I second the comments on the LaGrange PD being great with railfans.
I've set up a tripod there several times with no hassles at all. Very
nice people!

I lived in LaGrange for a time, the old L&N depot belongs to the city or
county and is presently used by the Chamber of Commerce. The parking lot has
been enlarged and lighted, and if you get out and look you can see the
remnants of a cement passenger platform near the end of the siding and the dwarf
signal. The depot is a good location for photography as it's at the end of
the South LaGrange siding/passing track and it's common to see a Louisville
bound freight stopped there, waiting for a north bound train to pass. The
building has been restored, but still is painted and looks like an L&N depot. It
will also serve as the end of a hike and bike trail that is supposed to run
along an old interurban line parallel to the CSX main, when and if it's
finished it will end up several miles southwest of LaGrange in Crestwood, but
the town and county have been dragging their feet for years on the plan.
Right now there is about 100 feet of paved bike trail, that's all, it was
installed perhaps 3 years ago. The entire trail was supposed to be finished
several years ago.

Dirty politics affects darn near everything in LaGrange and Oldham County.
In my humble opinion I'd guess the trail will be finished when the powers
that be get Federal funding and find a "friend" to pave it, along with some
taxpayer funded trips to distant cities
to "study" other bike trails. The trail would offer unlimited opportunities
for photographing trains on public property. LaGrange see's about 18 to 20
trains daily. Once the Anita Springs crossing at the Southwest end of town
is cleared trains really notch it up, the speed limit goes from 15 or 20MPH
eventually up to 50MPH, making for great photos. If they'd just put the
blasted bike trail in folks wouldn't have to walk thru bushes/weeds or on CSX
property to get a great pic. In all fairness to LaGrange I must say the
LaGrange Police are great with railfans, railfans are free to set up cameras in
the
street running area of town. At one time their police patches had a steam
loco on them, and banners in town state "LaGrange, we're on track!" Park
benches at the courthouse face the streetrunning line and a couple good
restaurants are right in the middle of street running territory.

Hi Brian, Poppin Rock tunnel was filled in in the early 1990's.Clack Mountain
tunnel is still there but the north side is almost covered over due to cave-ins
and road construction. The south entrance is still pretty much open. Twin tunnel
is still open and is a beautiful scenic spot in Morgan co. A road goes through
it now but there is a pull-off on the side of the road where you can park and
take some great photos.

Thanks Daryl
I was contemplating a trip to that area the day after Thanksgiving if the weather is decent.

I know about poking heads in those tunnel holes like that. The old tunnels in Berry and Elliston, KY are the same way, but I did take a gander.

Hi Brian,
KY 519 use to go through the tunnel. When the road was rebuilt and Cave Run
Lake filled the tunnel was accessible for a while. It is now blocked. I've
been to the north face of Clack Mountain Tunnel years ago. It was covered,
with what looked to be a hole someone with a lot more nerve than me might
get a look inside.
Sorry to say I haven't been to Twin Tunnels, but I think they still exist.

I would assume that this tunnel is still there and the county/state has done

Thanks for any info.

There is/was wood, cupola, B&O C2055 which sit/sat off Elm St., northwest of town. This sounds like the one you mention.

Could this be it? Do you mean the large house is gone or the red, cupola, caboose is gone?

After a "heads up" from a buddy in Louisville Saturday morning, I packed
up the camera and headed West on the NS Louisville District to intercept
NS 23G. 23G had the BNSF SD70Ace that had came in on 22A earlier in the
week, and one of the new fangled Cat Powered 4000's was supposed to be
the 4th head unit.

I had hoped the 4001 would be on line, as I really wanted to hear what
it sounded like, but per my luck it was DIT, most likely headed for
Roanoke. Here are a few from the afternoon out. The entire set in higher
resolution can be found on my Pbase gallery at this link.
http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/ns_central_div_louisville_district

As a side note, I almost like the matte finish on the 4001. To me it
just looks better than the normal NS glossy black. Check out the "glint"
shot on the 4001 on the trestle in Shelbyville to see what I mean...that
shot is in the Pbase gallery.

There is a Southern Bay window Cab in Junction city, but I cant tell you
the number. The last time I saw it, it had been painted in
"non-prototypical" scheme, to say the least :) Alum Springs is just
down the road from Junction City, and there are Two privately owned cabs
in that area. Seems like one is ex-L&N and I dont recall about the other
one. Next Time I down in that area I will try to check it out for you.

The BL2's should have arrived Chicago Wednesday on M336. Look for them somewhere

BL2 update from Loconotes site.

Peter Arnold

The BL2's should have arrived Chicago Wednesday on M336. Look for them somewhere
around Glenn Yard tonight/tomorrow. A co-worker of mine caught them leaving Fond
du Lac.

I have one of those things stashed in my train pile somewhere.  I believe it's a 1952 with a makeshift update to a later year.

I was asked today if I knew when the F&C issued there last TT. The answer is I do not, does anyone know??  I have F&C TT #23 of November 12, 1945 and F&C #30 of April 30, 1956. Does anyone else have different F&C TT. I would be interested in seeing a list of the various F&C TT by date and TT number.

For those interested in the history of the L&N line from Cincinnati to
Corbin, Kentucky, here is a site with some information of the area around
Cynthiana, about 60 miles south of Cincinnati.

I finally had time tonight to put the old L&N Hopper I had questioned about on
the web. Here are a few photo's I took of the L&N Hopper along with an old Santa
Fe hopper.

Enjoy

This is the class of car you saw.

It was a very interesting, informative, and rewarding forum.
While alternative energy sources are welcome, coal will continue to provide at least 50% of the nation's energy.  This is before future increase in demand resulting from growing population.  Unit coal trains volumes are going to continue, if not increase, even with alternative energy sources.

FYI.  There is insufficient infrastructure for both natural gas and co2 capture pipeline and storage movements.  According to Pipeline Magazines, the amount of new pipeline needed to move co2 from generating sites to disposal sites, is the equal of all existing natural gas pipelines.  Some of the CO2 movements will have to be by "rail".

Most agreed that capaturing carbon is needed.  How this is going to accomplished and financed are the questions.

Coal debated at daylong conference

Lexington Herald Leader - November 5, 2009

What's coal to Kentucky ? An ace in the hole? An albatross?

The issue was debated at a daylong forum Thursday at the University of Kentucky , in the heart of a city said to have the largest per-capita carbon footprint in the nation.

And the campus was primed for the subject by a continuing argument over last week's decision by the UK Board to Trustees to take $7 million in private money for what will be a "Wildcat Coal Lodge" for the men's basketball team.

Joe Craft, a coal company executive who put together the donors for the lodge, was among the forum's featured evening speakers.

Craft talked a little about blue and white being his favorite colors before defending coal.

"My experience shows that, time and time again, economic development leads to a better way of life, and that's why Kentucky has depended on coal for more than 100 years," he said.

Organizers said their goal was to provide "a balanced discussion regarding the past, present and future impacts of coal on our state's economy and environment."

The forum attracted more than 300 people. During the day session, the crowd leaned heavily toward the coal industry. An evening session drew more students, who seemed to favor the environmentalists.

The forum presented speakers seldom found in the same room. Several people mentioned that the exchange of ideas was good, but it seemed unlikely that anyone's mind was changed.

Suzanne Tallichet, a Morehead State University sociologist, talked about damaged homes, polluted water supplies and premature deaths that coal mining inflicts among people in Eastern Kentucky .

She was followed by House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, who began by saying, "I have a different description of Eastern Kentucky ."

He said the state must look for renewable sources of industry but insisted that any state energy policy "has to be centered around coal."

Chris Barton, from UK's forestry department, talked about his research on how to restore forests on strip-mined land (the trick, he said, is to not compact the soil). Rodney Andrews, director of the UK Center for Applied Energy Research, gave a quick rundown on research into many types of energy but said that coal "is going to remain the primary source of energy in this state for the foreseeable future."

He also talked about the challenges of capturing carbon dioxide from power plants. With the technology available, he said, it would take 30 percent of a plant's output to capture the carbon. That would mean mining and burning 30 percent more coal just to stay even, he said, adding "that's not efficient."

Historian Ron Bryant told about the early history of coal in the state. The first commercial mine started operating in Muhlenberg County in 1820, he said, and production rose quickly. Almost from the beginning, some people claimed that coal mining was destroying the land. But, Bryant said, "the need for coal stopped all arguments."

Al Cross, a former journalist who now directs UK's Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, gave an overview of coal's more recent history. Coal accounts for only 1 percent of the state's workforce and only 1.5 percent of its economy, he said.

Those numbers are higher in the coal fields. But even there, he said, he suspected that coal supporters don't have a majority.

Speaker Jason Bailey, an economist with the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development in Berea , reviewed his study that said coal costs the state more than it brings in. And, he said, coal production and reserves are dwindling.

"Coal's contributions to Kentucky matter," Bailey said, "but they are smaller than sometimes claimed or assumed."

Some of the strongest support for coal came from former Gov. Paul Patton, who is now president of Pikeville College . The biggest enemies of coal, Patton said, are other states, particularly in the Northeast, who want to drive up Kentucky's low electricity rates so they can compete with Kentucky for new industries.

Fred Palmer, a senior vice president for Peabody Energy, gave what was perhaps the rosiest picture of coal's future, proclaiming that capturing and storing CO2 means "centuries of expanded use" for coal.

Jeff Goodell, the author of Big Coal: The Dirty Secret Behind America's Energy Future, disagreed.

"A lot of people over 40 think that coal is going to be part of our energy future for 100 years," he said. "I know very few people under 30 who feel that way."

The car might of received "rebuilt status" when it was rebuilt.  The 40 year lift rule has be upgraded to 50 years depending upon revised AAR Rules

While the coal market is a little soft, one long bad winter will change that.

John.

That's the way it was. It had the "solid" bottom on it like that.
I would imagine they are close to retirement now, as to when they were built.

Thanks so much

Did it look like this car along the bottom? http://www.rrpictur earchives. net/showPicture. aspx?id=925465

If so, I believe the car you saw probably would have been L&N 192861 when repaired/renumbered at South Louisville, which in turn were originally part of L&N 190200-190369. That's my best guess according to the info I have on these cars.

These cars and the similar Ortner cars on the next page of Steve Johnson's book are now being used to haul used railroad ties.

I was headed home through Walton, KY this morning and spotted and photgraphed this old car on the Shortline.

It's patched with CSXT, and is numbered "340841", and has the gray ends. It still has the "SLS" stenciling on it.

These are pictured in Steven D. Johnson freight book on page 101.

Can any freight car guru's out there help me with the L&N number(s) it would have had. The book is saying that the original series of cars were renumbered.

Thanks
Brian Gregg

I was watching westbound manifest Q697 depart Shelby yard for Russell last
Sunday morning. In the consist was L&N hopper 192818 with several other former
L&N hoppers that are now in scrap tie service. This car was in fairly good
paint with the gray panels on each end and lettered for "rotary dump service."
