I hope you all had a great meeting in
Newcastle last week – I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to join you. Just wondered if anyone is planning to produce notes from the meeting? I, for one, would be really grateful.
I was wondering whether anyone has a pledger who has made a gift in a will to their institution with reference to a gift agreement?
I have a supporter who wants to do something quite specific with his legacy and is likely to want to review the exact purpose at regular intervals in the future to ensure that it is still feasible. I was wondering whether anyone has come across this and resolved
it in a way that means the actual will doesn’t need to be directly amended at each review?
The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England & Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302).
Enclosed is the updated meeting for our schedule for Thursday. Please report to the reception of King's Gate, which is our new building on Barass Bridge, close to the Haymarket Metro Station.
If you are getting a cab from the station, ask to be dropped near the Union Society on Kings Road. You can also get a Metro train from the Station to the Haymarket (2 stops). If you do get stuck, my number is 0191 222 6072.
Look forward to catching up and don't worry it is very easy to find!

I have been liaising with an executor of a will for Ł100k which
is just about to come to fruition (through house sale of the deceased which
will then release the money). He has now told me that this was left in the
will as a ‘trust’ and wants me to recommend one or two trustees from the
University to handle this. I have never dealt with this situation before as my
experience to date has been that the solicitor or legator simply forwards the
cheque and we then administer it from there (once the terms are agreed etc).
Any advice on how setting up a trust/dealing with a trust is
different and what I need to do in order to start the ball rolling this end will
be most appreciated. I asked Richard Radcliffe and he said it can be quite
complicated so I should seek legal advice from the University’s legal team but that
we may also need to pay for independent legal advice. The solicitor here does
not seem familiar at all with this situation, however, so I’m hoping someone
out there is!!
Thanks in advance for any help or info,
Best wishes

I am so sorry, I am not going to be able to make next week’s meeting, things have conspired against me and it’s just not going to work
out. If anyone is willing to produce notes from the meeting I, for one, would be really grateful.
Hope you enjoy the day, I know it will be useful – just sorry I won’t be with you.

I really loved Bristol's recent legacy advert in their alumni magazine as was a real inspiration for our own advert which has just gone to print. It was really simply and text light but with a prominent photograph. It was about giving to halls and featured a great archive photo but the language was particularly nostalgia-inducing for me!! Might be worth asking Laura for a digital copy if she has one handy??

Hi folks, Deadline looming for our alumni mag and scratching our heads trying to come up with an effective legacy ad. Anyone willing to share thoughts or ideas on an ad which has been particularly effective? We've used photos of scholarship students, nice quotes, medical researchers etc but I'm no ad expert. Ta. Jo (Uni of Edinburgh)
I’d really appreciate any feedback as we are also looking to put together an ad for our next mag early next year.
Thanks
Helen

Karen, Helen and Jo- Thank you for your replies to my email
concerning the use of pledger case studies in my forthcoming brochure. Having read
your comments I have now calmed down slightly and decided to re-adjust my print
run and send the brochures to a smaller group than I had originally planned to.
If this 1st run is unsuccessful then I will look
at revising the brochure to include more variety within the studies (ie. Profiles
of beneficiaries or legators) however I’m pretty happy with the other
aspects of the brochure and I think the case studies are interesting (and not
overtly smug) so I’m not unduly worried. In addition to this we mailed our
existing version to a focus group and it was very well received by them.
Fingers crossed!
Ben
PS- Jo- Yes I will be attending the Institute of Fundraising
conference in December. See you there.
We’d like to hear from
you if you’d like to be featured in the next issue of your alumni
magazine. Submit a classnote at www.imperial.ac.uk/alumni/classnotes.

Hi Jo
1)US mailings. We usually send
out our US DM in mid to late October with good results. We follow up letters
via the Telethon too.
2)The IoF annual conference is
a good all rounder. Good if you’ve never attended a legacy conference. It
focuses on the voluntary sector, however, but you can still apply some of the
practice and ideas to alumni legacy fundraising.

Hi everyone,
Two questions;
1. Mailing dates - I'm thinking about a mailshot to US prospects before end of
this year to tie in with their fiscal year end and also include a line about
donations of IRA to Uni. Has anyone done this and was it worthwhile? On UK
mailings, I was thinking springtime next year but in your experience, have you
found better or worse time for mailings (other than Christmas which is
obviously not good).
2. Institute of Fundraising is running a Legacies conference on 15 December.
Has anyone been on this before? Would you recommend it? It's pitched at those
relatively new to legacies but the speakers are all from big name charities so
I wondered if it would be worthwhile to glean some tips from voluntary sector.
CASE is also running a legacies day but I reckon our day on 26th November will
be much better and it's free other than travel!!!
By the way Ben, I agree with Karen at the OU re. using case studies. I've
always thought it was a stronger ask coming from a pledger rather than me as a
fundraiser but perhaps we can discuss? Is this in the voluntary sector or
education as I think the responses would be different.
Thoughts on my two questions gratefully received. By the way, is it grey
everywhere today or is it just Edinburgh?
