My best advice for you would be to try and get a job with an investigative
agency, or in an attorney's office where they have their own investigators.
There are also some great seminars for training, which you can take if they are
close to you. As with many professions, "on the job" training from experienced
investigators is the best way to learn. I had 2 or 3 "mentors" besides the
investigators/process servers that I worked for, that really took an interest
in me and helped in so many ways. Priceless.
Best wishes, I hope you do well.

Hi:
I'm Annie Young and I live in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I am interested in
pursuing work in investigations. I joined this list so I could learn how to go
about
it, get tips, meet people.
I worked as a volunteer on AOL in their Personal Finance channel and on the
Motley Fool website. In both cases I was involved in investigating some online
shenanigans that were going on by people. My educationi is that of a public
school teacher where I taught in the inner city and usually was involved in
uncovering things there. I enjoy digging out information and finding ways to
get information that may not always be an "upfront phone call". This is an area
I've always been interested in. And I've been told I would be good at it.
I'm wondering about professional training. I haven't approached anyone about
direct employment because I think I need some training first. Should I
pursue some studies in paralegal? Or would I be better served to take some
Criminal Justice Classes? What about online courses?
I may not post a whole lot as I want to read and learn. Newbie questions can
be very frustrating for seasoned professionals.
But I do hope to get some guidance here.
Annie
[Editor's Note]
We were all newbie's at one time, so feel free to ask anything.
After posting a comment on, and soliciting other comments on the
current poll regarding PI badges, I realized that I had not yet
introduced myself to this august group.
I am Mike Hawkins and am in the process of opening my own P.I. firm
in Edmonds, WA just north of Seattle. I am a member of the South
Carolina Bar and practiced there for several years. At the same time
I was the co-owner of a private security and investigations firm that
operated in SC and GA where I was licensed as a PI and a Trainer in
both states. I became an Agent for the Naval Investigative Service
in 1985 and later went to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
where I was a Supervisory Criminal Investigator and ran two of the
training divisions, Legal and Behavioral Sciences. After leaving the
government I worked for a government contractor detecting and
investigating Medicare fraud in thirteen states.
My wife, Janell is a former Agent with the Veterans Department Office
of Inspector General, and was a licensed PI in Georgia before we
moved to WA (her home state).
Our firm, The Hawkins Group, is a full service one designed to
provide the highest possible level of professional investiative
services to corportions, attorneys and individuals. We would welcome
any business that group members could refer to us as we are just
getting started and would prefer to stay busy. If anyone needs any
investigative assistance in western WA, please give us a call.

I have been a pi for about 6 years now. I have a badge in a case with all my
id. I have never used that badge to gain entry or get information. I usually
do show credentials when asked for them. I have never had anyone refuse to
talk to me but one person and that person was a governmental type, who was
later subpoened.
The badge does not a man/investigator make, it doesnt open doors. You do
that all by yourself with your demeanor, professionalism and approach to the
subject you are dealing with.
I have gotten folks to talk simply by telling them I am a PI and I am
investigating xxxx and your name came up in the investigation. I try to be
non threatening and open with them. If I can legaly tell them or answer
their question I will try to if it doesnt hamper what we are trying to
accomplish.
Badges are just like a good pen or a good not book. They are a tool when
used properly they get a job done, when used improperly they cause a fog for
all of us in the profession.

Mike,
You and some other group members brought up some interesting points about P.
I.'s and the use of badges. I have a P. I. badge and a Authorized Process
Servers badge. The majority of the work I do is service of process. I clip a
badge on my belt when serving papers at a persons place of employment. And if I
have to serve a person early in the morning or late at night, then I have a
badge holder I can wear around my neck. I also keep my P. I. badge in the car
with me while on surveillance. Hope you and all the group members have a safe
and Happy New Year!
Best wishes,
Joe

While I think that the question of whether or not a P.I. should carry
a badge is an interesting question for the group, I feel that it may
also act as a springboard for discussion within this group's
membership.
While my state (Washington) does not prohibit the carrying of a
badge, I am aware that other jurisdictions (such as Oregon) do have a
prohibition against P.I.'s carrying badges. I am making the
assumption that those that prohibit it, do so fearing that P.I.'s
would falsely identify themselves as law enforcement officers. This
fear is most likely grounded in the history of the profession before
licensing, etc. when there were a lot of unsavory and unethical
people acting as private investigators.
I have been in and out of the profession in several states over the
years and am just now getting started in Washington State after years
as a Federal Agent with the Naval Investigative Service and the U.S.
Treasury. As a result, I believe that I have some understanding and
appreciation for the differing viewpoints on this issue.
One of the major factors in favor of carrying a badge, in my opinion,
is when a P.I. is armed. Having a badge available can eliminate many
problems. It can prevent a concerned citizen who may have accidently
seen the weapon (coat blown back in the wind, etc.) from calling the
police and it can help diffuse a situation when confronted by law
enforcement. A badge is also a visible and readily recognized means
of indicating our "official" status as state licensees. Often the
state issued identification cards leave a great deal to be desired in
their appearance and in the information provided on them. A badge
can go a long way in supplementing that form of identification.
On the "No" side, it can result in intentional or unintentional
misreprentation of the P.I.'s status and authority. This can,
however, be greatly diminished by the steps that we take to clearly
make sure that those we talk with/interview understand that we are
Private Investigators and not law enforcement. I have found that in
many cases, making this clear results in much more information than I
would have obtained were I acting in my former law enforcement
capacity.
Carrying a badge, either as a law enforcement officer, or as a P.I.
also carries the burden of acting professionally, legally and within
the high standards of ethical conduct that we hope the entire body of
P.I.s will follow in our profession.
I would be interested in reading other member's thoughts and views on
this subject as the mere results of the Poll do not give any insight
into the reasoning behind the vote. I encourage everyone to join in
and express their thoughts and reasons and even, perhaps, change my
mind.

As everyone knows, we are updating the PI Coffee Shop site. Today, we
finished building the heart of a new "Links Page" for the site.
This one is going to be different in several ways. First of all, it's
a "search engine" and not just a list of links. We designed it like a
search engine and will allow anyone to "add a link" to the search
engine. By doing this, it should grow faster and everyone gets a
chance to suggest a link.
It's a lot like the DMOZ "Open Directory Project" in which the public
was invited to edit the links submitted to the search engine. ( See
www.dmoz.org )
Our goal is to build a giant resource library of links that Private
Investigators can use. We will continue to design the page and add
all the instructions and such...
But I thought I'd let everyone take a peek at it and see what we are
doing. Any commenst are welcome since we are still in the design
stage.
The site is working, so if you know of a good resource, please feel
free to add it. You'll see a link that says "Add URL" on the page.
The page is NOT yet linked inside the Coffee Shop yet, but you can
visit the page by going here: http://www.PICoffeeShop.com/links
Please let me know what you think about this project...
Thanks all!
Wayne
Some states don't allow PI's or process servers to wear badges. However in
Nevada, we can submit a badge design to the Sheriff's dept, and then to the PI
Board for approval before ordering badges. It cannot resemble the sheriff's
badge, and not have the state seal on it, I believe. The one my "old" boss
used had his license number on it as well.
In Las Vegas, when I did have a badge (while working for a different company)
they do come in handy especially for leasing office employees of apartment
complexes. I used to wear the type you just clipped onto your waistband, and it
would show beneath a vest or jacket, when you moved. Just enough. All the
ID in the world sometimes, for some reason, doesn't affect some folks as much
as a little bit of shiney tin!
Best regards to everyone for a Happy New Year, I hope it's a safe and
peaceful one for us all.

So far, the poll is all tied up! If you haven't voted yet, you can do
so by logging in and selecting the "POLLs" link on the left side of
the group page.
Here's a thought about badges.
If you show it to someone and tell them you are a "PI" and not
a "cop", most likely they will not "hear you" - and they will think
what they want to think, and they will think "cop".
I had that happen to me once. Someone questioned me while on a
surveillance and I told them I was a PI and showed them a badge. They
went and told everyone ( his redneck family ) that I was a "cop".
I think if you show it to someone, they will think "cop". Now that
doesn't maen you shouldn't carry one. I still do. BUT, it does mean
that there is a time and place to use it.
Another example... Lets say it's raining out and you drive up toa
gated community... You flash it to the gate guard and he lets you in
because he doesn't want to get up and talk to you cause he might get
wet.
I once flashed it as I was asking the guard for the gate combination
and he gave it to me without thinking.
I know that he "thought" I was a cop, but hey - I "thought" they
had "real security" there too! I guess we both were wrong!
Enjoy!
L
Mike,
Some times it doesn't matter what you say or do, there are people out there that
will tunnel vision into thinking your an officer even though you specifically
stated your are a PI and not a cop.
Some people even pride themselves in their ignorance.
You did make a good point about badges also. I have seen some rookies out there
that scare the heck out of me. And I was not even on the receiving end.

One of the best suggestions I can make is to get involved with your
local state organization. By doing so, you will meet lots of local
people who are "active" in the profession. They will be able to
provide you with loads of really good practical information.
In our state, Florida, the organization is FALI. ( Their website is
www.fali.com ) FALI is one of the most active organizations in the
country and I have met lots of wonderful people there.
Keep us posted on how things go...
