I visited the work site on April 16th and got some photos of the current stage of the restoration of Glasgow Railway 'Jim Crow' combine #109. Many know the car as L&N 109, since L&N was the operator, but the car was the only piece of rolling stock that Glasgow Railway owned.  Here are a couple of those photos.

http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2988715

http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2988714

One of the next steps is installation of the windows. I think there are 68 windows in the car (24 lower/44 upper).
The trucks have been painted and await the car to be delivered to the RailPark.
Roof work is well under way, and obviously there are still many tasks to complete, but progress is made each day.

This car has always been a favorite of mine and several photos of it were used in recently my released Arcadia title Louisville & Nashville Railroad in South Central Kentucky in the Glasgow Railway chapter, including shots of the move to Bowling Green.  She is going to look spectacular when finished.

For more photos from the restoration process, go to 'Louisville & Nashville Railroad in South Central
Kentucky' on FACEBOOK and 'like' the page.

Subject: CSX furloughs some employees in 'surgical' move & 100 units in storage

NEW

LEARN MORE
By Bob Sechler
CSX Corp. CSX -2.93% furloughed about 280 employees in the first quarter and put about 100 locomotives into storage, in what Chief Executive Michael Ward characterized as a "surgical" response to a big downturn in demand for coal from electric utilities.
The railroad industry overall furloughed thousands of employees during the recession and put large numbers of locomotives and freight cars into storage, although most have been brought back as the economy has rebounded.
"This is a much different situation," Ward said in an interview Wednesday. "It's much more surgical this time."
He said the latest move is strictly related to CSX's coal business, where first-quarter volume slumped 14% from the year-ago period amid decade-low prices for natural gas, high stockpiles at electric utilities and unseasonably warm weather.
Volume was up 0.6% overall, and Ward noted that the figure would have been up 6% excluding coal bound for electric utilities.
"We still think [the U.S. economy] has some reasonable vibrancy" and is continuing to grow, he said.
At the peak of the economic downturn, CSX had nearly 3,000 employees on furlough and more than 700 locomotives in storage.
Ward also said the latest move isn't "a complete furlough," because the employees are able to work two days a week and maintain healthcare and other benefits.
CSX had 32,393 employees at the end of the first quarter, up 6.4% from the year-ago period.

This has been a lucky week here in Central Ky, with the first of the new
Heritage units to "escape" from coal service making Two trips on the
CNO&TP .

On Thursday 04/19/12, Conrail 8098 was the leader on Southbound
TripleCrown 251, and then it brought the Northbound 264 back from
Atlanta today (Saturday 04/20/12) I was able to get home in time
Thursday evening to get a couple of shots of the 251, and Carmon and
myself went back out this morning to grab a couple of shots of it on the
Northbound trip.

While I must admit I would have preferred my "first" to have been the
Southern unit, "Gevo-Smurf" was also a nice catch. My results from both
days can be found on Pbase at this link http://www.pbase.com/kd4jsl/ocs12

CSX's Engineering Department in Jacksonville, Florida, may still have blueprints also.

After missing the Conrail engine leading train 251 last Thursday on the
CNO&TP (Some of us just cant pack up and leave work on a whim you know),
I got a second chance on Saturday Morning. The nice warm, sunny weather
that EB and the boys had on Thursday was long gone of course, but that
worked well for the Northbound 264. I took EB's big tele and went to
work, getting a few decent images despite the weather.

We Started out in Junction City Ky, and thanks to a lot of train traffic
around Danville, got them 3 more times in less than a hour.

Check out the link for my first NS Heritage engine images, the first 4

Work has temporarly stopped on the 10 MPH curve site.  A Corman employee told me they were waiting for the concrete crew to pour the new culvert and once that is done work will start back up.

Permits posted on site state the new concrete culvert will be 9' X 12'.   My understanding is the concrete work will extend the existing metal culvert by 14'

8098 only made it as far as the mixing center in Simpsonville where 289 left

8098 then left at 06:30 this morning on new reformed train 275 ad should be in

Today's State Journal says the Governor's Derby Train will run this year for the first time since 2008.

The cost is underwritten by private donation and "each person who travels on the train will have to pay a fee".

CSX is providing the train.

It will arrive Thursday before the Derby and park on the old yard lead by the Commonwealth Credit Union.

Schedueled to depart Frankfort at 9:45 AM.

If it done like it was in 2008, Corman's train will clear Frankfort then Governor's Train will take the main.  It will probably stop in front of the Old Capitol to load.

This train is charted by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  And the passengers are guests of the Governor.  It is like when Toyota used to charter Corman's dinner train for their Derby Train.  Even though it was Corman's equipment, it was Toyota's Derby Train.  It just like the last time a POTUS train ran on CSX.  CSX crew, CSX track, and CSX equipment but it was the President of the United States' train.

Last year CSX ran their own train.  It was a CSX affair.  The Commonwealth was not involved in it.  This year the Governor's Office has charted it.  CSX is just the contractor.

Go down the CCU parking lot and watch supplies being loaded on the train and the Derby decorations being put up in it.  The last time I went down to watch this, it was state government vehicles delivering the supplies to the train and state government employees doing the work.  If it is CSX's train then why are state employees doing the work?

Last time I saw the tank it was sitting in the shop at the derailment center (the original office location). It was piled with junk and the motor was out of it and sitting on the floor next to it. This was about 2008 the best I remember.

It is chartered by the Commonwealth.

When one rents a U-Haul truck, the leasee provides the labor, supplies, and the management, not U-Haul.

It the same practice for charter, whether it be for the Indy 500, an World Series Trip, or special Amtrak trip.
