Hello Randall:

While I can't claim to be an "expert" in these things and I certainly
wouldn't want to consider anything I did "benchmarking", but I did work at
an employer where departmental budgeting became a bit of a game.
Departments had "copy cards" so they could each be charged for their use of
copies and other fine things.

After this budgeting process began I started keeping records. If I made
copies, I charged each department for the number of copies I made that were
for their department's use. When I did training I charged each department
a proportionate amount for the time and materials. When I did recruiting
each department was charged based upon the number of positions I had to
fill against the total time spent on recruiting. An unemployment hearing?
Against the department whose ex employee I was going to the hearing for. Etc.

In actuality, although I felt that the time detailing these things was
counter productive in terms of getting my mission accomplished, it did open
up some eyes when one department, for instance, had higher turnover and
therefore had higher recruiting costs or time spent on UI hearings. Or a
greater need for disciplinary advice etc.

I didn't like it; but, as I said, it had some value.

Cindy,

I think their is nothing wrong in letting it be known that you are new to
the management game. I would approach each of the staff individually and
ask them what expectations they have. What do they want from you as a
supervisor, how do they wish to provide updates on their work etc. This
then takes into account different working styles of individuals. You will
undoubtly have your own way of running the show but at least from the start
you get a clear idea of where your staff are coming from.

I need some help here folks. I work in Toronto. Smoking is banned by law
in all work places except for "separately enclosed and ventilated smoke
rooms". These rooms must have their mechanical and ventilation systems
approved by the Toronto Board of Health before they can be used as such.
As well our company policy that is well posted states smoking is strictly
forbidden on company premises.

I have seen two very senior members of the firm openly smoking in their
office which is a violation of the above. They make no attempt to hide
it. Seeing as I am new here I am hesitating on what to do. They are aware
of the law and policy and choose to ignore it. It has been suggested that
I let our Joint Health and Safety Committee handle it as second hand
smoke has been classed by a carcinogen by the EPA. However if we go this
route the committee has an escalation policy that legally must be
followed. Once we start on an issue we must post what the issue is and
what we did about it for all staff to see. That could prove to be very
embarrassing to these senior people. Who else has faced this issue?

Every situation needs different solutions. But, in general, you need to
build a team. My style of management revolves around teaching (where
necessary) and learning (where appropriate) from those that I supervise.
It is usually best for a new manager/supervisor to meet with each of their
direct reports individually. Learn what they do, what they know, and what
they want to do. (Basically, you are interviewing them so you can assess
strengths and weaknesses, while not appearing to take that approach).
Then, once you have learned a little about the individuals you meet with
them all as a group. You solicit ideas (let them know that you are open to
it), learn what they have perceived as problems in the past, ask them how
they see your role and how they think you can help them do their jobs (I
believe that the "supervisor/managers" main responsibility is to insure
that the direct reports can do their jobs, to use your power and/or
authority to remove the roadblocks they can't do themselves"). By now you
may see clear objectives and be able to begin to pave the way for
implementing your philosophy for the department.

>Should I be upfront with them by telling them I'm new to management and want
>their input?

I don't see any value in this. You should always let them know that you
value and want their input (new to management or not). There should be no
reason for the "new to management" situation to arise. Even today I have
no problem bowing to a direct report when they have a good idea or more
knowledge in a particular area.

I hope I haven't been rambling. I am trying to think back to when I was a
19 year old Sergeant in the Army and had 40 year old privates reporting to
me. I remember it was a little scary at first; but, everything worked out
naturally and I was completely comfortable within a couple of weeks. The
same holds true today whenever I change jobs, I take a deep breath, take
the next step and follow the basic tenants I have described above.

Randy seems to be still getting messages from HRNET but some of us aren't

gone glitchy again and eliminated a bunch of participant's addresses?
Anyone else noticing a huge drop in emails?

I'm not sure the traffic on hrnet@... has slowed down all that
much. I just counted the posts with an 10/12/99 date and I got 69
messages. A lot of time and thought may be going into the discussion of

on that these days), but I think most people are out there waiting to see
what's going to happen.

Not quite an expert, but I'd recommend following the golden rule - treat others
as you'd like to be treated. I'm not talking about touchy-feely, but
professional. If you want to advise someone that his or her work is not meeting
your expectations, do it the way you'd want to be told. Even if you have to
discharge someone - consider how you'd want to be dealt with in such a
situation.

As for asking for input, I'd recommend that you approach that with care - wait
until an issue confronts you that you're not all that familiar with, and request
specific input from your staff. I'd also request specific input from them
regarding the corporate culture in your new workplace and the actual way things
are done (as opposed to the flowcharts in the policy manuals...).

Good luck!

Hello HRNET@ onelisters!

In response to Max's question, I agree that we need to start testing
the abilities of our new listserv. The sooner we start developing
our own community, the better! So here goes:

I could use some advice. I have just been hired into a first-level
management position as an HR Coordinator. This will be the first
time I have been in a supervisory role, though I have worked for
several years as an HR generalist. What is the best way to approach
the employees who will be answering to me? Should I be upfront with
them by telling them I'm new to management and want their input? I
would appreciate any suggestions all of you experts out there may
have to offer.

Thanks in advance,

I think you are correct in that we should begin testing this list early,
so we will know of any problems which may occur in advance (although it
seems very smooth so far). I don't think we have to worry about
usurping traffic from the Cornell site as it seems many have already
unsubscribed and gone looking elsewhere. Who can blame them? Between
the public messages from Cornell and the discussion regarding "real"
reasons for closing the site and the bickering about who gets to take
over the list, there really wasn't a lot of HR issues being discussed
lately.

First of all, I apologize for cross posting; but, I wanted to make sure
that HRNETTERS @ Cornell who haven't signed up for the onelist option also
have a chance to read this while also encouraging HRNETTERS on onelist to
start using the service even in a limited fashion.

Linda makes a very valid observation and asks an interesting question.

Where has everyone gone? I also noticed that the number of posts on HRNET
have diminished. Is it that we are all in shock from the announcement.
Have some already gone off to somewhere else? Or, is it just a slow time
of year for HR problems?

As to getting onelist HRNET subscribers to start using that service. When
I started HRNET@onelist.com I did not envision usurping the traffic from
HRNET until after it was gone and we had all bid it a fond farewell. Since
there are probably HRNetters who have drifted to other options then onelist
I would prefer to keep posting on HRNET until its shutdown. On the other
hand, it could be valuable to start testing the service of onelist to see
if it will meet our needs as effectively as Cornell did.

So, as you see I always have opinions, I'm just not sure which opinion is
the best one:

A. Keep posting on HRNET @ Cornell, or
B. Start testing the abilities of HRNET @ onelist.

What do others think?

So far there are about 140 subscribers to onelist. At the moment I think
the vast majority are still using HRNET @ Cornell for any communication.
When October 31st rolls around and there isn't anymore HRNET @ Cornell I

Hello Members:

I just detected a little glitch in the service. Unlike HRNET @ Cornell
"Reply to All" doesn't address your reply to the list. I have asked
Onelist to look at this problem; but, in the meantime, if something should
be for all to view please make sure that you "add HRNET@onelist.com" to the

BTW, we currently have 116 subscribed.

Yes, this links section could be valuable. Many of the URL's we commonly
give out in response to questions about FMLA, Immigration, Social Security,
Job Descriptions, Salary Surveys etc. can be found in this links section.
As other members of this list add valuable links it will increase in value.
Now, I need to encourage onelist to somehow set it up so that we can group
them into categories to make it a little easier to use.

The files section is going to be valuable as well. So far we have a
"folder" with 3 documents in it on Job Description checklists.

Yes, and I'm trying out another feature of onelist where I'm using the
"calendar" to schedule the event and it is supposed to send out a general
announcement sometime today to remind everyone that I will be turning the
directory back on. So, remember to go in for a few minutes and "turn off"
your option to show information if you don't want it in the directory.

Just a quick note. Since the vote on whether to "SHOW" or "HIDE" the

Good Morning (In California at least):

Just a quick note to let you know that:

A. The list does work :) and,
B. The membership has grown to 108 at the present moment.

Like the rest of you, I'm pretty sure, I still prefer posting on HRNet
until the last possible moment. So this list, and none of the others I
have joined to try, have had much in the way of traffic so far. But we are
here and ready for that faitful day to come.

just a little aside. I posted a file to the files section of the group
yesterday. It isn't important in any particular way; but, it brought a
smile to my face when I saw it and thought some of you might enjoy it as
well. It is called Survey1.exe. Enjoy.

Max / All:

When the subscriber list was visible it was nice to see the demographics
of the group (male/female, age, location etc.). Everyone can choose
whether or not to display their email address or profile. A few of the
"special" contributors to HRNet that have given good advice or spirited
communication already belong; at least a few were listed when we could
see!
I haven't checked out the other lists, but I do enjoy the features of
onelist.com, including the member listing.

Thanks.

One little glitch with your system so far,
I chose your option to join by email, got this message, but
no password.
It would not let me sign in.
Chose the option to have my password re sent to me.
Waiting, waiting, etc....
Just an observation but how come it does not come with?

Hello Everyone:

Thank you for signing up for the HR Net listserver on onelist. In case you
haven't noticed the list has grown to 83 members. Welcome.

Now, as I continue to monitor the REAL HRNET I notice that other lists are
growing, such as HRNET2 which someone with the email address of
Scarmouche@... has started on listbot. To be honest, I'm joining as
many of the alternatives as possible so I can try and sort out what I feel
is the best option with the best features and the least amount of annoying
advertising.

But, since I have stated that I have no personal interest beyond keeping
the community of HR professionals from HR Net as "intact" as possible
(without eventually being multi-subscribed and receiving repeats across the
different lists) I have not continued to advertise this option as some
others are doing on the REAL list.

My question and thought for this new group are:

Q. Should I continue to make the REAL list aware of this option and how to
subscribe, or should I just sit back and see who else grows the biggest? I
mean, if I didn't end up as "owner" and moderator of the list it would be
just as well from a busy standpoint.

My thoughts:

I hope that all of you begin to use this list and let me know what you see
as it's strengths and weaknesses.

I hope that many of you try other lists as well. Let me know which you
like the best.

I ask that if you know of any "special" contributor to HRNet that you have
found to give good advice or inspire spirited communication, please give
them a personal invite to join this list until such time as we all decide
where the best place to be is.

If you decide to unsubscribe, please let me know why. Again, as I compile
the pros and cons of this list over others, and as it becomes more obvious
which is the best option, I will let everyone here know what I think.

I will maintain this list as long as anyone wants to continue subscribing
to it. I hope that we grow together wherever the best choice is.

Thanks,

Max Wagoner

Hello Again:

I have just gone into my own "Personal Profile" at onelist and note that
members can set the following options:

1. They can check a box that says "Check here to be listed in the Member
Directory"

Then, apparently if you DO choose the check box above you can either:

2. You can set whether your full email or only that part before the @
sign, such as in mine it would be maxw, would show.

Hello All:

It seems just like HR People to have such an evenly divided opinion on
something :)

Yesterday I asked if you (the members of the HRNET@onelist.com) wanted me
to set the "directory" of members to hide or open. With 69 members
currently enrolled I received 19 responses. 9 want it hidden, 9 want it
open, and 1 was neutral. I have to assume that the other 50 members either
haven't had the time to read the message or are also neutral.
If I was to count myself as the deciding vote, then I would have to say I'm
neutral as well. I really have no strong opinion one way or the other.

I have temporarily "hidden" the directory of members (at least I hope I
have, because as list "owner" I can see all anyway). Several people
mentioned that since the individual member has the option of setting their
option to be hidden or open that we should leave it open for those that
want it open and those that don't can choose the option of hiding their
information anyway.

So, I am going to keep the directory hidden through Friday and then open it
up after that. If you don't want your information shared please go to the
onelist website and make sure you have selected the option of having your
information hidden.

Thanks to one and all,

Max Wagoner

Good morning and welcome:

I thank you for joining the HR Net community that so far has subscribed to
the onelist version of HR Net. So far we have 59 members subscribed since
late Friday afternoon.

I think it is important that I make a decision now rather than wait to set
up a survey on onelist. At the present time I have set the option that
others can see the email addresses of all those subscribed. For your
information, HR Net at Cornell had the option to request and receive a
complete list of subscriber's email addresses. However, it might be the
concensus of the group that you'd like me to "hide" the list of
subscribers. That way a spammer would have a little more work to gather
email addresses from subscribers to this list. Before you send me your
vote, please also consider that each subscriber has the option to
individually decide NOT to allow your information to be seen by others.
So, those that didn't want to "show" as members could "hide" their
information and those that wanted to show as members, or just didn't care
could still have their information seen.

So, please write back to let me know your choice.

Yes = Hide the subscriber list?

No = Don't hide the subscriber list.

Thanks,

Hello my fellow HR Netters:

I started this list late in the day after hearing that HR Net was
shutting down. Still, we already have 30 members signed up already.

I have no personal interest in this list except for the several
years of value I have received from reading messages and posting
my own. Two other HRNet members mentioned starting lists. I will
hope that we will all gravitate to one and then we can abandon the
others. I note that the resident at HRAdvice.com, who also offered
to start a board (I think and apologize if I got that wrong), has
signed up here as well.

Personally I have always liked the format of the newsgroups. Where
you can usually click and reply to a "thread" or subject line and
have a continuous thought in one group of postings. Again, in my
opinion, that format is much preferable to me then receiving a
digest version. But this list allows you the option of immediate emails,
digest, or the ability to go to onelist.com and read and reply to postings.

I haven't paid close attention yet; but, I think the "on line" postings
are formatted like a newsgroup. I believe that this is the format that
our HRAdvice.com friend was also intending to start.

Now, having said the above the newsgroup format requires you to go online
and download them. Sometimes I can be lazy and fail to do so. With
immediate email I always get the communications even if I do delete some
without reading them.

Once again thank you for joining me here. If there is ever a concensus
on a preferred spot other than here let me know and I'll join you all there.

Thanks again,

Max Wagoner
