Why not? 70 km of monorail in two years! Good show- Mumbai is a city of
dreams- the only reality seems to be movies sent out all over India and now
world too as Indians are spreading out and ding well outside the country.
With all good brains gone, we have little to produce viable solutions for
our problems. After Shanghai, monorail, metro rail still to have financial
closure, what else will be pulled out from the magic hat?

My intention is take photos for my blog. I'd appreciate your help if you can
tell me what would be ideal places to visit.

In fact, if anyone is interested in joining me, I'd quite appreciate that
too!

Thanks for your help,

Construction work on the Mumbai Metro Rail Project will begin within
a week, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development (MMRDA) Commissioner,
Ratnakar Gaikwad said. The decision to begin work was taken at a
board meeting of Mumbai Metro One, a consortium formed by Reliance
Energy Limited, Veolia Transport (France) and MMRDA.

Gaikwad said work on eight out of 11-km first phase between Andheri-
Versova-Ghatkopar has been cleared while land issues for the
remaining three kilometres will be sorted out this week at the
government level.

Construction work will begin at Andheri, around Mithi river and on
the Western Express Highway, Gaikwad said adding that the issue on
the electricity substation for the metro near the Marol Fire Station
will be sorted out in a day or two.

Skybus may get started

The KRCL has decided to invite global expression interest to get the project
back on track

For those who thought that the much-touted Sky Bus project of the Konkan
Railway Corporation (KRCL) has fizzled out, here's some good news.

The KRCL has decided to invite global expression interest so that the Sky
Bus project gets back on track. "We can take this project ahead only with
international funding," said Anurag Mishra, managing director of KRCL.

The first of its kind in the country, the KRCL had envisaged setting up of a
rail-bus system above the existing road network. With lightweight coaches -
suspended from bogies running overhead - the project was expected to relieve
Mumbaikars of their travel woes. But unfortunately, the project could not be
exploited commercially after the accident during the test ride in 2004 and
lack of funds.

"We are now inviting global expression of interest which will help us get an
international partner in taking the project ahead. Once we get the desired
response, we can easily implement the project within two years," Mishra told
reporters while talking about the success of KRCL's operations in the last
decade.

KRCL will also provide the technical know-how and with due improvisations
the sky bus can once again be introduced.

When asked whether this would give stiff competition to the Metro project
already planned for the city, he said, "Ours is a research and development
based project which will be cost effective unlike theirs which was an
imported technology."

Anupam Gupta

Hi All - I'd appreciate if someone can please explain the need for a
monorail from Mantralaya to CS Intnl. Airport, when there's already a metro
being planned from Colaba northbound in Phase II or III of the Mumbai Metro.
Thanks very much.

0802252008022502024052372288c28>

The proposed high-speed monorail services will be in addition to the three
normal speed monorail services already planned for the city.

According to sources in the state government, a presentation has been made
in this regard. The high-speed monorail trains will run at over 80 km per
hour and will begin from Mantralaya with stops at Nariman Point, Haji Ali,
Worli, Siddhivinayak Temple, Bandra, Santacruz Domestic Airport before
terminating at International Airport. "On an average, it will two to three
minutes to travel from one station to another," sources said.

The monorail services will traverse through Girgaum Chowpatty, Haji Ali,
Mahalaxmi, Worli Naka, Bandarwadi (Lower Parel), Siddhivinayak, Shivaji
Park, Kapad Bazar, SV Garden, Nandadeep Garden, Domestic and International
airports.

The cost for the Mantralaya-airport route has been pegged at between Rs 1800
crore to Rs 2000 crore. Sources said that a draft in this regard would be
prepared and in the next three months a proposal would be put before the
state government.

Once the project has been vetted by the government, processes like
appointment of consultants and inviting of tenders etc, would be followed.
It would then take around three years for the project to take shape.

What is a monorail?

Monorail is a high-capacity, high-speed transportation system with a
capacity to carry around 100 passengers. However, experts are apprehensive
of plans to start the 35-km long monorail services as they feel monorail
services are usually used for shorter distances only.

Meanwhile, the first of the monorail services between Wadala and Jacob
Circle is likely to come up by next year, the financial tenders for which
will be ready by next month. In all, seven companies including the Ambani
brothers are in fray.

Apart from the Wadala-Jacob Circle services, monorail services between
Wadala-Chembur and Wadala-BKC are also being planned.

The MMRDA which is the implementing agency for the project plans to handover
the monorail services to the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply Transport
Undertaking since its expertise in successfully running bus services in the
city is well known.

Anupam Gupta

This project will benefit the netas and associated babus who will be
able to beat the Mumbai traffic while travelling from their workplace
to the airport. :-)

Apart from this, yes - another north south corridor running through
currently untouched areas of the city will definitely take the load off
the arterial roads.

CM gives green signal to form the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation;
Delhi Metro appointed as consultants

----
  (from mumbai mirror)

In a major development that is expected to boost the progress of the
Mumbai Metro Project, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has given the
go ahead for the formation of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation
(MMRC) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) appointed as
consultants to monitor the project.

The development was on the cards as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Development Authority (MMRDA) was in
DMRC chief E Sreedharan
regular dialogue with DMRC chief E Sreedharan who had advised them
to do away with public private partnership and form a corporation
instead, in view of the ongoing delays of the Versova-Andheri-
Ghatkopar line which is handled by Metro One - the Reliance Energy
led consortium. MMRDA decided to take Sreedharan's words seriously
by floating the MMRC whose formation was given the go-ahead by the
chief minister on Wednesday.

Sreedharan who was in the city on Wednesday, said that the formation
of the MMRC was very much welcome but should have happened much
earlier while hinting at the delays of the first corridor of the
first phase. The MMRC will be set up in the premises of the MMRDA.
The MMRC proposal would be put up in the cabinet which is expected
to give its consent in the next 10 days.

MMRDA officials said that Sreedharan suggested the project would be
handled much better if a single agency handled the metro rather than
many agencies which would lead to operational delays. "Had the
corporation been floated much earlier, we would have saved a lot of
time and the project would have progressed much more rapidly rather
than just kicking off with Reliance Energy throwing tantrums on
various issues", said a senior official. The DMRC has already
finalised a core team of 12-15 professionals mostly from the
railways who will be involved in shaping up the remaining eight
corridors of the Mumbai Metro. Sources said that Sreedharan himself
has selected the core team who have the expertise in various fields.
The DMRC will work as advisors in the designing, preparation of
tenders, and supervision of the remaining corridors except the
Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor which is handled by Metro One.

I dont think the contract for building this line has been awarded yet.
Last I heard, they had received (or were about to receive) offers from
