are now not in-house,
and they do the actual hiring of indexers. They are the type of people who
belong to Bookbuilders, and so it may be a very good place for networking and
meeting contacts that could actually lead to more work. They did have a jobs
hot-line at one point, although I don't know if it was for freelance work.

Bay Area Editors Forum consists of all types of editors. Carolyn McGovern
and I gave a presentation to them a couple of years ago about indexing--many
of them weren't really all that sure what indexing consisted of. I don't
think that editors are usually the ones who hire indexers, but this is
definitely a very nice bunch of folks who also work in publishing. There are
a few indexers who belong to the group (Aubrey McClellan being one).

Another organization you might want to consider is STC (Society for Technical
Communication). They have several chapters in the Bay Area, and they are
extremely active.

I have belonged to Bay Area Editors' Forum for several years. I rarely get
to their meetings, which appear to have very good programs that are of
interest primarily to editors. I was listed for a while in their directory
and am now listed on their website--www.editorsforum.org. I have gotten
three jobs through these listings (for two different clients) and am in
discussions about a possible job for a third client. I've never gotten that
kind of action from being listed every year in the Indexer Locator. I would
suppose that actually going to meetings might produce even more job leads,
especially because a significant number of the members seem to be freelance
project editors. The annual dues are only $40, certainly a bargain if you
make any contacts at all. The group meets approximately once a month and
their current favorite meeting place is the Borders in downtown S.F.

Hi all,

Like Julie, I've also belonged to the Bay Area Editors' Forum (BAEF) for
several years. I do both editing and indexing. In fact, when I first
started out freelancing, the majority of my work was editing. This year is
the first year that my indexing is surpassing my editing, which is great
because I've discovered that I prefer indexing. It's nice to have a little
variety though.

I'm listed on the BAEF Web site with a link to my own Web site. I've
received about six calls as a result. Three of the calls resulted in
indexing jobs, and one in an editing job. So, I'd say it was definitely
worthwhile to join.

I have yet to go to a meeting because I don't like to drive that far at night
(I'm in San Jose), but they do sound interesting and I'll probably go one of
these days. I'm sure it would be a great place for networking. They also
send out mail messages about jobs (freelance and permanent). These jobs are
mainly for editors, but where there are editors, there is often a need for
indexers--so it can be a good way to get contact information.

It looks like indexing is not the path I will be following, at least not at
this time as a profession. I enjoyed meeting you and the other women from
this area who are in the Golden Gate Chapter.

How do I unsubscribe from GGASI?

I hope you are happily settled into your new home.

It was good to get a chance to talk to you in Albuquerque--sorry you're
going to miss the June meeting.

I was going to ask you if you'd be willing to write a short article on your
impressions of the conference? I always appreciate your perspective. I'f

Hello all:

In the upcoming issue of Entry Points, I was hoping to include a few
reports from Golden Gate chapter members on the Albuquerque
conference. Quite a few of us were there and, if you were like me,
learned many things worth writing home about.

Please take a few minutes to write a short article about a workshop
you attended, something you learned, an extra-conference outing you
took part in...anything that would give those that stayed home a
flavor of the events in Albuquerque.

The deadline for articles for the August newsletter is August 10.
You
can send them to me at edaven@....

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Ellen-

Unfortunately, I'll have to turn down this request - just not able to add
anything to my sched at this point. My partner was just diagnosed with
lung cancer, so that is taking up most of my time and energy at the moment.
I feel confident that the outcome of all this will be positive, but for now,
I just can't add another item to my agenda.

Take care - and hope to see you all in the Fall.

best,

katherine
