Here are my favorite videos from the past week:

• Our world is amazing. And who better to show it off than the Discovery Channel? This video will put a smile on your face.
• Wednesday was Veterans Day. This video honors those who have served. And it remembers those who gave their lives.
Who doesn't like a good magic trick? Magicians are unique entertainers: They mess with you. And you like it. These magicians are fun to watch. See more in my Video of the Day archive:
• This isn't your standard magic trick. This takes a little more skill. Also, it's hilarious. What more could you want?
• Have you ever seen a mathemagician? This man can solve problems faster than someone using a calculator! Wow!
• I'm too smart to be fooled by magicians. I know it's just misdirection. In fact, I'm going to figure out this video any minute.
• Magicians' should amaze and astound. That is, unless they're not very good. Then they use other talents, like comedy.
Saturday's video—We imagine artists with brush in hand, toiling behind canvas. But maybe that guy at the bus stop is painting right now. He could be, if he has an iPhone.
Preview of Sunday's video—Capt. "Sully" Sullenberger saved countless lives by ditching his plane in the Hudson River. See exactly how it happened.

STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!
• Finding a Web-connected photo frame
• How to use Bookmarks
• Must-have programs for Windows 7
• Important security tips; and some awesome freebies!
WILL YOU GET A FREE, AUTOMATIC WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE?
Timothy in Elk Grove, CA, catches the show on KTSE 650 AM. He has a question on Windows 7. He heard owners of Vista Home Premium will get a free upgrade. He would like to know if this is true.
Well, Timothy, I have bad news. Windows 7 will not be transmitted automatically to Vista Home Premium users. But there is a small grain of truth to what you heard.
Many buyers of Vista machines since June 26 qualify for free upgrades. The computer manufacturer has to be participating in the program. Also, Vista Home Basic does not qualify.
If your computer qualifies, you should have received an offer form. Use it to order an upgrade DVD on Microsoft's site. Some computer manufacturers may charge for the upgrade. Or, they may charge for shipping and handling. Deadline is Feb. 28.
PHOTO FRAMES CAN RECEIVE PHOTOS AUTOMATICALLY
Christopher in Oak Harbor, WA, tunes in on KTTH 770 AM. He is in the military. And he is stationed far from his family. He would like to keep his parents updated with photos of his kids. He'd like to know more about digital photo frames.
There are many ways you can share your photos quickly and easily. And, you don't necessarily need to spend a dime to do it. The most obvious solution is to join a photo-sharing site. You can upload your photos. Then, your parents can log on and view them. They can also order prints.
Photo-sharing sites usually offer privacy tools. You can control who sees your photos. And they'll give you plenty of storage.
You may be required to make a yearly purchase. Make sure you understand the rules.
You will also find Internet-connected photo frames. These often pull photos from sharing sites. Just think—your parents could get a new photo every morning.
Internet-connected photo frames are pretty common. For example, there's the CEIVAshare. For about $130, you get an 8-inch frame that connects via Ethernet or phone line. Photos can be sent to the frame free for a year. After that, service is $7 monthly.
There's also the Kodak EASYSHARE W820 ($200). It is a Wi-Fi-enabled 8-inch frame. It connects to Flickr, Kodak Gallery and other sites. There is no subscription fee. Another frame to consider is the 8-inch ViewSonic VFP838-11. It connects to popular photo-sharing sites via Wi-Fi. There is no subscription fee.
DISINFECT YOUR KEYBOARD THE EASY WAY
Shana in Silverton, TX, listens to the show on KFYO 790 AM. She teaches first grade and has six computers in her classroom. She would like to know how she can disinfect the keyboards. But she doesn't want to unplug or turn off the computers between each group.
Shared keyboards are gross. I could quote some statistics, but I'd rather not think about it.
Disinfecting a keyboard is easy. You could swab it with alcohol between uses. You could also spray Lysol on a cloth and wipe it. However, if the internals get wet, the keyboard could be fried.
A better option might be a plastic keyboard cover or membrane. These are used to protect keyboards from spills. You could wipe these down with alcohol or Lysol without turning off the computer. You wouldn't even have to remove it from the keyboard. Just lock the keyboard with ToddlerTrap or Baby Smash!. Some covers are even antimicrobial. The covers start around $10.
That's a little pricey. So, how about Saran Wrap? Put a piece over the keyboard. Then, change it between students.
JUMP TO THE TOP OF SCROLLABLE IPHONE APPS
Katelyn in Savannah, GA, listens on WBMQ 630 AM. She loves her iPhone. But it's also driving her crazy. The touch screen controls work great. But she gets stuck at the bottom of her e-mail. And it takes forever to get back to the top.
Katelyn, I feel your pain. And there is a solution. But first, let me explain this problem.
Navigating the iPhone interface is pretty simple. It's mostly just tapping and moving your finger. Scrolling through lists, like your stored e-mail, just takes a swipe. And that's the problem.
What happens when you finish e-mail number 200? How many swipes will it take to get back to the top? Too many.
Apple really should have made the solution more obvious. Simply tap the status bar (where the clock is) at the top of the screen. You'll shoot back up to the top of the list. This also works in Safari, contacts lists and some third-party apps.
PAY IT FORWARD: I'm sure at least one person you know might benefit from these tidbits. So, spread the love. Forward this newsletter to all your friends. Encourage them to de-stress, too, and sign up for our newsletters!

FINDING THE RIGHT MEDIA PLAYER FOR YOUR INTERESTS
Portable media players aren't just for music. With them, you can watch videos, listen to podcasts and play games. No matter what your media interests, you'll find a player to suit you.
Media players are available at a variety of price points and storage capacities. Figure that 1 gigabyte will hold about 250 songs. Things aren't so clear-cut with video. Assume 1GB will hold an hour of standard-definition or 30 minutes of high-definition video.
Sansa Fuze
SanDisk's Sansa Fuze is ideal for children or anyone looking for their first player. Expandable storage also makes it attractive to music die-hards.
The Sansa Fuze is available in three capacities: 2GB ($70), 4GB ($80) and 8GB ($100). It comes in a variety of colors.

Eva wrote in from Richardson, TX, where she tunes in on KRLD 1080 AM. She says she knows how to use Favorites. But she would like some help using Bookmarks. She hasn't figured them out yet.
The words favorites and bookmarks are often used interchangeably, Eva. They do the same things, basically. But Favorites is a feature in Internet Explorer. Bookmarks is part of Firefox.
Both allow you to link to a Web site for future reference.
They also work much the same way. To bookmark a page in Firefox, use the Ctrl + D shortcut. You can also click Bookmarks>>Bookmark This Page.
In the box that opens, you can add a name for the Bookmark. Or, use the one that's supplied. You can also select a place to store the Bookmark. By default, Bookmarks are stored on the Bookmarks Menu. That's a good place for most Bookmarks. Click Done when finished.
You can also bookmark multiple tabs at once. Just use the Ctrl + Shift + D shortcut key. Or, click Bookmarks>>Bookmark All Tabs. Multiple tabs are stored in a folder. Enter a folder name and click Add Bookmarks.
To open a Bookmark, click the Bookmarks menu. Select a bookmark from the list and click it. The site will open in the current tab.
You will probably want to organize your Bookmarks at some point. That is relatively easy, too. Click Bookmarks>>Organize Bookmarks, or press Ctrl + Shift + B.
In the pane on the left, click Bookmarks Menu. You'll see your Bookmarks in the right side of the window. Right-click a Bookmark or folder and select Delete to delete it.
You can also create new folders for your Bookmarks. Right-click and select New Folder. Enter a name and click Add. The new folder will appear in your Bookmarks list.
You can move Bookmarks to folders by dragging and dropping.
I have plenty of great tools on my site to help you with Bookmarks. Don't miss them:

Let's keep it going; there's plenty more to cover:
• SECURE COMPUTING: Time to update Windows
MICROSOFT ISSUES CRITICAL SECURITY PATCHES
This past week, Microsoft issued its November security updates. Fifteen vulnerabilities were fixed with six security patches. Of these flaws, three are rated critical. The others are rated important. The vulnerabilities affect both Excel and Word, as well as Windows XP and Vista. None of the patches affect Windows 7.
Researchers are warning about one flaw in particular. It affects the Windows kernel, but can be activated via Internet Explorer or some Office documents. It could be used in drive-by attacks to install malware. Attacks exploiting the vulnerability are expected within the next 30 days. Upgrade your machines now!
THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT I WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK
• Free software to beef up Windows 7
I'm getting ready to upgrade my computer from Vista to Windows 7. I'm currently in the process of getting all my software together. But I'm sure that I will probably need more software once I upgrade. What programs do you recommend for Windows 7? Tom in Washington, listening on WTNT 570 AM
Setting up a new computer or upgrading an old one can be a lot of work. But there are things you can do to make the process go more smoothly. Gathering your software before starting is one.
Of course, it is also a good idea to think about software you don't have yet. That way, you can track it down before you set up your machine. After all, once the new machine is running, you're going to want to use it right away!
You probably have much of the software that you need. And, most of it should run under Windows 7. But you may need to update some programs. Security software is a good example. And other programs make a nice addition to any new or upgraded machine.

A DRAGON TERRORIZES CAMELOT
Camelot was under attack by a large, fearsome dragon. So, King Arthur called upon his most valiant knight to slay the dragon. Unfortunately, all of the horses were frightened of the dragon and cowered in terror. All other options exhausted, the knight found a one-eyed, arthritic Great Dane. But, King Arthur took one look at the dog and shook his head. "I'll kill the dragon myself," he said. "I wouldn't send a knight out on a dog like this."

GOOGLE DASHBOARD HELPS YOU MANAGE YOUR PRIVACY
Google is constantly adding new services. This past week was slow. Google only rolled out one new service. (I jest!) Google Dashboard is designed to help you control your privacy. You can see what services are associated with your Google account.
The Dashboard will also help you see what information Google has collected on you. You can manage your privacy options. Or, delete some of the information Google has stored. Dashboard isn't perfect. For example, you can't delete your Web searches. But, it is one more tool to help you rein in your private data!

BEEF UP YOUR MACHINE WITH HANDY FREE PROGRAMS
You'll find plenty of free programs on the Internet. But these programs may hide viruses, spyware or other malware. Not so with my Download of the Day site! Each day, I feature a great free program as a Download of the Day. And there are hundreds of programs in my archives. Each has been thoroughly checked for malware. I've taken the risks so you don't have to!
Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:
Saturday's Download of the Day—It's great to chat with friends and family using your Webcam. These cool programs make it even more fun.
Preview of Sunday's download—Everyone loves curling up with a good book. Now, it's easier. Just sit back and listen to your favorites.
Want direct access to over 300 free programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!
And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.
NEED A LAUGH OR SOME INSPIRATION? You know that there are good videos on YouTube. But who has the time to hunt them down? I do! Each and every day, I post a new video to my Video of the Day site. Many of the videos are funny. Others are inspirational or informative. But most will just make you say, "Wow!"
Here are my favorite videos from the past week:
• How will your loved ones remember you after you're gone? One six-year-old is touching lives long after her death.
• Imagine if your favorite restaurant moved three times per day. Believe it or not, that business model is pretty successful.
• Here's an oxymoron – honest commercial. But would an honest commercial really work? This one does.
• Music-based video games are fun to play. But plastic guitars are just the beginning. Why not play with your feet?
Good art comes in many forms. You won't find a lot of it in galleries. These artistic videos are really cool. They use interesting methods and mediums. See more in my Video of the Day archive:
• What would you do with a new car? An ad agency ripped one apart. And the pieces were crafted into classical instruments.
• Hobbyists and tinkerers toil away in basement workshops. Their creations can be surprisingly sophisticated. Here's one.
• Everyone knows the frustration of deadline pressure. This art student has turned his frustration into a great video.
• Sand animation is a neat way to tell a story, even when it's sad. This performance is nearly too good for a talent show.
Saturday's video—Most people can't play an instrument. But does that mean only a few of us understand music? Not at all. In fact, our brains are wired for music.
Preview of Sunday's video—It's easy to break a diet at the State Fair of Texas. You can find every kind of deep fried food imaginable. And there are some you won't believe.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: How to truly browse in private
It's fairly easy to track exactly where you've been online. The sites you visit are recorded in a number of ways. For some people, this is a big privacy concern. Browsing the Web privately isn't easy. But I'll help you do it in the second hour of my show.
Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.
STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!
• Getting a Facebook vanity URL
• The skinny on 64-bit Windows 7
• Selecting the perfect digital SLR
• Important security tips; and some awesome freebies!
CHECK YOUR SITE IN MULTIPLE BROWSERS THE EASY WAY
Michael wrote in from Newark, NJ, where he catches my Daily Radio Minutes on WCBS 880 AM. He is designing a Web site. And, he wants to see how it will look in different browsers. He's heard of a site that will help with this. But, he can't remember the site's name. So, he'd like some help finding the site.
Unfortunately, Web pages do not look the same in every browser. That's because the browsers render pages differently. Sometimes, the differences are barely noticeable. At other times, the differences are overwhelming.
So, anyone creating a Web page should be aware of this. You should check how your Web page will look in different browsers. That way, you can tweak your pages so that the differences are minimal.
I recommend that you have a couple of browsers installed on your machine. Obviously, you need the latest version of Internet Explorer. You should also install Firefox and Safari. You might also consider Google's Chrome. These are the main Web browsers. So, you'll want to check your site in all of them.
Of course, people still use old versions of Internet Explorer. I'm sure they also use older versions of other browsers. And, there are browsers that have very little market share. You'll need some help checking your site in these browsers.
CLAIM YOUR FACEBOOK VANITY URL
Beth wrote in from Bend, OR, where she tunes in on KBND 1110 AM. She has noticed that some of her contacts have vanity URLs on Facebook. She wants to know if she can sign up for one, too. She also wants to know if she has to pay for the privilege.
Yes, Beth, you can get your own Facebook vanity URL. And, it won't cost a thing. Your chosen name will appear in your profile's URL. For example, I have a vanity URL for my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/kimkomando. Vanity URLs are easy to remember. And, they look good on a business card!
Facebook rolled out vanity URLs back in June. And, there are hundreds of millions of Facebook users. That means you'll have a difficult time getting the Facebook URL you want. So, come up with several ideas and see which is available.
Your vanity URL can consist of alphanumeric characters. That's A-Z and 0-9. You can also add a period if you want. Vanity URLs cannot be changed once they're assigned. Choose carefully—and watch out for misspellings!
To create your vanity URL, you need to select a username. This username is used for your vanity URL. Login to Facebook. You should see a box that lists username suggestions. You can select one of the suggestions and confirm it. But, you might not like any of the suggestions. In that case, use the option to create your own username. Confirm your choice.
If you don't see username suggestions, visit Facebook.com/username. This should give you the option of selecting your username. The steps should be similar.
EASILY SOLVE COMPUTER PROBLEMS FROM AFAR
David wrote in from San Francisco, where he listens to the show on KNEW 910 AM. He's the techie in his family. So, he often gets asked for help with computer problems. He's tired of trying to explain things over the phone. He wants to know if he can use GoToAssist, one of my advertisers.
I hear you, David! Fixing computer problems is tricky. Your family members may not give you enough information to fix a problem. You may need to see what's going on in order to offer a solution. And, it is often easier to fix a computer problem than to explain how it's done.
Fortunately, GoToAssist makes it easy for you to fix computer problems remotely. Set up is fast and easy. And, your family members don't need to pre-install any software. You simply send them a link via e-mail. Or, you can provide a link and support key over the phone. The necessary software is downloaded automatically. You'll be up and going in minutes.
GoToAssist uses screen-sharing technology. You'll be able to see your family member's screen. You can then poke around and make the necessary changes to the machine. And, it works with both Windows and Mac machines.
GoToAssist lets you transfer files of any size between Windows machines. You can also set up unattended support for Windows machines. Logon and fix problems at your convenience. Your family members don't need to be at the machine to get your help! This is a permission-based feature; it can be disabled at any time.
WHIP YOUR FILES INTO ORDER
Melissa in Perrysburg, OH listens to the show on WSPD 1370 AM. She wrote in to ask for some help getting her computer cleaned up. She says that she has photos, videos and music all over the drive. She would like some help getting organized. And, she wants to do it the easy way. She doesn't want to look through every file on her hard drive. She's using Vista.
Shame on you, Melissa! A disorganized computer is not a good thing. You will have a harder time finding the files you need. You'll also have a harder time backing up the machine. You could lose all your precious photos and home videos if you're not careful.
Fortunately, getting this cleaned up shouldn't be terribly difficult. And you don't need any special software to do it. Windows already has folders set up for your pictures, videos and music. So, it is a matter of finding your files and moving them to the appropriate location. You can use the Windows search feature for this.
Obviously, you're not going to search for your files by name. Rather, you'll need to use a wildcard and a file extension. You'll want to search your entire computer for MP3 files. So, do an advanced search for "*.MP3" (minus quotes). This will return every MP3 file on your machine.
You'll need to repeat the search for different file types. With music, you'll also want to search for AAC files. With movies, search for MPEG/MPG, AVI and MOV files. Your photos are likely in JPEG/JPG format, although you may have TIFF files. If you know you have different file types, search for them, too.
Once you locate the files, select them. Right-click and drag them to the appropriate folder on your computer. You'll see a popup menu. Select Move Here. Now, be careful when moving files. Some media files may be part of Windows or a program. Don't move them. Also, be careful with your iTunes files. If you move an iTunes media file in Windows Explorer, iTunes can't locate it.
The search window will help you see where your files are currently located. This can help you decide whether to move a file. For example, you won't move files in the System folder. You can also open a file before moving it. If you didn't put a file on your machine, leave it be.
Once you move the files, there's a little more work to do. You'll want to organize the files into subfolders. This will make it easier to locate files in the future. You won't have to wade through all your media files to find them. And, to keep files updated in the future, use the Magic Folder. This handy Windows gadget is free. You'll love it!
Do you need a little extra help getting organized? I'll help you get your digital life in order:
DEALING WITH MALFUNCTIONING APPLICATIONS
Neil from Oakland, CA, listens on KNEW 910 AM. He just switched from a PC to a new iMac. He was hoping for better performance. But he's had a problem with crashing programs. When something locks up he's not sure how to shut it down.
Unfortunately, Neil, applications sometimes malfunction on any computer. It's just something we all have to live with. It's not that bad if you know how to handle the problem.
On a PC, you'd access the Task Manager. From there you could force a program to close. Everyone knows the infamous three-fingered salute (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). Macs have their own version of the gesture. Just press Opt+Cmd+Esc. This opens the Force Quit menu. Select the stuck application and click Force Quit.
You can also right-click a frozen application's dock icon. On the bottom of the pop-up menu should be Force Quit. Click it to shutdown the application.
Every application also has special permissions. These give applications access to important folders and files. Permissions errors can cause many application crashes and slow downs.
To fix this, click Go>>Utilities. Select Disk Utility. Select your hard drive from the list. Then click the First Aid tab. Finally, click Repair Disk Permissions. This will check for and repair errors. Be ready to wait. This may take a while.

STILL TO COME IN THIS ISSUE:
• Some freebies and a contest for you to win!
• What to look for in a digital SLR
• And so much more you can use!
Clarence wrote in from Los Angeles, where he catches my shows on podcast via Kim's Club. He ordered an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.
He heard that the disc contains both 32- and 64-bit versions of the software. He wants to know if this is true. He also wants to know if he can run 64-bit Windows 7 on a 32-bit processor.
Retail copies of Windows 7 include both 32- and 64- bit versions. That's true for both upgrade and full versions. This allows you to choose the version that suits your machine. You don't have to worry about buying the wrong version.
You can also purchase OEM copies of Windows 7. OEM copies are aimed at manufacturers or those who build their own systems.
OEM copies only include one version of Windows 7. You must select either 32- or 64-bit when purchasing the disc. Upgrade discs issued by manufacturers likely only contain one version of Windows 7, too.
Now, let's talk about selecting which version to install on your machine. If your processor is 32-bit, you must go with 32-bit Windows. You won't be able to install 64-bit Windows.
Things are different with 64-bit processors. You can install either version on a 64-bit machine.
Now, there are downsides to 64-bit Windows. You could run into problems with older software and gadgets.
If you're considering 64-bit Windows, do some research. Make sure you can find drivers for your gadgets. And see that your software is compatible. You'll need to visit manufacturers' sites for this.
Also, the upgrade path from 32- to 64-bit Windows (or vice versa) is more complicated. You'll need to do a clean installation. That means you'll need to reinstall all your software. You'll also need to restore all of your data.

Let's keep it going; there's plenty more to cover:
• SECURE COMPUTING: Conficker continues to grow
CONFICKER INFECTIONS SURPASS 7 MILLION
Despite widespread media coverage earlier this year, Conficker continues to grow. Researchers say that the worm has infected more than seven million computers worldwide. It is believed that many of the infected machines are running counterfeit copies of Windows. These machines are unable to download Microsoft's tools to remove the infection.
The criminals who control Conficker could do serious damage. They could launch massive denial-of-service attacks, for example. But, the infected machines haven't been used to do much. The reason for this is unknown. However, the criminals probably don't want to call attention to themselves.
THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT I WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK
• Buying a digital SLR
I'm in the market for a new camera. I'm considering an SLR, but I'm not a professional photographer by any means. Can you help me pick out an SLR? Or should I stick with a point-and-shoot? Troy in Reno, NV, listening on KKOH 780 AM
Digital SLRs used to be the domain of professional photographers. The rest of us stuck with inexpensive, easy-to-use point-and-shoots.
But, things have changed. Digital SLR prices have fallen from their stratospheric heights. That has more casual photographers interested in SLRs.
And, there are plenty of good reasons to consider a digital SLR. Large sensors mean better pictures. Interchangeable lenses and extensive settings put you in control of your photos.
SLRs are also faster than point-and-shoots. Shutter lag isn't a problem. Shot-to-shot times are low, as is start up time. This makes the cameras ideal for photographing sports or the grandkids.
Getting up and going with a digital SLR isn't terribly difficult. But, selecting an SLR can be a confusing process. There are lots of different models. And, there are plenty of specifications you need to understand.

A BAKER GETS LUCKY
Two bakers lived in a small town. They were highly competitive, but both had many customers. This changed when one baker bought a new bread slicing machine that cut four loaves at once. He could serve people faster, so he soon got all the business in the town. The other baker was forced to close. The second baker went to the first and asked, "How were you able to get all the business in town? It seems that you got lucky all of a sudden." The first baker replied, "I'm not sure. I think it has something to do with the four-loaf cleaver I found."
