Water Samples Come Back Clear

Chlorination to Continue Until Notice from State

MONTE VISTA – New samples of the city water system have come back clear of a naturally occurring bacteria that led the state to mandate chlorination of the system.

The City will continue to chlorinate the water until the state Health Department gives notice that such action is no longer required. The City began adding chlorine to the water system May 9 after routine water testing showed positive results for coliform, which are bacteria naturally found in the environment.

City officials wish to thank the community of Monte Vista for its patience during the chlorination.

City to Start Mosquito Spraying Thursday

MONTE VISTA – Weather permitting, Public Works crews will begin spraying Thursday, May 28, against mosquitoes.

Crews will spray each Thursday through the summer, between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. Spraying occurs within the city limits only.

Mosquito season generally runs May to September, with July and August begin peak months.

City crews will be using Biomist spray, which is virtually odorless, according to the manufacturer. Residents can assist city mosquito control efforts by eliminating standing water within their yards and regularly changing water in things like pools and bird baths.

For more information about the city mosquito control program, contact Public Works Director Randy Martinez at (719) 852-2692.

The SLV Folk Art and Fiber Festival will host a reception for the International Freeform Fiber Arts Guild annual exhibit, "Four Seasons" on Friday, June 26 from 5:30-7:30 at the Monte Vista Information Center, 947 1st Avenue. "Four Seasons" is an online exhibit of 52 artists from all over the world, many of whom have been published and achieved international fame for their works. The Monte Vista exhibit, which features 14 artists from the original exhibit, is a rare chance to see these works close-- a must for textural, fiber works.

"What is freeform? Freeform crochet is like painting. The hook is a brush and the yarn a paint. The result can be abstract or realistic. Freeform is original design, not a reproduction of another person's pattern, it goes beyond the realm of patterns and restrictions that usually apply toward our art. The outcome is a piece of art like no other, not only functional, but beautiful as well. Freeform includes 2-D and 3-D art, clothing and useful items."

The local exhibit will be available for viewing M-Th, 8:30-4:30 and Fridays, 10-2 through July 10. A closing reception/launch party will be for the SLV Folk Art and Fiber Festival July 10 in the same location from 6-8PM. A published book of "Four Seasons" is available online. The proceeds from the sale of the book go to Global Fund for Women.

San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival Spins Merriment in Monte Vista
Over forty-five artists and vendors from Southwest to
Demonstrate/retail in local event

MONTE VISTA – The third annual San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival, aka the SLV Fest, unspools its third year in the park on July 10, in Monte Vista, with a day of workshops in Marsh Park and a launch party at Monte Vista Information Center in the evening. The festivities return to Marsh Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 11th & 12th for two days of food, arts, crafts, demonstrations, retail, music and contests—including the crowd-pleasing favorite--wool-spinning races. The SLV Fest is a celebration of the handmade and traditional arts.

In addition to the ongoing attractions, the SLV Fest, in partnership with the Alamosa Live Music Association, is proud to host the Kailin Yong Peace Project with Andy Skellenger Concert, 2:30-4p.m. under the big tent. Yong is a world-class fiddler whose music “is rooted in his exploration of the cultures of the world, bringing charming melodies from many lands home to share.”  Yong is from Boulder, Colorado and Skellenger, is from Crestone. Admission is Free.

The un-official start of the SLV Fest began June 26th with the exhibit, “Four Seasons” by the International Freeform Fiber Arts Guild at the Monte Vista Information Center. “Four Seasons” is an exhibit that emphasizes the artistic over the functional possibilities of knitting and crocheting. The local exhibit hosts 12 of the 52 international artists that make up the original exhibit. A book of the full exhibit is available online. All proceeds from the sales benefit The Global Fund for Women. “Four Seasons” is available for viewing M-F through July 10.

Vendors for the festival, all of which were selected by a jury, include glass, metal, wood, leatherworkers, jewelers, ceramicists, beaders, weavers and other fiber artists and suppliers from throughout Colorado and New Mexico.
Admission to the launch party and festival is free; workshops require pre-registration and tuition.

The Monte Vista Community Foundation will be hosting a Schwan's Fundraiser to benefit the Bill Metz Elementary School Playground.  This is a great way to support the school, especially if you are already a Schwan's Customer.  There are a couple of different options.  1) There will be a Schwan's Truck at the Potato Festival on Sat. September 12th from 10 AM to 4 PM at Fullenwider Park, MV - you can stop by that day and just buy right off the truck.  2) If you want to reserve an order and pick it up on the 12th of September, simply go to www.schwan'sfundraising.com and place your order (you can not place a fundraising order on the Schwan's website).  This guarantees that your order will be reserved and waiting for you at the park on Sept. 12th.  3) you can call 1-888-724-9267 and order gift certificates to use at your convenience whenever you want.  This is especially great for people who already get Schwan's deliveries on a regularly scheduled route.  I've attached a flyer with more information on the gift certificate option.  If you reserve your order on-line of buy gift certificates, please make sure you mention fundraising code # 23626

If you have any questions, please don't hestiate to call Debbie Garcia at 580-5655 or email me at debbie.1969@...
