HC's note-playing ability preceded sound channels, so you don't have to
set those if you only have one string of notes, it's all automatic. If
you don't set a channel, the first one is used by default.

I don't remember when sound channels were implemented but it was after 2.2.

The original syntax never changed:
play harpsichord 300 cq d e fe ge aq
for example. The only time you need sound channels is if you want to
play two or more sequences at the (almost) same time. Then you:
set the soundchannel to 1
play harpsichord 300 cq d e fe ge aq
set the soundchannel to 2
play harpsichord 300 cq d e fe ge aq
etc. The channels don't play exactly in synch because it takes a
fraction of a second for both the channel to load and HC to get to that
part of the script, but they are very close.
