Overview for advanced pattern recognition and execution.

Breakout Patterns – Knowing when to get on board and when to take profits
Cradle & Belt Hold Patterns – Easy-to-identify and foretells of a dramatic change about to take place
Fry Pan Bottom – the pent-up power created in this signal can produce very compelling profits.
Trading Gaps – Gaps represent enthusiasm to get into a position to the point that investors will pay prices away from any of the previous day’s trading range. Great for identifying panic selling at the bottom and exuberant buying at the top.
J-Hook Pattern – How to differentiate between profit taking and a full-scale reversal.

The monthly meeting of the Houston Investors Association will take place Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Melcher Hall, on University of Houston Campus 4800 Calhoun Rd, Houston, TX.

HIA's March 8, 2008 Agenda

-- 08:30 AM --

Stock Market SIG: Jeff Friedberg will lead the discussion on March 8th. Jeff always has plenty of things to talk about, but any ideas anyone else in the group wants to bring up will also be welcome.

Derivatives / Advanced Options SIG: Jim McWilliams and Steve Johnson topic will be announced later.

Trading 101 SIG: John Godell & Ron Stockstill request you complete the next monthly lines on your spreadsheet computing the Est fair value of the S&P.  Bring your analysis of the yield curve.  You will be asked to give your summary observations of the market, direction of the trend, and will it continue?

-- 09:30 AM --

Special Situation SIG: Gregor Riesser will discuss examining Special Situations in Stocks, Closed End Funds and Mergers.  As always, audience participation and suggestions are strongly encouraged.

Getting Started SIG:  Leigh Anderson's topic will be  " What Was I Thinking???!  How our smart brains make us dumb investors."

Abstract: We investors face no greater challenges than taming our own emotions and avoiding mental errors of our own making. Recent discoveries in Behavioral Economics can help us recognize common decision traps and possibly learn to step around them.

Mutual Fund SIG: Jimmy Hixson's topic will be " Understanding Medicare options."

                    Basic Medicare

                    Medicare Supplement Policies

Medicare Advantage Programs (PFFS, Kelseycare, etc)

Because Kelsey-Seybold no longer accepts Medicare and you must join KelseyCare, we will look at some of the specifics with in their 2 programs.  Please do some homework in advance if you think you might be interested in KelseyCare.  You must live in certain County's or zip codes to be eligible.  Go to: http://www.kelseycareadvantage.com/ then click on Cost Savings (click here).  Then on the right side click on either:

KelseyCare Advantage is like Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance - doctors, outpatient etc),

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) all rolled into one HMO type plan.

KelseyCare Advantage Standard Option is like Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance - doctors, outpatient etc),

but does NOT contain Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) coverage.  There are other differences within the program.

Fixed Income SIG:  Jon C. Vaughan, CFA, Partner, Tri-Star Financial topic will be "Tax Free Municipals – Opportunity or Disaster??"

-- 10:45 AM --

Club Business:

-- 11:00 AM --

Main Meeting: Guest Speaker will be Don Wilson whose presentation will be "Tango5 Presentation with Emphasis on ETFs"

Don Wilson's background has been in large corporations and later in small businesses. He is retired now, but before that he considered myself a businessman. He has successfully owned/bought/sold several small businesses. This has helped him immensely in the investment arena, because you take the same kinds of risk and learn you can't win them all in business. You learn how to control your losses and your risk just as you must do with investing. He started this Tango5 effort to begin teaching his adult children how to invest his way, the Tango way. It just developed from there, now he has some friends and several hundred others around the country, and a few overseas using this process for investing.

He has been investing full time in the financial markets since 1989. Over that period he has tried many types of investments and the one he uses now described as Tango5 and TangoETF works best for him. Tango5 is a packaged semi automatic mechanical Mutual Fund/ETF trading method; all the design and programming is completed for you. All you do is set up the files in the correct directories, download the data, and double click a batch file on your desktop. This runs all the files and outputs a complete report with instructions for "What and When to Buy Sell or Hold". For more visit www.donsfunds.com.

Main Meeting: Guest speaker will be Byron Haven whose topic is " M is for Market."

Mr. Haven personally finds the Market to be the most ambiguous component of CANSLIM.  However, because it is such a critical element of the method, it is essential to determine what phase the market is in before one invests.  William O'Neil explains that during market tops, volume and price patterns of the major indices (such as the Dow Jones) demonstrate distribution, and during market bottoms, accumulation.  Still, most of the time the market is neither bottoming nor topping—it is trending.  One should attempt to be fully invested during an up-trend, and remain in cash or go short in a down-trend.

Byron Haven has been registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) as a Registered Representative since 1986 and as a Registered Principal since 1993.  He has a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College and spent twelve years with Chevron as a Chemist and Systems Analyst.  He worked as a part-time stockbroker for six years before retiring from Chevron and founding Fortune Quest Financial in 1992.  In 2001 Fortune Quest Financial merged with Rhino Asset Management to form Hg Capital Advisors, LLC to focus on proprietary investment programs.

Houston Investors Association
Dear Fellow Members
Membership Dues Increase

The HIA Board of Directors has unanimously voted to raise the annual membership dues from $60 per year to $75 per year.  Three-year memberships will rise from $150 to $195.  Adding an additional family member to your membership will continue to cost $10 for a 1-year and $30 for a 3-year.  While first-time Visitors can still visit for free, repeat visits will go up from $10 to $15 per visit.  All these changes will be effective on October 1, 2008.

The HIA has not had an increase in Dues for several years.  Meanwhile, our Membership today is only about half what it was 10 years ago, and this decline has eaten into our cash surplus, reducing it from $12,000 to $9,000.  We currently pay rent to the University of Houston at $500 per month, and this is expected to increase in this year.  ( If anyone knows where the HIA might rent three centrally-located, quality classrooms or meeting rooms with internet access for significantly less than $500/month, please contact HIA President Cleve Fontenot.)

Everyone will pay the new Membership Dues starting on the same date -- October 1, 2008.  We will send out e-mails to everyone in September, reminding them that their dues are due October first.  The new dues will be accepted only by CHECK or by cash -- credit cards will no longer be accepted, in order to reduce paperwork and processing fees.  You can turn your check or cash in at the Front Desk during a meeting, or you can mail in your check using a pre-addressed, stamped envelope handed out at our meetings starting in August.

After October 1, Everyone who pays for the year 10/1/08 - 9/30/09 will receive a permanent, laminated name tag. You will need to wear your name tag at every meeting.  If you forget to bring it, you will need to check in the Front Desk and get a temporary name tag for that day.

If your particular dues are coming up for renewal before October 1, 2008, you will be asked to pay just enough at the old rate (i.e. $60/12 = $5/month) to bring you up to October 1, 2008.  If you have already paid at the old membership rate for a year that runs past October 1, 2008, you keep your membership at the old rate until your 12 months are up.  After that, you will owe at the new rate for the rest of the months until October September 30, 2009.  Existing 3-year memberships will be rolled over using the same principles -- they will run at their old rate until their existing 3 years are over.

To accomodate Visitors and New Members, we will continue to accept credit card payments from them.  However, we will accept only Mastercard and Visa -- we will not take American Express or Discover.  (Again, all existing, renewing Members must renew by check or by cash)

As always, the HIA will not be able to refund Membership Dues to members who wish to leave the HIA before their terms are up.

We believe that this new system will be more convenient for everyone -- once we get past the transition.  We beg your indulgence during the months of transition.

Respectfully,

---- Jerry Wendelin, Treasurer
