The fundraising committee is looking for volunteers to wrap gifts. Shifts are 4 hours in length; it is a lot of fun! And, an easy way to give back to your interpreting organization! Each shift has two volunteers. You can sign up for a shift and we can find someone to work with you, or you can sign up yourself and a friend/family member! We would like one person to be familiar to KAI-RID because people do ask questions about who we are and what we do. There will be fliers available at the table. If you are interested or want more information, please contact Brenda at fundraising@....

Greetings!
The Fundraising Committee is planning ahead! This past summer, Jeanenne Zeider,
a fundraising committee member, held a garage sale at her house to benefit
KAI-RID. It was a HUGE success! She is already planning a Spring 2010 garage
sale, collecting and storing items in her basement. While you are cleaning out
or downsizing, please remember to donate a few items! A tax letter is being
drafted for those individuals who want an official letter with a list of donated
items. If you live in District 2 and would like to donate items for the Spring
garage sale (date TBD), please contact Jeanenne via email:
gabriel0803@....
Jeanenne is also requesting 1-2 volunteers from districts 1 & 3 to hold a garage
sale as well. This is a fantastic fundraiser! If you know of anyone who might
be interested, please let her know.
Our committee is also planning on wrapping gifts at Barnes & Noble during the
2009 Holiday season. We are looking for volunteers!! A Barnes & Noble store
has been contacted in each district (District 1 - Topeka, District 2 - Oak Park
Mall, District 3 - Bradley Fair). For more information, contact Brenda at
fundraising@... or your district rep to get on the schedule. It's a lot
of fun and a great way to give a little back to your organization!
Happy Friday!

Hello District 2,
Robin asked me to sign on and to add my comments about the District 2 Bazaar
since I was the coordinator for the event. I thought the event went well,
especially for our first year. I was happy with the exhibitor attendance for the
event in that we had 11 exhibitors. I tried hard to get a variety of exhibitors
so something would appeal to everyone. Thanks so much to the Northland Deaf
church for allowing us to have the event there.
I would have preferred a larger attendance but I over heard one of our
exhibitors calling another exhibitor at the other bazaar and they said it was
about the same attendance. So I guess that is something both districts need to
work on. As the same with other activities, there are a few things we could
improve on next year. We already have a larger place secured for next year so we
are planning ahead of time for success. Next year if all goes well, the event
will take place in Blue Springs Mo. I think it is important to have this sort of
event in different places so everyone feels involved. I think our biggest
challenge this year was publicizing the event so everyone knew about it. If
anyone has any other ideas how to publicize this event next year and any other
KAI-RID event in the future I am open ears.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Beth Walker

Robin - Thanks for the information on the district two meeting. Obviously, I must have overlooked that information in the newsletter. Sorry to hear no one showed up. A couple of other suggestions for helping to get the word out....
1) district 2 yahoo group
2) kai-rid calendar
I assume this type of meeting is only open to kai-rid members?
Gina,
Let me know if I can contact you if there is something you would like the board
to be aware of.
Take care,
Robin

Gina,
A district 2 meeting was on April 25th at 12:00. The meeting was announced in
the Newsletter that month. There were no attendies so another one wasn't
scheduled for this month. If you have anything you would lie the board to know
email me anytime, or let me know if another meeting is needed.

It sounds like it was a last-minute decision on the teacher's part so no way to
find out ahead of time...
As for some suggestions, I would leave the coffee inside, as it is not conducive
to interpreting anyway. Ask a student if they would mind carrying the chair
outside for you (students are generally willing and happy to help). If you are
sitting, the skirt should be okay. Ummmm... maybe keep a more casual set of
clothing at work for unplanned events like these?
Some ideas. One thing is for sure.... expect everything and everything in
education.

Hey everyone! I wanted to encourage all of you to join us for a Royals game
Friday, June 12. Game time is 7:10 pm against Cincinnatti. After the game is
the KC Sky Show which is the biggest fireworks display of the season! It will
be a great time! Tickets are $28 and can be purchased on the KAI-RID website or
by contacting Brenda at fundraising@.... The seats are great! We have
50 tickets to sell. Please help spread the word! Invite family & friends -
this event is for everyone, not just interpreters!
Thanks!

At the conference, I heard it said that you would be hosting a general meeting for kai-rid members in district two. I would like some more information on the time/date/etc.
If you have an event coming up and would like the district to know about it
please post it. Let's share the workshops to make us the best interpreters
possible!

Hi D2-
Well the first annual D2 bazzar is done and I am looking to next years event to
make it even better. We had a good turn out, especially for the first year. I
would like some feedback from you. Let me know what you liked and what we can
improve on.
Have a good week everyone,
Robin Rinkenbaugh
Stacey,
Thanks for the ideas. When OCD was suggested for this years bazzar we already
had the Deaf Church in the works. I know there was some worry about the church
being big enough but for our first year was workable. I'm concerned that we
would have the same problem with OCD. Does DWOZ have a location? We have a
venue already established for use for this next years event but would like to
have other idea's incase something else comes up. Thanks for your input.

Hi all! I am finally getting around to joining the District 2 group.
smile..
Robin -- thanks so much for being our district rep! I would love to
see some events happen for our local district. I will pass along the
info to our students, as well as grads from the program, with the hope
that people might subscribe. Then from there -- maybe we can get some
energy behind local events.
As for the bazzar -- sounds great. I know there are a few that happen
at OCD already -- maybe it would be a great thing to do in
collaboration with a local Deaf organization like DWOZ or the softball
team.

Dear Scales,
As discussed at the business meeting in Overland Park on March 29,
several motions are being brought forth for membership vote via mail
referendum. Thank you for taking the time to review these motions
for consideration. Please view our bylaws by clicking on the quick
link to the left.
Per our current bylaws, Article VII, B, "Notice of the referendum
stating and describing all motions, procedures and deadlines for
voting, shall be provided to all voting members at least sixty days
prior to the referendum deadline."
This message is the 60 day notification of the mail referenda. We
will be holding a vote on this issue via Constant Contact's survey
feature. Voting will be open June 24-29.
Sincerely,

Motions for Consideration
Motion A.
(Reference Article III, Section 1, A and B)
Change the titles of membership categories
From:
To:
Dual
Certified Dual
Individual
Associate Dual
Senior Citizen
State
Student
Student
Supporting
Organizational
Organizational
Supporting
Retired
Rationale: Feedback from the RID National Office, received Jan 24,
2008, expressed concerns that the current categories were not in
congruence with National's voting categories.
Committee Position: The Bylaws Committee supports the recommendation
and has reflected such change in the revised bylaws now proposed for
member approval.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion B.
(Reference Article III, Section 1, A and B; Section 3, C)
To keep the voting categories listed as proposed:
Voting categories
Certified Dual
Associate Dual
State
Non-Voting categories
Student
Organizational
Supporting
Rationale: In support of the Board's position that KAI-RID is a
member driven organization, this motion is offered as a deferred
compliance option. This temporary allowance for State members to
retain voting privileges, will remain in effect until the RID
National Office repeals the grace period and all voting KAI-RID
members must be dual members. At such time KAI-RID bylaws will need
to be amended accordingly.
Committee Position: The Bylaws committee accepts this motion.
Board Position: The Board accepts this motion.
Motion C
.
(Reference Article IV Section 1, Section 3 B 1 - 6)
Remove Registrant as an officer of the Board of Directors from the
bylaws, reassign the keeping of membership records to the Secretary,
and omit other duties due to redundancy.
Rationale: The Registrant position was originally created by KAI
when it was not affiliated with RID. At that time, one of the main
duties of the board was to present the annual conference. Since that
time, there has been a major emphasis to decentralize the conference
planning duties by creating a committee for that purpose. Because no
other RID affiliate chapter (AC) has a registrant, and the duties
listed for KAI-RID's registrant are handled by the secretary or
membership committee in other AC's, it has been determined that the
position of Registrant is redundant and unnecessary.
Committee Position: The Bylaws Committee supports the recommendation
and has reflected such change in the revised bylaws now proposed for
member approval.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion D.
(Reference Article III, Section 5, 6)
To accept Article III, Section 5 and Section 6 wording on the
Termination and Reinstatement of Membership.
Rationale: The current bylaws did not allow for such circumstances
to be addressed. As per feedback from the RID National Office, the
bylaws committee added this wording.
Committee Position: The Bylaws committee supports this motion.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion E.
(Reference Article IV, Section 1)
Change the title of Executive Board to the Board of Directors.
Rationale: To remain in compliance with the RID National office,
there will no longer be a separation between the officers and the
district representatives. The officers and the district
representatives will compose the entire Board. This also reflects
KAI-RID's vision statement to be an organization of unified sign
language interpreters.
Committee Position: The Bylaws Committee supports this motion.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion F.
(Reference Article IV, Section 3, A, 1-8)
Accept the change in the language detailing the officers' duties in
the proposed bylaws.
Rationale: The board positions were clarified to reduce any
redundancy, to provide transparency of the position, and to ensure
accountability within the position.
Committee Position: The Bylaws Committee supports the recommendation
and has reflected such change in the revised bylaws now proposed for
member approval.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion G.
(Reference Article IV, Section 5, A-C)
In order to keep continuity of leadership, this motion will change
the staggered bi-annual terms of office for the President, Vice-
President, Secretary, Treasurer (and Registrant unless the position
is voted to be removed) to be voted on in odd-numbered years and the
District Representatives to be voted on in even-numbered years.
Rationale: Taking into consideration the feedback from national,
received Jan 24, 2008, the RID National Office expressed concerns
that the current term limits could cause a potential spiraling
deficit in filling vacant positions. Another argument for this is
that one officer may want to move to another office.
Committee Position: The Bylaws Committee supports the recommendation
and has reflected such change in the revised bylaws now proposed for
member approval.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
Motion H.
(Reference Article XV)
To change the wording from:
"Dissolution of the organization may occur by a recommendation of
the Board of Directors and the approval of two-thirds of the voting
members eligible and voting during a regular or special meeting of
the membership. Distribution of assets upon dissolution of the
organization will follow the procedure as specified in the Articles
of Incorporation."
To:
"Dissolution of KAI-RID will follow the procedure as specified in
the Articles of Incorporation."
Rationale: As per feedback from RID National Office, this change
was to clean up any confusing language.
Committee Position: The Bylaws committee supports this motion.
Board Position: The Board supports this motion.
