(I'm not sure if this is a repeat of part of my previous reply - my
fingers are not very accurate and I either send or deleted my first
attempt!)
In reading various books and other information about the PCC gravity
railroad, I came across a reference to "Tunnel No.2" which the author
thought was in the area of Plane 6, but on the light track across the
valley. He also indicated that this second tunnel, if it did exist,
was probably daylighted soon after construction. There was a picture
of a fairly deep, narrow cut accompanying the paragraph, supposidly
showing the location.
We have recently finished an addition to our house for my wife's and
my book collections, and I can't find my gravity railroad material
to back up my memory of what I read years ago. It might be
interesting if you kept an eye out for any reference to a second
tunnel, although I agree with the author that at best it was very
short lived if it existed at all.
PS
By way of quick introduction, my name is Paul and I am new to the
group. I grew up in Scranton with an insatiable interest in
railroads and mines that continues to grow. This group has provied
me with a connection to those days, and dusted off Many old
memories. Hopefully, some of my information will be of use to other
members of the group, once I find it!
Until leaving in the early 1970's (Graduated Technical HS 1971), I
spent many hours climbing over the PCC path, including pilgrimages to
the 'real' tunnel and the stone arch bridge off of Moosic Lake Road,
Rte 247. (Does the bridge still exist? If I remember correctly it
was a white, stone arch bridge about 50' long, off on the South or
tunnel side of Rte 247 by about 1/4 mile.)
