So,

As you are all well aware we have all been working hard this past month. We thought it would be a good idea to take a day to celebrate our extremely successful event at City Hall.

If you can, please bring a dish to share. We will bring a dish as well. It will be a good chance to chat and get to know one other as well as new members of KPOW.

Thanks.

Hope to see you there!

Bill, you rock. thanks for working on this.

Does someone have the wording on the petition?  and here is the statement on the KPOW liststerv: "We are committed to the proposition that water cannot be owned by private interests; that water is a community treasure; that water must be managed by the public community nearest to the water source; that that natural and historic movement of the peoples has been towards water."

About what you have below, might I suggest a  few changes and comments (italics):
- ...uniquely positioned on the shore of the only Great Lake wholly within the United States"
- I'm not sure about "members of KPOW" because people might want to sign it w/out defining themselves as members.
- No human being or corporation may own exclusive rights to water.
- I am not sure about this: Fees for distributing water shall be governed by cost not by profit. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a sliding scale, where everyone gets a basic amount for low or no cost (i.e. water is a human right) and big users and wasters pay dearly for their use.
- Governments shall not sell, lease, rent or give away infrastructure, rights, or access to water.
- In sharing Lake Michigan water with our neighbors Milwaukee is right to demand regional cooperation on environmental and economic justice issues.

William Sell wrote:

Here is a start of a draft of principles
Let's discuss
Bill Sell

Whereas Milwaukee is located on the confluence of three rivers and is
uniquely positioned on the shore of a Great Lake;
Whereas Milwaukee may become a global center for freshwater;
Whereas every civilization has observed access to water as a human right;
Whereas the City of Milwaukee is being asked to distribute water to
locations governed by the Great Lakes Water Compact;

We, the undersigned, members of Keep Public Our Water, assert the
following principles as essential to protecting our legacy of abundant water:

Access to water is a human right.
No human being may own exclusive rights to water.
Water shall not be sold for profit.
Fees for distributing water shall be governed by cost not by profit.
Governments shall not sell water for profit.
Governments shall not sell, lease, rent or give way infrastructure,
rights, or access to water.
In sharing Lake Michigan water with our neighbors Milwaukee is right
to demand regional cooperation on environmental and economic issues.

Veolia was a former subsidiary of a company called Vivendi, but now is just “Veolia”. United Water is a subsidiary of Suez—a competing French multinational. UW is NOT a subsidiary of Veolia, unless something has changed in the very recent past that I’m not aware of.

ok. Are there 2 "United Water" corporations? One in Australia and another based or serving the U.S.?

http://www.veoliawater.com.au/en/veoliawater/uwi/
United Water is a wholly owned subsidiary of Veolia Water Australia, and provides comprehensive water and wastewater services to almost 1.5 million people.

http://www.uwi.com.au/index.php?PID=40
United Water is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Veolia Water, the world’s largest water company. Veolia Water has 82,000 employees worldwide, serving 131 million people in 60 countries.

United Water now also owns the largest water tank maintenance (also sales and leasing) corporation in the world:
http://www.unitedwater.com/news-center.aspx
United Waters parent company, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT North America, announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Utility Service Company of Perry, GA, the nations leading water tank maintenance service company, for $220 million.

That "the historic movement of people has been toward water" is a statement that can be supported by documentation that has nothing to do with a preference for the way one thinks the world should be.  (Yes, I  deliberately left "natural" out of the statement.)   The others are part of a world view.

mapatillo, i think that statement would go toward supporting the point that water is the most fundamental element of life, which gives rise to the reason many (including myself) hold the worldview that it shouldn't be owned by any corporation, etc.  it's an argument builder.

Instinctively I find fault with most any sentence that include the phrase "has nothing to do with..." Proximity to water has something to do with a sustainable world view that includes water resources - at least something.  And we are talking about a world view here, or .... maybe not?

Land near water is more valuable than land far from water.

I am dying of thirst - I like to discuss things with people who have names. Any chance you can come out?

Yeah, thanks, Marva.  I don't blame you for the instinct to be careful. I am finding it weird, here, discussing water with anonymous posters at least one of whom has now acknowledged meetings without inviting the rest of us to join.

Bill, I agree there's been poor (or lack of) communication from those organizing KPOW to those who want to get involved here, but in their defense on the meetings, Cheryl Nenn has been posting meeting notices on here.  Check out the message archives from June 2 and June 18 (and I think there were a couple others as well).

Thanks, I needed someone to point me.  I had asked these questions earlier and no one answered, so I figured Cheryl's was forming yet another group, and I wanted to know about both.  All part of getting organized, I guess.

I set up KPOW at yahoogroups to be open to the public, open to anonymous members.

Do we still want it that way?

I set up KPOW at yahoogroups to be open to the public, open to anonymous members.

Do we still want it that way?

Bill, I agree there's been poor (or lack of) communication from those organizing KPOW to those who want to get involved here, but in their defense on the meetings, Cheryl Nenn has been posting meeting notices on here.  Check out the message archives from June 2 and June 18 (and I think there were a couple others as well).

This is addressing the communication issue. AFSCMELocal952.org has a rss feed
that I endeavor to keep updated (manually no less) that always lists the
upcoming events for my union. It will always include KPOW events as soon as I
get word. For those new to rss. its basically a bookmark that automatically
updates itself with new information. I use them in Firefox on the link bar, I
have the union, KPOW Blog, JSOnline, and KPOW Yahoo group. Sign up for my rss
feed by clicking this link and you can get frequent updates.

i'd like it open in that it would be accessible to membership by anyone except media, elected officials, and people working directly or indirectly for water corps.
barring that, i'd like a separate group for discussion of strategy. but i've said that already. :)

anyone else want to weigh in?
