Hi Emmit,
Nice pictures as usual.
When it the T19 called for and where does he usually work?
Is the LL branch being used at all now? I thought they were
getting ready to pull the rail on it.
Thanks,
Daryl

> Here are a few shots of the freshly painted Southern 4610 from today. The
unit will be working the T19 local out of Lawrenceburg (KY) all week, so
look for several more in the following days!

After nearly 3 years of trying to photograph this train, I finally got the
chance. And it was worth the wait. Fresh paint and beautiful weather.
Will try and add some night shots later this week as well.

Is this train used for local work on the weekend? Is it parked?

I went down on Thursday evening to Lawrenceburg KY as they were
headed out of town and only got a couple pics of it. Not knowing the
area I didn't try and chase it or know where it would have been
going. I would like to get still shots of it.

Any info. is much appreciated.

T19 is a monday-Friday job, with the power picked up by a road train on
Saturday and taken to DV or LVL for service. Every now and then, they will
get the same engine back, but that is rare....

NS 111 derailed 3 engines and 8 cars on the wye in Lawrenceburg Thursday
evening, and T19's crew have been asissting in rerailing mst of the day
today...they may or may not go to Shelbyville.

Hello All,

With the Southern 4610 in fresh paint and on the T19 local out of
Lawrenceburg, I just had to go railfanning a couple of days this week. Here
are some of the better photos of it, I have also included a couple of links
to other related power (GP59 or Southern) as well. Just click on the links
or copy and paste to your browser to view.

Enjoy!

Hello All,

Sorry about the missing subject line on that post with the Southern 4610
pics. Here are a few more pics from the other day.

Enjoy!

On the way to Lawrenceburg to chase the 4610 I stopped by the Woodford
County Park to see what was going on at Sylvania and to grab a few shots of
the Bluegrass Railroad Museum's equipment. Corman was switching Sylvania,
but the lighting was not right for good pictures and none were good enough
to post to RP.net.

What a week...a freshly painted and clean 4610 working the T19 out of
Lawrenceburg. The weather was mostly crap, but the sun did manage to show itself
a few times allowing for a few decent pics. The regular crew on that job are
used to seeing me and a couple of the other locals out shooting, but this week
they must have felt like celebrities with all the folks out with cameras.
Saturday morning she will be swapped out for a "regular" engine...maybe it wont
be to long before she is back. Here are links to a few of my shots from the
week, including a couple of night shots at the bottom (and thanks to CTS for the

Full Text of Decision

34627

SERVICE DATE - JUNE 2, 2004

DO

SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD

DECISION

STB Docket No. AB-55 (Sub-No. 627X)

CSX TRANSPORTATION, INC. –ABANDONMENT EXEMPTION– IN FLOYD COUNTY, KY

Decided: May 28, 2004

CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSXT), filed a notice of exemption under 49 CFR 1152
Subpart F–Exempt
Abandonments to abandon an approximately 13.4-mile line of railroad between
milepost CON 3.1 at
Salisbury and milepost CON 16.5 near Clear Creek Junction, in Floyd County, KY.
Notice of the
exemption was served and published in the Federal Register on February 11, 2003
(68 FR 6984-85). The
notice stated that, if consummation has not been effected by CSXT’s filing of a
notice of
consummation by February 11, 2004, and there are no legal or regulatory barriers
to consummation,
the authority to abandon would automatically expire. On April 3, 2003, a
decision and notice of
interim trail use or abandonment (NITU) under the National Trails System Act, 16
U.S.C. 1247(d)
(Trails Act), was served, reopening the proceeding to permit public use
negotiations and to
establish a 180-day period for the Floyd County Fiscal Court and Floyd County,
KY (collectively
Floyd), to negotiate an interim trail use/rail banking agreement with CSXT for
the entire line. The
NITU negotiating period was extended through March 30, 2004, by a decision
served on September 26,
2003.

By facsimile received on March 30, 2004, CSXT filed a request to extend the NITU
negotiating period
until September 30, 2004, and requested an extension of the consummation notice
filing deadline
until November 30, 2004.

Because an extension of the consummation notice filing deadline and the NITU
negotiating period will
promote the establishment of trail use and rail banking consistent with the
Trails Act, and the rail
carrier has indicated its willingness to continue negotiations, the requested
extensions will be
granted. See Policy Statement on Rails to Trails Conversions, Ex Parte No. 274
(Sub-No. 13B) (ICC
served Feb. 5, 1990). Accordingly, the NITU negotiating period will be extended
to September 30,
2004, and the consummation notice filing deadline will be extended to November
30, 2004.

By facsimile received on March 30, 2004, as supplemented on May 12, 2004, the
Middle Creek National
Battlefield Foundation, Inc. (MCNBF), filed a request for substitution of
interim trail user in lieu
of Floyd and for an extension of the NITU negotiating period. MCNBF submitted a
statement indicating
its willingness to assume responsibility for management of, for any legal
liability arising out of
the transfer or use of (unless the user is immune from liability, in which case
it need only
indemnify the railroad against any potential liability), and for the payment of
any and all taxes
that may be levied or assessed against, the right-of-way, as required by 49 CFR
1152.29, and
acknowledged that the use of the right-of-way as a trail is subject to future
reactivation for rail
service. By facsimile dated May 3, 2004, CSXT indicated its willingness to
negotiate with MCNBF over
trail use/ rail banking of the line.

Trail use requests may be accepted as long as the Board retains jurisdiction
over the right-of-way
and the carrier is willing to enter into negotiations. Inasmuch as CSXT has not
consummated the
abandonment and is willing to negotiate with MCNBF for trail use, a NITU will be
issued under 49 CFR
1152.29. If no agreement is reached by September 30, 2004, CSXT may fully
abandon the line. Use of
the right-of-way for trail purposes is subject to restoration for railroad
purposes.

This action will not significantly affect either the quality of the human
environment or the
conservation of energy resources.

It is ordered:

1. This proceeding is reopened.

2. CSXT’s March 30, 2004 requests to extend the NITU negotiating period until
September 30, 2004,
and to extend the consummation notice filing deadline until November 30, 2004,
are granted.

3. The notice of exemption published in the Federal Register on February 11,
2003, exempting the
abandonment of the line described above, is modified to the extent necessary to
implement interim
trail use/rail banking as set forth below, until September 30, 2004.

4. If an interim trail use/ rail banking agreement is reached, it must require
the trail user to
assume, for the term of the agreement, full responsibility for management of,
for any legal
liability arising out of the transfer or use of (unless the user is immune from
liability, in which
case it need only indemnify the railroad against any potential liability), and
for the payment of
any and all taxes that may be levied or assessed against, the right-of-way.

5. Interim trail use/ rail banking is subject to the future restoration of rail
service and to the
user’s continuing to meet the financial obligations of the right-of-way.

6. If interim trail use is implemented and subsequently the user intends to
terminate trail use, it
must send the Board a copy of this decision and notice and request that trail
use be vacated on a
specific date.

7. If an agreement for interim trail use/ rail banking is reached by September
30, 2004, interim
trail use may be implemented. If no agreement is reached by that time, CSXT may
fully abandon the
line. See 49 CFR 1152.29(d)(1).

8. The authority to abandon must be exercised on or before November 30, 2004.

9. This decision is effective on its service date.

By the Board, David M. Konschnik, Director, Office of Proceedings.

Hello from bizjournals.com! Dennis M. Linsky (Dennismk1@...) thought
you might like the following article from the Cincinnati Business Courier:

CSX gives up rights to bridge

Published: August 20, 1998
------------------------------------------------------------
The half of the L&N Bridge that once carried railroad traffic from
Cincinnati into Newport, has been donated to Newport by its owner, CSX
Corp. Kentucky owns the other half of the bridge, which carries
vehicular traffic. Newport hopes to use the bridge for pedestrians and
mass transit; perhaps a "people-mover" system or monorail.

A friend spotted about a dozen CN(GTW) SD40-3s behind CSX power southbound on
CSX's Henderson Sub yesterday (Saturday) morning. The road numbers appear to be
in the 59xx series (5943 and 5944 confirmed) and the units are in gray paint
with yellow stripes on the nose. CN noodles on the long hood and GTW under the
road number on the cab.

Does any one know anything about these locomotives and why they are southbound
toward Nashville on CSX ? ?

This may sound like a stupid question but here goes. I was watching a loaded CSX
SB coal train here at MP 120 of the CC sub and I had a question pop into my
head...what do LT WT and LD LMT on the side of the coal hoppers mean? I kind of
figured that LT WT means light weight or something to that effect that means
empty weight. But was does LD LMT mean? I figured it stands for load limit but
is this the max gross weight of the car or is it the max amount of "stuff" that
can be loaded in to the hopper. So, for example:
                   LT WT 56600
LD LMT 205100 --- does this mean that this fully loaded car
weighs 205100 lbs. or does it mean that this car, loaded to max capacity, weighs
261700 lbs? I was just curious. Thanks in advance for the help.

LT WT is the empty weight of the car, in this case 56,600 lb. or 28.3 tons

I think LD LMT is the maximum weight of the car when fully loaded including the
car itself. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, I am not good at math but, just to let you know, the average loaded
coal car is about 120-125 tons. 90 car trains average around 12,000

mean? I kind of figured that LT WT means light weight or something to that
effect that means empty weight. But was does LD LMT mean? I figured it
stands for load limit but is this the max gross weight of the car or is it
the max amount of "stuff" that can be loaded in to the hopper. So, for
example:
> LT WT 56600
> LD LMT 205100 --- does this mean that this fully loaded
car weighs 205100 lbs. or does it mean that this car, loaded to max
capacity, weighs 261700 lbs? I was just curious. Thanks in advance for the
help.

Correct.

including the car itself. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Load Limit is just that. The maximum weight of the load.

Add the two together for gross rail load.

Modern cars have three GRLs:
220,000
263,000
286,000

SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BOARD

WASHINGTON, DC 20423

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

STB Docket No. AB-55 (Sub-No. 648X)

CSX Transportation, Inc. –Abandonment Exemption– in Muhlenberg and Ohio
Counties, KY

BACKGROUND

In the above entitled proceeding, CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSXT) has filed a
notice of exemption
under 49 CFR 1152.50 seeking exemption from the requirements of 49 U.S.C. 10903
in connection with
the abandonment of a 4.6-mile rail line of the Southern Region, Nashville
Division, Henderson
Subdivision, between Moorman, milepost OHE 118.8, and Wilson Station, milepost
OHE 114.2, in
Muhlenberg and Ohio Counties, Kentucky. A map depicting the rail line in
relationship to the area
served is appended to the report. If the exemption becomes effective, the
railroad will be able to
salvage track, ties and other railroad appurtenances, and to dispose of the
right-of-way.

DESCRIPTION OF THE LINE

The right-of-way fluctuates between 40 and 100 feet in width from the centerline
of track. The rail
line traverses several small communities and is located in a mountainous,
forested area that
contains several strip mines. CSXT states that the line was formerly used to
ship coal; and that
there has been no originating or terminating traffic in over seven years, and no
future traffic is
anticipated.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

CSXT submitted an environmental report that concludes the quality of the human
environment will not
be affected significantly as a result of the abandonment or any post abandonment
activities,
including salvage and disposition of the right-of-way. CSXT served the
environmental and historical
reports on a number of appropriate Federal, state, and local agencies as
required by the Surface
Transportation Board’s environmental rules [49 CFR 1105.7(b)]. Also
consultations have been made
with appropriate agencies and individuals to verify the railroad’s report and to
obtain additional
information and comments regarding the potential environmental effects of the
proposed abandonment.
Contacts have included: the Kentucky State Clearinghouse; Department for
Environmental Protection
Division of Water; Mr. Timothy Sturgill, Railtrail Development Office; Mr. Carey
Tichenor, Trails
Coordinator, Kentucky Department of Parks; Office of Intermodal Programs;
Honorable Rodney Kirtley,
Muhlenberg County Judge Executive; Honorable Wayne Hunsaker, Ohio County Judge
Executive; Military

Resources Conservation
Service (Ohio and Muhlenberg Counties); U. S. Department of Agriculture; United
States
Environmental Protection Agency - Region 4; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; U.S.
Army Corps of
Engineers - Louisville District; Mr. Tom Ross, Chief of Natural Recreation and
Trails, U.S.
Department of the Interior - National Park Service, Recreation Resources
Assistance Division; U.S.
Department of Interior National Park Service, Land Resources Division; The
National Geodetic Survey;
and Kentucky Heritage Council & State Historical Preservation Officer.

The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) has submitted comments stating that three
geodetic station
markers have been identified that may be affected by the proposed abandonment.
NGS states that if
there are any planned activities which will disturb or destroy these markers,
NGS requires not less
than 90 days notification in advance of such activities in order to plan for
their relocation.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office covering the county of
Muhlenberg, states
that prime farmland exists in the area of the proposed abandonment. CSXT states
that it has not
received a response from the NRCS office in Hartford, Ohio County.

The Department of the Army, U.S. Army Engineering District, Louisville Corps of
Engineers (USACE -
Louisville District) states that part of the proposed abandonment may include
crossing of the Green
River. All bridge projects over navigable waters fall under the jurisdiction of
the U.S. Coast Guard
(USCG) and Section 9 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. USACE recommends
that if any work is
proposed on this actual bridge crossing, CSXT should coordinate with the USCG,
Bridge Branch
District #2, St. Louis, MO, 314-593-3900 (ext 378) to determine if any
permitting or notification
would be required. We will recommend a condition based on USACE’s
recommendations.

About a month ago I saw a GP-40 #1379 and its slug headed south dead in
consist. I later found out that it was the last one left and of course I had no
camera. Well, the 1379 is on a northbound sitting in the yard at Danville minus
the slug and with all of its markings painted out, except for the # and the
AGS below it. So, I guess no more chances to catch an NS slug set with a NW
GP-40. BUT, I did have my camera and took a couple of pictures of it out of
spite.

A Q534 I was on. This was the trailing unit, so after we put the train
away and waited for the hump to clear us a running track, I jumped out
and got this shot. This is the first image I've uploaded to my
webspace, so if you can't see it please let me know.

thanks

Two dead, one injured in train-truck collision

A Norfolk Southern train collided with a pickup truck at a Mingo County, KY
crossing, killing two
people and injuring a third.

Ronnie Diamond, 48, and John Blackburn, 12, both of Miller's Creek, were killed
in the accident at
1:15 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of U.S. Route 52 and state Route 65,
said Mingo County
Sheriff's Deputy T.F. Blair.

The victims were passengers in the vehicle driven by Blackburn's mother, Sherry.
She was in critical
condition early Thursday at Cabell Huntington Hospital, a nursing supervisor
said.

Blair said Sherry Blackburn apparently failed to look both ways to see the train
coming. He said the
investigation is continuing.

Witness Evelyn Ooten said the vehicle pulled onto the first set of tracks and
stopped.

The train crossing had no traffic gate or flashing signals.

For at least the second time in a week, CSX has run a northbound
coal train over the Old Road. Tonight's train passed through
Frankfort at about 1945. The train consisted of about 90 TVA, CEFX
and SCSX rotary dump hoppers. It was headed by CSX 701 and CSX 373,
but this time there were two RJC SD40's on the tailend for the push
over Bagdad hill. I wonder if this is the same new CSX coal train
that has been mentioned on the PAL page? The last time the empty
southbound train returned about four days later.

On topic but somewhat adrift...what CSX needs to do is go right ahead and
re-open the Lebanon branch. You know they regret closing it to begin with,
that way they wouldn't have to worry about RJC and wasted time on the Old
Road. Unlikely for sure, but ya'll would have to admit that 90 hoppers
rolling through the fields and little towns of central Kentucky would be
grand ;-) I just had to say something...overlook me!!

I'm sure that they do (and I'll bet they wish that L&N hadn't torn up so much
double track on the CC Sub back in the 70's), and I've heard that they still ran
a few coal trains over the LB right up to the time they tore most of it out. It
would be nice to see it opened again, but then again, how often does said coal
train run? Twice this week, yes, but is it a regular occurence? I figured
someone had to look at it from a business standpoint ;). The insomniac has
spoken.

The phone rang just after 0700 friday morning with JL On the other end wanting
to know if I had plans for the day (which I didnt)...we took a look at the all
important weather sites and decided to head South. Hearing a 61N on the radio,
I remarked that there was a good chance he would have WC/IC/CN power, and sure
enough when we arrived Danville (KY) around 0800 he was fueling at Perryville
street with a WC motor head out. We gave chase from Danville to Somerset and got
a few keepers, even though the clouds hadn't broken up yet. After loosing him in
Stop light city (also known as Someret) we did something totally out of
character and headed over to the Corbin to shoot CSX...ill post those shots
