Subject: Transferring Bookmarks from Safari to Firefox?

Hey All,

Got a question about Bookmarks, & the Safari & Firefox browsers.
i normally use Safari (i hope i'm smart enough to use it after reading
the earlier post about Safari not being "safe") but now & then if
Safari hiccups, i use Firefox. i have a pretty extensive list of bookmarks
saved on Safari & i was wondering if there is a quick & EZ way to copy/
transfer/import those bookmarks into Firefox so i don't have to go
thru the whole process of manually entering & saving all those
bookmarks again? Can the file containing the bookmarks for Safari
talk to or somehow be converted or translated into one that Firefox
reads & understands? Thanx!

You might be interested in a 3rd-party add-on called AllBookmarks.  This is a freeware 5-star rated (by users on VersionTracker) utility that will allow you to access all your bookmarks, regardless of whether they were created on Safari or Firefox.  The VersionTracker page is here:

Disclaimer -- I don't use this myself so this is not an endorsement or recommendation.

There are other ways to do a one-time export from Safari to FireFox or vice versa but the problem would then be keeping the sets of bookmarks in sync over time.  However, to respond to your question, there is another freeware 5-star rated utility on VersionTracker which will do a one-time export out of Safari to just about any browser that exists on the Mac.  You'll find that one here:

It's been years since I've used Internet Explorer on the Mac, so I
don't know the answer to Skip's question below. Anyone else in
MacHacers better able to respond?

Safari has an "Import Bookmarks" item under the File menu which might
do it directly, if you point the open-file dialog at your IE bookmarks
favorites file. I'd probably try that just to see what happened, but
I'm no expert on what Safari expects to see (or can handle) during
that import. Once you had them in Safari you could use the methods
outlined earlier today to get them into Firefox.

( Retitled for the tangent )

Hello,

Kinda related is the question of how to keep bookmarks in sync between computers, across Macs and PC, between different locations (house, library, etc).

Apple's Dot-Mac ( .Mac ) has such a capability.  Although, it costs money.  And it requires Macs and a software installation on each one.

There are other utilities that will do it at a cheaper price.  Generally, they are Mac-only, not cross-platform.

I looked for a central repository and one that is a service instead of a product.
Surprisingly, I settled on Yahoo Bookmarks.  I thought for sure, the winner was going to be one of the two very popular Social Bookmark services, Delicious and Magnolia.  I then realized, for my research project's activities, the need for social bookmarking was not a necessity.

Yahoo Bookmarks was chosen for two primary reasons:

1.  Folder structure is retained.  I can add new folders as needed.  For cataloging, I am not forced to use tags, but I can also use tags.   Old school rocks!

2.  Each web site's URL is captured via a thumbnail screenshot.  Thus, when browsing your bookmarks, you can find the desired one by search, by tag and the visual screenshot.  The thumbnails are a pleasant bonus, and they do help!

The downside of Yahoo Bookmarks is that its a private set of bookmarks.  Both Delicious and Magnolia are structured around the premise of sharing and social networking and discovering like minds.

For my research project, the requirement was to access my own bookmarks across multiple computers in different locations.  I have no need to share with others for this particular project. Nor did I have a need to see what others had discovered on the same topic -- ironic mindset for a research project, quite contrarian!

You can import bookmarks from Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, OmniWeb, and Firefox. You can also import a Safari bookmarks.plist file if you’ve saved one from an older Mac.

To import or export bookmarks:

To import bookmarks, choose File > Import Bookmarks, and then double-click the file that contains the bookmarks you want to import. Normally the file will have “.html” or “.plist” at the end of its name.

If you don’t have a file to import, or can’t find the file, you may need to export the bookmarks from the other browser.

To export bookmarks, choose File > Export Bookmarks, and specify a location for the exported file. The file’s name will be “Safari bookmarks.html.” Most browsers are able to import this type of file.

I finally received my MS Office:mac 2008 from this Black Friday deal
today, and promptly installed it (minus Entouarge and Messenger). It's
a Universal Binary, so good for both of our MacIntel and PowerPC
laptops. So far so good, startup times for the main three programs
(Word, Excel, Powerpoint) are short. It has only one update, to the
Update program itself.

It unexpectedly comes with Microsoft Expression Media, on separate
media. I haven't installed that, still need to see if it has value for
me.

The other evening the DVD Player stopped responding and locked up
I had to resort to "kill" from the terminal as force quit wouldn't
work, but
force quit wouldn't work either. I finally told it to shut down and
restart,
but moments later the finder responded that it could not shut down
mail - and neither could I including force quit and kill. I hit the
power
button to shut down and restart. Not a good thing, in retrospect.

When the machine came back up DVD worked fine - but something
was amiss with mail.app - it thought I was a new user and wanted to
take me through the new account mail setup. I didn't want to do that!

So I "cleverly" tried to recall all the mail support files I could
find think of,
but every time I tried something, I got the same results - I still did
not
want to reset everything to access my mail.

First I stupidly tried to tried recover my entire account from an early
morning backup - Time Machine (TM) is too smart for that - That would
hork (as Allison would say) up the setup and it knew it and refused
even after accepting my admin passwd for permission.

So I , again, cleverly decide to log in as my root account, logging
off the
user account. So, as root, I told Time Machine to recover my user
account.
And it started doing that but quickly failed, reporting that it did
not have
permission to copy some Fonts (even as root!) from the Fonts directory
and TM stopped. But my user account directory was GONE!?! TM had
removed the directory in anticipation of replacing it - but couldn't!

Devastated I resorted to try to run TM on the remainder of my user
account.
I had to restore a few items at a time and even that would sometimes
fail
for reasons unclear to me. I finally resorted to go into the TM backups
folders, navigating my way down to the time I wanted, on my backup
drive.
Still as root I copied user account folders back to the real user
account.
This finally resolved my mail.app problems. But I learned several
things.

Even root on THIS machine seemed to have permissions problems - I should
repair permissions before I ever try to do this again. I should
probably
copy or move data at the destination before I try to recover it, just
for, safety
especially if it is big or important.

TM is not perfect - but I had everything I needed to recover.

Caveat emptor,

Tim

Hello,

In case you have to provide tech help to someone else across the Internet,
there is a commercial service named LogMeIn.com that can be of significant
help.

LogMeIn has a free service that allows you to watch-n-control another
computer on the Internet. Its been a big help in getting my Dad over his
tech stumbles as he learns about computers.

Works swell, it is free, go get it and start helping others by peering over

American Thinking (Joke)

Man sees a woman getting chased by a dog.

When the dog is about to bite the woman,

the man intervenes and kicks the dog.

A reporter was seeing all this.

He said "That was great.

I'll definitely publish this in newspaper.

Tomorrow the headline will be

'LOCAL HERO SAVES LADY FROM A DOG'."

The man replied "Thank you, but I'm not from here.

I am from US". Reporter " OK.
Then the headline will be

US CITIZEN SAVES WOMAN FROM A DOG".

Man: Actually, I live in US but I'm not a US citizen.

I'm a Pakistani national".

Next day, the headline in the paper read .... .... .... .... .... .... ........ .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ....

TERRORIST ATTACKS A LOCAL DOG

Dear Carl,

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been able to watch videos after you
installed the software update. I know how frustrating this can be. My
name is Calvin and I'm happy to assist you today.

To resolve this, I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. You
may wish to begin by backing up your library:

How to back up your media in iTunes
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302392

To uninstall iTunes, please follow these steps:

1) Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu. Open the Library folder, then
open the Preferences folder. Locate the following files and drag them
to the Trash:

com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist
com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist

2) Go back to the Library folder, then open the Caches folder. Locate
the file called QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache and drag
it to the Trash.

3) Choose Computer from the Go menu and open your hard disk (by default
it is called Macintosh HD). Open the Library folder, then open the
Receipts folder. Locate the following files and drag them to the Trash
(if you don't see all of these, just remove the ones you do see):

AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
iTunes.pkg
iTunesAccess.pkg
iTunesX.pkg

4) Go back to your hard disk. Open the System folder, then open the
Library folder, then open the Extensions folder. Locate the filed
called AppleMobileDevice.kext and drag it to the Trash.

5) Choose Applications from the Go menu. Locate iTunes and drag it to
the Trash. (You will not lose the items in your iTunes Library by doing
this.)

6) Restart your computer.

Now that you've uninstalled iTunes, you will need to reinstall it. You
can download the latest version free of charge from the iTunes website:

http://www.itunes.com/download

After you've reinstalled iTunes, please ensure you have the latest
version of QuickTime installed. You can find the latest version here:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download

If you continue to experience difficulties with the iTunes application
after uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, you might want to contact
AppleCare Technical Support (there may be a fee associated with the
call). To find the appropriate phone number, please visit:

http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html

I hope I have resolved your issue today. Have a wonderful day and Happy
iTunes!

Sincerely,

Calvin
iTunes Store Customer Support
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww/

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hadn't gotten around to trying Calvin's approach until today.

In the mean time Apple came out with additional updates to iTunes
(7.6.1) and Quicktime (7.4.1). I previously downloaded and installed
both of these updates, hopeful that they would fix the problem. But
alas, neither one helped with the problem.

So today I tried Calvin's procedure above. One note: I could not
locate the file called QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache.

Anyhow, I did everything per the procedure (as long as I could find the
subject file) then re-installed the latest iTunes program (7.6.1).

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem either.

I would think that by now Apple would be getting so many complaints
that they would figure out how to do a patch to fix things.

There is still the option of downgrading to prior versions, but that
doesn't seem very appealing. I keep hoping Apple will fix this.

Why do I feel like I am beating a dead horse?

Carl

Great news:

There is a solution!

It came from iSquint.

I had been using iSquint for a long time (in conjunction with web sites
such as YouTube) to convert downloaded files into a Quicktime playable
format (namely .mp4 format).

The prior version of iSquint was 1.5.1.

I just tried to download a video and started to use iSquint to convert
it (to see if it would work) when a window popped up announcing that
the iSquint application has been updated to version 1.5.2 and it said
that this newer version would correct the problem with video not
showing up in Quicktime. So I immediately downloaded iSquint 1.5.2 and
used it to convert my file into an new .mp4 file and then double
clicked it to activate Quicktime, and Voila, it works. Hooray.

The download installer also includes a second application called:
DeBreaker (280 Kbytes) which can be used to modify former .mp4 files so
that they can be viewed properly with Quicktime. I haven't tried that
yet, but will very soon.

There is a God!

If so, how would i go about doing this? Thanx in advance.

        You should either:
1.  Leave your Mac running Sunday through Monday (overnight) which will result in the cron scripts running automatically at 2 AM
2.  Force the cron scripts to run via the terminal (which commands I can never remember) or go download Cocktail and run it in 'pilot' mode about once a week.

Hey All,

Is iPhoto a HUMUNGOUS memory hog if you have a lot of pictures in
it? i run iPhoto 5.0.4 on my PowerBook G4 1.33 GHz (OS X 10.4.11)
& it currently has 4720 photos loaded into it (spread across probably
20 or so albums). My system memory is already maxed out @ 1.25 GB
so i can't upgrade that any more, unfortunately.

i've noticed for a long time now that whenever i try to do anything
w/iPhoto (opening it, quitting out of it, importing new photos into it,
etc.), unless i have just recently rebooted the system & have very few
other apps running, it seems to take FOREVER to do anything & also
slows down at least some of the other things currently running to a
CRAWL until the system eventually catches up to it. It takes at least
5 minutes to open it, 15 minutes to exit/quit out of it, & anything else
might take 5 minutes or more, & in the interim if i try to do anything
(even on other apps), i'll get the dreaded "spinning beach ball of death"
for who knows how long. When this happens, i typically have between
5 & 10 applications currently open & running (e.g., MS Word, Excel,
Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, FireFox, AOL, Skype) & i'll typically have 10-15
browser windows open, some of those w/5-10 open tabs.

When i have all these things open, everything seems to run OK unless/
until i try to do something w/iPhoto, in which case everything slows
to a CRAWL for 5-10 minutes. After that, the system seems to "recover"
& go back to normal response times until the next iPhoto operation
that i attempt.

Am i overloading the system or is there something i'm supposed to be
doing w/iPhoto that i don't know about (like somehow "archiving" some
of those iPhoto albums in some way & offloading them from iPhoto)?
It's not as if i take a huge # of pictures, i'll import btwn 5 & 50 over a
period of a few days to a few weeks, & all the photos in iPhoto are
just an accumulation of all the photos over the last couple of years.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated (especially if i don't have
to cut down on the # of apps i'm running concurrently or # of windows
i have open, etc.).

Thanx.

Diana,

Unless you are using your mac to do heavy duty video or audio work and need your data in very large contiguous blocks, you will not need to defrag your mac.

The mac does it own defrag processes when it is idle. There is some good info from Apple here:

An VERY good and free utility named OnyX can show you when your Mac last ran it's scripts that do the maintenance. You can also run the scripts with this app.

Contrary to what was stated in another reply, they do not specifically happen at 2:00AM. Your mac has Daily, Weekly and Monthly scripts that it runs to perform maintenance on the drive's data.

There are different versions of OnyX for 10.4 and 10.5.

For info on the scripts that the OS runs and what they do, look here:

As always, backup your data. I would also avoid apps like "iDefrag" as they are a waste of time and money.

Your version of iPhoto is pretty old. iPhoto 5.0.4 came out on 7/29/2005. The current version of iPhoto 7.1.3 is part of Apple's "iLife '08" suite of apps. Apple's iLife 06 had iPhoto 6.x.x.

iPhoto has improved it's performance over the years. However, your G4 is not much of a speed demon these days. How much free-space is available on the hard drive of your Powerbook?

Are there any apps or utilities set to load at startup on your Mac that you really do no need? Open the Users Preferences on your Mac, click on your account, and check the Login Items list. Some things listed there are important, others may not be.

You have a LOT of applications running at the same time on your Mac. Do you need access to all of them at the same time you are using iPhoto?

Have you ran Disk Utility recently and "repaired permissions" on your drive? It may not help, but it wont hurt.

I just might mention that Firefox (not the latest bata version) - over time -
leak memory.  That is, it tends to user more memory over time.  Restarting
Firefox, on a daily basis, would probably help too. Only because you
mentioned that you use Firefox...

Oh, i didn't even think of that. i'm pretty sure i was given a much more
recent version of iLife as a gift, i should probably install a newer
version of iPhoto & try it out. Do the later versions of iPhoto run
better/faster than 5.0.4? Or is this something that is typical of iPhoto,
for it to get really bogged down & very slow when it contains a lot of
pictures?

Tell me about it! But my PowerBook was also a gift 2+ years ago, so i
guess i really shouldn't complain. i'd love to upgrade to a MacBook Pro
in the next year or so though, & have that 2.5 GHz processor & 2-4 GB
of RAM at my fingertips! That's definitely more my speed (in more ways
than one)! As far as free space goes though, i have around 17 GB free
these days (most of the time i try to keep it somewhere btwn 15 & 20 GB
free).

You know what, i really don't think i have any apps that automatically
load @ startup. It's really just the Finder, i pretty much open everything
else manually as i need/use it. i'll double check the Users Preferences
just to make sure, though.

> You have a LOT of applications running at the same time on your Mac.

Yes, unfortunately i kind of do need usually at least 5 apps running
concurrently because of the way i work (i multitask a lot) & hop back &
forth btwn apps as i'm working so constantly opening & closing apps
wouldn't be very practical for me. A lot of times i'll be updating Word &
Excel docs but need to cross-reference or access some content in iPhoto,
Safari, AOL email, even iTunes as i'm working. You mean y'all don't actively
run at least 5 apps at the same time? i thought everyone did that!

> Have you ran Disk Utility recently and "repaired permissions" on your

i haven't "repaired permissions" any time recently ... in fact, i'm not sure
if i've EVER done that, the only disk repair i've done in recent memory
is the one i posted about on here a month or so ago. So i guess i'll
try the "repair permissions" just in case then, since you said it doesn't
hurt anything.

Thanx for the suggestions.

Tim,

Thanx for that tidbit of info. i don't always use FireFox, but sometimes
i'll have it open as a backup for Safari when Safari doesn't work right
if i'm trying to do certain specific things that Safari chokes on. So even
when i do have FireFox open, it's used only lightly. i use Safari pretty
heavily, & i think that eats up a lot of memory too, with the number of tabs
& windows i have open & also frequently trying to stream audio &/or video
while running the other 5-10 apps. Man, i'll be so glad if/when i can
get a MacBook Pro or something comparable that's got some REAL
computing power behind it.

Umm .. well .. my applications list has well over 5 at all times, for the same reason -- I frequently need to hop back and forth between applications to do whatever I'm doing. My current list as I write this includes Safari, Firefox, OmniPage, iCal, Mail, FileMaker Pro, OmniOutliner, Excel, Google Earth, and Powerpoint (though the last one was an accident; I forgot to quit it after a one-time view of a file). That doesn't include several system utilities also running, like Calculator, Stickies, and Preview, as well as a few 3rd party utilities like DropCopy. All of this is on a 1 GB G5 iMac and everything is usually quite responsive except for slight delays when switching to an app that I haven't used in the last hour (the system has to then dredge it up out of the disk-based swapfile and exchange it for some other relatively dormant utility). Mac OS X is wonderful.

But one observation -- I second a comment made by Tim/Deb McCoy about Firefox but will expand it a bit, and add a tidbit of useful information about dealing with system slowdowns. Every now and then one of my web browsers will suddenly get "piggy" on me, and start consuming either memory or (more often) CPU without any apparent cause. When this happens, I simply quit the application and restart it and everything goes back to normal. This isn't the fault of OS X, but instead the application itself. But to be fair, such problems are often triggered by poorly constructed web pages or overly demanding ads (Flash video adverts are the worst).

When your system gets really sluggish, one of the best tools to try to diagnose what is happening is a system utility called Activity Monitor. If my system slows down, I launch that app (found under Applications/Utilities), which I have permanently located in my Dock for convenient launching. I sort by CPU because that's where the most common trouble shows up -- some app starts hogging the CPU. You can also look for apps that start "growing" via memory leaks, but that takes more work and knowledge. If something is taking more than 20% of the CPU on a continuous basis then I'll consider quitting and restarting it.

Finally, regarding iPhoto -- I have read (but am not an expert here) that Apple made some improvements in performance as they went through the major releases of iPhoto, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were significant speed bumps benefiting iPhoto for larger libraries. So if you have the software anyway, by all means bring yourself up to the latest version available.

Besides, you'll pick up another application -- iWeb -- which you can use to design web pages if you're into that kind of thing and don't have another application already for that purpose. A friend of mine was on a trip to South America and started sending me pictures of her trip, one by one, along with descriptions, so I threw what she wrote into a quick web site using iWeb and it came out nicely, without the effort it would have taken me in Adobe GoLive (which is what I used to develop in before I retired). She was still on the trip and was able to see a fairly extensive record of her travels without any fuss or delay ... quite a surprise to her (she's a PC user).

I too have an older PowerBook (1 GHz TiBook).

I agree with other recommendations to use Onyx or Cocktail or Yasu (they all do about the same - Onyx is my favorite at the moment. They will run the system periodic maintenance scripts, fix permissions, clear out caches etc. I generally see a noticeable improvement in response times after running these utilities.

If you really want to reduce the size of the library, there is an application out there called iPhotoBuddy that allows you to break your library into several smaller libraries then facilitates switching between them. I know it helped me when I was running the older iPhoto. I got rid of it when I moved to the new iPhoto and I didn't miss it at all - performance is much improved.

Another option, if you don't need the photos available all the time, is to move them off to an external Firewire drive. The drive will likely be much faster than the internal drive (if you use Firewire, not USB - the older PowerBooks only have USB version 1 which is slow).

I have the new iPhoto but I still use iPhotoBuddy. (I contacted them when I had trouble with it after the iPhoto upgrade and they wrote right back with the fix. )   I keep the older photos in separate libraries on an external firewire drive.  I can easily switch to them when needed but they don't take up space for my current projects.

OK, it looks like i do have iLife '08 so i can update iPhoto to whatever
the latest version is. Is it OK to install iLife '08 if i'm still running
Tiger & haven't gone to Leopard yet? Also, when i install the new version
of iPhoto, will all the photos in the iPhoto library still be there or
will i need to import a bunch of stuff all over again?

The minimum requirements for iLife 08 are stated at apple.com on that url I gave in another message that presented the iPhoto 07 information. You can find all the info for iLife 08 at www.apple.com.

As always, you should have at least one backup (2 or more is better) of your data before upgrading anything. You should be backing up your data anyways, or it is not important enough to care if it is lost. Your Mac's hard drive can fail at anytime. It will fail eventually, as all drives do.

iPhoto 7 will do all the updating to your iPhoto library that it requires when you first run it. Make sure if you are installing the iLife 08 suite, that you chose  to install only the apps you want to use, so that you do not fill your hard drive with apps you do not need at this time.

Then run Software Update to get the latest versions of the apps you install from iLife 08.
