Why Budgets Don't Work and How to Fix It
By Terry Rigg

This article is for those families that have sat down at a desk
or the kitchen table time after time trying to develop a family
budget that they can live with.

Why don't they work?

There are several answers to that question. Most budgets are
doomed from day one because they are too complicated, don't have
the commitment of all involved or the numbers simply don't add
up. The biggest culprit is that most people don't allow for
unexpected expenses.

Let's tackle these one at a time:

Too Complicated: When you list every expense you have on your
budget you set yourself up for defeat. Some budgets include
such things as cleaning supplies, dog food, haircuts and car
gas. In order to keep track of all of these you would need a
new box of envelopes every month.

Answer: Streamline your budget. By simply including a topic on
your budget entitled "Household" where you can include
everything you spend money on each month, excluding bills.
Groceries will undoubtedly be the largest expense in this
category. By taking the extra time to figure what needs to go
into your household budget when you set it up, you can save a
lot of time each payday.

Commitment:

1. Many times the commitment to live by a budget is lacking.
2. People get into spending habits that are hard to break.
3. There is constant friction in the family over money.
4. It is more comfortable to live beyond your means.

Answer: You have to consider all of the above problems when
setting up your budget. The Family Budget is just that, the
FAMILY BUDGET. Everyone in the family that is old enough to
count should be included. I don't mean to say that children
should have a say in where the money goes, but they should be
aware of what the spending limits of the family are. If you
work closely with your spouse in developing a family budget you
both are more likely to stick to it. There is one other detail
that will help. By setting aside money for yourself and your
spouse, that you don't have to account to the other for, your
budget is more likely to succeed.

The Numbers Don't Add Up:

You have more budget than you have paycheck. Generally, this
is caused by not being realistic in your budget. You try to
make your paycheck fit your budget.

Answer: Start by listing your household expenses and bills.
Then include 10% of your income for long and short term savings.
If this total is more than your paycheck, you have to cut back.
Start by looking at your household budget. Are there items that
you can do without? If you have money left over after
considering all of the above, then increase your savings.

Unexpected Expenses: This can be from your car breaking down,
need a new washer or any number of other expenses that you can't
predict.

Answer: While long term savings is for things such as a home or
car purchase or college for the kids, short term savings is just
as vital to your financial security. A short term savings will
accomplish two things. It will provide you with the money you
need to pay those unexpected expenses and it will cut down on
the use of credit cards. The short term savings could save you
hundreds of dollars a year.

When you develop your budget, keep the following things in mind:

1. Make your budget a simple as possible
2. Get the family involved.
3. Make your budget fit your paycheck, not the other way
around.
4. Plan for the unexpected.

Handle Your Distractions to Keep Focused

You've chosen to be more focused, you've discovered
what you want to focus on, and you know what you need
to do to maintain that focus.*  So that's it, job done;
you're totally focused. Well that may be true for the
moment, but there are still distractions which may get
in the way. Although you've taken all the critical
steps, there are still many things that can stop you
being focused. Why not approach it like a game you're
playing? This enables you to keep experimenting,
evaluating and improving parts of it. It's an ongoing
process. Part of this process is to become aware of
any distractions that are either there now or may come
up in time. When you're aware of these, you're more
likely to notice them for yourself and find a way to
handle them.

So, what sort of distractions could get in your way?
There may be external factors such as interruptions,
your environment, conflicting directions from different
people or other people's expectations.

There may be distractions in your mind, such as the
voice that's reminding you what else you need to do.
Your mind may also justify to you that there's something
else necessary for you to focus on. Being more focused
takes you outside your comfort zone and your ego will
object. Your ego will do anything to prevent this and
will create numerous distractions. It will try all
sorts of things to unfocus you and sabotage your success.
As you become more focused, you may find that initially
your ego objects even more and you may notice more
distractions than before. Life is full of distractions.
However, what if your ego isn't to blame? Maybe your
intuition brings to your attention some other things you
need to take care of.

What is often needed is enough space to see and
acknowledge all this, and to understand whether it's a
distraction or something you need to pay attention to.
Being focused doesn't mean working hard all the time;
it's also about having the space and time to be with
everything and see it for what it is. Distractions
won't just go away; they need identifying and they need
solutions.

I've always been pretty good at jumping from one thing
to another! Since paying more attention to what's been
happening these past few weeks, I've realised that I
often justify what I need to focus on, even when it's
really a distraction. Because the things I focus on at
these times fit into the bigger picture somewhere, I
justify to myself that they're still worth doing and I'm
not that far off track. However, they aren't where my
focus needs to be if I'm taking the most effective
action.

In order to have the space, I've decided to challenge
myself to do nothing when my focus is slipping. I
choose to sit quietly, do nothing and be with whatever
is going on in my mind or notice whether it's my
intuition. This prevents me from jumping from whatever
I was focusing on to something that may only be a
distraction anyway. Or there may be a really important
message that I'm missing. It's about being in the
moment, trusting myself and seeing what's needed.

Being focused takes practice. Keep identifying what
stops your focus and experiment with ways of overcoming
this. Only you can discover what you need to do
through experimenting and evaluating. No one else can
tell you what you need to do. What works for one
individual, doesn't work for another. What are you
willing to experiment with when your focus is slipping?

What I want for you is to handle the distractions that
keep you from accomplishing what you want to achieve.

The language associated with starting a business is unique.
Using the correct business terms makes you look more
professional and helps others understand exactly what you are
trying to communicate to them. There are also important legal
reasons to use specific language when describing your business.

Here is a list of familiar (and not-so-familiar) terms that can
help you learn the language of business:

1099 - A Form 1099 must be filed to report payments totaling
more than $600 or more made to any individual for rents or
services performed in the course of a calendar year. If this
form is not filed, you may be subject to penalties from the IRS.
1099 Workers are not employees and are responsible for reporting
their own income.

Accrual basis – A method of accounting that charges all income
and expenses to the period to which they apply, regardless of
whether money has been received.

Balance sheet – A financial statement that shows the total
assets, liabilities, and equity of a business.

Corporation – A legal form of operation under which the business
is recognized as a separate legal entity guided by a group of
officers known as the board of directors. Corporations are owned
by stockholders who invest capital into the corporation.
Stockholders are not personally responsible for the debts of the
corporation (unless they have personally guaranteed them), thus
reducing their liability to the limit of their investment.
Chartered or registered in the state in which it resides, a
Corporation can acquire and sell property, lend money, sue, be
sued, and can survive the death of its owners.

C Corporation – A Conventional Corporation, the C Corporation is
the most common form of a corporation.

Contractor – Also known as "Independent Contractor." Contractors
are responsible only for the work they do. Contractors are
generally specialists hired to do a specific job. Payments made
to contractors are reported to the IRS on Form 1099 and are
responsible for reporting their own income taxes. But be
careful! The IRS has very specific rules determining the
difference between a contractor and an employee. If the IRS
feels an individual should have been treated as an employee, you
will be liable for payroll taxes that should have been withheld
and paid, plus any interest and penalties. To be a contractor,
the person has to operating a business of his or her own.

Contract employee - An employee who is hired for a specific
purpose defined under the terms of a contract. The term is
sometimes used to describe Independent Contractors whose
earnings are reported on Form 1099. However, use of the term in
this manner is technically incorrect, since an independent
contractor cannot be an employee.

DBA – "Doing Business As." Also known as "Fictitious Name." Any
name other than your own under which you do business. For
example, if your name is John Smith and the name of your
business is "Paper Cutters," you would register your business as
John Smith, doing business as "Paper Cutters."

Disclosure agreement – A form of protection that safeguards an
idea during its developmental stage. Also see "Non-disclosure
agreement."

EIN – "Employer Identification Number." Also known as "Employer
Tax Identification Number." The number issued by the IRS by
which the employer is identified. Employers may apply for an EIN
by filing IRS Form SS-4.

Entrepreneur - A somewhat vague term typically used to describe
anyone who goes into business for themselves or who develops a
new idea for a business venture.

Free agent - The term "free agent" was developed to refer to
independent workers who are hired for specific, typically
short-term, professional jobs. The term is somewhat vague, as it
has been used by independent contractors, consultants, and
almost anyone else who has their income reported on Form 1099.

Freelance – Freelance workers are independent contractors who
perform work-for-hire. The term is most often applied to writers
and other providers of specific professional services.
Interestingly enough, the original "Freelancers" were knights
who were available to be hired to fight in battles for feudal
lords, hence the term "Free Lance."

LLC – "Limited Liability Company." A business form allowed in
many – but not all – states. Operates like a traditional
business partnership, distributing income and income tax to the
partners which they report on their individual income tax
returns. The LLC structure protects partners from personal
liability for the business's debts. LLC's carry significant tax
benefits over a limited partnership.

Non-disclosure agreement – provides legal protection preventing
the sharing of confidential information or "trade secrets" that
might benefit a competitor.

Partnership – an agreement between two or more individuals who
are in business together. There are several types of
partnerships.

Schedule C – the IRS form used for filing business income &
expenses as an adjunct to form 1040

Self employed – anyone who is in business for him or herself. A
self-employed person is responsible for filing their own
quarterly taxes and other tax responsibilities. Their income is
reported to the IRS on Form 1099.

Sole proprietor – a business with only one owner.

Subchapter S or S Corporation – A for of corporation that pays
out all income proportionately to their shareholders, who then
claim the income on their personal income tax returns.

Temporary worker – an employee hired on a temporary basis,
typically for a specific purpose. Temporary workers are often
hired to replace absent employees or for seasonal work, such as
extra retail workers hired during the holiday shopping season.
Temp workers can be hired as employees or independent
contractors.

W2 – The form used by employers to report wages and earnings of
an employee to the IRS.

Do You Remember To Send Nice Notes?

In the past few years, the look of marketing has changed -
for the better I believe. Money businesses spend on Public
Relations (PR) has increased and has become a marketing
priority. Even on the Internet, people want to connect with
you – to see your picture and the pictures of your staff.
I’ve had a few clients send me their pictures, too!

Many people enjoy receiving "nice notes" via mail – the old
fashioned type of PR. Nice notes are congratulations and
thank you letters. When received they maybe kept in a folder
– in your file cabinet and inbox. I started my first “Nice
Notes” folder in 1973 when I started receiving thank you
letters as part of my first Wall Street job. I still have
that folder and now have an email “Nice Notes” folder, too.

Send nice notes to your current and potential clients. Do
you review the business sections of your local newspaper or
business journal for opportunities to “meet” your ideal
clients, get known, and remembered, for your thoughtfulness?
Will you now?

The format you choose to send your nice note is up to you.
Choose postcards, stationary, note cards, cards you make –
they can all be part of your PR. One thing though, make sure
that the note is personalized and hand written is good! My
favorite cards to send out are postcards I create from
scenic pictures I take when I drive across the country, and
cards I “stamp”. For greeting cards I use MS Publisher,
however, Word and specialized greeting card templates are
available for purchase.

According to “How To Say It” by Roasalie Maggio, p. 100
“don’t make your congratulatory note do double duty: save
for another day any questions, information, sales messages,
or work matters that aren’t relevant to the good news at
hand. (Exception: personal letters accompanying birthday
congratulations.)” To that I’d add, don’t even add your
business card to the card. You can send that as a follow up.

Brenda Kury of Synergy Resource Solutions, Inc.
http://www.countgrass.com recently sent me another great
public relations letter – a thank you card. On the front of
the card, it has her companies name, then a big “Thank You”,
then the address phone number and web site for her company.
She hand writes her note. It’s the type of card you want to
hang up on the wall when you receive it (a little extra
PR?). I used Synergy Resource Solutions format to create my
own greeting cards, too. Below are ten ideas of
congratulatory cards you can create. So go buy those extra
stamps!

1. Congratulations on your recent business opening
2. Congratulations on your recent move to
3. Congratulations on your membership into
4. Congratulations on your _____ article in
5. Congratulations on your recent promotion to
6. Congratulations on your recent expansion into
7. Congratulations on your award
8. Congratulations on such a successful year
9. Congratulations on achieving your __th year in business
10. Congratulations on your ____ (hey - it's your turn to
fill in the blank)

Be Focused in Every Moment

When we talk of getting focused this means specifically
to see what captures our undivided time, attention and
energy. Choosing what you're going to focus on overall
imparts clarity. Does this mean you're only going to
focus on these specific things? Not at all.

This is a trap some people fall into and so they become
too focused, to the exclusion of the rest of their life.
I suspect this stops some people focusing because
they've seen others who are too focused so they feel
they'd be overwhelmed by the intensity of it.

Some people are very work-focused to an unhealthy
degree. There are others who, for instance, with a new
relationship, become so focused that everything else in
their life is pushed to one side. This type of focus is
too narrow. You need to keep your perspective. There's
also another element to being focused and that's about
being focused in the moment. Whatever you focus on,
there are many other things going on in your life. What
you're focusing on isn't the only thing. Although
focused, you need to encompass all areas of your life
and strike a balance. You can be totally work focused at
work, but at other times be totally focused elsewhere,
whether that's relationships or fun etc. I suggest you
should be 100% focused on whatever you're doing.

It's very stressful to think about things other than
those you're doing at this particular moment. You'll
feel pulled in different directions and anxious, unable
to give your full attention. But without your full
attention, what you're currently doing probably isn't
being done well, is ineffective and is unlikely to
produce quick results. You've probably wasted quite a
bit of time.

Be focused on the thing you're doing at the moment,
whatever is right in front of you. If you're eating,
don't watch TV at the same time. If you're having a
conversation, concentrate totally, listen and respond.
If you're not fully focused, you're probably not
listening well. This may mean that the other person
doesn't feel heard, feels frustrated with you and
misunderstandings are created. I'm sure you can
imagine how ineffective all this is and the problems
which may ensue. However, if you had focused on the
conversation it might have taken less time, led to a
greater understanding and left no unresolved issues.

Being focused means thinking, doing and being with one
thing at a time. Give it your full attention rather
than half-heartedly, whilst thinking of other things.
Whatever it is, be fully engrossed in it. If you
notice that when you try to focus on one thing there
are many other things running through your mind, you
need to set up a structure to handle this.

Being focused is about who you are as a person, not
just what you do.  It's not just  focusing at work;
it's about the whole of you being focused and this
will impact all areas of your life. It takes practice
but what better time than now to start practising?
To practise being focused, pick a specific activity
and choose to be focused. Be with all of the sounds,
thoughts, feelings, smells and whatever else is going
on. Perhaps pick an activity like washing up,
building a tower of children's bricks, a conversation
or your breathing and be totally focused. At first
you may find your attention wandering all over the
place. This is natural and just shows how difficult
being focused really is. Keep practising; the more
focused you are when washing up, the more focused
you're likely to be at work.

Last Ditch Money to Stop a Home Loan Foreclosure

Are you facing the prospect of losing your home in a bank
foreclosure? Many who are experiencing a temporary financial
squeeze will withdraw cash out of their IRA in order to save
their home. However, getting a loan from your retirement
account may be a smarter way to go than taking an IRA early
distribution.

As with most people your home and retirement savings probably
represent the bulk of your available assets. However,
withdrawing money from your retirement accounts, even if it’s to
protect against a foreclosure, will cause you to lose a big part
of your retirement money to taxes. A better strategy is to take
money out of your retirement funds by way of a 401k loan. A loan
from a 401(k) doesn’t trigger any distribution taxes and avoids
the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty, as long as you repay
the loan.

When you have a job you generally can get a loan from your
employer’s 401k plan. But once you leave or lose your job, as a
rule, you can no longer keep your 401k loan or borrow from the
plan.

You may, however, be able to start your own individual 401k
plan, called a Solo 401k or Self-employed 401k, under new tax
laws that became effective in 2002. The paperwork to set up a
Self-Employed 401k is easy. You can also transfer any of your
IRAs, 401k, SEP plan or other qualified retirement funds to your
Self-Employed 401k plan. Most Self-Employed 401k plans allow
you to borrow up to 50 percent of your account balance all the
way up to $50,000. The 401k loan is tax-free and penalty free.

Home loans in foreclosure hit a record high in the fourth
quarter of 2002. Experts predict this negative trend to
continue until the problems of a weak economy, anemic job
market, and rising property taxes are addressed. Small business
owners and contract freelancers are especially vulnerable to
economic slumps. The small business owner unable to get a bank
loan often has to rely on his own savings to meet cash flow
shortages.

The Self-Employed 401k is a qualified retirement plan that can
be set up by anyone who has a part-time or full-time business.
This retirement plan is similar to 401k plans of large
companies. The difference is that the Self-Employed 401k is
designed for an individual and as such is less complicated and
less costly to maintain. Any person with a business with no
employees can set up a Self-Employed 401k plan.

The cost and features of Self-Employed 401k plans will vary
depending on the plan vendor. A typical plan cost less than $200
a year to maintain and allow loans with terms of 5 years or more
at an interest rate close to prime rate. The good part is that
all of your loan payments including the interest go back to your
401k account. Take caution, however, because not paying your
401k loan on time will trigger IRS tax consequences as if your
loan was a taxable distribution.

CORRECTION: Do's and Don't's of Relationship
Copyright © 2003, Ernest Quansah
Soul-Mate Infoserve
http://www.soulmateinfoserve.com

Do’s are what enhances relationships. Don’ts are what kill
relationships. Our surrounding is made up of different people
from different backgrounds. Our upbringing, past dating and
relationship experiences, etc. all mold our thinking. Even the
consequences from our own relationship choices may mold our
thinking. As a result, you may develop positive or negatives
characteristics from your past relationship experiences. Hence
the experiences will become characteristics you will take into
the next relationship. So in effect, whether your relationships
is going to work or not is predetermined. It all depends on
the characteristics you choose to take with you into your
relationship. I say this for several reasons. One reason is all
human being are capable of changing. As an adult you have a
choice in what characteristic you wish to sustain. It is safe to
say how you treat your relationship is a choice you make.

Assuming your last relationship was a bad experience; learn not
to take that experience into your next relationship. There is a
good reason for that. If you want to find that special someone,
it is best to introduce positive characteristics into your dating
practices. Here is why. The human heart does several things. One
of the things it does is it acts as your guide. Your heart,
believe it or not is your compass if you wish to be lead to your
soulmate.

Some relationship experts refer to the heart as spirit, inner
guide, conscience and so forth. The true mission of your
conscience is to direct and teach truth. When you endeavor to
doing things that are right you are in effect following your
conscience dictates. Characteristics and habits of those who
follow directions from their conscience to acquire meaningful
relationships are such as: integrity, harmony, temperance,
patience, thankfulness, honesty, joy, love, goodness,
forgiveness, humility, respect, trust, understanding etc. I call
these characteristics Do’s of relationships. They are qualities
that enhance love between man and woman. These qualities
predetermine how you will treat your lover. Further more your
characteristics also tell your love interest what kind of man or
woman you are. Those who are authorities in relationships
discovered the collapse of most relationships and marriages are
attributed to selfishness. For example, the very moment you
decide to enter a relationship just for what you want, you have
pre-programmed the relationship to fail. Why? Because your
intention is not about sharing your heart with another person
but to get what you want. Try and have a relationship that is
not me, me, me relationship. This way you will have a greater
chance of succeeding. What I am sharing with you has been
researched and proven to be one of the best ways to find your
Mr. or Mrs. Right.

Relationships are about two people. Take into consideration
your partners feelings as well as yours. When you decide to
enter a relationship with positive characteristics you have
pre-programmed your relationship to work. Consider the words
that represent positive characteristics. Do you notice how they
also represent real love? Real love is absolutely needed in
relationships. It helps prevent you from emotionally injuring
your partner. The best part of it is you will not create a
person who becomes male or female basher in case the relationship
turns out to be temporal.

Fact, if you follow your conscience or inner guide you will be
directed away from sparking a dead end relationship. You will be
directed to find your soulmate. Human beings were not created to
be alone. Neither are we here to have failed relationships. In
case you are asking your self, what if I go into a relationship
with positive qualities and it does not work? The answer to that
is simple. Remember relationships take two people. You may have
good intentions before interring a relationship but your love
interest may not. In the event that you missed the directions
from your conscience, it is okay. Remember this saying? If at
first you don’t succeed try again. When you try something and it
does not work, there is the likelihood that next time you will
use a different approach. Changing you approach actually puts you
in a better position to succeed next time around provided you do
not become discourage by giving up. It is very critical you use
methods that are proven to work. Finding that special someone or
your soulmate is actually easier than you thought. I can assure
you of that. There are fact base and proven methods you can use
to find your soulmate. Never ever allow your self to be part of
those who claim finding a perfect companion is hard. They are
people who have given up and want you to become a quitter just
like them. Create a mindset that attracts success. Negative
thoughts and discouragement leads to failure. Positive thinking
attracts success.

Negative characteristics are such as: vindictiveness, discord,
contention, dishonesty, pride, hate, faultfinding, envy, gossip,
disrespect, lies, unforgiving, impatience, discouragement,
selfishness etc. These negatives characteristics are what I call
Don’ts of relationships. They are relationship and marriage
killers. They put strain on your relationship and love life. If
you are serious about finding that special someone listen and
follow your inner guide. Avoid taking negative characteristics
into relationship. As a writer and relationship advisor, I try to
help my readers by providing free advice on my Website. The site
also contains the most powerful relationship secrets ever
revealed in an e-book. Depending on researched and proven facts
will help you find that special someone. Even bringing out the
best in your dates contribute to helping you succeed. Improve
your chances of success by adopting and introduce characteristics
that will help enhance your relationship.

To get started, I suggest drawing a straight line on a piece of
paper. Above the line you may list the positive words at the
beginning of this article. Bellow the line list the negative
words that represents negative characteristics. You may choose
to include your own words if needed. Now transform the words
into action in your mind. Pretend there are two people on either
side of you. One is treating you in a matter that represents the
words above the line. The second person is treating you in ways
that represent the words bellow the line. Assess your feelings
as to how you are being treated the two imaginary people.
Eliminate the negative words from your mind. From then on try
and follow your inner guide accompanied by the positive words
that illustrates positive characteristics. Use it to enhance
your relationship, love life or dating habits. Remember if you
want relationship that works, if you want to find your soulmate,
you must make choices that will lead you to what you are looking
for. Your choice of thoughts and actions will achieve their
appropriate results. Good luck.

Finding Your Ideal Member: A Process for
          Non-Profit Organizations

When you know who your ideal member is, you’ll spend your
time and energy directly on the individuals who will want to
join your organization! Makes sense, doesn’t it?

One tool very important tool to help you market to your
ideal member is called your “Ideal Member Profile.”
Designing this profile is a great exercise for non-profit
organizations.

To make sure that you know who your ideal member is, create
a survey for your current membership to complete. Then
before you finalize your profile, ask others who you’ve told
about the organization to tell you who they think your ideal
member might be. Don’t forget to ask new members why they
joined. I bet you’ll learn a lot!

Once your profile is completed, use it when evaluating a new
marketing tool. Asks yourself…
· Is this something my ideal member would need, enjoy or
purchase?
· Will this attract my ideal member to this organization?

If the answer is no, then skip this idea, and save yourself
time and money.

Things you can do with your Ideal Member Profile:
1. Give a copy to all your friends, family, employees or
    contractors.
2. Find a terrific frame for it and hang it on your office
    wall.
3. Use it on your Web site.
4. Carry a copy as a reminder.
5. Create an affirmation (special type of positive
    statement: http://www.io.com/~rga/affirm.html ) that will
help you to attract your ideal member.
6. Review your ideal member statement or list every six
months as part of your overall business plan.

Over time, your Ideal Member Profile will change as your
organization evolves. To be prepared for such
re-evaluations, take note of who you are really attracting
to your organization: who is not coming back and why, who is
staying, and who is subscribing to your newsletters. Keep
track of these things over time, analyze the patterns you
see and use the information to your best advantage when
deciding on, and marketing to, your ideal member.

Step 1: Answer these “Ideal Member Questions”

If you are completing the area below using Word 2000, put
your cursor in the gray shaded area, which will expand as
you type. If you print this page, you’ll have enough space
to write your answers in the areas provided.

1. Age, gender, sexual preference, religion and whatever
    demographics fit.
2. What attributes do they posses? (Passion, consistency,
    committed)
3. What are they passionate about?
4. Where do they live? Where do they work?
5. What types of people, places or things do they like?
6. How do they learn and where do they like to go to learn?
7. What do they read? When do they read it? Where do they
    read?
8. What shops, Web sites, etc. do they purchase products from?
9. What meetings, groups, and classes do they attend?
10. What type of people are you attracting to your organization?
11. Add the answers to other questions you determine are
     important here.

Step 2: The Format

Once you have the answers to “Step 1”, the 2nd part of
this process is to create an Ideal Member Statement.

1. Take everything from above and remove all duplication.
2. Design a 3-sentence description (less if possible) about
your Ideal Member. Consider age, where they live, why
they want to join, and what things they enjoy.
3. Create a list of places where you’ll find your ideal client.
4. Get to work on creating your marketing plan.

The Top 10 Easy Ezine Development and Promotion Tips

Either do it right or don't do it at all Don't create an
ezine just because you're reading or seeing that others are
creating them. While ezines can be a way to market your
business, they are also time consuming. Remember to always
market your business while keeping your integrity intact.

Tell them and then do it Create a schedule for your ezine
and stick to it. If you'll be providing additional mailings
- such as I do - for important Internet announcements,
monthly specials, etc. tell people. On your web site, in any
advertising, and then include the information in the welcome
letters, too. At a minimum, send out a message to your
readers at least monthly.

Don't use BCC In 1995 or so, most email programs added "BCC"
as a way to send email. BCC is short for blind carbon copy
or blind courtesy copy if you have never placed a piece of
carbon paper between two sheets of regular paper. Using BCC,
email is distributed to "undisclosed recipients" and you can
see why it was the way to send out ezines. However, now if
you use it for sending more than 20-40 emails at a time, you
can get your email account closed. Why? BCC is the common
email choice of s-pammers and your email company watches out
for "batches" of BCCs.

Do use double opt-in Opt-in provides your ezine readers with
the option of subscribing either at your web site or via
email. The system also may send a subscriber an email
letting them know that they subscribed (just in case someone
else subscribed them). It is better is to use a double
opt-in system sends an email to a subscriber requesting that
they re-confirm their subscription.

Design It Your Way Of course, you want to reach your ideal
clients, however, more isn't necessarily better. Create an
ezine you can consistently produce and one your readers will
consistently read.

Who is your ideal reader? Knowing who your ideal reader is,
helps you determine the best places to market your
newsletter and process saves you time and money in the
process. Use this Word 2000 document to assist you
http://coachmaria.com/documents/idealclient.doc

Low cost ezine hosting If you have more than one ezine, you
know how expensive monthly ezine hosting services can be. An
inexpensive program I recommend for do it yourselfers is
MOJO http://mojo.skazat.com/ It allows you (or your Virtual
Assistant) to create as many ezines as you'd like, on your
server, using one control panel. If you don't like touching
your hosting server, ask me for my programmer
recommendations.

The box vs. the link In an unscientific experiment I
conducted last year my research showed that people prefer to
add their email addresses to subscription boxes than to
click a link to send you the same information. Create
informative ezine subscription boxes and post them
throughout your web site.

Don't bother using these Members of yahoogroups,
smartgroups, topica, cool list and other no-cost (with ad)
ezine hosting program, offer a large number of elists
especially for ezine publishers. They are places you

They are places you
advertise your ezine and take it from me, are not worth the
trouble signing up for or using.

Easy way to add ezine subscribers Gain ezine subscribers, in
person, with permission based forms. Design postcards, index
card or add an area to your evaluation sheet providing the
name and content of your ezine, how often they'll receive
it, and request at least their full name and email address.

Fox News asked the more important question of the day. They
asked what Harry Potter has over Hillary Rodham-Clinton in
the draw at bookstores in America.

My wife and I contemplated this question, and this is what we
came up with:

  1. The Harry Potter books are fiction and are on the fiction
shelf at the bookstore. Hillary's book is fiction but is
on the non-fiction shelf at the bookstore.
  2. Harry is interesting. Hillary is not.
  3. Millions of people love Harry. Millions of people do not
     love Hillary.
  4. Harry is a wizard. Hillary is a witch.
  5. Harry is all of that. Hillary just thinks she is.
  6. Harry has a wand. Hillary has Bill.
  7. England is proud to call Harry their own. Arkansas is glad
     Hillary is in New York.
  8. Everyday Americans want Harry to stay in America. Everyday
Americans would be glad if Hillary left America.
  9. With Harry's book, you anticipate every word until the end.
With Hillary's book, you just pray that it will end.
10. All of the demons in Harry's world are fictitious.

THE REALITIES OF AN INTERNET BUSINESS

Millions of people are still coming online each year, and many
of those people come to the Internet with dreams of making their
financial dreams come true.

The truth is that building a website to sell products and
services is not the easiest way to make a living online. A lot
of specific knowledge or money will be required to be successful
with a standard website.

You must acquire skills --- or pay someone who already
possesses those skills --- in the following areas:

· Graphic design
· Copywriting
· HTML design
· Perl or PHP programming
· Database programming
· Marketing research
· Promotions

When this is understood, most people throw their hands up in
frustration and walk away from their entrepreneurial desires.

Maybe cash is the problem; maybe the desire is just lacking.

If you have reached this point yourself let me offer one piece
of advice...

DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR DREAMS JUST YET

More people than I can count are making a successful living
online, and none of them own their own website or send a single
commercial email to anyone.

How is this possible?

Two words, "Ebay auctions."

EBAY MAKES IT EASY

Ebay covers all of the difficult technical issues. And more
importantly, Ebay already has floods of visitors eager to
purchase your wares.

Ebay has provided everything you need to operate a successful
business online with three exceptions:

1. Products to sell
2. Time to list the products in the Ebay database
3. Cash to acquire the products

CHOOSING THE KINDS OF PRODUCTS

Before choosing your products, you should ask yourself what you
enjoy the most. You may enjoy cats, NASCAR or even antiques.
You should select products consistent with what you enjoy for
two reasons.

First, you bring to your presentation a real appreciation for
the products your are offering.

Secondly, a job you hate is one you will quit. A job you enjoy
doing will be one that you will want to keep forever. If you
are starting your own business, the hope is that you will be
doing it for a very long time.

I personally know people who have generated a nice living on
Ebay selling cat-related items, NASCAR memorabilia and antiques.

FINDING THE ACTUAL PRODUCTS TO SELL

I recommend against diving in and spending thousands of dollars
buying products that you may or may not be able to sell.

A drop-shipper is a middleman who is willing to permit you to
buy an individual product, and then they will put your business
name on the return address of the product package and handle
the actual delivery for you.

By utilizing a drop-shipper, you can speed product delivery to
the client without risking your own cash to keep a product in
inventory.

If you are lost as to how to find a drop-shipper, consider
subscribing to the drop-shippers directory:

  http://thePhantomWriters.com/drop-shippers_directory.html

Through this site, you can get all of the information you need
to find drop-shippers from which you can order over 500,000
products from over 1,000 brand names.

LEARNING TO LIST YOUR PRODUCTS AT EBAY

Learning to use Ebay is pretty easy and straightforward. Ebay
has put forward a lot of effort to help people to become
successful. For example, Ebay has an entire area of their site
devoted to the online entrepreneur.

To get an overview of all of the services and tools that Ebay
provides to sellers, you may visit:

  http://pages.ebay.com/services/index.html

Ebay also delivers courses and strategies to help you to be
more successful:

  http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/index.html

THE IMPORTANCE OF CASH FLOW TO YOUR SUCCESS

Ebay provides tools for both buyers and sellers to rate one
another. The speed of delivery is one of the most important
factors that sellers are rated on. By providing quick delivery,
your buyers will give you a good rating --- and more shoppers
will bid on your products.

Ebay recently purchased PayPal.com to help facilitate purchases
for their buyers and sellers, and they have integrated the two
systems together.

Unfortunately, getting the money from your PayPal account to
your personal account generally takes four days. Even with a
merchant account, the time gap is nearly the same. This time gap
expands the turn-around between the transaction and delivery of
the product unless you take action to speed the process.

If you were doing high volume, you would want to minimize the
handling of a transaction to reduce the chance for a foul-up
and to increase your ratings within the Ebay system.

But how can this be accomplished?

MANAGING CASH FLOW

While you could rely upon credit cards to get the job done, it
is not something I would recommend. Paying credit card interest
rates to process your customer's purchase, is an unnecessary
burden.

Instead, put a sum of money into a dedicated bank account with
a debit card attached to it. When you verify a transaction has
been credited to your PayPal account, then use your debit card
to immediately process the order with your drop-shipper.

But, how can you do it this way on a tight budget?

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO THE RESCUE

Let me ask you this. Do you have a 401(k) account?

Experts advise that you not touch your retirement savings for
anything other than retirement income. That is good advice.
Fortunately, it is possible under special circumstances to
acquire loans against your 401(k) accounts.

Beginning in 2002, even the self-employed small business owner
with no employees could open his or her own 401(k), called a
solo-owner 401(k), and borrow from it just as employees with
big companies can.

Weigh this option against the others available to you. It only
makes sense to take out a loan rather than to take a hit in
heavy taxes and penalties for drawing your retirement money
early. Seriously, consider taking advantage of our historically
low interest rates to meet your cash flow needs.

401(k), please visit:

IN CONCLUSION

It is wise to choose your new business venture based on a model
that has proven itself over the long-term. Ebay has been proving
its concept since 1995; helping thousands of people build a
successful and very profitable business.

The time to act is now. Choose the product line that will give
you the most satisfaction and then get busy. Your success awaits
you.

Where is your business within the business cycle?

What's the saying, something like... you can't get where you
want to go if you don't know where you're going. Every
business starts and ends somewhere. First it's an idea and it
may stay at this place for a short time or many years. Then it
develops into a start-up that takes where you build the critical
strong business foundation.

If you are stuck or on a downward spiral then it's time to
re-evaluating where you are and where you expect to be
in 1, 3, 5, and 10 years. If you want to move ahead quicker,
take a look at what it is you need to get "there". Use the
list below to help you realign yourself and get the help
you need to get you to the next level and beyond.

It's An Idea

-- Learn how to accomplish what you want to accomplish.
-- Read the books that are known to help my clients.
-- Get "buy-in" from your family.
-- Start the process of transitioning between executive and
         business owner.
  -- Hire a mentor coach.
-- Who can you partner with?

Building A Strong Business Foundation
  -- Getting licenses.
  -- Choosing a structure.
-- Create a "One Page Business Plan" (TM Jim Horan).
-- Business development and plans specific to gain funding.
  -- Develop vision/mission statement.
  -- Design an operations manual.
-- Start interviewing people you'll be hiring as contractors.
-- Locating supply, telephone, banking services, etc..

Taking Off - Marketing
-- Create and implement a marketing plan based on integrity.
-- Design your ideal client profile.
-- Build and promote an online or off line newsletter.
  -- Increase sales or productivity.
  -- Start your Internet presence.
  -- Establish a community presence
-- Attract more business to you.
  -- Establishing a community presence.

Operating and Re-evaluating?
  -- Monthly performance reviews.
  -- Quarterly business plan review.
  -- Client surveys.
-- Look at ways to reenergize your business.
-- Where can expenses be reduced?
-- Design a quality assurance process.
-- Develop systems to work more efficiently.
-- Add or re-evaluate technology and back up systems
-- Learn how to respond to change more quickly.
-- Update the operations manual procedures.
  -- Create reserves.
-- Get your business ready to sell.
-- Dealing with employee moral and problems.

Where must you take more risks to help your
business get to the next level? Are you ready?

The actual life of a laptop battery will vary with computer
usage habits. For most users, it is not uncommon to experience
differences in battery life, of anywhere from just under one
hour to over two hours in each sitting. If you are experiencing
shorter battery life cycles, say 10 to 15 minutes, it may not
yet be time to order that new battery.

There are several factors to take into consideration when
determining if the time has come to replace your battery. This
information may also apply to that new battery that you have
recently purchased, that has been giving you fits. The two
primary things to consider when troubleshooting battery problems
is Usage Habits and Battery Memory. We will cover both in their
complexities in just a moment, but first, let us take a look at
what you should expect from your battery's life cycle.

NiMH batteries usually last 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
LiION batteries usually last 2.0 to 3.0 hours.

These are average results and the results will vary greatly
depending on your system's conservation settings, the temperature
of the room and the climate that you are operating your computer
in. As a general rule, your Lithium Ion battery will last much
longer than your standard Nickel Metal Hydride battery.

Now let's take a look at the various usage habits to consider
when troubleshooting your laptop's battery. These processes are
very similar to the way that your portable stereo uses batteries
.. just think how much faster your stereo eats batteries when you
are playing the CD or the tape deck, as opposed to when you are
just playing the radio.

The more you use physical devices --- which require more
electricity to operate --- the more of the battery's power you
can expect to consume. The devices that create a larger power
drain are the hard drive, the floppy drive and the CD-ROM.

When the computer is able to use its physical memory resources
to store information, the computer will use less of the battery's
power, since the process is mostly electrical in nature. However,
when the processes you are using exhaust the physical memory
resources available to your system, the system will turn to
virtual memory to continue the process at hand. Virtual Memory is
designed to extend system memory resources by building a memory
swap file on the hard drive, and then transfer needed information
between the hard drive and the physical memory as required. Since
the hard drive is a electricity hog, the use of virtual memory
becomes an electricity hog by proxy.

Two other processes that engage virtual memory on your computer
are computational programs and the calculation processes used by
spreadsheet applications and database programs. Both of these
items engage the processor to a greater degree as well, which in
itself is a consumer of electricity. Because they both compute
and calculate large quantities of information, they will also
increase the amount of electricity that your laptop will consume.

Other physical devices that cannot be left out of this discussion
are audio and display devices. As far as audio devices are
concerned, speakers require electricity to run and the software
that is responsible for producing the sound does so by processing
information. The display panel consumes electricity as well. In
fact, the brighter the screen appears, the more electricity that
it is consuming. You may turn down the brightness on the screen,
thereby conserving more electricity than you may have considered
possible. And when considering the battery drain caused by video
devices, don't forget the effect that graphics programs will have
on your system. Video applications can have an intense effect on
your electrical needs, due to its usage of computation,
calculations and virtual memory.

Battery Memory is an odd little creature. The concept of battery
memory is reminiscent of Pavlovian Conditioning. Do you remember
the story about Pavlov and his dogs? Pavlov would serve his dogs
food and when they realized it was dinner time, he would ring a
bell. After some time of conditioning his dogs, all he would have
to do to get the dogs to salivate, was to ring the bell. Battery
Memory is a lot like that.

Battery memory is where the battery becomes conditioned to run
for less time than it is designed to run. Say for example, you
run your computer on battery for an hour and then you plug it
back in to let it recharge. The battery will become conditioned
to run only an hour before it runs out of juice.

To correct Battery Memory problems, you must completely drain
the battery and recharge it. To completely drain your battery,
you must go into your Windows Control Panel and select Power.
Then you must turn Power Management Off. Next, you must go into
your BIOS and make sure that if there is a power management
setting there, that you turn it off as well. In most cases, once
you are inside the BIOS, you will highlight Power Management and
press Enter. Then locate the item Hibernation at Critical
Battery, and by using the Minus sign, change the setting to Off.
Once these steps have been completed, then use your Escape key
to return to the top level menu, and select Save Settings and
Exit.

Once you have completed turning off the power management in both
the BIOS and the Operating System, you must unplug the computer,
turn the computer on and let it run until it completely runs out
of electricity. Then you should charge the battery for 12 hours.
At the end of the charging cycle, then run the computer again
until the battery is dead, and then charge the battery for 12
more hours. You should repeat this process four times, before
returning the computer to its original power management settings.

As far as battery usage goes, it is recommended that you should
use the battery once every two weeks, and keep the battery in the
system so that the AC adapter can keep the battery charged at all
times. It is also recommended that if you don't use the battery
for more than two weeks, you should completely discharge the
battery and store it at room temperature.
