The local foods group is working on a reprint of the Local Roots/local foods guide. They have 8 new pages to add, which would include updates on the local farmers markets (such as DN is not listed in the old version).

They are looking for any local food producers that are not currently listed. They also are looking for sponsors to help with the printing costs. They are asking for $50, or more if possible.  The first printing of this booklet was 8,000 copies and they are almost out. They want to have the reprint done for the summer tourism season.

Can you help me out by spreading the word to your groups. The contact information is included in the 1st scanned document.

Thanks so much!

Celebrate Your Customers Everyday

Every year there is a Customer Appreciation Day, but I say let's buck the system and celebrate customers every day. Here are some great ways you can tell your customers how much you appreciate them.

1.    Send a thank-you not to every customer.  Do not attempt to sell them anything, simply thank them for their business.  If you don't have a customer database, start one.  Loyal customers are created by following up after sale.

2.    Run a "real" customer appreciation promotion.  Think about what your customer would really enjoy and find a way to provide it.  Do they need a price break or an additional value?  Maybe gift-wrapping or extra deposit slips.  If you don't know your customer's hot buttons, ask them.  Thanks to Denver South Metro SBDC for these tips.

Just a reminder to please save the date and start talking to business owners about sending their employees.  Feel free to print/post the attached.

If you'd like to post or forward to Chamber members, you are welcome to help spread the word:

HHS Regional Director Salazar speaks to SLV Business Leaders

March 26, 3:30pm, SLV Small Business Development Center

DENVER, CO—All interested in learning more about the Affordable Care Act(ACA) and the many benefits provided to small business owners are invited to attend a presentation on the Affordable Care Act on March 26, 2012 at 3:30pm, SLV Small Business Development Center, located in The Depot, 610 State Avenue, Alamosa, CO 81101.

Marguerite Salazar, Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will provide information on various aspects of the ACA along with specific information on how this will affect you and your family, business and community.

For too long, too many hardworking Americans paid the price for policies that handed free rein to insurance companies and put barriers between patients and their doctors. The Affordable Care Act gives hardworking families in Colorado the security they deserve. The new health care law forces insurance companies to play by the rules, prohibiting them from dropping your coverage if you get sick, billing you into bankruptcy because of an annual or lifetime limit, or, soon, discriminating against anyone with a pre-existing condition.

Come and learn more about how this health reform is making a difference for the people of Colorado.

Hello,

The San Luis Valley Ecosystem Council is hosting two events next week for an environmental health grant that we are working on.  On March 10th, we will be hosting a community forum in Del Norte at the County Annex Building at 5:30pm.  On March 12th, we will be in Monte Vista at the Carnegie Library also at 5:30pm.  These are both public events.  I was wondering if you could forward this announcement along to chamber members.  I would really appreciate it! Thank you so much!

The Food Coop will hold their Annual Meeting on the 29th of April at 2:00 p.m.
The Coop is in the process of expanding their retail space.
It is seeking fine artists and fiber artists in the Valley to exhibit their work and wares  on wall and tables for the Annual meeting.
Perla Kopeloff recently conveyed to the Board about the need for a retail space for fiber artists in the area.
If you knit, spin,  weave, make paper, or work with natural fibers come to the meeting and show your work to be considered in September for a space to sell fiber works at the new and improved Food Coop.
The coop is also looking for donations of work to kick start the project.

Hi Folks;
It looks like Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, which oversees our San Luis Valley Rural Electric Coop, is going solo with presenting alternatives regarding proposed Transmission line/upgrade options into the San Luis Valley. I encourage people to come and listen to their presentation and be ready to get involved with public comment. This is an important opportunity to participate in decision making about the future generation and transmission of energy for this area. Please come and bring your friends and neighbors.
  • Next Wednesday, April 25th from 6:00-8:00 PM at Ortega Middle School, 401 Victoria Ave., located near Adams State College. The school can be accessed from 1st street or Highway 160.  See all those who can make it! Christine

South Fork is hosting its first Hot Air Balloon Festival this August 18th & 19th!!!

Description: I:\Balloon Festival\hot-air-balloon clipart.gif

EVENT GAME PLAN:

Friday night will feature a pizza dinner for approximately $10 at 6:00pm at the Rio Grande Club for all the balloonists, sponsors, volunteers and chasers to go over the game plan of the following two days. The balloonists and chaser crews will take off from the community building fields on HWY 149 and with cooperating winds, will attempt to land in the Rio Grande Club valley on Saturday and Sunday. This is a great way to meet the balloonists, learn about the “art of the air,” and to help get ready for a great weekend!

Saturday will feature a pancake breakfast and sunrise flight where crowds can enjoy the pre-flight blow, tethered rides for $10, and views of the area like never before. Saturday evening will feature tethered rides at 5:30pm, with the balloons tethering down for a “night glow” around 7:30pm. Music, kid’s activities, and “balloon entertainment” for all. Raffle tickets available for purchase for a Sunday sunrise flight for winner and guest. Tickets available through the Visitor Center—1 ticket $5 or 6 tickets for $25. Raffle winners will be drawn at the event on Saturday to participate in a Sunday sunrise flight. This is the only way to enjoy an untethered flight if you are not a balloon sponsor.
