Betty,

I don't waste a lot of time or worry for that matter about phishing etc. I've
done a good bit to protect our home network in making good use of my last
Pentium 4 PC by sticking an extra network card in it, installing pfSense with
Squid proxy and SquidGuard running. I've got SquidGuard blocking a good array
of nefarious web sites and also use OpenDNS with the same protections enabled.

When I travel I VPN all my laptops web traffic through my home network so get
the same protections when mobile for my laptop.

While no fortress is impenetrable especially when it comes to Internet bad guys
our environment would be a challenge I should think but if I can share any
tidbit to help others I'm only too happy to do so.

This stuff is my version of computer fun. I guess if this was 1961 I'd be in
the yard digging a bomb shelter ;)

Dave

David

We discussed this last week on the MUDlist [Mac Users of Delaware]. I
use tinyURL and snipURL all the time. They're very convenient, and you
shouldn't be scared away from using them because of potential phishing.
TinyURL.com has a preview choice you can use,
http://preview.tinyurl.com/cokher. MUD member [and former MUD president]
Scott posted this thoughtful message:

- - -

"I agree that shortened URLs pose some risk. There's generally little
risk of infecting your Mac with a virus (maybe a trojan horse if you
invite it in). There is a risk of embarrassment and, worst case, getting
in trouble and/or fired for inappropriate use of Internet access. It's
also important to note that some web filtering systems utilized in the
workplace block access to URL shortening services for security reasons.
So, if you have a legitimate business need or just want to see where
you're clicking the following may help:

There are several ways to preview Tiny or Shortened URLs (there are many
URL shortening services available). I use a Firefox add-on called UnTiny
(see link below)and turn it on whenever I need to de-code a short URL
before going somewhere I'd rather not be. The UnTiny add-on is
controlled by a pop-up menu in the lower-right portion of the Firefox
browser window. It's not perfect... so I tend to leave it disabled until
I trip across a short URL. This approach works well for shortened URLs
embedded in web sites. You can also use the UnTiny web site to expand
shortened URLs.

UnTiny website: http://untiny.me/
UnTiny Firefox Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10181

As a side-note, I also use a Firefox add-on called "InterClue" which
provides previews and extensive information on links as you mouse-over
them. It works on linked web pages as well as files. If you spend a fair
amount of time splunking on the net this can be a helpful tool to avoid
going places where you don't have any interest without actually loading
the page or document."

I got one of those yesterday from "PayPal". Most of the time, if you
point your cursor at the link, it shows the real link in the Status Bar
of my email client [I use Thunderbird]. Naturally, I was curious to find
out how well they did their fake site, so I clicked on the link.

It took my to a login page. First I checked the other links. They were
all good links to real PayPal pages. On the login page, I entered a fake
URL and "password" as the password. It took me to a page to "update" my
bank and credit card info. I filled in some fake info and the site
thanked me for the information.

Valid sites do ask you for information. They do give you links. I never
use their links. I go to the main login page on my own to check my info
and transactions. I don't trust any email that asks for my personal
information to be given at their location.

Windows 7 Annoyances: Rough Cuts Version

Welcome

Hi there,

The holidays are moving in quickly and soon 2009 will be over. Is your group celebrating with a holiday party? Make sure we send books for your raffle. One book that should be on every group's list or library is Scott Berkun's lastest bookConfessions of a Public Speaker that just released this month. This book is funny as well as practical. One UG leader told me he read it to his wife. Now how's that for an endorsement?

Last month I visited the Atlanta area to attend a gathering of user group leaders of all kinds. We had a great turn out and spent the day discussing topics such as community, membership, meeting structure, sponsorship, and more. Please check out the notes on the group wiki when you have a chance.

User group leaders are invited to join the West Coast Community Leadership Summit coming up January 9 at DeVry University in Daly City. Registration is open. Thanks to Michael Van Riper for getting the ball rolling. The evening activity will be an Ignite at Google in San Francisco. Read on for more details.

Please pass along any part of this newsletter to your group via email or your website and include the discount codes. We offer both a text and an HTML version.

Thanks,

--Marsee Henon

O'Reilly Answers -- Clever Hacks. Creative Ideas. Innovative Solutions.

We're launching the beta of O'Reilly Answers, and I'm inviting you to be part of it. In brief, O'Reilly Answers is a community site for sharing knowledge, asking questions, and providing answers that brings together our customers, authors, editors, conference speakers, and Foo (Friends of O'Reilly). O'Reilly is at the center of an amazing exchange of knowledge sharing and idea generation, and we want you to join us in changing the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators.

What's Hot in O'Reilly Answers:

Great Java on Video

If you're learning something new, doesn't it make sense to learn how to do it well? Great learning from O'Reilly helps you do just that: from start to finish, we teach you tried and true methods for every topic we cover, from Java programming to HTML coding, and more. And, rather than just sitting and watching, you learn by doing, in real time. It's as if you're sitting next to a good friend (and programming expert) as he shares what he knows and you follow along, step-by-step. It's simply a great way to learn.

Throughout the course, you'll progressively learn to code and compile programs, work extensively with text, and declare, convert, and cast between data types. You'll also read files, get user input, and build arrays, including multi-dimensional arrays. Finally, you'll move into objects, modeling your data and behavior into core Java structures.

Great Java: Level 1 will teach you the fundamentals of Java, from the basics of compilation through methods, objects, and the key concepts of good programming. By the time you're through these lessons, you'll be programming, and programming well.

Hi,

Can you share this announcement with anyone you think will be interested?

Thanks!

Announcing O'Reilly Answers A useful site that's, well, a different kind of animal

Why Answers, and why now?
O'Reilly is at the center of an amazing exchange of knowledge sharing and idea generation. We've created the usual means of facilitating communication between customers, O'Reilly folks, and the outside experts we call "alpha geeks" who contribute to O'Reilly books, conferences, and websites. We can connect through reader reviews, errata submissions, book forums, blog comments, Get Satisfaction, our customer service department, and more. But too much of this conversation is siloed, and not enough is public (e.g., discussions on our internal mailing list for editors, or personal responses to customer questions). O'Reilly Answers will be the place where much of that communication happens from this point forward.

Why participate?
The lofty reason: Like O'Reilly, you want to "change the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators." That's our mission, and we've been fortunate enough to build a community of passionate, committed people who love to learn and share their knowledge as they work towards a better world for us all.

The "nice, but what's in it for me" reasons: reputation, recognition, and rewards.

Get Recognized: "Find interesting people" is a core activity at O'Reilly, and an important component of our success. We see Answers as an important way to discover and connect with our next authors, online instructors, videographers, and speakers.

Build Your Reputation: You've learned a lot, why not get credit for all that knowledge? As your submissions to Answers are voted up, your personal reputation on the site increases. At launch, your reputation will be based solely on your participation in O'Reilly Answers. Soon, we're expanding across oreilly.com, so the book errata and book reviews you've submitted, books you've registered, and conferences you've attended, will add reputation points. You'll also earn badges to mark accomplishments and milestones.

Earn Rewards: Glory is great, but discounts and deals are nice, too. We want to reward your contributions to the O'Reilly community. Shortly we'll have a point-based system in place that you can redeem for books, training, courses, and conferences. Details soon, but in the meantime, any actions you take now will count towards your total points.

This is just v.1: The best part of any project on the web is watching it take on a life of its own. With that in mind, we're looking forward to *your* suggestions about where O'Reilly Answers should go, what features should be added, and what benefits and rewards we can offer all of you.

I'd like to acknowledge the projects that have proceeded Answers and inspired us, such as SitePoint Forums (we distribute their books), StackOverflow, Yahoo! Answers, Knol, and many others. They're great resources, and we think the O'Reilly community can create a useful site that's, well, a different kind of animal.

One last thing: O'Reilly Answers is in beta and you may encounter bugs. We're still working on many improvements to the site, such as feeds for each tag, but would love to hear your suggestions for features and improvements. Please send any suggestions/questions/bug reports to answers@....

Until next time--
Marsee Henon

I've got a lovely bunch of surplus/new ink cartridges,
All of them are originally boxed.
Disposing of them usefully
Will make the world a bit greener.
So I'm offering them for three dollars apiece
Because that's what Staples gives for used ink tanks.

I've got Epson TO3024 (2 ea) and TO3024 (2 ea)
(That's Yellow and Blue/cyan.)
And one TO3021 (Black).

I've got one Canon BC-20 (Black), one BC-21 (Black)
And three Canon BC-21 (Color).
And I have five BC-21 (Color) compatibles.

They are all in original packing, but long past their Use By dates.
But what the heck, you can always take them to Staples if they don't
work out.

So if you want any or all, let me know and I'll bring them to the next
meeting.

Stephen,

What can I expect if I put the QS processor in the Graphite? Nothing? Will it
boot? Can I change settings if I boot into BSD?

Yes, it is this model, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP108, QS 733MHz, 133Mhz bus.

[What Bob really needs is to buy a Mac Mini, since he already has a new display,
and a closet full of keyboards, mice, peripherals, etc. He isn't convinced yet,
though.]

I have a graphite G4/AGP/gigabit that used to have a G4/400 processor
that I can't find, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP117. It now has a
G4/1.5GHz processor from Otherworld, macsales.com.

Second Mac is Quicksilver G4/733 with original processor.
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP108

I'd like to get rid of the Graphite Mac, but since I can't find the
original processor, I want to put the G4/733 into the Graphite Mac and
put the G4/1.5GHz processor into the Quicksilver Mac.

Question: Will the processors fit? I know the upgrade one will fit into
the Quicksilver [have instructions], but will the Quicksilver processor
work in the Graphite Mac?

Stephen?

Betty

It strikes me as a Rube Goldburg machine of sorts.  The key I was issued by Ford as a standard item does all of that, except the remote starting. And my key is far smaller than an iPod or iPhone.  I never really saw a point to remote ignition.  I guess, maybe, if I was really running late for work on a regular basis, it might be an OK thing.  But I'm pretty sure that can be had for less.

Since both ipods are old, we used small screwdrivers and a slim putty
knife. Nail file is thick to start opening ipod, but probably OK to
slide along the side.

Fixed two 20GB iPods, both with clicking, sleep problems. Added new
batteries. Need tiny fingers or proper tools to do it easily. Newertech
has the tools, but I only found them AFTER we used our own. The cheap
tools break. These look sturdier,
http://www.newertech.com/products/2pc_pry_tool_set.php, for 99 cents, too.

Two ipods done, one to go!

/How to avoid monster fees when using your iPhone abroad/

By Fritz Faerber, Associated Press Writer
CANCUN, Mexico — An inventory for a trip to a tropical beach could read
like this:

Swimsuit, check.

Sunscreen, check.

Passport, check.

And iPhone, check.

Well, make that a possibly giant check, drawn from your bank account.
Unaware travelers can blithely rack up eye-popping bills on their
iPhones while traveling abroad.

The international roaming calling rates are bad enough, but data usage
is what really delivers the sting. The root of the problem is that the
iPhone, with all its apps, positively inhales data. Because domestic
plans feature unlimited data, few users bother to track the amount they
send and receive.

When you travel to a foreign country, this cheap smorgasbord of bits and
bytes becomes a pricey a la carte menu. Worst case scenario, you don't
sign up for any international plan and use your phone as you would at
home, checking e-mail, sending photos and adjusting your fantasy
football roster from the beach while enjoying an ice-cold beer and
taunting your friends in chillier climates.

When you get home, the bill could be hundreds or thousands of dollars.

There are some steps you can take to maintain some of the functionality
of the phone without the monster bill, but it will still cost you extra.

First off, learn how to defang the functions of your iPhone that can
whack your wallet: international calling and data. The easiest way to
completely shut these off (other than turning off the phone) is to go
into flight mode. But that leaves you with a virtually useless phone
that can't make or receive calls, check e-mail or text.

To be more selective, go to "Settings," then "General" and then
"Network." Here you can shut off "Data Roaming" so you won't feast on
high-priced data but can still make phone calls.

Also, in your e-mail settings, turn off the "Fetch" option so you won't
automatically download e-mail. Do so under "Settings," then "Mail,
Contacts, Calendars" and "Fetch New Data."

There are a few options for international calling plans, which bring
down the cost of making or receiving calls while abroad. I used the AT&T
Mexico add-on plan for $4.99 a month for a recent trip, thereby
qualifying for a calling rate of 59 cents per minute rather than 99 cents.

Incoming calls calls that go to voice mail also cost. And, in an amazing
double-whammy, "Visual Voicemail" uses data to deliver the messages
while also charging you international airtime for the duration of your
friend's meandering message.

If you'd like to check e-mail, view maps or update Facebook with the
iPhone, you should probably also sign up for an international data plan.
The cheapest is the $24.99 Global Add-On plan, which gives you 20
megabytes of data at $1.25 per megabyte. That compares to nearly $20 per
megabyte if you don't have an international plan. There are other
options going up in price and amount of data available.

Before using your iPhone in another country, you should also reset your
usage statistics so you can track how close you are to your limit. Go to
"Settings," then "General" and "Usage." The reset option is at the
bottom. Also on the same page, there is a listing for "Cellular Network
Data." This can grow at an astounding speed.

I used up a third of my 20 megabytes in an hour by checking e-mail,
instant-messaging friends, getting directions from the Mayan Riviera
resort area to Cancun's airport, and resetting my fantasy football
roster for the week (I would have done better ignoring my team).

If you happen to be staying somewhere with wireless Internet access, you
can dodge most of these charges. Establish a connection with the
network, use Skype or another Internet phone service for all voice calls
and use the wireless network to surf the Web and check e-mail.

With some care, your iPhone can make a wonderful travel companion, but
just don't expect it to deliver quite as much as it does at home
anywhere close to as cheaply.

These tips are also helpful for any cell phone user traveling on holiday
outside the US, but data users can run up the highest bills. I take my
cell phone when I travel, but only use text, and only when absolutely
necessary. I look for open WiFi networks instead. For local phone calls
I use a phone card and a land line, much cheaper than mobile.

Ex.: Mexico - voice calls, $1.49/min, texts $.35 send, $.20 receive,
data $15/MB [T-Mobile].
                    - voice calls, $.99/min, texts $.50 send, $??
receive, data $.0195/KB [AT&T]
		 Special plans are cheaper.

Some of my favorite apps are shareware and freeware. There are many
thousands of choices. Looking in my applications folder, some that I use
are:

Audacity
Unsanity's Haxies [FruitMenu, Windowshade]
Adium
Wiretap
Mozilla: SeaMonkey, Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Bugzilla
GraphicConverter
iSquint
KisMAC
SwitchResX
TextWrangler
VLC
Yasu
etc.

Apple has some listed, http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/. Many more
are at MacUpdate.com and VersionTracker.com, and elsewhere. Lots of the
apps have demo versions, including Apple programs like iWork.

iPhone is the exception, but you can always choose to jailbreak it to
use "unapproved" apps through Cydia. You have a choice to get both
approved and unapproved apps for your phone and Touch.

phone case] Jailbreaking can disable some of your apps while enabling
others--YMMV.
