ON THE QT: Things I pass along just for you!

YOU COULD HAVE MONEY WAITING FOR YOU TO CLAIM
It really makes my day to know that my work helps others. For example, I heard from Grace in South Bend, IN, who is also a Kim's Club member this past week.

"I just got done paying for some costly car repairs. I was wondering how I was going to make next month's mortgage. Then, I stumbled across your Cool Site on unclaimed money.  On a lark, I decided to try it out. Imagine my surprise when I found an old utility deposit. It more than covers my car repairs! Thanks so much for recommending this great site!"

Have you checked for unclaimed money? Money becomes unclaimed for a variety of reasons. Unclaimed property includes bank accounts, stocks, dividends, payroll checks, refunds, traveler's checks, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders or gift certificates (in some states), insurance payments or refunds, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes.

I can't guarantee that you'll find something there. But you'll never know until you check! Many Internet sites charge for this information. Don't pay. Use the site I recommend. Click here to access it now.

Speaking of money, we're still feeling the economy's pinch. But I have plenty of ways to lessen the pain. They're all in my Money Center!

You'll also learn at our Money Center how to save on your monthly expenses and start a budget. You won't find scams here, just great ideas!

HAVE A SMALL BUSINESS?
Many people dream of starting their own business. Most are daunted by the risks and costs. But freebies online can help you start—and manage—your business.

I've been down this road. Back in the day, I blundered around with marketing. I worried about making the payroll. Fortunately, it eventually worked out.

If you have a small business, check our the list of freebies. There's bound to be a few you can take use. Check it out now at www.komando.com/smallbusinesscenter

NO ONE LIKES TO THINK OF THE INEVITABLE…
Last weekend, I received a call from Bob in Austin, TX. He's been doing some estate planning and just finished his will. But he wants to leave notes for his wife. He needs to leave passwords to online accounts and the like. He also wants to make sure she knows where important documents are and who to call for repairs to their house. I promised to find something that would help Bob.

This is important. Everyone should follow Bob's lead. Online services can help. Most are overkill. Others aren't enough. So, I am custom developing a form that you can use. However, July 4th is coming up, so things are busy at Komandotown. Look for a link to the form right here sometime in July.

Speaking of wills, here's a question we've recently fielded about the topic:

Q. I'm a former law enforcement officer. I've been disabled since 2000. I'm also a single parent of a 12-year-old. I want to leave him my will and encouragements for the future. I'd like to do this in a video file. What type of media will last the longest? CD or thumb drive? Click here to read the answer.

THE BEST FREE SOFTWARE ON THE INTERNET
Software manufacturers deserve to be paid for their work. So, you shouldn't download illegal software. It's wrong.

But, if you can't afford a program, that doesn't mean you need to go without. Chances are, you'll find a free alternative that will do the same thing. And, chances are, you'll find that free alternative at my Download of the Day site! Each day, I pick one program to feature. Each is thoroughly checked and tested. You won't find any nasty surprises here!

Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:

Saturday's Download of the Day—Interested in testing the newest software before anyone else? Don't mind dealing with a few bugs? Many companies are looking for people to beta test new software.

Preview of Sunday's download—How well do you know your PC? This program will show you more ins and outs than you can imagine.

Want direct access to over 300 free programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!

And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.

SHARE WITH A FRIEND: Help keep your family and friends in the know. Forward this newsletter to them now. Or, if you prefer, invite them to join us. In fact, we have a special place set up to do just that. Click now and share the power of knowledge.

VIDEOS FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
Saturday is a day for a rest and relaxation. It's also a great time to catch up with my Videos of the Day. Each day I pick one great family friendly video to feature. It may be funny, or it may be inspiring. But it is always worth your time!

Here are my favorite videos from the past week:

• War memorials are created in different ways. Sometimes Congress signs off on them. Others take a little more work.
• Family can be defined in a number of ways. Larry Scandin is a father to many. But he's never had a child of his own.
• Woodstock defined an era. This year marks its 40th anniversary. Watch behind-the-scenes footage of the festival.
• You'll enjoy watching this player take warm-up swings. Oh, yes, I know, that's weird. But this trick is worth watching.

Sports stars are heroes to millions. But these athletes are in another category entirely. They are super-talented or downright strange. But you can't deny their skills. See more in my Video of the Day archive:

• Fishing isn't often seen as an exciting sport. But this man is out to change that. Does he succeed? Or is he just crazy?
• You've heard of helicopter skiing. But what about helicopter golf for the 19th hole? This African golf course is extreme!
• We all get down. Today's video should perk you up. It's about a guy with no legs and one partial arm. Is he down? Oh, no!
• What were you doing at 2? I bet you weren't a pool player. I wouldn't want to take on this kid. His skill is amazing.

videoSaturday's video—Marathon runners have to be in great shape. But what about ultramarathon runners? These athletes are more than human. This race is incredible.

Preview of Sunday's video—The first lunar landing was an amazing moment in history. But few people know the drama that unfolded. Get the story from those who were there.

NOTE: Are you having trouble seeing my daily video picks? Do you get a message that the video is not available? Sorry to say, it's probably not the video. It's your computer, my friend. Get help on my troubleshooting page. These problems are pretty easy to fix.

SHARE MY VIDEO PICKS
On the lower left of the Video of the Day screen, there is a button. In fact, here's what the button looks like.

Click this button and you can share the video with family members, friends, coworkers and more.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: Fight spam on your phone and PC

Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.

DIGITAL DIGRESSIONS: Tips that work for you!

CONVERT YOUR LP'S TO MP3'S IN A JIFFY
Paul wrote from West Palm Beach, FL, where he catches the show on WJNO 1290 AM. He has a large collection of vinyl LPs. He'd like to convert them to MP3s and listen to them on his phone.

There are two ways to go, Paul. There's the hard way. And there's the easy way. Why would people do it the hard way? It's cheaper! So, here's how that works.

Connect your stereo to your computer. You can't connect your turntable directly to your computer. It requires a preamp. This amplifies the sound so that it's, well, audible!

Getting the connections right is tricky, depending on your computer's sound card. Next, use Audacity to record the LPs. I assume you'll want each song in a separate file. So, you'll need to split the record into the various tracks. You can finish by adding song, artist and album tags to the files.

I have step-by-step instructions on my site. You'll also want to read my tip on editing information in MP3 tags.

Now, let's look at the easy way. You'll spend less time on it. That'll free you up for more yard work!

What you really need is a USB turntable. Just plug it into a USB slot on your computer. No worrying about proper connections and whatnot. I got so many requests like this that I started selling the turntables.

OK, they're $200. If you have two albums to digitize, do it the hard way. But lots of people have big record collections. Or, you might want to help out family or friends.  If that's you, buy a turntable. It's so simple.

With the turntable connected, start the software. Put on a record. The software records the music and splits it into files for you. It will then look up the track information on the Internet. All you need do is flip the record!

The turntable will even work with cassette decks. It has a line-in. Connect the cassette deck and digitize your cassettes, too.

PAY IT FORWARD: I'm sure at least one person you know might benefit from these tidbits. So, spread the love. Forward this newsletter to all your friends. Encourage them to de-stress, too, and sign up for our newsletters!

FINDING A REPLACEMENT FOR MICROSOFT MONEY
Linda wrote from Nashville, TN, where she catches the show on WWTN 99.7 FM. She's used Microsoft Money for years. But she read in my News of the Day newsletter that Money is being discontinued. She needs a free program that can import her Money data.

It's always a hassle when a company discontinues a program. But you usually don't have to switch to a new program. You can often continue to use the old program.

Microsoft Money is different. It connects to online services. For example, it connects to most banks. Connections expire one to two years after Money is activated.

So, Money users should upgrade sooner, rather than later. In most cases, you could export your data to Quicken. There are limitations, though. You can learn more about that on Microsoft's site.

However, you don't need to pay for Quicken. You'll find free programs on my site that will do the trick. AceMoney Lite and GnuCash will both work. Just export your Money data to a Quicken file. Then, open the file with the free program.

Are you using your computer to manage your finances? If not, now's the time to get started! My column will help you find a financial solution. It's easy!

Remember, before you start converting any files, make sure you have a backup. Things can go wrong. You can make a backup from within Money.

But really, when it comes to backups, you need an easy way to make sure that you have a copy of your most important files and precious memories. I'd use Carbonite.

Pat in Virginia recently sent me this e-mail: "The best thing I ever did was sign up for Carbonite. I'm going to school online and I had to go on a medical leave in the middle of my last class. I have to take the class again and I asked the professor if I could submit the paper I did for the previous class. I had deleted it when I went on leave, but Carbonite had it! Thank you, Kim and Carbonite, for saving me several days of hard work and research!

You can try Carbonite free for 15 days. Use promo code Kim during your free trial and get two months free when you buy. Click here to get your backups started now.

SECURING YOUR WI-FI NETWORK FROM PROWLERS
Virginia wrote from Kingman, AZ, where she tunes in on KAAA 1230 AM. She wants to secure her wireless network. She knows I've covered that on my site. She heard me mention it on my show. But she can't find the tip.

It's important to lock down your wireless network. You don't want neighbors using it for illegal purposes. Nor do you want them perusing your files.

Protecting your network takes about 10 minutes. My must-read tip will walk you through the process. Just pay attention to the various security standards. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is too easily cracked. You might as well have no security at all.

I'm sorry you couldn't find that tip. So, let's talk about searching my site for a moment. I often mention things on my show. Those links are on the Show Picks page.  Bookmark that page.

For some reason, many listeners miss the Show Picks page. On my home page, just click the Show Picks link. You can't miss it; the link is next to my dazzling picture.

Of course, not everything will be on the Show Picks page. So, you have search options. You can use the search box at the top of every page. This will search my entire site and return relevant results. A second search box only appears on certain sections of my site. Use it to search that section, such as Tips or Cool Sites.

Securing your Wi-Fi network is important. But I have plenty more on security:

THE WEEKLY COLUMN:

NEED HELP RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS? LOOK TO THE CLOUDS
I've been running a small business for years. I wouldn't go back to working for a corporation. But small business is a euphemism for Big Headaches.

For instance, my computer system is never far from my thoughts. I send more than 6 million e-mail newsletters a week. My Web site is very, very busy. My studios produce national radio shows. When my system is down, I'm dead.

I know computers pretty thoroughly. Nonetheless, mine have been a struggle for years.

If I struggle with computers, how do other businesspeople get by? I've never figured that out. I suspect people limp along, working around, and cursing, their computers and networks.

There may be true help on the horizon. It doesn't really extend to local computer systems yet. But it's making other features of business easier. I'm talking about cloud computing.

Yes, cloud computing is the coming thing. The term often makes people comatose. But my explanation will leave you awestruck! Read all about it in my free column.

Do you have a Web site or blog? If so, help support The Kim Komando Show! Linking to my site is easy. Plus, I just added new artwork to post on your page. You'll find instructions and the artwork here. Thank you for your support!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
Did you know that I host two national radio shows? I have a Digital Minute that airs Monday through Friday. I also host a three-hour show on the weekends. Over 460 radio stations in the great United States broadcast my shows. Plus, from here in the desert come all kinds of tidbits about living a digital lifestyle. You can read my weekly column in over 100 Gannett newspapers across the country. And I write two columns a week for the USAToday Web site.

HAVE A QUESTION? CALL ME! EXTRA HOUR THIS WEEKEND!
If you have a question about something digital, let me help! It takes just three easy steps: 1.) Call the LIVE broadcast. That's this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the East Coast, or, if you live on the West Coast, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. 2.) Know the phone number. It is, of course, toll-free 1-888-825-5254. 3.) Talk to me. That's all there is to it!

ROOKIE RUNDOWN: Tips to get you newbies up and going!

Kelley wrote from Spokane, WA. She tunes in on KQNT 590 AM. She downloaded a movie and television shows from iTunes. She would like to burn them to DVD. That way, she can watch them on her HDTV.

I get this very question quite a bit, Kelley. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to burn videos purchased from iTunes to DVD.

The videos are encrypted for DRM, or digital rights management. This prevents unauthorized copying of the videos. You'll find that most, if not all, video downloads use DRM.

That doesn't mean that the videos are trapped on your computer. But viewing them on HDTV will take some work.

The simplest solution is to put the videos on an iPod. The iPod, of course, must support video. You can then connect the iPod to your HDTV. You'll need an A/V cable for the iPod. Expect to pay about $50 for this.

Another solution is to buy a media hub. This basically streams content from your computer to your HDTV.

Media hubs are among the more difficult products to buy. That's because of compatibility issues. The hub must play the formats you want to use. It also must be compatible with the store where you purchased the content.

Most media hubs are incompatible with iTunes videos. However, the pricey AppleTV will work. I have other options in my recent column.

You may have other videos that you'd like to burn to DVD. Provided they don't have DRM, you can do this. For example, you can burn your home movies to DVD. My handy tip will walk you through the process.

I've been getting a lot of questions about DVDs and Blu-ray lately. People want to know when they will become obsolete. Now, I don't have a crystal ball. But my must-read tip will give you some insight.

GOOGLE ISSUES CRITICAL PATCH FOR CHROME
This week, Google patched a critical vulnerability in its Chrome Web browser. The flaw can be used in a buffer overflow attack. This would crash the browser and allow a hacker to run code. If you haven't gotten the update, now is the time to do so.

Hackers are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in third-party software. Many users neglect to install the necessary patches for their software. So, I recommend using Secunia's Personal Software Inspector. It will alert you to any updates to your software. You can download this great free program from my site.

KILLER TIP--THE WEEKLY QUESTION SENT IN FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

I have a point-and-shoot camera that I use for photos and videos. I've been holding off on upgrading to a digital SLR for some time. But more and more SLRs are capable of shooting video. So, it seems like now is the time for me to upgrade. Can you give me some buying advice on video-capable SLRs? I know they're going to be expensive, but I'd like to keep the price under $2,000.
Mark in Omaha, NE, listening on KFAB 1110 AM and is also a member of Kim's Club

Most digital SLRs cannot record video. That's due to the way SLRs are designed. A mirror sits in front of the camera sensor. The mirror must lift up in order to take a picture. This is why the viewfinder blacks out briefly when you snap a picture.

A video is simply a series of photos strung together. So, SLRs have not been able to capture videos. But things are changing. Manufacturers started by introducing Live View. This lets you frame shots on the LCD screen instead of using the viewfinder. This has lead to SLRs that can record video.

Other manufacturers have taken a different approach. They have gotten rid of the mirror altogether. They use an electronic viewfinder instead. Data from the sensor is fed to an electronic screen in the eyepiece.

SLRs that can record video are becoming more common. They're still the exception rather than the rule. But you'll find them at a variety of price points. So, you don't need to spend thousands. In fact, you can find video-capable models for less than $1,000.

This is new technology. So, there are kinks. For example, some cameras don't autofocus in video mode. You'll need to manually focus. And, you may find that the exposure isn't adjusted as you film. This can pose a problem with dramatic changes in light. And videos are often limited to a few minutes.

The learning curve also can be steep. It is more difficult shooting video with an SLR than a point-and-shoot. You may prefer your point-and-shoot or a camcorder.

Canon makes two digital SLRs that capture video. At the low end is the EOS Rebel T1i ($800, body only). Its 15-megapixel sensor provides high-definition video. It records 1080p at 20 frames per second. This is a slower frame rate than professional video. You'll see some choppiness. A better option is the 720p mode, at 30 frames per second. This is full speed, and 720p also is high definition.

In addition, Canon makes the high-end 5D Mark II ($2,700, body only). Its 21-megapixel sensor can capture 1080p at 30 frames per second.

Nikon also makes a couple of SLRs that capture video. There's the entry-level D5000 ($730, body only). Its 12-megapixel sensor is capable of 720p at 30 frames per second. There's also the
mid-range D90 ($1,000, body only). It features a 12-megapixel sensor capable of 720p at 24 frames per second. This is the frame rate used in movies.

Panasonic makes the 12-megapixel Lumix DMC-GH1 ($1,500, with lens). It isn't truly an SLR, as it doesn't have a flip-up mirror. However, it has an SLR sensor and interchangeable lenses. It records 1080p at 24 frames per second or 720p at 60 frames per second.

Olympus also announced the E-P1 ($750, body only). Again, this technically isn't an SLR. But it has SLR qualities similar to the Panasonic's. Its 12-megapixel sensor is capable of 720p at 30 frames per second.

I expect to see more SLRs that shoot video. But those are your choices for now.

SLRs are primarily purchased to shoot photos. So, pay attention to more than just the video features. My buying guide will help you determine what you need in an SLR. It will help you find the perfect camera!

Of course, there's a wide range of prices. Some are more than double the price of others. You may also be wondering if you need a higher-end camera. In that case, don't miss my buying guide on high-end SLRs. It will explain all!

One of the biggest draws of SLRs is the ability to change lenses. My buying guide will help you select the right lenses for your SLR. Don't miss it!

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU LAUGH

THIS ONE IS FOR THE BIRDS
A man was married and happy, but he had one complaint. His wife was always nursing sick birds. One day, he came home to find a robin coughing in the living room. In the dining room, a bluebird had its wing in a sling. He went to the kitchen, where he found his wife cuddling a half-frozen bird. "We've got to get these #*@#! birds out of here," he yelled. Replied his wife, "Please, dear, no bad language in front of the chilled wren."

HELP ME. I'D LIKE YOUR INPUT ON CARBONITE
The other day, I was speaking with some folks at Carbonite. As you know, Carbonite is one of my national radio show's sponsors. They asked me to help with a little research.

They asked that I pose this question: What can Carbonite do to make its service more attractive? Why haven't you signed up?

Carbonite charges $55 for a full year of unlimited online backups. My readers get two months free if you join Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com/kim) after the 15-day trial period.

Take some time to think about it. Then, head over to my site and let me know. Use the handy form found by clicking here.

I'll randomly pick a handful of people who respond and award them some wonderful gifts. I'm not sure what the gifts are yet. But you know that I never give away junk!

Thank you so much for your help! Your input is valuable.
