Re: [HE_Legacy_Fundraising] How to guides

Dear Zofia

I agree, that every situation is different, but if you are talking about colleagues taking a telephone call in your absence, I can understand how some might panic if they are not used to discussing legacies, as we have encountered that here. We had a presentation about legacies recently and talked about some phrases which people might consider using (and could try out in front of a mirror when they're on their own!). The idea being obviously, if you don't feel comfortable saying it, it won't come over very well. Here are some ideas discussed (apologies for the 'soundbite' kind of presentation - trying to do it in a rush). Some are more applicable in conversation, others on paper or in an email. Some good, some not so good.

Which would you prefer to say?
  • Bequest in your Will
  • Legacy in your Will
  • Gift in your Will
  • Remember us in your Will
  • After you have provided for your own family and friends perhaps you would be kind enough to consider Oxford University in your Will?
  • Tell me more about why you first supported us? (To understand their motivations if meeting them at an event for the first time
For major donors when you know them well
  • How do you feel about a gift in your Will to the University of Oxford? Or
  • We fully understand that a gift in your Will is a private matter but we are really keen to avoid intruding on your privacy. How do you feel about a legacy to the University of Oxford?
Potential questions asked of you
  • Can I leave a legacy for the future of the project I funded (or my college)?
  • Cash or percentage – which is best?
  • I would like Oxford University to be one of my Executors. Is this possible?
  • I would like a permanent X in my name

I would be interested to know more about the "how to" leaflets that you have already created. Perhaps you would be kind enough to share them with us at our next meeting in the Open University in Feb 09?

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes

Jane

[HE_Legacy_Fundraising] How to guides

Dear All,

I've had a request from my team to put together a series of how to's
for Legacy Fundraising, in the event I am not here. All very simple
apart from one they have requested which is:

'How to discuss a bequest'

Am I alone in feeling this is difficult to create as all discussion
will be very different? Or has anyone done anything similar for their
colleagues?

I would welcome you thoughts

Best wishes from Liverpool

Zofia
