Enough already. How about a little common decency and respect for another's

Gentlemen...

I am glad that OCLBtalk is finally getting some use. However, I must remind
all of you that the purpose is of this listserve is not to extend a
political slant in either direction. This listserve is meant to be a
discussion forum regarding happenings of the CalCPA. I have allowed Mr.
Simon to raise his viewpoint since the CalCPA BOD did endorse his candidacy.
However, political flames are not necessary here...

Dear David -
Thanks for putting this issue on this listserve. However, after
reviewing the web site of both John Campbell and Merritt MacKeon, I can
only come to one conclusion. Which is: John Campbell is the only 70th
Assembly District's candidate that deserves our vote and endorsement.
John Campbell wants to cut taxes, liberate public education and decrease
the size of government.
My only regret is that I can only vote once for John Campbell.

John Campbell's web site:

http://www.johncampbell.org/

David, did you support Jerry Brown for mayor of Oakland?

For anyone interested, I located the Web site of Merritt
McKeon, the candiate opposing John Campbell, the 70th District
Assembly candiate endorsed by the California Society of CPAs.
You can visit the opponent's Web site at:

http://www.merrittmckeon.com/merritt_s_mission.htm

For anyone desiring a quick preview, I cut and pasted the
following exerpt from Candidate McKeon's Web site:

John Campbell, Merritt's opponent, is a conservative
Republican who will vote to have our tax dollars support
religious schools. He is in support of the divisive,
homophobic "Knight Initiative", which will only cause people
who hate gays to "get out the vote".

According to the Web site, Candiate McKeon claims to be:

Pro: Environment, Education, Health Care Reform (access,
quality, availability to everyone), HMO reform, stronger gun
control, and public transportation.

Against: School vouchers, laws which target special groups for
discrimination, and special breaks for developers who do not
respect environmental protective laws.

David- I think the most important issues that will come before the
legislature in the upcoming year will be the sunset review of the State
Board of Accountancy and the Uniform Accountancy Act. In Orange County the
Republicans rule the in most districts so we don't hurt anyone's feelings by
backing a republican candidate. I think the most important aspect in
backing Mr. Campbell is the fact that he is a CPA (one of us) and that he is
a great guy to boot. I'm an independent voter, I vote for the best person
running even if they are affiliated with a party I don't generally like. I
would vote for Mr. Campbell because he is a common sense look at the issues
person and he doesn't feel it is necessary to vote the party line (his
words). We may have occasion to back a Democrat, Libertarian, or Reform
party candidate for office in the future. Mr. Campbell's party affiliation
had nothing to do with our endorsement of him. More CPA's should run for
office and perhaps bring sound financial/spending reforms into public
policy. Cheryl Collins, OC

Hi Tony, What issues are those that the CPA Society is so
concerned with to be endorsing this particular Republican
candidate from around your district?

I see where the California Society of CPAs is opposing the
Managed Care Act. This bill would ensure a patient's right to
sue in court for wrongfully delayed or denied health benefit
claims. I do a lot of business with attorneys, and
personally, I'm just getting a little tired of all the lawyer
bashing. Now the Big-5 have their own way of dealing with
employee health benefits and workers in general, where they
"chew 'em up and spit 'em out." But I think I could exploit
my employees a lot better if they ain't been butchered by an
HMO.

I also understand CalCPA-PAC made a contribution to the
Republican candidate. Since John Campbell is running
"virtually unopposed" (in your words), that means the
Republicans can use those excess PAC contributions to support
the rest of the right-wing, conservative, Republican agenda.
No need to do into that, and it suites some of my clients just
fine. But up north here, where intellectuals live, some of my
other clients are getting just a little tired of all the
know-nothing Clinton bashers.

I also see where the CPA Society is opposing the Clinton
administration's position on repeal of I.R.C. §1014(b)(1).
The story in August's Monthly Statement gives the CPA
Society's viewpoint, without a hint of the opposing
viewpoint. Looks to me like the Monthly Statement has become
the Society's party organ. And I rather suspect this ain't
gonna be the last time the Society is backing Republican
candidates.

So when you say we should support that particular Republican
"if we are going to endorse anyone," seems to me that's a
mighty big IF.

David,

Yes, the CalCPA endorsed John Campbell for the 70th Assembly seat. This was
not a decision made locally. It was a decision made by the State BOD.

Personally, if we were going to endorse anyone... it should be John
Campblell. He is a CPA, a member of the CalCPA since he was certified (i.e.
he didn't join the CalCPA just for the endorsement), and he has been very
active in public service.

By our endorsement and his expected victory (he is running virtually
unapposed), we finally get a CPA in the State Legislature who understands
what we do and the issues we are concerned with.

P.S. To everyone -- I understand how political viewpoints may vary and may

Hey y'all way down south. What's all this ruckus I'm hearing
up here in Oakland/Berkeley 'bout the CPA Society endorsing
the Republican candidate in Orange County for the 70th
Assembly District? Is that where y'all be?

Before I get to put'n my foot too far in my mouth, let me just
say that I reckon if anyone ain't suppos'd to be taking sides
politically, it's dentists and CPAs.

How'd you like it if your dentist waw drawing that long,
drippy syringe, 'n blowing out the bubbles when you learned
that the California Dental Assoc. says to give Novocain to
Democrats. Now, it just don't sit right with me for the
California Society of CPAs to be endorsing candidates neither
on the right nor on the left. Either way, half your clients
go away mad.

So pardon me for intruding on y'all's list-serve. I just
thought I might wander on by to find out what the story is
from where it's all happening. Ain't never been down to

I just set up a link to a great site for financial info on public companies
(http://edgarscan.pwcglobal.com/). Try it out. Apparently PWC has linked

I just set up a link to a great site for financial info on public companies
(http://edgarscan.pwcglobal.com/). Try it out. Apparently PWC has linked into
the SEC filings found in Edgar and converted financial info to excel
spreadsheets. Try the benchmarking assistant for numerous graphic presentation
of financial info.

Thanks to PWC.

Just wanted to let everyone know that at www.onelist.com they have given
their site a new look. It is even easier to manipulate your subscriptions to
various listserves than ever before. Also, I have submitted a story to them
regarding the CALCPA listserves that hopefully will get posted.

If you haven't yet visited their site, it's worth taking a look at.

You're welcome to stay as long as you like. As you said on CPAtalk, I'm not
expecting a lot of traffic on this list but you never know. We provide the
vehicle... let's see how many get on board.
